After more than 50 years as a performer, Mose Allison is nothing if not a known commodity. His voice is thin and nasal, his piano playing is swingin' but not spellbinding. A gift for songwriting is what sets Allison apart--his sardonic lyrics are often filled with hilarious wit and acrobatic wordplay, and his arrangements are a vibrant mix of jumpin' jazz and urbane R&B. Recorded live at London's Pizza Express, the 17 songs here are culled from the breadth of Allison's illustrious career, with a few Ellington covers ("Lucky So and So," "Do Nothing Till You Hear from Me") and the blues classic "Baby Please Don't Go" added for good measure. The band is right with Allison throughout, with guitarist Jim Mullen prominently featured. Adeptly capturing Allison at his best, Live in London, Vol. 2 is certainly one for the fans, but it's not a bad place to start either. --Tad Hendrickson

5 out of 5 stars Amazin' Mose.......2007-03-28

This is the 2nd Vol of a 2 volume set of "must have Mose". If you are a fan of Mose Allison these 2 cds should be part of your collection. Due to technology limitations there aren't a great deal of Mose's performance available on cd - this captures Mose lively and loose.

5 out of 5 stars Does justice to his live shows!.......2002-03-07

I'll keep it short and sweet...if you dig Mose Allison, you already have musical taste far superior to most humans. This volume is just as good as Volume 1, the sound is incredible, his voice is timeless, the song selection almost identical to the Mose shows I saw in '99, '00, and '01. Do not be fooled by the lousy samples provided by Amazon.com (they all seem to start at the guitar solo). This album will not disappoint you!

4 out of 5 stars Better than Volume One - but still not five stars........2002-01-08

Some nine months after Volume One became available comes Volume Two. Blue Note use the same basic sleeve cover (different colours and a different outside sleeve photograph - but essentially the same sleeve notes by Ben Sidran) but don't point out, other than including his name, that guitarist Jim Mullen augmented the basic trio for these tracks. The presence of Mullen overcomes the criticism that I had of the first volume that many of the track selections sounded "samey". There are longer and fewer tracks than on its predecessor. At times, perhaps, it can be argued that the guitarist makes too much use of what sounds like a phaser. There are interesting versions of some old favourites, "Your mind's on vacation" gets a makeover and there is a good version of "Do nothing 'til you hear from me"."City home" is another track that benefits from a reappraissal. Of the non-Allison songs Duke Ellington's "Lucky so and so" works well.I still think that editors Ben Sidran and Dan Geocaris could have included a lot more of the banter that makes Allison "live" such an exciting prospect, there were entertaining episodes that would have worked well if they'd been included. A better album than Volume One, but still not as engaging as one might have hoped from an artist well honed in the art of total entertainment.

On this first volume of The Mose Chronicles, singer-songwriter and pianist Mose Allison brings his idiosyncratic brand of southern comfort to London for this well-cheered live session. Flanked by a crowd that wholeheartedly embraces both his sardonic drollery and the supple rhythm section of bassist Roy Babbington and drummer Mark Taylor, Allison is in top form in this enthralling program that's characteristically wry and full of sharp wisdom. Mose is always divinely swinging, too, leveraging the hundreds of gigs he's played with this trio. Plain-folk advice marks the jumping "No Trouble Livin'," just as poetic social commentary rivets the sly "Everybody's Cryin' Mercy" and the joyfully apocalyptic "Ever Since the World Ended." Straight-ahead balladry comes to the fore on "Meet Me at No Special Place," an early favorite of Nat King Cole's trio. Allison's punchy piano style is as effervescent throughout the Chronicles as his singing is backwoods, and it makes for great listening. --John Murph

5 out of 5 stars Addendum to my review.......2001-12-30

In response to the reviewer who expressed dislike for the similarity of the songs: With a live trio format, you get to hear the style of the players. The keys in which the songs are played are the choice of the vocalist. In this case, you're hearing the style of Mose. This is how he plays, and this is what it sounds like. As to the repertoire, the question for me is not: why did he pick these songs that sound alike? Rather, the question is: Is this what a writer and player like Mose wants to play for a live set when he's on the road in his 70's?
The answer: Yep. The man plays what he wants to. That's his red wagon, and I'm glad to hear what he has to say.

5 out of 5 stars Intimate, intelligent. The best Mose........2001-12-29

Through decades, wives, Vietnam, 12 steps, and all, Mose Allison has been the one constant in my life. And this recording, produced by Ben Sidran, is warm and close. This is a trio setting, with an appreciative audience. Really, it's like they've never heard the lyric before and laugh at the appropriate spots. Not at all a sit-on-your-hands kind of show. It's a great trio, and Mose is on his game, as the very professional musician he is. A really rare collection from a unique writer and player. Great. Just great.

