As these dimpled moptops from Oklahoma grow pepper-bearded and transform into wizened elder statesmen of sonic adventuring, the heartfelt candy of their loving bubblegum stretches ever longer into echoing soundscapes. If Radiohead are halfway to becoming U2, the Flaming Lips are nine-tenths of the way to pop nirvana. Hardly a song on Yoshimi isn't resonated, echoed, and reverberated--floating the listener higher until they have the ultimate bird's-eye view of what makes a great band tick. As with any album by the band, it's hard not to imagine parades and a sky filled with helium balloons while you listen to any of it--in this case, the party is enhanced brilliantly by digital filters and silver shimmering asides. The most immediate songs, like "One More Robot (3000-21)," are digital (almost trip-hop) dance numbers that lift the band out of the cornfields and into the loopy land of Björk. Little surprise, then, that the band are already following up this majestic splash of gummy bear brilliance by recording a CD with kids' TV show host Steve from Blue's Clues. It's like Woodstock meets Snoopy! --Ian Christe
Album Description
Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots, The Flaming Lips' long awaited follow-up to 1999's The Soft Bulletin. Guest artist Yoshimi P-we plays with psyche-noise-experimental group the Boredoms and leads her own band OOIOO. The Yoshimi in the songs, however, is a fictional character. 11 tracks. 2002.

But the moment never came..........2007-06-19
that I was disappointed in any track on this album! I haven't had too much exposure to TFL but had to buy this album from having heard "Do You Realize" and seen the album cover and title. Irresistible. I hear something new each time I listen - fave tracks include "Fight Test", "Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell" and "All We Have is Now". Get it!
Flaming Lips - A Tripped Out Gem.......2007-03-02
Up until a few years ago my only exposure to The Flaming Lips was that horrible single "Vaseline" (or whatever it was called) that got a ton of radio airplay back in the late 90's. I really really really hated that song and totally wrote this band off. Then in early 2003 I kept seeing this "Yoshimi" album pop up on a lot of people's "best album of the year" lists for 2002. After reading reviews and talking to others who had it I finally decided to pick it up and give this band a chance. I can happily say that I am glad I did. This is a fantastic album and one that does not easily fit into any easy categories. The album is a mix of psychedilea, electronica, pure pop, and progressive rock. It is really different from anything else I have in my music collection. The whole album flows together seamlessly in a dreamy floating way. The lyrics tell the loose story of a girl named Yoshimi who is fighting against evil robots. The first four songs pretty much follow the story line and then the material kind of drifts away from it. All of the songs on the album are great from the opening "Flight Test" through the instrumental closer "Approaching Pavonis Mons By Balloon". It is all a tripy fantasy ride that takes the listener to a dreamy sci fi world. I don't own any other Lips albums, so I don't have anything to compare it to, but if I definitely need to explore more from this band.
An Essential Album.......2007-02-19
Never heard of the Flaming Lips, one of rock's most unusual acts hailing from of all places, Oklahoma City, OK? Unbelievably, the band is nearing their 25Th anniversary. Their career is a long storied one, filled with bizarre tales, wildly ambitious projects, and a decent turnover of musicians. The band's sound certainly has changed over the years. While front man and co-founder, Wayne Coyne, says that the Lips are in their final incarnation, that doesn't mean that their genius won't continue on. Wayne, Steven Drozd, and Michael Ivins still have alot to say and they keep finding the most fascinating ways to say it. One could buy any one of the last three lips albums, "Yoshimi," "The Soft Bulletin," and 2006's effort "At War With the Mystics," and have an excellent album on their hands. I'm particularly fond of Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots.
