As the lead singer of New Grass Revival, über tenor John Cowan always brought an urgency and bold authority to the experimental form his bandmates forged out of bluegrass. So it's no surprise that his versatility carried over to his next ventures, blue-eyed soul and prog-rock, or to his current eponymously named acoustic ensemble, where he's joined by Jeff Autry (guitar), Wayne Benson (mandolin), Shad Cobb (fiddle), and Noam Pikelny (banjo). Their kick-off tune, "Carla's Got a New Tattoo," in which a locomotive rhythm propels Bob Lucas's cheeky lyrics about the cool of body art, recalls the legendary New Grass at their zenith. But the band quickly switches gears to the dark blues of "Misery and Happiness," in which Cowan, powering down his force-of-nature voice to make room for ghostly harmony by Patty Griffin, stunningly evokes the searing pain of redemptive love gone cold. The highlights here are many, and a lot of them bear the stamp of Cowan's friend Darrell Scott, beginning with the spiritual "6 Red Birds (In a Joshua Tree)," which Cowan and Scott wrote together, and segueing to "With a Memory Like Mine," an exquisite song of the crazy-making grief of war (written by Scott and his father, Wayne). But the collaboration that will long stick in the mind is "Drown," a harrowing story song of child molestation. Cowan and Scott (who contributes plaintive piano accompaniment) wrote it together, but it's Cowan's own story of violation, and it's one of the bravest songs of the year. All in all, this is a sterling collection of unusually fine material, delivered in Cowan's trademark ice-and-electricity vocals. --Alanna Nash

The Songs: "Carla's Got A New Tattoo" opens the set with barn-burning instrumental work and inspired vocal spunk. The soulful "Misery & Happiness," a lamentation on the bittersweet experience of finding love and losing it, features gorgeous harmony vocals from Patty Griffin. "Working In The New Mine" harkens back to old school bluegrass, with a driving tempo, stellar picking, charged modulation, and acrobatic vocal harmonies. A melodic "Back To Your Arms" and Mark Simos' "Hurting Sure" are modern country masterpieces that would sound right at home on country radio. "In Bristol Town" is a ballad with some old-time Appalachian character. The 6-minute closing track, "Drown," is the most emotional and controversial. It's a disturbing and detailed disclosure about child molestation. Based on personal experience as a seven-year-old survivor, John felt it was a tragic story that needed to be told. Cowan collaborated with Darrell Scott on "Drown" and "Red Birds (In A Joshua Tree)." Darrel and his father (Wayne) penned "With A Memory Like Mine," a sad song of a son returning frm war in a flag-draped casket.
The Musicians: Besides Cow on lead vocals and bass, the band's current lineup is Jeff Autry (guitar, bouzouki), Wayne Benson, (mandolin), Shad Cobb (fiddle), Noam Pikelny (banjo), and Luke Bulla (fiddle, mandolin). All but Pikelny contribute harmony vocals.
Of Special Note: Six guests who are "special" offer up vocals (Patty Griffin), piano (Darrell Scott), cello (Bryn Bright), bass harmonica (Mickey Raphael), percussion (Giles Reaves), and "sonic onslaught" (Jay Joyce).
Any Recommendations: The studio effects are a little overstated in a few places. Sound effects, echo, reverb and looping sounds have their place, and producer Jay Joyce could've used them a bit more sparingly to create certain intimate moods and soul-stirring settings.

I like the return to a little more acoustic sound than on the previous John Cowan CD "Always Take Me Back." That one had some superb novelties, like the Yes and King Crimson covers, but it lacked cohesion, and the original songs were not as good as on John's debut. This one is closer to the New Grass Revival vibe with strong songs throughout and some expert instrumental passages, too. John's cover of The Blue Nile (Tomorrow Morning) is a wonderful choice, and it sheds light on the underrated songwriting of Paul Buchanan. With Sam Bush's recent album "Laps In Seven" also sounding great, these are good times for New Grass Revival fans.

