Reverence Beyond Technical Virtuosity.......2000-03-21
Scholar in theology and philosopy, organist and author of a still influential study on J.S.Bach and his music, Schweitzer approached a near-mystic perception of his subject's intended message. Especially in the "Liebster Jesu Wir Sind Hier" we hear a reverence beyond technical virtuosity; Schweitzer's tempo reflects meditation on words unspoken, yet musically understood. The flash and wizardry of other interpretations cheapen in proximity to this CD's brilliant simplicity. Here is Bach as Bach intended; here, too, we feel Schweitzer's living compassion and purpose. Buy this CD - it speaks.

Awesome! 5 stars without a doubt!.......2006-04-06
I have trouble describing why this album is so good, but I'll try. Basically, it comes down to a solid mix of well played music and superbly crafted lyrics. Tom has a style all his own, and has many fresh sounds throughout. I was surprised at his lyrical depth, and how the music does more than scratch the surface. His unique blend of instruments on some of the tracks really add flavor to the music. The variety in the songs is also nice. The album flows well, going from a faster song to a slower song, to a mid-tempo tune. There is not one bad song on here. The music is quite spiritual also, yet it's not preachy. I find it inspiring actually. Its just real music and lyrics from a real guy. His writing style actually reminds me a little bit of Jackson Browne, although the music isn't the same. Either way, this album is phenomenal. I'm really looking forward to another album. I love this one!

Bach Organ Works - Helmut Walcha.......2007-01-05
I never thought I would like Bach's organ works as they can be dense and daunting. However, if you can get onto Bach's wavelength, he can transport you to an electric cosmos of beauty and enlightenment. I was given a collection of Bach organ LPs by Helmut Walcha some time ago. My friend said that Germans regard Walcha as the premier interpreter of this music. He certainly knows how to play the organ and this music soars in his hands. This music is more varied than most people imagine. Some is extremely simple and delicate while some crushes your brain! I have always loved Archive recordings and these did not disappoint!
Glorious.......2006-07-01
Helmut Walcha was named my TIME as "the" Bach interpreter for organ. I think that is true more than ever today with all the influences of the French Romantic school, the slam-dunk American style and the avant garde crowd. The recording has a German sound, quintessentially Teutonic in both style and approach. While Bach sounds different and even magnificient on an Aristide Cavaillé-Coll organ it does not sound authentic - or as we perceive authenticity.
The fact that the artist is blind(!) means that unlike other folks who can use the music as aids, he must rely on his phenomenal memory. This is truly the stuff of genius. The sonatas are brilliant and I have never heard a better B Minor Prelude & Fugue. I only with that his stupendous "Kunst der Fuge" could have been transferred from record to CD.
Religious experience........2006-03-04
This set of many Bach's Organ works by Helmut Walcha is, in my opinion, the greatest recording of these immortal treasures. There are almost all of Bach's Preludes and Fugues for organ, as well as many fantasias, miscallenous works and his chorals for this instrument. Walcha plays with utmost respect to the original scores, his playing is clear and powerful. Many other organists have allowed themselves quite a bit of experiment with these pieces (likes of Ton Koopman are over the top), but in the end, i've always came back to Walcha's renditions. If you want to treat yourself with some of the greatest music ever written, then get this rare set! Bach's organ music can be challenging at first, especially the fugues, and many of my friends have complained that they hear nothing else than noise in these pieces. I suppose you have to have listened this kind of music for quite some time, before you can wholly appreciate these unique pieces. But once you have, you find a world full of riches and wonder, world which only Bach can bring you. And this is a world i wouldn't change for any riches in the world.
A real bargain at under $100.......2005-12-20
It is hard to express in words what an incredible achievement this is. The immense feats of memory alone, demanding far greater efforts than sighted performers face, command our respect. So does the consistent quality of Walcha's playing.
Bach's almost mathematical absorbtion with fugue lies at the centre of his genius. He was an organist first and foremost, an organist all his life. Like Bach, Walcha is an obsessive controller who uses music to shape his world. He treats each piece as a treasure to be cherished and burnished, and this makes him the greatest Bach organist since Schweitzer. We are told that Bach would travel miles to hear great organists perform, and Helmut Walcha is just such an organist as those.
