One of death metal's underrated albums.......2006-09-27

This is definitely Morbid Angel's most underrated album, with their debut being rightfully praised (I for one worship it) and then there's Covenant which I think is a tad overrated. Oh and of course there's Domination which I thought kicked arse.

On this album you can immediately since a change in musical direction for the band, especially on the first half. Unfortunately this album has probably one the WORST intros I've ever heard, like most old Bathory album intros they're pretty f*ckin' pointless not like the bad*ss ones on In the Nightside Eclipse, Morbid Tales, and of course HELL AWAITS. All's well though since the album kicks off pretty strong with a heavy sludge/doom number with Fall From Grace and I don't know about you guys but I always like I got a massive wedgie from Satan himself after that one. You see this is what I was talking about, they slowed down their blasphemic speed and musically they became a lot tigher, ESPECIALLY Trey. This is also the first album they added those "atmospheric" acoustic/keyboard interludes which are kind of cool but I feel the last one is a little out of place. However, I love when metal gets all acoustic because I never hesitate to show the nay-sayers those songs to help prove that metal DOES require talent. Trey knows how to f*cking play a guitar and soothing keyboard too! Pete's drumming is still amazing of course and Dave intensifies his vocals a bit which he seems to do on each subsequent album until he left the band and they're awesome as usual.

The second half of the album (I'd say after the title track) is basically what I call "Altars of Madness part 2" with the first being the sludge/doom half. Since most of those tunes were actually revamped ones from their Abominations of Desolation demo days that would make sense since they retain that thrashiness and speed that makes "Altars" so god-like. They wouldn't be too odd to be on that album. 'Abominations' friggin rules as does 'The Ancient Ones'.

Overall a great one to pick up along with MA's first 4 albums. Gradewise I'd give this about a 92% so good job guys!

Blessed, Morbid Angel is (speaking as Yoda)........2006-09-14

Morbid Angel's technical skill, talent, and their evolution is why they're my favorite death metal band, and this album prooves it.

Their debut "Altars of Madness" was an extreme speed fest, "Blessed are the Sick" slows down on a few songs and incorporates doomy, creepy sounds and instrumental segways. Dave's vocals are more comprehensive and deeper than in Altars', which is fine by me. Trey and Richard still shred like mofos on Blessed', and Richard has his shining moment in the acoustic instrumental "Desolate Ways." "Doomsday Celebration" is another instrumental in which Trey plays keyboard, and I have to say, its very chilling. Pete still drums like crazy on this album, so don't worry about him doing slow stuff. Don't worry, speedaholics, there's still speedy songs on here. Songs like "Brainstorm," "Unholy Blasphemies," "Rebel Lands," and "Thy Kingdom Come" will quench any speed fan's thirst.

No skipping needed here, but my favorites on this album are "Fall From Grace," "Brainstorm," "Rebel Lands," "Thy Kingdom Come," "Unholy Blasphemies," and "The Ancient Ones."

Not for the emo or nu-metal kids, once they hear this, they'll soil themselves and start crying uncontrollably.

Best album of 1991, along with Sepultura's "Arise," Death's "Human," and Suffocation's "Effigy of the Forgotten." If you call yourself a death metal fan and don't have this, put this in your shopping cart pronto!!

Pure Death Metal.......2005-09-17

This cd is one of many that Morbid Angel has created to be masterpieces. I find all Morbid Angel albums incredible although Domination is my favorite and then Covenant I have to say this is a pretty damn good follow up to Altars of Madness. If anyone wants to criticize a death metal band make sure you truely have a good reason or otherwise just go kill some emo kids.

The pinnacle of death metal -- PERIOD........2003-12-09

I had to write this review in hopes of offset the morons who have seen fit to down "Blessed Are The Sick"... really, if you can't appreciate this album, you simply do NOT understand death metal -- end of story. This is Morbid Angel's greatest album, and it has many dimensions to it. It is pure evil set to music... everything you want it to be! The guitar work is GENIUS!!! The drumming is magnificent... lyrics, vocal delivery... what more could you want? This is, EASILY, among the greatest death metal albums EVER... I'll see you burning in the Sea of the Absu...