The Lips music blends addictive pop sensibility, smart earnest lyrics, with a huge assortment of sounds. The music is at the same time overtly psychedelic and tenderly melodic, without ever being abrasive or unfocused. While all the Lips albums are in a sense concept albums, Yoshimi's story and sound could be the most cohesive. It's easy to suggest 911 played a role in the subtext of this album. The same goes for the Iraq war in the equally brilliant "At War with the Mystics." Both albums, despite employing a political subtext, are irresistably catchy. If you've never heard the Lips, Yoshimi's first three songs might be best thing you've heard in years. The story of Yoshimi starts to become more abstract after Pt 2 but the remaining songs are nothing short of genius. One particular highlight is "Do You Realize." The orchestral sound combined with simple, off the cuff, yet surprisingly poignant and heartfelt lyrics is like a dose of the sweetest most heavenly gooseberry pie you'll ever taste. No really. Do You Realize doesn't ask as much from its audience as say, "Imagine," but its bittersweet message is just as grandious.
In a nutshell, The Lips are making some of the most breathtaking music around. If you haven't heard their stuff or seen one of their legendary shows you're missing out big time. Pick it up, the whole family will love the Flaming Lips. I Promise!
Bought this today and I love it and not 13 it's just easier........2006-12-14
It took me a while to delve into the Lips. They are good and great to listen to but they won't surpass Beck on my playlist if the mood calls for Beck. Anyway, I got into the Lips thanks to this wonderful girl I met when I started college. She invited me to her dorm and asked if I heard of the Flaming Lips, I had heard of them at the time but never listened to them. I was amazed at what I was hearing when she put the CD in. This album is just spacey and dreamy, very nice to listen to when you are in a good mood. I bought At War with the Mystics and somewhat liked it, but when said girl loaned me Yoshimi I loved it and made a note to buy it. Overall, very enjoyable and a great album to sing along to with the girls especially Do You Realzie??
good album!.......2006-11-05
I liked it a lot. a combination of soft/hard and electronic/melodic. If you like to flow into thoughts about different worlds it also works very well...

Customer Reviews:
my favorite flaming lips album.......2007-05-22
i am a huge fan of the flaming lips, and i must say that this is my favorite album. i think this is probably the only flaming lips album that is completely perfect. every song on this album is just absolutely amazing. and the dvd disc is awesome, some really good songs on it that you couldnt hear elsewhere. deffinately buy this. id say even if you have this album already, you should still buy this special edition just to hear it in surround, and to hear the bonus songs, its still worth it to buy it again.
Taken a chance here..........2007-04-02
...but it was well worth it. Never heard these guys before, but heard good reviews of this...I mean, come on...pink robots???? But clever lyrics and an astounding 5.1 sound, it really grows on you with time. Now I listen to it to unwind and really love it's fresh sound and Waynes mellow vocals. Very aggressive surround...but quite enjoyable. And this is from a guy who love Bach!
5.1 mix is a bit gimmicky...but still worth it.......2005-06-30
I love the album. And the 5.1 mix is enjoyable. But it strikes me as a bit gimmicky. Sure, it shows off sound coming from every direction, but it doesn't sound natural enough to me. If you read the liner notes that come with the album, for example, you'll see that on one track, they simply move the sound around the room in a clockwise direction. On another the bass moves around on every single note. It's almost like they had some presets they could program in rather than really looking at the music and thinking about what would sound best. Rather it sounds like they're "playing". Not that it's a bad mix. The Lips have a quirky sound, so a slightly quirky mix is not all bad. If something like a Led Zeppelin album were mixed like this, it would be awful. Since it's the Lips, it works okay.
But simply moving the audio around the room quickly or on every note does *not* make an "awesome" mix.
Surround Masterpiece.......2005-06-09
Now this is the reason I have spent so much on surround equipment over the years! This is just wonderful. Summertime and Do You Realize alone are worth the price. Just buy this, you will not be sorry. The guys really know what they are doing, and it's one of my favorite surround recordings to date.