The magnificent instrument used here is celestial in tone. To those for whom Bach fugues conjure up images of Christopher Lee playing Dracula, or dull Sundays in church, here is one of the great achievements of Western civilization, a glittering pinnacle of Baroque art, performed by a great modern spirit, in one handy box. You can't have Michaelangelo ceilings in your home, or Bernini bronzes in your living room, but by golly, you can put this on your stereo.
Heavenly music.......2005-02-23
I'm not a big organ music fan- maybe it's because it reminds this atheist too much of church! But the music here by Bach, and especially the playing by Walcha are just fantastic. I was dubious that I could find interest in 11 CDs of organ music, but I'm enthralled by every minute of each disc. A wonderful bargain!

Old Friends, Rejuvenated.......2007-04-02
I have known these recordings since they were first issued on LP in the 1960's, and I am more than delighted that they have been reissued on CDs with even cleaner and fuller sonics. I agree wholeheartedly with the other reviews that have thus far appeared here on Amazon and can add only one or two additional comments:
Karl Richter's Bach performances, although they represented a departure from the over-romanticized treatments of Baroque music that had prevailed up to his time, were not the kind of trailblazing return-to-authenticity projects of Trevor Pinnock, Christopher Hogwood, and others, whose early-music-performance practices continue to be the standard today. Thus, in the matter of tempos, Richter may sound a little slow to some modern ears; however, he generally goes at a faster clip than his contemporary, E. Power Biggs, and his predecessor Albert Schweitzer, but not as fast as Anthony Newman and others who have followed in more recent years. His tempos and style are perfect for my taste, however: almost sassy compared with Biggs, yet much more tasteful than Fox (not that I am immune to enjoying the latter's excesses), and less frenetic than Newman.
The recording quality is excellent and works in concert with some nicely pungent reeds in the organ to produce results of sparkling clarity.
As a side note, I found it interesting that two of the three CDs contain over 81 minutes of music; I had thought 80 was the absolute limit (other than for MP3 discs).
Music for a Winter's Day.......2007-02-27
Between 1964 and 1980 Karl Richter (1926 --1981) made extensive recordings of Bach's organ music. These recordings have recently been reissued by Deutsche Grammophon in a 3-CD set as part of its "Legendary Recordings" series. This set is a joy for those who love the organ. It includes four hours of Bach's greatest music for the instrument, beautifully played. It was the ideal companion for me during this past snow and icebound weekend in Washington D.C.
Richter, of course, was best-known as a conductor of early music, but this set also shows him as a master of the organ. He made most of these recordings between 1964 and 1969 performing on a modern organ at the Jaegersborg Church near Copenhagen. The final three works in the collection date from 1978 and were recorded on a historic Silbermann organ at the Freiburg Cathedral. This instrument has a warmer sound than the modern instrument at Jaegersborg Church.
This set captures Bach's organ music in all its variety, including its icy grandeur and its moments of meditative reflection. Bach's organ music is learned, inspiring, and emotional. Written for church performances, it reaches towards the transcendent, regardless of the listener's creed. The set includes a cross-section of the major works and styles in Bach's output for the instrument. For most listeners, some selections will be familiar while, for all but those listeners with broad familiarity with Bach's organ works, some will be new.
The set opens with an arresting performance of the familiar Toccata and Fugue in d-minor, BWV 565 which some scholars do not attribute to Bach. The other work in this collection with widespread recognition, is the Schubler chorale arrangement of "Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme," which Ricther takes in a meditative, slow tempo. Richter also performs several additional preludes including: "Kommst du nun, Jesus, von Himmel herunter", BWV 650 and a later prelude from a set of 18, "Schmucke dich, o liebe Seele", BWV 654, which also receives a deeply introspective interpretation. Of the final works Richter recorded, two are late chorales, "O Gott, dur frommer Gott", BWV 767 and "Sei gregusset, Jesu guting", BWV 768.