A great Album for Death Metal Fans.......2003-07-06

This album is perhaps the definitive death metal band. This album is not boring at all. There are a few "classical" pieces written in there. The song desolate ways is awesome and could be put on a new age compilation cd. The album begins with Fall From Grace...a song that has some of the best death metal lyrics of all time. Dave Vincent has a great gutteral but understandable voice when he sings (screams/growls). There are some awesome guitar riffs in this album.....listen to the mid point in brainstorm. On the whole this is a death metal master pice, however, the lyrics are quite hateful towards christians but being a death metal fan perhaps this doesnt bother you. There are a couple songs on the record I dont like because of the talk about putting infant entrails on upside down crosses. Not my cup of tea but whatever floats your boat.

This is probably my personal favs. of all the Morbid albums, with their 1st "Altars of Madness" falling not too far behind. Like others have said, this along with "Altars" belongs in EVERY death metal fans collection. Get on the ball & get this if you havent yet! Yeeeaaahhh!!!

Brutal, throat piercing classic.......2005-01-09

My introduction to Morbid Angel was the album Heretic, which seemed to me, a jumbled and incoherrent mess of satanic death metal. So I forget about Morbid Angel for a while until I decided to give them another try with a different album which turned out to be this one. I was sold by the end of the first riff. This is so much better than their latter catalog. The lyrics aren't toned down, the riffs are devasting monsters of power and Dave Vincent is at least 100 times better than whoever sings on Heretic. If your into Death Metal, you probably already own this classic and if you don't you will not regret adding it to your collection. Fall From Grace would be worth buying this alone. Even if your not into DM you would probably enjoy the technacality exhibited by the band.

Morbid Angel have some awesome riffs on this release. I love the sickening sludge riffs of the title track and Fall from Grace, the absolute atom bomb that is Brainstorm, the weird melodic lead at the end of track 4, Doomsday Celebration has a real eerie tone to it while Day of Reckoning is another atom bomb with some killer riffs. However, some things are overdone and get a bit boring imo. It's all pretty much killer until Unholy Blasphemies. Starts getting a little overdone with the atom bombs. Abominations is just weird with its guitar solos being too bluesy, and the death riffs I think are not too abundant or dynamic too call that song a winner. The whole lightning fast bluesy lead stuff doesn't work on some of the tracks and starts sounding repetitive. The leads are really good and just absolutely maniacal and effective in some parts, while in others sound uninspired. More thoughtful work there could have made the record better. The acoustic and the piano piece are not too breathtaking I've heard better use of at least an acoustic on a metal album. They're ok I guess. The Ancient Ones is kinda boring with the solos and kinda drags on. Overall, I love some parts (also, forgot that flute ending to the title track- awesome)...the band notes are kinda really weird too. These guys are weirdos...but some tracks are interesting. Definetly worth a try. Less straightforward and kinda deep in some parts.

This boxed set is by far one of the best purchases I have ever made. As a Purcell freak, this hits every button I have. The cast of characters include the inequitable Robert King, New College Choir, Bowman, and a host of other venerable persons. Likewise the attention to period performance of these works makes it an essential addition to the library of any serious anglophile/Musicologist etc. Now if only the Britten Realizations of all Purcell's songs could be recorded alongside the originals! You will Love this set!

The blueprint for death metal..........2003-02-15

...There's just no other way to describe it. I bought this cd back in '91 and nothing else has been able to touch it since. This band has spawned countless imitators, and this is by far their most inspired material. This cd covers a lot of ground, from blast beats to classical sounding piano and flute passages, while at all times maintaining its identity as a death metal album. Good flow throughout the disc, the songs explode with aggression exactly when they should and then ease off and breathe when they're supposed to breathe. Rhythms can get extremely complex at times, showcasing the band's insane creativity and technical proficiency, or can be staightforward and in your face. The disc can be best appreciated when you listen to it from beginning to end without interruption, because the band does such a good job of taking the listener on a roller-coaster ride of a listening experience that you never get bored. It's just perfect in every aspect.