4 out of 5 stars Live, and a great performance.....but!!!.......2001-03-15

There's no denying that this is another strong performance by Mose Allison, but..... My reservations have nothing to do with the Mose's performance of the material that he's chosen, nor of the other two players Roy Babbington on Bass and and Mark Taylor on Drums, who are as tight and supportive as any group that plays together so much ought to be. My reservations are about the choice of material which delves deep into his huge repetoire, but at times comes across in the programming as very "samey". Quite a lot of the tunes are played at a similar tempo, which over 22 tracks tends to grate. The other criticism that I have, having been to a number of the Pizza Express shows in London, is that there is altogether too few of the asides and stories that Mose interjects, which makes the live performances so vibrant. Here, Ben Sidran the producer has chosen to limit this to the odd "this was written by", rather than attempting to make it really representative of the delightful nature of the intimate shows that he hosts at the venue.Perhaps any volume 2 will rectify this. Live and a great performance...but!

5 out of 5 stars Hawkwind - 'Live Chronicles' (Griffin) 2-CD.......2005-02-09

I was so delighted when I first discovered this title was reissued, and expanded onto a 2-CD release box set, mind you.I originally had a copy of this title on an aging cassette that might still exist in one piece. Most of the 29 tracks here are from the band's 1981-86 era.Several of their '70's gems show up here, like "Master Of The Universe","Magnu","Assault And Battery","Quark,Strangeness And Charm" and the recital-turned-song "Spirit Of The Age".Occasional poet/recitalist Michael Moorcock shows up on three cuts,"Chronicle Of The Black Sword","Dead Homecoming" and "The Final Flight".Wanted to mention the incredible instrumental "Shade Gate".Most,if not all of the vocals through out the show look to be done by guitarist Dave Brock and synth/keyboardist Harvey Bainbridge. They show off some great harmonies on "Lords Of Chaos" and "Horn Of Fate".Also,Bainbridge supplies some nice keys on tunes "Sleep Of A Thousand Years","Choose Your Masques","Zarozina" and "Dragon Years".I know that 'Live Chronicles' was previously put out on Castle Import as a single CD pressing. This release is much better.Top notch British progressive space rock that shows NO compromise.Essential for ALL Hawkwind fans.

      5 out of 5 stars Hawkwind's best.......2001-10-02

Without a doubt, this is Hawkwind's best album. But it is not just for Hawkwind fans. This is one of the best hardrock albums (live or studio) that I have ever heard. Lloyd-Langton's guitar playing is awesome. The heavy riffs that dominate the best Hawkwind songs are very prevalant, mostly guitar. Worth every penny if you can find it.

5 out of 5 stars the best live hawkwind!.......1998-09-17

For SF and Fantasy literature fans, this album chronicles the history of Elric of Melnibone, the protagonist of Michael Moorcock's series of the same name. Having abandoned the surreal sonic miasma which confounded the first decade of their recordings in favor of a cleaned-up guitar sound, this is possibly the best Hawkwind ever. Be sure to read the excellent books to understand the lyrics!

4 out of 5 stars masters of the universe.......2001-05-03

This is an excellent cd. No hype . Tunes like needle gun , masters of the universe, crank it up. i have a cassette and just let it play back to back. to back . It rocks and rocks . Still they play and play well: i wish I could find the lyrics cause this has tunes and images that are worth exploring further. From 72 to 01 still playing and playing very well.

3 out of 5 stars Some good music, but Moorcock is annoying..........2001-04-14

First let me say that I have never particularly liked Hawkwind as a fantasy-rock band. I much prefer them as a space-rock band. Since this is a fantasy themed album it sort of rubs me the wrong way, but if you like cheesy sword-weilding dungeons-and-dragons type fantasy then this is the album for you. The songs are taken from throughout Hawkwind history to date (1986 when the album was recorded), but omitting anything Calvert originally sang. Harvey Bainbridge's synths and Huw Lloyd-Langton's lead guitar are constantly in the foreground, transforming older songs like "Master of the Universe" so that they fit right in with the '80s Hawkwind songs. This album also includes one song, "Moonglum (Friend Without A Cause)", which is absolutely brilliant, yet has not appeared as a studio recording on any Hawkwind album. It sounds great live though, and is the one true reason why this album is a must have for Hawkwind fans. I never get tired of hearing that song! In contrast, I never get used to Michael Moorcock's innane rantings about Elric and the black sword, which seem to happen between every song! The quality of music is generally quite good though, and like I said, you have to buy this album for "Moonglum." Even at the cost of a 2 CD set that one song is worth it.