The flowing c minor Passacaglia and Fugue, BWV 582 was one of the highlights of this CD. This is passionate, lyrical and seeking music with an opening movement written in the same style as Pachbel's familiar Canon. The large-scaled Toccata and Fugue in F major, BWV receives a compelling performance, as does the G minor Fantasie and Fugue, BWV 552. Other two-movement works include the prelude and Fugues in D major, BWV 532, a-minor, BWV 543, E flat major, BWV 552, e minor, BWV 548 and B minor, BWV 544.
In addition to these grand works, the set also includes three of Bach's trio sonatas for organ, BWV 525, 526, and 529. These works are each in three movements with fast outer movements surrounding a reflective slow movement. These works tend to be less austure than Bach's other compositions for the organ and suggest, in places, the galant, graceful style of musical composition that would soon replace Bach's baroque.
Richter plays this music with discipline and romantic feeling. He makes full and effective use of the tonal qualities of his instruments, and his playing is beautifully recorded. The liner notes, unfortunately, are sparse and not particularly informative. I am grateful for a winter weekend which left me housebound to draw inspiration from this glorious music. Lovers of Bach's organ music will want to return many times to Richter's performances.

THE BEST OF BACH + THE BEST OF KARL RICHTER.......2005-08-15
Here we have the best organ works of J S BACH played by the well
known director KARL RICHTER.
He includes one Prelude and FUgue on each key form the original
ones written for organ. So we can say we have here a Well Tempered
Organ by JS BACH.
I recommed it to all that want to listen the best of his organ
works without having to buy a complete set.As I said there are
Preludes and Fugues in all keys from c to b,Trio Sonatas,Choral
Preludes from Orgelbuechlein,Schuebler and the Leipzig 18 sets,
Choral Variations or Partitas and free pieces like the Canzona.
The negative here is the booklet for different reasons:
Mistakes on the organ building dates.
No list of stops (ALL the original LPs included the list of stops
on the back cover).
The order of tracks in the cd is a complete non sense:instead of
following the order of the originals LPs,or the order of the
original taping during several years (the LPs were not recorded
at the same time)the tracks come with an unexplained order, they
not even watch for a combination:like including something between
the trio sonatas, they put one after the other.
The booklet indicates at the end pictures of the artist by Werner
Neumeister, and there are no pictures at all in the booklet.
It does not have any notes on the compositions included.
Now we know that the DGG company has made other CDs with Richter
including very complete booklets like that Passions, etc that have
70 or 80 pages, why then come with a set of cd with such a booklet
Karl Richter made several trips from his Munich area to Denmark
for these recordings trying to give a unified sample of J S Bach
organ works.Just think that there are plenty of other organs in
Germany to play and record, but he made as I said several trips to
Copenhagen area to record these masterpieces of the organ.
My favorite one is the Prelude and Fugue in e minor called the
Wedge. The reason is the constant changing colors in the prelude
and the virtuosity of the fuge, with its own colors making this
piece a unique color masterpiece. Here Richter goes over all using
a small instrument. All interested in the list of stops, can visit
the organ builder website:Marcussen and look for the Jaegesborg
organ, and will understand the reason why Karl Richter traveled
overseas for several years, to sample the best organ works JSBach
ever composed for the organ.
I strongly recommed these CDs as the BEST OF BACH BY KARL RICHTER

Customer Reviews:
Bach for professional listeners.......2006-01-30
What I found amazing about this boxset is the opportunity to enjoy Bach in complete form. From my point of view Passacaglia performed by Werner Jacob is a five star performance. Also BWV 593 and BWV 596 push up and show up no limits for the listener. This 16 CDs aggregate the perfect union between the artist, instrument, listener and Bach. And at the end of the day I can say that organ works can still be ... trendy. Enjoy!
Bach Organ Works on original organs.......2004-10-24
121 organ tracks or works on 16 CDs has to be spaced out in about six days. The music is so restful I found myself dowsing. The price for a new set through Amazon was right. Bach organ hymns made Luther.