First and foremost, John Cowan's resonating tenor voice would send shock waves through a polar ice cap. The hair on my arms stood up the entire concert. The way the album is mastered, it's one long continuous medley that's over far too quickly. The arrangements are laid out in an order that flows like a river. John mixes styles on this recording that range from blues to southern rock to Celtic soul in a most indelible piece of work. Cow band rocks on this, especially fiddler Shad Cob and mandolinist Wayne Benson. Didn't think it was possible for JC to improve, but he continues to outpace himself. One for the collector's list and posterity. Tattoo transfer was a really cool bonus!

Best work by Cowan yet. No let down from start to finish though the last song "Drown", which deals with the reality of child molestation, seems out of place for this particular album. Regardless, it's an excellent mix and masterful production. Certain enjoyment for any newgrass fan.

Bought it 2 weeks ago on release date and have been listening to it every day since. Still not tired of it. The music is a large heaping dollop of bluegrass (excuse me New Grass)a dash of country with a pinch of southern rock, a bit of gospel, and a little mountain music tossed in, served up with a serious jolt of reality (referencing last cut "Drown").This group is in unison with one another and this Cd reflects their individual awsome talents especially John Cowans incredible vocals. That man can belt a tune in any category from rock to country and everything in between.

Almost lame.............2007-07-04
Honestly this is the third worst release from the Crue - after Generation Swine and Theatre of Pain. But there are some tracks that are decent such as White Punks on Dope (cover song go figure), Fake and New Tattoo are decent catchy Crue tracks. Castillo does an adequate job (God rest his soul) and Mars is his typical high standard guitar playing. Sixx on the other hand f'd up the lyrics throughout this release. Neil - well he sounds good and that is about it.
A return to form.......2006-01-26
Motley Crue, arguably the biggest pop-metal band of the 1980s, had a tough time in the 1990s. First there was the falling out and ensuing feud between vocalist Vince Neil and the rest of the band. Then there were the alternative and grunge moments that made the Crue's style of music passé. The Crue responded to the public's change in taste by releasing the grunge-sounding "Motley Crue" (1994) album with vocalist John Corabi that was a huge bomb. Then, despite Neil's return to the band, there was another flop with the faux industrial/alt.rock-esque "Generation Swine" (1997). All the while internal problems persisted. Unable to get along, drummer Tommy Lee and Neil almost killed each other at an Airport in the late 90s. Frustrated with both Neil and the band's audience for not liking the Crue's attempts to modernize, Lee quit the group in the summer of '99 to form the Nu-Metal outfit Methods of Mayhem. The final blow came when the Crue left their record label Electra, although they did receive the complete rights to their master-tapes, so they could re-release and repackage their back-catalogue as they saw fit.
Despite a decade that didn't treat them too kindly, at the dawn of the new millennium, the Crue soldiered on. The first task at hand was finding a new drummer. Randy Castillo, formally of Ozzy Osbourne's band, was tapped to replace Tommy Lee. With a new drummer, a new label, and a fresh perspective, Nikki Sixx, (bass) Mick Mars, (guitar) Vince Neil, (vocals) and Randy Castillo (drums) went into the studio in the spring of 2000 to record their eighth studio album.
For Motley Crue's self-titled album and "Generation Swine," the band tried to modernize. While some fans appreciated the Crue's more modern, updated sound (I personally feel that the self-titled album is the Crue's finest work) the public didn't bite. Fans of old-school 80s rock hated anything that wasn't about T and A, and why would a younger audience want to listen to an 80s rock band try to sound like music of their generation?
For their new album, the Crue decided to return to their roots and make an old-school, 80s sunset-strip, pop-metal album. In order to make an 80s style album, Guns N' Roses producer Mike Clint was brought on board. Assisting main songwriter and Crue leader Nikki Sixx in writing the songs was the unknown James Michael. After a few months in the studio, the Crue unleashed "New Tattoo" in the summer of 2000.