Prepare to be engulfed in the music of the Flaming Lips.......2005-02-22
This is one of those great albums that comes every once a year. A MUST HAVE CD/DVD set. Not only is this a great album, it is also far superior due to the 5.1 surround audio on the DVD. When you listen to this in the 5.1 audio, be prepared, this music will swallow you up and swish you in its mouth. It is AMAZING! You will feel as if you are in another world with spacey sounds, swirling drumkits, crazy synths, oh and of course the Flaming Lips behind it all. This is truly the only way (5.1) to listen to music. AND AN EVEN MORE EXTRA BONUS is the CRAZY ANIMATIONS THAT DANCE TO THE MUSIC on the DVD. Its incredibly mind-blowing to watch and listen. The Flaming Lips have a masterpiece of music and animations on this CD/DVD album. Ear Candy tracks include: "In the Morning of Magicians", "Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell", "Fight Test", and "Are you a Hypnotist??".

Wow!!!.......2007-02-07
All I can really say is Wow! This blew me away, with all its shredding and little excerpts of weird characters talking about "head cheese", but dont get me wrong, he puts in a lot of complex music, its not all fast guitar playing, like in "Who me?" when it sounds like he's crying during the slow playing. and there's techno like in "Nunchaka Kata". Overall great for the kids, if your kids are sick twisted freaks who love great rock-funk music. Highly recommended.
Second rate, forgettable guitarist... WAY WAY OVERRATED!!!.......2006-07-17
You deluded people must be on crack AND antidepressants! I purchased and listened to this CD with high hopes, given some of the enthusiastically positive reviews here. Aside from the masturbatory pseudo-rapping and ridiculous and infantile chicken-klucking sound effects, and other miscellaneous and ridiculous utterances, there are some guitar moments where 'Buckethead' shows he can somewhat shred, but it ultimately all sounds the same and quite gimmicky. Sure he can play fast, but he is most certainly NOT a world-class, STYLISTIC technical player like Uli Jon Roth, Michael Schenker, Alex Lifeson, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Tony Iommi, Ritchie Blackmore, Glenn Tipton, Dave Murray, Akira Takasaki, Yngwie Malmsteen, Michael Romeo, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Rik Emmett, Brian May, etc. etc., just to name a few greats that 'blow away' KFC-head. In fact, Buckethead is a cheesy, second-rate guitarist who pales in comparison to the world's masters! I'm sorry, but he is BORING. He plays nothing that hasn't been played or tried before. Don't waste your money or time. My copy is going to end up in my local retailer's 'bargain bin'! And with good reason.
WOW!!!!!.......2006-02-25
Edgy but beautiful . My first Buckethead and she's a bute!! If you like guitar gods such as Steve Morse, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai etc than this is definitely a cd to wet yourself upon. Enjoy the listen ..... I did again again and again!!!
no finer bucket..........2006-02-11
buckethead's best work is when he feels free to be himself and not obliged to consider sounding like someone else, and on this CD he is totally at his best; perhaps having claypool around does not hurt either. i have listened carefully to most of his work and this i believe is head and shoulders above the rest. one has to determine what it is they seek from an artist and in buckethead's case it is his raw fingernumbing bunkerbeat and great turnpike sound. i appreciate his ability to be very tasteful and even classical, but someone who calls himself buckethead has to consider his own invention above all else and that's what he's done on this his finest work, in my book, to date! This CD will not leave you twitching for full throttle because it's all there.