Customer Reviews:
Historical Snapshot.......2005-06-04
This CD is significant in that it is so far the only Heavy Organ performance to make it to CD. Virgil Fox's Heavy Organ tour did a lot to popularize classical organ music and bring it to a wider audience. Although the Rodgers "Black Beauty" touring organ sounds a bit dated by the standards of today's digital instruments, it was state of the art for analog organs in its day. So the sound might not knock your socks off, but this is as close as you'll get to imagining what it must have been like to see Fox live at the peak of his popularity.
Hard to take.......2003-02-02
This is not the best Virgil Fox CD- the Rodgers Touring organ is unable to perform at the level of larger organs. I recommend earlier recordings of Virgil Fox's in his Aeolian-Skinner 5-manual at Riverside Church, NY. That aside, this is still Fox, and is reason enough to buy this CD.
Has not aged well.......2002-11-17
I grew up on Virgil Fox. But this CD really butchered the performance. The old vinyl Heavy Organ series was actually cleaner sounding, had less of Fox's peculiarities and over-talk. A disappointment.
The "Fox Style" of Bach playing.......2000-11-03
This recording was originally issued as Volume 2; another Heavy Organ at CArnegie Hall album was made a year before this one and hopefully will be reissued on CD at some point. This album is a good example of Virgil Fox's approach to Bach's music. One hears kaleidoscopic registrations (a performance trademark of Fox's that was always controversial) and a dramatic, fiery style of playing. There are fewer quiet works on this album -- one, the final St Matthew Passion chorus, really doesn't come off well due to the overused tremolo and an articulation that doesn't allow the music to flow well. But I think the best track on the album is the shortest: Fox's performance of "Rejoice, Beloved Christians", shows phenomenal technique and lightning speed, yet is utterly delicate and graceful -- a rendition that is simply unassailable. The Wedge Prelude and Fugue, though containing some mistakes, is a very dramatic and noble interpretation. This record is far, far superior to Fox's first Heavy Organ album from Fillmore East, which suffers from numerous wrong notes and mistakes.
Legendary Organist gives Legendary live performance.......2000-01-14
Want to hear a performer really communicate with his audience? This is the CD for you. A diverse and impinging introduction to the music of J.S. Bach, as well as Virgil's musical stylings, make this CD a must-have for anyone interested in classical organ, Bach, or how to give a successful live performance of classical music. Although the crowd's boistreous enthusiasm occasionally interrupts the flow of the show, there isn't a single bad cut on the entire album.

Customer Reviews:
The Art of Virgil Fox Vol. 2.......2007-04-01
I find the recording quality of this CD to be very good. As a child I had the opportunity to meet the organist Virgil Fox through my mother, who was a friend and colleague of his (she was the soprano soloist at the Riverside Church where he was organist - the Riverside Church is also the place where the recordings were made). I also heard Mr. Fox live and found him to be a first-class artist. I can recommend the CD without reservation. Alexander Stevenson
!.......2003-11-19
This CD is just a small sample of the greatness of Virgil Fox. However, it is a must-have. It demonstrates the breadth of works which Fox mastered and in the more sentimental songs, those which he beautifully interpreted during his illustrious career; and these recordings at Riverside Church are an indispensable part of his legacy. The program starts with the majestic "We All Believe in one God", where we hear the control of dynamics and unique way Fox played Bach. Vaughn-Williams' work is an interesting fantasia on the familiar religious tune. The highlight of the CD is the Perpetuum Mobile. A favorite concert piece of Fox, it is an amazing flurry of notes, showing his amazing mastery of the pedalboard, and building to a tremendous crescendo and brilliant arpeggio. Giga is a rapid, merry piece which romps along in the manuals. Tracks 1-4 are the virtuoso organ pieces. Starting with Love's Old Sweet Song, # 5-13, the great interpretations of transcriptions, songs, and sentimental American pieces begin. The piano work Kamenoi Ostrow is a great transcription. A Dream and Calm as the Night are beautiful songs which are beautifully styled on the organ. In short, buy this CD - it is a musical and masterful recording.

The Bach renaissance--which began in earnest in the early 19th century thanks to the efforts of Felix Mendelssohn and others--inspired an endeavor of far-reaching significance. It led to the founding of the Bach Society in 1850, with the goal of gathering and publishing the composer's complete works, and thus set into motion one of the great projects of musical scholarship. That effort has continued and been refined throughout the 20th century, ultimately influencing not only our perception of how to perform early music but fundamental ideas of musical history, evolution, and reception as well.