Fans are mixed on "New Tattoo." Some feel that it's the band's best work since "Dr. Feelgood" and a return to the sound of classic Crue after years of trend-hopping. Others, however, feel that it's a half-baked attempt to go back in time, or rehash a style where the well of creativity has long since run dry. To be sure, "New Tattoo" definitely sounds like old-school Crue. It actually sounds as though it could have come out around 1988, between "Girls, Girls, Girls" (1987) and "Dr. Feelgood" (1989).
While I don't love this album, I like it a lot. It has a lot going for it. For one thing, the band sounds great. "Theatre of Pain" (1985) and "Girls, Girls, Girls" may have had well-written songs, but the band was so smacked out of its mind on coke, heroin and booze, the quality of the music suffered. On "New Tattoo," the music is done in a similar pop-metal vein (melodic with a sing along chorus) only now the band sounds focused, and the performance is top-notch. Vince Neil gives the best vocal performance of his career with the title-track and sounds great throughout the entire album. Mick Mars's playing is also great, as his soloing has never sounded better and is pure ear candy. Similarly, Sixx and Castillo offer a solid rhythm section, thus making the band sound tight from start to finish.
"New Tattoo" is not as complex or ambitious as "Motley Crue" or "Generation Swine." It's a back-to-basics type of album, which is fine, as the album is generally very well written. There are a couple of weak songs, like the okay-but-not-great opening (and first single) "Hell on High Heals," and "Punched in the Teeth by Love," which sound like clichéd, by-the-numbers hair-metal. The rest of the album, however, is quite strong. The songs are generally fast-paced hard-rockers, that have good hooks and strong melodies that should definitely please fans of the pop-metal genre. The obligatory ballads, "New Tattoo," and "Hollywood Ending" are far less generic than most of its type, and show maturity, without loosing its edge.
The album's biggest flaw, however, are the lyrics. The Crue's lyrics (especially "Theatre of Pain" thought "Dr. Feelgood") have always been somewhat cheesy, but they're especially bad here, as titles such as "Treat Me like the Dog that I am" and "She Needs Rock N' Roll" would suggest. And while the Crue's lyrics in the past were somewhat cheesy, they were still edgy, and the Crue's members were young, and it was in the 80s, so the band gets a pass for past offensives. But in 2000, a middle-aged Crue has no excuse and the band just sounds goofy. Still, the cheesy lyrics don't ruin the album, as the band's top-notch performance and mostly solid collection of songs are more than enough to make this a strong release.
If you are a fan of Motley Crue or 80s-style hard-rock in general, you will probably get something out of this album. Despite a few bad songs and poor lyrical content, it's still a solid album. On a sad note, Randy Castillo succumbed to cancer and died a few years after the release of "New Tattoo."
QUIT COMPLAINING ABOUT IT...ITS THE CRUE!!!!!.......2005-08-05
I don't see why every one is bashing New Tattoo! People complained about Crue '94 and Generation Swine because it was too much of a departure from the Shout, Girls and Feelgood style. Everybody bitched, everybody pissed and everybody moaned . So...Nikki and the boyz decide to release a good 'ol fashioned Crue album to satisfy all these "hair rockers" that are now Losing their hair or aging very ungracefully by the time of it's release. What they gave us is a Motley Crue record. In the same style of those mentioned previously. It has all all the trimmin's!!!! Arena anthems, ballads and just plain ol raunch and roll. For this recording, Tommy Lee stepped aside to focus on Methods of Meyhem (another EXCELLENT attempt for what it is...) and former Ozzy drummer Randy Castillo joined the Crue, pounding away like clockwork. Songs like hell on High Heels, Treat Me Like the Dog I Am, New Tattoo, Punched In The Teeth By Love are perfect Motley Crue songs. Catchy, sleezy, melodic Crue songs to suit the taste buds of any Crue fan. See, what happened is this album came out as metal changed. Gone were the 80's style metal that we all know and love dearly. I am a fan of each and all genres of all eras, and New Tattoo gets a 4 out of 5 for me. Why not 5? Well, while it's a decent release, it's not a very stong one. The 4 is for the good tunes and for an EXCELLENT cover of the Tubes', White Punks On Dope! The other thing that makes this a very strong 4 is the sound quality! A crystal clear engineering job well done...if only the first 4 could have been recorded like this...! To Mr. Randy Castillo, thanks for giving us one more round of skin pounding before making you way to rock and roll Heaven. R.I.P brother...we'll NEVER forget you!