Buckethead's Electric Opus.......2005-12-22
While Colma may have shown the best of Bucket's softer side, Monsters and Robots takes the cake for Buckethead's electric work. And what an album it is. Allow me to take a song-by-song review:
1.) Jump Man- Great song, an effervescent opener that reall gets the blood flowing. Bootsy cracks me up on this track, and all of Buckethead's trademark shredding is in place. 5/5
2.) Stick Pit- Awesome follow-up to Jump Man, Stick Pit continues the shredfest with its high-pitched sampling and non-stop guitar. 5/5
3.) The Ballad Of Buckethead- The "single" from the album, this is really more of a Les Claypool song. Whereas Les sits off to the side on most tracks such as Stick Pit, Revenge of the Double Man, and Nun Chuka Kata, his bass is clearly the centerpoint of this tune. The lyrics are excellent, the bass and drums booming, and Bucket's chilling guitar adds greatly to the song, although minimally- that is, until the solo kicks in. 5/5
4.) Sow Thistle- This song includes Bootsy talking over a loop, while Buckethead adds some creepy horror movie guitar. This is an example of Buckethead's techno side, with shredding of course. Not for everyone, definitely for me though. 5/5
5.) Revenge Of The Double Man- This song is one of my favorites on the record: Les and Brain hold the groove while Buckethead tears. PhonosycographDISK, also known as DJ Disc, adds a great scratch solo over the top of this tune. Buckethead then proceeds to rip his guitar in half (or so it sounds) on another amazing guitar solo. 5/5
6.) Night Of The Slunk- An acoustic, laid-back version of the groove from Jump Man. Buckethead then picks up the slack with some electric guitar, and really adds some interesting licks and solos amidst the acoustic setting. Out of nowhere come insane guitar patches, only to recede back into darkness to let the acoustic guitar shine through again. A wah-wah solo closes the tune. Quite a good track indeed. 5/5
7.) Who Me?- Up until now, the album has been pretty much going strong and running wild. Here, Buckethead slows things down with an acoustic interlude. However, gentle as it may be, menacing it remains, as in the background, there seems to be the sounds of something terrible happening...unless thats just Buckethead breathing through his mask. You be the judge. 5/5
8.) Jowls- My favorite song on here. Jowls is the best example of a great Buckethead song- Tremendous grooves, insane ripping, loops, horror-movie licks, and absolutely terrifying vocals and guitar patches. Can one ask for more from a Buckethead tune? 5/5
9.) The Shape Vs. Buckethead- Buckethead and Michael Myers face off- Double M with his giant blade, Bucket with his guitar pyrotechnics. Bootsy and Ovi Wey narrate the battle, and PhotosychographDISK adds sound effects. The winner?...listen to find out. 5/5
10.) Stun Operator- If you were on a rollercoaster from hell in Buckethead's theme park Bucketheadland, this song would be playing as gravity took you to your demise. Needless to say, a creepy and excellent song. 5/5
11.) Scapula- TechnoBucket. I'd list this under "songs that might not be for everyone" along with The Shape Vs. Bucket and Sow Thistle. This song includes a very dance floor-type guitar pattern, with soloing over the top of it. A great tune, and an excellent addition to the album. Still, a very strange Buckethead tune nonetheless. 5/5
12.) Nun Chuka Kata- There is only one way to end a Buckethead album, and that is to shred until there is nothing left to give. Nun Chuka Kata encapsulates what is left to give from Buckethead, as he serves it to us with a one-two punch. The album ends on a great note as Buckethead launches into a full-on solo that truly makes the album complete. 5/5
Yes, I realize I gave every song a perfect rating. But that is because they all contribute to, in my opinion, Buckethead's finest effort thus far. Although parts aren't for everyone, if you are truly a Bucket fan, you will definitely enjoy every second of music on here, like me. Beginners out there, buy this and Colma to start, and then make your call. Veteran fans, add this to your collection and make your Buckethead variety loads better. Skeptics, pick this up and prove yourselves wrong.

As of May 2005, it's been 10 years since Better than Ezra bounded up the charts with the unsinkable hit "Good," which is just about long enough for modern rock fans--especially the ones who picked up 2001's crummy Closer--to mentally file the band in a "moment has passed" category. With the release of Before the Robots, though, comes the need to reshuffle the played-out deck. The first single, a re-done "Lifetime," effectively rescues a really good story-song from potential oblivion by sending in an un-soupy acoustic guitar and Kevin Griffin's more inspired vocal; "A Southern Thang" tips a straw hat to the Louisiana swamps the band emerged from with a rip-it-up riff; and the aptly titled "Juicy" chugs along a funkified track that veers daringly close to disco. For a threesome on the brink of been-there-done-that, Before the Robots represents a bold but pleasingly poppy rebound. --Tammy La Gorce
Customer Reviews:
Great stuff!.......2007-03-22
I'm a huge fan of BTE and this is the best album they have put out yet. Kevin's lyrics are poetry and don't disappoint!