Teldec's mammoth Bach 2000 box set represents a kind of culmination of that original attempt to come to terms with Johann Sebastian Bach's unparalleled legacy. This set brings together performances recorded over the last several decades--a small percentage of the recordings are previously unreleased--of all the extant works determined by modern scholarship to be authentic. There are also some pieces the authorship of which is still in question and a few now deemed "inauthentic" but familiarly associated with the composer. Bach was a prodigious reviser of his compositions, and alternate versions of a particular work have been included "where the changes seemed sufficiently important," such as the glorious Magnificat. No doubt manuscripts will continue to be unearthed here and there in various archives (Bach 2000 contains, for example, the "Neumeister chorales," which were rediscovered in 1984), but the set does not represent the many fragments of music that consist of just a few bars; however, there are some reconstructions of lost concertos (such as one for three violins reconstructed by Christopher Hogwood from an extant concerto for harpsichords).
Of course a truly comprehensive recorded edition of every note Bach wrote remains a utopian impossibility--about one-third of his cantatas, for example, have not survived. Even so, the dimensions of Bach 2000 are staggering. With its 12 boxes comprising 153 CDs, the set can be compressed into fewer boxes to save shelf space yet is still about ten times as long as the Ring cycle. (It should be noted that the packaging--using thin cardboard sleeves for the CDs--is distinctively unattractive.) That adds up to just under 160 hours of music--but a lifetime of discovery. Each box (grouped according to genre) contains a booklet with excellent notes on individual works and--for all the choral works--texts and translations. Tracking indexes are useful and thorough. Also included is a profusely illustrated hardbound volume of 24 Inventions, in which journalist Wolfgang Sandberger uses the composer's biography as a peg for some enigmatic and fascinating musings on the meaning of Bach today.
The presiding philosophy behind this project and its approach to musical interpretation can be largely ascribed to Nikolaus Harnoncourt, a true musical pioneer and galvanizing force of the "period performance" movement. Harnoncourt's epoch-making recordings of the sacred cantatas (using, for instance, boy sopranos and choristers according to the practice in Bach's time) with the Concentus musicus Wien and colleague Gustav Leonhardt comprise the first four volumes here (those who already own them can turn to the Bach 2000 Light edition, which contains everything sans the cantatas). These recordings--which were not remastered for this set--have long been controversial and are notably uneven, embracing some magnificent accounts as well as others that lack fire and seem clearly underrehearsed. But Harnoncourt is one of the most fascinating conductors of our era, and his interpretations amply bear out his assertion: "I have never felt that Bach worked in a routine manner, that he repeated himself in his works." Harnoncourt--who has articulated many of his ideas in his book The Musical Dialogue--displays his gifts as a cellist in a remarkably probing performance of the Cello Suites (originally recorded in 1965) and in his concertizing for a number of chamber works. For the St. Matthew Passion, you get Harnoncourt's groundbreaking earlier account from 1970, while his 1986 recording of the sublime B Minor Mass is also represented here (the St. John Passion included is Harnoncourt's 1995 acount).
Other artists included are colleague Gustav Leonhardt, whose thoughtful if occasionally dry harpsichord artistry is heard in the Goldberg Variations as well as in the concertos and chamber music. The harpsichord is in fact used throughout in preference to piano for the keyboard works. Ton Koopman (himself the conductor of an ongoing complete cantata series and of the Easter Oratorio included here) performs the organ works, including some newly recorded offerings, while Il Giardino Armonico's well-known high-energy account represents the Brandenburg Concertos. Violinist Thomas Zehetmair is exceptionally compelling in the unaccompanied sonatas and partitas, and the Concentus musicus Wien--again under Harnoncourt--perform a superb Musical Offering that richly repays frequent listening.