NEW TATTOO(2000).Motley Crue's eigth(studio)album.
By the year 2000,Motley Crue had seen and done it all. They had accidently killed their best friends in car accidents,they had beatun up their wifes and gotten arrested and charged with spousal abuse--you name it,and there is a good chance that either Vince Neil,Nikki Sixx,Tommy Lee,and/or Mick Mars had done it. And a year before the twenty-first century arrived,The Crue released a new studio album in the summer of 2000. How did the album meausure up? Read on for my review of this:
This album,along with THEATRE OF PAIN,MC '94,and GENERATION SWINE,is a "love it or hate it" album. I'd also say that it is easily the worst album Motley Crue has EVER released. And while Nikki Sixx usually contributes most of the work to Motley Crue albums,the Crue member who probably did most of the work here is drummer Randy Castillo(RIP)who had been hired as Motley Crue's replacement drummer after Tommy Lee had quit the band to do his Methods of Mayhem project. Castillo was a good drummer(he died from complications of cancer in 2002)and when a replacement member of a band deserves the most credit for the first album the band that hired him for and had recorded with him,you know that's not a good sign.The only good tracks on here(whether or not I like the title track depends on the mood I am in while listening to it)are the opener HELL ON HIGH HEELS,FAKE,and their cover of The Tubes' WHITE PUNKS ON DOPE(it is one of their best cover songs)--everything else here is just really bad. And while the lyrics are quite stupid also,how many agree with me that the dialogue on TREAT ME LIKE THE DOG I AM and PORNO STAR is annoying? Apart from the good songs on this CD,the songs here just sound unispired and are all quite stupid-I wouldn't say that Motley Crue was exactly returning to their original sound on this album. Them returning to their original sound shows at times during this record,but with this CD,after listening to it,it may seem a little apparent that Vince Neil,Nikki Sixx,and Mick Mars wanted half of this album to sound like their original material(DR. FEELGOOD,GIRLS,GIRLS,GIRLS,etc.)while they wanted half of it to sound like the kind of rock music that was popular back in 2000-they didn't want us to think that,but guess what--we caught what they were hoping we wouldn't be able to tell after their fans had listened to this record.
Overall,a dreadful CD that could have been and should have been totally better--Vince Neil,Nikki Sixx,and Mick Mars should have put more effort into this CD then they really did. And here is the bottom line:get their new two disc greatest hits set RED,WHITE,AND CRUE--that way,you will get HELL ON HIGH HEELS and the single version of the title track off of this album,and then download the other two good tracks on this album(the tracks that I mentioned at the top of this review,and the bonus tracks here--if you want them)and then skip the rest. Now that Tommy Lee is back with the band,hopefully Vince Neil,Nikki Sixx,and Mick Mars will make a new,decent studio album that WILL sound more like DR. FEELGOOD,GIRLS,GIRLS,GIRLS,etc.(I always found MC '94 to be underappreciated--I liked GENERATION SWINE,but I can see why some(or most)Crue fans don't care for it). Enough said--although I am looking forward for seeing The Crue in concert one month from now).
crue definetly back with classic sound.......2005-06-10
If you like old motley crue you will like this one. It is super catchy, nice guiter parts, and just a feel great rock record, that doesn't try to make some big social comment or take itself too seriously. It just goes out and rocks.