Great choice.......2007-02-01
I am a big fan of BTE, and this disk does not dissapoint. Songs are catchy and easy to get into.
BTE--The most amazing and under-rated band ever!.......2006-11-16
I am so disappointed that more people do not know how wonderful this band is. Each new album is creative and daring; the hooks never fail to give me goose bumps. The song writing and aranging is so powerful. I highly recommend this and all the BTE albums. I can't wait to see what the future holds for them.
Album of the Decade.......2006-09-07
The Cure had "Disintegration", BTE has "Before the Robots" as their masterpiece. If you ever had a broken heart...a crushing loss or a broken dream, then this is an album you can more likely relate to. But those songs are not presented in the gaudy, mope-y, whiney way like most bands on the radio are today. Instead, most of the songs have their own "rock-n-roll" groove and they will touch you and leave you with a sense of hope.
For most of the album, it's a lesson of what loss and longing in a song should sound like. The singing and lyrics are powerful...mainly because they are just honest and genuine. But at the same time, it's a modest album meant to instill an overall positive groove (sometimes with a funky beat!) It may seem like a catchy departure for some, but it is clever, heartfelt, and a fun album for those who can relate to it.
I rarely find an album where i will like every song on it (or even post a comment for)...and this is why has my vote for Album of the Decade, I wish i could give it 10 stars. If you see the live shows, you would change your mind about some of the songs you think you would dislike.
Better Than Ezra's Best Ever.......2006-08-18
"Before the Robots" is absolutely fabulous! Beginning to end, the songs rock with intelligent lyrics that hit home and groovy melodies. These guys are true storytellers. Tracks "Southern Thing", "Our Last Night" and "Laid" top my list. My "dessert island" CD has been Live's "Throwing Copper" for at least the last 10 years. "Before the Robots" is the only CD that has even come close to de-throning it.

Mellow take on the Lips........2007-03-24
This album is very interesting. I had been a skeptic of the string tributes for a long time. I'm a huge Flaming Lips fan, so when I found this for real cheap I picked it up. It is really quite soothing. Plus all the melodies are already familiar. Definately not an essential album but a nice one anyway.

Album Description
This is the Dallas band's sophomore release. Edgewater is best remembered from Marvel's "Punisher" movie soundtrack and from their debut "South Of Sideways" on Wind-Up Records, which sent them on a relentless North American tour in 2004 and 2005 with Three Days Grace, Finger Eleven, Seether, and Alter Bridge. Look for them on tour the rest of this year into 2007.

Edgewater Return.......2006-12-05
Although I found edgewater's first album, south of sideways, to be very boring and uninspired, my curious nature got the best of me and I had to hear We're Not Robots. The first thing I noticed was that everything seemed more focused. All the songs had a very formulaic structure, which certainly isn't a bad thing in rock music. Where South Of Sideways struggled to keep the listeners attention, We're Not Robots makes up for ten-fold, with urgent vocals and big sing-a-long chorus'. A year ago I would have told you that Edgewater were a boring and immature group of musicians, but after listening to We're Not Robots, I've changed my mind.
Some people have compared the style on Robots to that of an early Linkin Park. I say, what's wrong with that? Linkin Park have put out some of the most solid records in the rock music world. In any case, though, it'd be hard to draw much comparison to Linkin Park, aside from some well placed digital tracks and dreamy chorus'. Recommended.
Edgewater Aren't Giving Up Yet........2006-10-16
Edgewater's story is not one we haven't heard before. Little known rock band gets signed by major label, gets one single with moderate radio-play and a spot on a high profile soundtrack. The album fails to live up to the successes of it's peers, and the label forgets them like yesterday's news. Edgewater's triumphant follow-up to 2004's "South Of Sideways" is a biting 10-track album focused mainly on trashing the record business and the band is all the better for it. Sounding bolder than they did before, Edgewater spew their venom with focus and treat their frustrations and anger as a blessing. Despite the corny album title and theme, "We're Not Robots," the message is heard loud and clear.