The result of Bach 2000 as a whole is an aptly encyclopedic grappling with the infinite legacy of this most compendious of composers, whose works are on one level a summation of all the styles available to him. Bach was once thought to represent a "terminal point" (to use Albert Schweitzer's famous formulation), the end of an era; today he is at least equally recognized as a fertile source of inspiration for composers since. To be sure, individual recordings of particular works will be found to be preferable, and it would be misguided to consider Bach 2000 any kind of "final" or "definitive" word. Instead, it's an indispensable starting point that represents a monumental achievement for our own contemporary understanding of Bach. --Thomas May

Customer Reviews:
Bach is priceless.......2006-11-10
I believe, as another reviewer has stated, Bach's music may be the best ever written. Also, I think the cantatas are not where Bach placed his heart and soul. He was, after all, employed as a canter and in a position he did not wish for, but was forced to take to feed his large family. (I recommend "Bach and the High Baroque" lecture series by TTC.) What really stands out on this collection are all works in volumes 8 and above. Some of these works are hard to find and having them all in this collection and preformed on original instruments is great. Bach is priceless and so then is this collection.
Buy the works you like...........2006-01-11
If you love Bach, which you must if you are looking at this particular item, you probably own a couple of his works already. Perhaps some of them are on the Teldec label. There is nothing wrong with Teldec if you are just getting into "classical" music. You will probably enjoy the music thoroughly. I know I did, as one of the first "classical" releases I bought was on Teldec, and it was Bach. I was amazed how great Bach was. Then my brother showed me the same recording, performed by another group, on another label. It had a lot more passion, and the instrumentalists were obviously of a higher level. Pardon my rambling, but what I'm trying to say is, the recordings found in this boxset are not the "cream of the crop." They are perfectly acceptable, easily listenable renditions of what many consider the greatest music...EVER. Take it from me, someone who has leapt into boxset land one too many times: Save your money, buy the individual albums. Take your time, talk to record store clerks (read Amazon reviews), do your research. If you are lucky enough to have a decent record store around, listen to multiple versions of the same work. No one said you had to buy it all at once. It can take a lifetime to fully realize the potency of this music, so enjoy the discovery as long as possible.
Poor Bach.......2005-11-26
In Antony & Cleopatra, Shakespeare wrote: "I shall see some squeaking Cleopatra boy my greatness...."
I am 99% in favor of original instrument performances, but there are limits. Just imagine if we had the same sort of thing going on with Shakespeare's plays -- men and boys playing all of the women's parts. And if we *really* wanted to be original, they would be squeaking boys "I' th' posture of a whore" (Shakespeare's words). Such performances would knock Monty Python
right out of business.
The Cantatas, which are the lion's share of this collection, are sung by boys, boys, boys. If you want to ruin boy choirs for yourself, then go for it. It might still be a novelty by the fifth CD but by the fiftieth, you will want to throw your &*%$ wig at the squeaking speakers, just as the exasperated Bach famously did with his own wig and his own boy choir. (For which he was reprimanded.)
Does Harnoncourt really, honestly think that Bach would have picked a boy choir if he could have had women? Does anyone seriously believe that Shakespeare would have preferred his parts played by boys instead of women?
If you buy this set, don't buy it for the Cantatas, unless (unlike Bach) you can tolerate immature voices with "wig-tossingly" inconsistent intonation. Hold out for Suzuki or Koopman. Stay away from the Rifkin perfomances, mostly because the recording quality is second and third rate by today's standards. Not that historical performances should be shunned, but you might want to think twice about 60 odd CDs worth of second rate sound.