Forget about everything else Motley Crüe has released in the 1990s--their self-titled 1994 release and its follow-up, Generation Swine, are embarrassments. Instead, wrap your ears around New Tattoo. This is what this band has always been all about: riffs, hooks, sass, raunch, and hair. Except for the fact that they're older and have replaced Tommy Lee with Randy Castillo, going by the band photos in the CD booklet, this could be 1989. True, the Crüe also seem to have gained at least a little wisdom--the prostitute in "Hell on High Heels" has HIV, fame clearly has its downside in "Fake," and instead of indulging in "Girls, Girls, Girls," the boys have evidently discovered the joys of safe cyber-sex in "Porno Star." On the other hand, the title track is a love song; they evidently miss the old days so much that they're willing to go to outer space for the chance to have that much fun again ("1st Band on the Moon"); and their romances are as problematic as ever ("Hollywood Ending," "Punched in the Teeth by Love"). With New Tattoo, the Crüe have recaptured the essence of what made them superstars. Whether that'll happen again is open to question, but it's still a good argument for sticking to what you're good at. --Genevieve Williams

Vince Neil gives the best vocal performance of his career with the title-track and sounds great throughout the entire album. Mick Mars's playing is also great, as his soloing has never sounded better and is pure ear candy. Similarly, Sixx and Castillo offer a solid rhythm section, thus making the band sound tight from start to finish.
"New Tattoo" is not as complex or ambitious as "Motley Crue" or "Generation Swine." It's a back-to-basics type of album, which is fine, as the album is generally very well written. There are a couple of weak songs, like the okay-but-not-great opening (and first single) "Hell on High Heals," and "Punched in the Teeth by Love," which sound like clichéd, by-the-numbers hair-metal. The rest of the album, however, is quite strong. The songs are generally fast-paced hard-rockers, that have good hooks and strong melodies that should definitely please fans of the pop-metal genre. The obligatory ballads, "New Tattoo," and "Hollywood Ending" are far less generic than most of its type, and show maturity, without loosing its edge.
The album's biggest flaw, however, are the lyrics. The Crue's lyrics (especially "Theatre of Pain" thought "Dr. Feelgood") have always been somewhat cheesy, but they're especially bad here, as titles such as "Treat Me like the Dog that I am" and "She Needs Rock N' Roll" would suggest. And while the Crue's lyrics in the past were somewhat cheesy, they were still edgy, and the Crue's members were young, and it was in the 80s, so the band gets a pass for past offensives. But in 2000, a middle-aged Crue has no excuse and the band just sounds goofy. Still, the cheesy lyrics don't ruin the album, as the band's top-notch performance and mostly solid collection of songs are more than enough to make this a strong release.
If you are a fan of Motley Crue or 80s-style hard-rock in general, you will probably get something out of this album. Despite a few bad songs and poor lyrical content, it's still a solid album. On a sad note, Randy Castillo succumbed to cancer and died a few years after the release of "New Tattoo."

I cant believe it when I hear people ragging on this album. This is easily their best work of the 90's. As for the 80's; it's better than Theatre, it's better than Girls, it's as good as Feelgood...New Tattoo is one of their best. It's not over produced like Dr. Feelgood either: how many Vince Neil's do you really need singing over the top of each other?

Decent 2000 effort,the Crue's eighth album.Drummer Tommy Lee is replaced here with veteran skinsman Randy Castillo(Ozzy,Lita Ford-R.I.P.).Thought this release was rather comparable with 'Dr.Feelgood',but a tad BETTER.Mostly because the guys make a full effort to return to their rock&sleaze roots.Best tracks include "Hell On High Heels","She Needs Rock&Roll","Punched In The Teeth With Love" and their unlikely cover of The Tube's "White Punks On Dope".Do check this one out.
I Never Expected.......2005-08-06
What a cool CD. i never thought it would actually be good. i only bought it because it was $5 at my local place. i got it for kicks and it was really better than i had expected. It still wasn't great but it was pretty cool. some songs were really meaninless and terrible lyrics such as Porno Star but some really showed the more mature side of the crue. some songs also showed the importance of their comeback.
oh and by the way.....WHERE THE HELL IS TOMMY LEE YOU F***S!???