Sounds Like: A band with a little more confidence.
The Good:
- They didn't give up where most bands would have faded.
- The style on the album doesn't veer far enough from the past to alienate fans.
The Bad:
- The production is a bit muddy.
- There are only 10 songs, adding up to just over a half-hour (what's with bands skimping on material these days?)
- The whole band vs. music industry cliche gets old midway through the album
Hits: "Get It Right" and "S.O.S." would be radio-hits given the chance.
Future: Edgewater seem bound and determined to stay in this business, despite low record sales. I don't see "We're Not Robots" being a massive hit, but it sure is a solid album that will win over anyone willing to listen.
Personally: I find this album to be more focused, even a bit more streamlined than "South Of Sideways." It's an easy listen, just a fun hard-rock album to pop in at any given moment.
Best Listened To When: Your record label drops you.
Dont listen to the haters.......2006-10-02
Wow is all I have to say about the second Egdewater release. My buddy introduced me to this band a few years back and I was like ehh these guys are just like seether, shinedown and all the other generic rock bands out there, nothing really stuck out at all to me. This album has it all, heavier guitar riffs, better drumming and the singer throws in some screams which really bring the emotions of the songs out and that is what made me fall in love with this cd. I am a huge fan of metalcore bands and screamo so this music is just a way to keep my roomate and others happy when they come over so I know they can at least listen to the music and not complain and this cd will definetly be a hit for awhile on the stereo. I had many people ask me at our parties who this band was and after showing them they bought it and love it just like me!!!
Nod Your Head.......2006-09-21
Edgewater is one of those bands who have extraordinary musicians who just can't seem to breakthrough and become fully mainstream. When South of Sideways came out I bought their CD based on their first single "Eyes Wired Shut" and I've absolutely loved them since. This album is a logical progression from South of Sideways touching on both the lightest and heavist spectrums that they showed us on their first album. Its my view that Matt Moseman is one of the best singers in rock and roll, and the rest of the musicians in the band are equally as talented. This album is far more emotional than the first, which is why I really fell for it. Buy it now.
It's too bad.........2006-09-11
I waited for Edgewater's sophomore debut with baited breath! I really thought they could top the wonderful mixture of songs on "South of Sideways"....didn't happen. I have to say I was really disappointed with this album.
At least in the first album the music flowed right along with the clear-as-a-bell lyrics, this album is full of screaming and herky-jerky riffs. It's almost as if they couldn't decide what sound they wanted, every song is a jumbled mess of chords. The album sounded like a mixture of Linkin Park and Jet. It's too bad, I hope their third offering is better.

Not for kids.......2007-04-14
I got this soundtrack and I have to say it's not all that. I thought it'd be the songs from the movie but no. My daughter loves the "Singin' In the Rain" part but it's not on the soundtrack.
Not only is the soundtrack incomplete, but there are songs that are totally inappropriate. This soundtrack is from a children's movie, aimed at children, and categorized by Amazon as CHILDREN'S MUSIC. Yes, there are things in life that we can't protect out children from. There are also things in life that we don't need to buy for our children - this is one of them. Save your money and buy the Lilo & Stitch soundtrack instead :D
Everything computer animated must be made by Pixar -.-.......2006-02-07
Hey Ohio mom this was made by Fox not Pixar/Disney
DO NOT BUY FOR YOUR KIDS!.......2005-12-26
I got the dvd soundtrack set and omg I will never let a kid hear the cd ever. with lines from the song right thurr by chingy on the cd!"Jeans saggin' so I can see her thong a l'il bit I know you grown a little bit, twenty years old, you legal" ok what is that doing on a kids cd?!?!?! oh it gets better he has 2 songs on the cd I like that: "Put ya hands up
Shake it fast on me
I'm that pimp you need
Ten G's in tha pocket and I'm ready to roll
I'm on fire like a rocket and I'm ready to blow" in the real song it says nigga not pimp do you want your kid singing that?!
