Disney has been a relatively late comer on Broadway, but it's been hitting pay dirt since the stage version of Beauty and the Beast opened to critical acclaim and commercial success in 1994, followed by The Lion King and Aida. While Aida was the only original stage creation, the other two featured new songs that were not in the movies. In addition, Disney worked with some of New York's finest theatrical talent. In hindsight, hiring Julie Taymor to stage The Lion King was a stroke of genius, but it really was a daring gamble at the Time. Likewise, Beauty and the Beast gave talented theater singers like Terrence Mann and Susan Egan a chance to shine in meaty roles. Disney groomed talent as well: Heather Headley was cast in a supporting part in The Lion King before moving on to the title role in Aida. All three shows are represented on this CD (with a companion book due in October 2002), making for a perfect introduction to their best-known songs. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Dude, what is up with all the animosity from Michael Gibson in his review? WTF have you done that's so great? Were you the original vocalist for one of the best bands of all time? Can you outsing Paul Dianno? If you can, I can still outsing you but,I try not do bash people since I know I haven't done crap with my abilities yet. Lighten up dude. Paul is doing his thing and God bless him. ...and why in God's name did you include Robert Plant with Dio, Halford, Dickinson and Tate? Talk about zero range. (yeah, I know I said I don't like to dis people but, he has like a 3 note range now.)

Maiden as it could have been.......2004-02-16

Paul Di'Anno is a great r'n'r/hm vocalist,with a voice both wide in range (pitch?), and yet aggresive at the same time.For all the fans of the OLD Iron Maiden (namely the first two albums),this CD makes you think how would Maiden have sounded if Di'Anno didn't leave the band.It would have had a much cheekyer,spit-in-your-face,raw punk-rock style.Instead they (I.M.) had two decades of playing cover songs for b/w films and flamboyant yet circus-like stage performances.Di'Anno's version of Wrathchild beats all the "Troopers","Aces High's","# o/t beast's","Fear of the dark's" of the Dickinson-era Maiden (not to mention B.Bayley) because it's loud,hard,and it simply rocks!

UP THE IRONS, BUT DOWN WITH Di'Anno!.......2004-01-25

I REMEMBER WATCHING IRON MAIDEN'S FIRST TOUR OF AMERICA AND THINKING, "THIS GROUP IS GOOD, BUT THE SINGER SUCKS." Less than a year later, DiAnno was gone and Dickinson was in. Di'Anno didn't and still doesn't have any vocal range. He sounds like someone who's trying to use the bathroom, but is constipated. These versions of Iron Maiden songs are far inferior to the ones re-done by Bruce Dickinson. If you like the way Rob Halford sings and Bruce Dickinson and Ronnie James Dio, Robert Plant, Geoff Tate, then you'll hate this CD. If you want truly great metal, look elsewhere. This is similar to bad garage band stuff sung by a drunk 9th grader.

Paul, who?!?! JUST KIDDING!!.......2003-02-19

THe Beast is back!! Although he might punch you in the face and tell you he never left. This is a great collection of the best Di'Anno era Maiden tunes. Recorded at various locations it is a live album that reminds you who came first. Some times Paul adapts a low growl, and sometimes almost hits those high notes of old. This however does not affect the vibe of the songs. They kick arse and so does Paul.

This is the live cd that Maiden should have released when Paul was still with them. Combine this with "Maiden Japan" and you have a great live document of Paul and Maiden. There are two other live cds by Paul contaning a few Maiden tunes, and solo songs as well, but this is where the buck stops. Killers and Battlezone were great, but Maiden is the best.

The best Iron maiden vocalist strikes back with an awesome live album. Paul Di'Anno shows his tremendous vocal skills on his own original material plus some classic Iron Maiden songs. A 5 star performance from one of the best metal vocalists ever.

In 1986, no doubt Ronald Shannon Jackson had a challenge on his hand-- the Decoding Society had pretty much scattered, and with the loss of such powerful musicians, assembling a new band to succeed them was a difficult task. The second generation Decoding Society, guitarist Cary DeNegris, bassist Reginald Washington, violinist Akbar Ali and saxaphonist Eric Person on this recording persons in conjunction with African singers/percussionists Twins Seven Seven. The result of the collaboration, while interesting, lacks much of the fire that the older Decoding Society had.

By and large the pieces are invested in funky African rhythms, they have a nice sound, the playing is good all around (particularly Washington, who adds a good slap funk sensibility and slithers nicely between Jackson's rhythms), but there's by and large something really quite unfulfilling about the record. It just doesn't burn. The band did much better work, this is a curiosity piece more than having any intrinsic value.

Although I'm not sure about liner comments that Dianno "is rightly known for possessing the finest voice in heavy metal," _The Beast Live_ is a testament to Paul's stunning range of fine melody and dark heaviness, divine harmony and Goth-power, if you will. PD manages to pull out what is best about each of these songs. The first five songs are all killers, and PD's rendition of "Remember Tomorrow" is compellingly nostalgic. The sound quality here is superb. Do not underestimate Paul Dianno's validity to Iron Maiden in particular or heavy metal in general. If you're into old-school metal or nut-grinding power, this is for you.