The Crue is Back...well, in spirit anyway.......2005-03-14
When the Grunge movement (blech!) came about many of the 80's era bands felt they had to change their sound to keep up with the times. The Crue was no exception. In the 90's they released "Motley Crue" with John Corabi on vocals, and "Generation Swine". The self-titled album is good, and technically Corabi is much better than Vince Neil, but it does not sound like the Crue. "Swine" just flat out sucks. Like many other artists who try to change their sound to suit the popular trend, the Crue ended up with a flat, uninspired album that fooled no one.
New Tattoo is a return of the Spirit of the real Motley Crue. Even with Tommy Lee missing the band was able to recapture the obnoxious, rebellious, hell-raising, fun music that makes the Crue who they are. This is what Rock-N-Roll is supposed to sound like.
Personally, I find much of today's "rock" music to be depressing, hopeless, bleak and generally not much fun. If you like the sound of a distorted, loud guitar, but have no interest in listening to some loser whine about how miserable life is, then this album is for you. I guarantee you will have a fist in the air and singing aloud in your car in no time.

Very Good To Memorable Recordings of Bernstein's American Composer Recordings.......2007-07-01
This is yet another superb box set of Bernstein's Deutsche Grammophon recordings, emphasizing his strong affinity and interest in the work of such great American composers like Charles Ives, Aaron Copland and William Schuman. The best recordings are those with The New York Philharmonic of Charles Ives's orchestral works and Aaron Copland's Third Symphony, "Quiet City" suite for horn and strings, and the El Salon de Mexico ballet suite. But I also admire Bernstein's recordings with the Los Angeles Philharmonic of Gershwin's great classical/jazz orchestral works like "Rhapsody in Blue" and "An American in Paris", and the recordings of several other Copland scores, most notably, "Appalachian Spring". Like virtually all of the other recordings in Deutsche Grammophon's "Collector's Edition" series of Leonard Bernstein, these were recorded by Deutsche Grammophon in the 1980s, often during live concert performances held in Los Angeles, Tel Aviv, and New York City (Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall). While some may prefer Bernstein's classic recordings of Copland and Ives for CBS Masterworks (now Sony) in the late 1950s and 1960s, these have the benefit of being digital recordings made by Deutsche Grammophon's then state-0f-the-art recording processes. Without question, anyone who is a fan of Copland's, Gershwin's or Ives' scores and of Leonard Bernstein will surely cherish this fine 6 CD box set.

Multi-talented avant-garde composer Amy Denio quilts together a dizzying array of sampled sounds: bird calls, construction sites, water slapping, accordion, spoken words, dancers' footsteps and other found sound for this suite created for the Pat Graney Dance Company of New York in 2000. "Tattoo" is the third and final movement in a series of performances that include "Faith" (1991) and "Sleep" (1995).
The lines between performer, performance, and accompaniment are blurred and sometimes completely discarded -- "Skirts," for example, samples and layers the swishing of the dancers' skirts as they move through their steps.
"Tattoo" is an excellent example of the limitless canvas of music. Instead of painting herself into a corner with conventionality, Denio sculpts and collages the commonplace into intriguing new sounds.