A Treasure Trove.......2004-03-07
This set is the culmination of several decades of work on the part of the West German record label Teldec (formerly known as Telefunken-Decca). With their early-music subdivision Das Alte Werk (similar to DG's Archiv or Decca's L'Oiseau-Lyre), Teldec have been in the forefront of exploring the world of period instruments and authentic performance practice, with special emphasis on the works of J.S.Bach. The lion's share of recordings here was originally made for Das Alte Werk, with the odd exception here and there licensed from other labels in order to fill in the gaps. The centerpiece of the set is the famous recording of the 199 church cantatas by Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Gustav Leonhardt. If you're not familiar with the cantatas, there's a whole world of drama, color and expression right here waiting for you. You'll also be surprised to learn how many of the "tunes" you know from popular arrangements, like "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" and "Sleepers Awake" are actually movements from cantatas. The names of Harnoncourt and Leonhardt pop up again and again; they were both mainstays of the Teldec roster. Leonhardt gives us his 1965 Goldberg Variations on a Dulcken harpsichord whose every tone is like a bell, and Harnoncourt's "home" recording of the Cello Suites (never intended for general release) shows the ferment of a great musical mind. Ton Koopman gives us his provocative and controversial re-thinkings of the organ works, and Thomas Zehetmair's performances of the unaccompanied violin sonatas and partitas are like dramatic scenes spoken by a solo violin. Here are the uniquely bizarre Brandenburg Concertos by Il Giardino Armonico; the rhetorical and transparent performance of the motets conducted by Harnoncourt (perhaps his best-ever recording); Leonhardt's relaxed and smiling versions of the harpsichord concertos; Alice Harnoncourt's tawny, leonine performances of the sonatas for violin and harpsichord; Harnoncourt's chiaroscuro-filled performance of the Christmas Oratorio, and so on. This set is one of the most worthwhile CD buys you could make. You will never be bored with this to dip into over the years.
147 out of 153 ain't bad!.......2001-04-29
Having listened to the complete set, I can confidently recommend it, if you would use a complete set of Bach's works.
If you really like Bach, it is well worth getting. You will read disparaging reviews which will tell you that there are better performances of individual works. But this is a great opportunity for a Bach lover to get very good versions of his entire oeuvre.
In the set of 60 CDs of sacred cantatas, there are about 6 duds, which feature out of tune boy sopranos! If you are not crazy about sacred cantatas, you can buy a set which omits them, which may be advised!
I love the version of the Mass in B minor, though it is very different from our set by Munchinger [which we really enjoy].
The Brandenburgs are great. THe first movement of the first concerto is a knock out! Very brassy and bombastic: quite different from the 3 or 4 other versions I have previously enjoyed.
We are a piano family and have many CDs of Bach keyboard works played on piano [though we also have the Well Tempered Clavier on harpsichord and clavichord] The keyboard performances in the set are all on harpsichord and are lively and very enjoyable.
It takes some getting used to the authentic Baroque flute performances: especially occasional out-of-tuneness. But these are also interesting and musically played.
If you would use a set of all of Bach's extant works, it is a great choice. It is competitively priced and I love the packaging.

Album Description
Ann Arbor, Michigan, seems an unlikely site for the establishment of a major avant-garde festival that would shake the new-music community. Tucked away in America's heartland, the city is equally removed from the Eastern metropolises whose artists pride themselves on sensing the pulse of the times, and from the nonconformist West Coast. Yet during the 1960s Ann Arbor played host to one of the most extraordinary adventures in American music history: the annual ONCE Festival and its nexus of related activities.
The primary aim of ONCE's founders--Robert Ashley, Gordon Mumma, George Cacioppo, Roger Reynolds, and Donald Scavarda--was to create a forum for the presentation of cutting-edge music. To this end they were phenomenally successful. Performers and composers--whether little-known or renowned--embraced the endeavor, demanding almost nothing in return. Perhaps most important, however, ONCE acted as a creative stimulus for its organizers. Scavarda describes the adventure as an explosion of pent-up energy: "Suddenly we could write anything we wanted and have it heard." And they did. The ONCE composers--and many guest artists--wrote a host of new works, some experimental, others more traditional.
What united the ONCE composers was their exploration of sound, whether through the medium of extended techniques on traditional instruments, electronic (or electronically modified) timbres, or the intersection of musical sounds with those of the environment.
A major slice of ONCE's rich musical legacy--35 works constituting six hours of music--is presented here, almost all for the first time. These pieces are as diverse in style as they are compelling in expression. This landmark set, the most comprehensive document ever released of this legendary event, is an opportunity for anyone interested in contemporary music to hear history in the making. Included in the set is a 140-page booklet with a lengthy scholarly essay by musicologist and biographer Leta Miller and numerous rare photos of ONCE personages and performances.
