About the Artist
Aeternus is the musical implementation of Dark Metal. Dark Metal defined in the vein of Aeternus is music looked upon as Dark in an atmospheric and emotional way. Brutal, fast and extreme music mixed with mid-paced, slow and beautiful, melodic music.

Looked upon as one of the heaviest and most brutal bands coming from Scandinavia, they are known for their live performances where visual aggression is shown in a high degree, a strong and important element that Aeternus has mastered. Their brutal sound and war-like drumming makes their live shows a thundering experience. We must not forget the darkened voice of Ares, from the deepest depths his growling vocals pushes the sound picture even further into darkness and war-like atmospheres. Onward they will push and destroy limits with lust and aggression and with elder pride they will always stand as creators of true Dark Metal.

Aeternus exists for the glory of Dark Metal and for the lust of playing and performing extreme music. This, they share with people who know Metal as a life-style, dedicated souls of aggression, pride & strength. Ares formed this band, as he desired to take part in the world of extreme music with his own ideas and thoughts.

Their sound is not inspired by any bands! Totally unique, it shreds like razors and pounds like a Demon's heart. Easily they have been labelled as Death Metal several times, but Dark Metal is what this band deals with, regardless the usage of Death - Thrash elements in some different songs.

Product Description
Burning The Shroud is a collection of Aeternus songs compiled from various sources. The title track is new and will be on the full length album with a different mix. Songs 2-3 are previously unreleased and exclusive to this CD. The four live tracks were recorded and mixed by Pytten (Immortal, Emperor, Enslaved) and still prove AETERNUS' strength as a live band. The final 3 tracks were only available either as a 7-inch or bonus track on a limmited edition "And So..." tour CD.

3 out of 5 stars "Burning the Shroud".......2004-02-11

"Burning the Shroud" is the definition of a stop gap release. One new song, which is slated to appear on the next eagerly awaited album (although in a different mix), a couple unreleased songs as well as a few more rescued from obscure 7"s and foreign releases, and of course the obligatory live set. To be fair, the live tracks sound pretty good for a death metal release and the band are fairly proficient at this kind of brooding, long distance style of extreme music (average song length: six minutes). That being said, there is a definite, though acceptable, drop off in sound quality towards the end of the disc. As the band have four other releases under their belt, this doesn't seem to be something the neophyte would want to start with, and though talented, Aeternus aren't quite in that elite crowd whose every recorded note is a much purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Aeternus is the BEST.......2001-03-30

I'll review this song by song. Burning the Shroud opens with the ultra brutal title track; it's like the material found on Shadows of Old but much better. Vrolok's drumming has improved greatly, he slaughters just about every other drummer in the ENTIRE metal scene. Then it's onto Midnat Storm, which opens with an awesome piano solo, beethoven WISHES he could play as good as the beautiful Morrigan. Midnat Storm was originally recorded for Shadows of Old but didn't make it onto the album for some reason, which i find odd, as it CRUSHES any of the other material on that album. Then we have the very good Raven and Blood which was also discarded from Shadows. The main riff used throughout that track is killer. Next we have 4 live tracks, the first didn't do anything for me as I didn't like the original version, and I was dissapointed that the only song they used from ...And so the Night Became was When the Crows Shadow Falls; as it was my least favorite track from that CD. But then we're treated to 2 brutal live tracks from Shadows. Overall, Aeternus sounds spectacular live, and I really hope they come to the states some day. Track 8, a re-recording of Dark Rage has a really muddy production, and it suffers from that, but that's such a great song it doesn't really matter in the end. Fire and Wind has great acoustic riffs thrown in here and there and is as relaxing as an aeternus tune is going to get. Finally, the CD closes with IN THE DARKEST CIRCLES OF TIME. Tied with Midnat Storm as the best song on BTS, Darkest Circles is ultra dark and the heavy drumming patterns remind me of the Columbian Internal Suffering. Great job on the booklet too....it has photos of the whole band performing live; and it's good that they've left behind the costumes and corpse paint. Aeternus is one of the best bands in the world, and my personal favorite. See how good they are for yourself. Purchase this CD.