Motley Crue, arguably the biggest pop-metal band of the 1980s, had a tough time in the 1990s. First there was the falling out and ensuing feud between vocalist Vince Neil and the rest of the band. Then there were the alternative and grunge moments that made the Crue's style of music passé. The Crue responded to the public's change in taste by releasing the grunge-sounding "Motley Crue" (1994) album with vocalist John Corabi that was a huge bomb. Then, despite Neil's return to the band, there was another flop with the faux industrial/alt.rock-esque "Generation Swine" (1997). All the while internal problems persisted. Unable to get along, drummer Tommy Lee and Neil almost killed each other at an Airport in the late 90s. Frustrated with both Neil and the band's audience for not liking the Crue's attempts to modernize, Lee quit the group in the summer of '99 to form the Nu-Metal outfit Methods of Mayhem. The final blow came when the Crue left their record label Electra, although they did receive the complete rights to their master-tapes, so they could re-release and repackage their back-catalogue as they saw fit.
Despite a decade that didn't treat them too kindly, at the dawn of the new millennium, the Crue soldiered on. The first task at hand was finding a new drummer. Randy Castillo, formally of Ozzy Osbourne's band, was tapped to replace Tommy Lee. With a new drummer, a new label, and a fresh perspective, Nikki Sixx, (bass) Mick Mars, (guitar) Vince Neil, (vocals) and Randy Castillo (drums) went into the studio in the spring of 2000 to record their eighth studio album.
For Motley Crue's self-titled album and "Generation Swine," the band tried to modernize. While some fans appreciated the Crue's more modern, updated sound (I personally feel that the self-titled album is the Crue's finest work) the public didn't bite. Fans of old-school 80s rock hated anything that wasn't about T and A, and why would a younger audience want to listen to an 80s rock band try to sound like music of their generation?
For their new album, the Crue decided to return to their roots and make an old-school, 80s sunset-strip, pop-metal album. In order to make an 80s style album, Guns N' Roses producer Mike Clint was brought on board. Assisting main songwriter and Crue leader Nikki Sixx in writing the songs was the unknown James Michael. After a few months in the studio, the Crue unleashed "New Tattoo" in the summer of 2000.
Fans are mixed on "New Tattoo." Some feel that it's the band's best work since "Dr. Feelgood" and a return to the sound of classic Crue after years of trend-hopping. Others, however, feel that it's a half-baked attempt to go back in time, or rehash a style where the well of creativity has long since run dry. To be sure, "New Tattoo" definitely sounds like old-school Crue. It actually sounds as though it could have come out around 1988, between "Girls, Girls, Girls" (1987) and "Dr. Feelgood" (1989).
While I don't love this album, I like it a lot. It has a lot going for it. For one thing, the band sounds great. "Theatre of Pain" (1985) and "Girls, Girls, Girls" may have had well-written songs, but the band was so smacked out of its mind on coke, heroin and booze, the quality of the music suffered. On "New Tattoo," the music is done in a similar pop-metal vein (melodic with a sing along chorus) only now the band sounds focused, and the performance is top-notch. This cd didn't get my full attention when it first came out. I was kinda saying "ehhh" for a while but the more I listened to it, the more it grew on me! There's not one bad song on this CD! Randy Castillo (RIP) was the best drummer they could have gotten to replace Tommy. I think he brought a new vibe and sound to the band to some degree. He will be missed by many :(
"Timebomb" is a great song and I'm not sure why it didn't make it on this cd when it was first released? There is another song called "American Zero" that was also supposed to be on the cd and for whatever reason, they didn't use it and it is a GREAT song! Very "Dr. Feelgood" sound to it.
I've always been a Crue freak so I may be somewhat biased on this review. But this is definitely a must for any rock & roll fan!!! Great cd!!!
A real Crue album at last!.......2000-08-23
The Crue is my favorite band ever. They veered away some from their original sound with the previous two releases, but with New Tattoo they are back with full force.
There is not one bad song in this CD. Vince's voice is better than ever and Mick's guitars sound like guitars again... if you've heard the previous two albums you know what I'm talking about... it's back to rock'n roll, sleazy guitars and witty lyrics.
Time Bomb, the extra track, is a good song, though not the best. Still, I don't know why it never got included on the US release; it was available for download at Motley's website for a while.