Movie Music.......2005-11-03
I thought that the whole soundtrack was great. Blue Man Group was superb in last song. As for Ohio Mom's soundtrack, guess what, the world is full of things that will have an impact on children. The song is perfectly fine and maybe you should have looked at the cd before it was given to your little baby.
Not for my son!.......2005-10-18
My mother-in-law bought this soundtrack for my son who is 4 years old. We trusted that since this was a Disney/Pixar movie that the sound track would be appropriate for kids as the movie is geared towards children. However, there is a song on there by Chingy (who I not heard of until we heard this soundtrack) that is VERY sexualy suggestive. Here is one verse from the song.
I like the way you look in them pants, see ya fine (fine)
Lil momma a quarter piece, she far from a dime (dime)
The type of girl that'll getcha' up and go make you grind (grind)
I'm thinkin' about snatchin' her up, dirty, makin' her mine
Look at her hips, (what?) look at her legs, ain't she stacked? (stacked)
I sure wouldn't mind hittin' that from the back (back)
I like it when I touch it cuz she moan a l'il bit
Jeans saggin' so I can see her thong a l'il bit
I know you grown a little bit, twenty years old, you legal
Don't trip off my people, just hop in the regal
I swooped on her like an eagle swoopin' down on its prey
I know you popular, but you gon' be famous today
I am appalled that such a song would be on this soundtrack. If your children are older and you don't mind this kind of music I would recommend this CD as the rest of the songs are really good. However if your children are young and you don't wish for them to be exposed to this type of song I would STRONGLY NOT recommend this CD.

Where the hell are these guys from, anyway?.......2007-05-26
Usually, a cd at the dollar store means it's just bland, ________ radio rock that sounds as generic as... think of a generic object. Not this. It's a little bit too weird and sometimes dosen't sound musical, but some of the stuff is some of the coolest songs you will ever hear. There is a rapper, a singer (some chick named Tracey Amos), more singers, it sounds like what music in Mars would sound like. There are a couple of political or regular ideas buried in the songs, you have to listen to the lyrics. ON the surface, they sound like a hack horror band with nonsense. Not true, although sometimes, it's a little confusing.
IT's not the best album ever, it's not even great. Shop on amazon? Add it to another order along with Spawn.

The tragedy of the uncommons.......2003-07-15
I remember buying this back in the day, and thinking to myself: these guys will rule the world. It didn't work out that way. This debut album sold enough for TVT Records to put some more lavish production values into the (very good) follow-up "Spawn", but after that...static and silence.
And this is really just a horrible fate. Rise Robots Rise was a band *way* ahead of its time. You can listen to this CD today and you would have no clue it was originally released 11 years ago. The problem, as always, is how to categorize it? These days you can call anything "alternative" if it isn't Top-40, hip-hop, or country, so I guess you could call this alternative. But that doesn't tell you anything.
What this music is is *intricate*. It is one of the only contemporary music albums I have heard where I was fairly sure that the band knew what every track was doing and why it was there, and there are many, many tracks, and they are all different and they all need to be there. If you have heard anything from this album, it is probably "If I only knew", which was the single that got some airplay, and then the ultimate back-handed compliment from the establishment: Tom Jones covered the sucker. No, I'm not making this up. That act itself was something like a Kiki andHerb act of bizarreness and did not really help Jones "update" his image, but I still wonder who it was who realized what a work of genius that song was and somehow convinced Tom Jones to give it a whirl.
It's a strange world.

really a pity..........2003-06-03
...that this group came up with this album when they did as they were a little too soon for the masses. their ingenuity and fusion of different music styles are the stuff that have made groups such as morcheeba and gus gus the successes they are. the rise robots rise sound, which is catchy and infectious, should appeal to a wide variety of people with its originality, unlike what we all know, that commercialized overproduced pop music isn't original, right?
