Cornucopia of Pavarotti's works.......2007-03-01

This is a "Super hits" CD, with over forty different cuts (quite a few of which have appeared elsewhere, of course). For those who are aficionados of Pavarotti, this is what might be called "hog heaven."

Disc 1 features estimable works such as "Nessun dorma" (well done, with his voice showing to good effect), "Che gelida manina" (excellently done, with good characterization), ""Celeste Aida" (elegantly sung), "Di quella pira" (a much better than average version), "E lucevan le stelle" (Pavarotti does a nice job in the Puccini-Verdi repertoire), "La donna e mobile" (sung with aplomb), "Recondita armonia" (the other aria from Tosca, which also shows Pavarotti's voice off to good effect), and so on.

Disc 2 is especially interesting, because it features a more popular set of works, from the redoubtable "O sole mio" (richly orchestrated and nicely sung, not overpowered by Pavarotti's operatic voice), "Core n'grato" (compare with Caruso's version), "Oh, holy night," "La danza" (spritely sung with excellent breath control in a treacherous song), "Santa Lucia" (again, smoothly sung), "Ave Maria" (seemingly sung with respect and affection).

A cornucopia of Pavarottiana. For those fans of Pavarotti, this "greatest hits" collection will be welcome. For those who may not be aware of this tenor when his voice was still fresh, this is a fine entrée to his work.

To combine a voice as beautiful as Pavarotti's with some of the world's greatest music and outstanding orchestras, and end up with this...`thing'...is unforgivable. After buying and listening to it, it brought to mind those painful words "A fool, a fool. I saw a fool today. I saw him in the mirror."

Great Tenor - Poor CD Quality.......2004-10-11

I have never been a huge fan of Maestro Pavarotti but I must admit that this compilation is a masterful collection of his operatic highlights.

I particularily enjoy the first disc which contains just about all the major tenor arias. The singing is superb and listening to this CD it becomes obvious what the fuss over the pre-3 Tenors Pavarotti was all about - the man really did have one of the greatest tenor voices of all time.
His diction was flawless, his line perfect and his interpretation in keeping with the greatest of the Italian tenors of days gone by.

The second disc is interesting in that it is a bit uneven. It contains a few neapolitan standards, a x-mas song, a duet with Frank Sinatra and some other random selections.

Overall this is a 5 star CD but due to the extremely low volume, particularily on the first and most important disc I can only give it a 4 star rating.

On a final note, anyone puzzeled by the current hype over the now againg and commercially over-blown Pavarotti should purchase this CD. This is the great tenor in his prime and as such a CD well worth having...even if you're not a Pavarotti fan.
I'm still not, but I recognize greatness when I hear it.

Great Music......Horrible Mastering.......2004-07-24

Pavarotti has a voice that can take hold of you and change your entire mood...even if you don't know Italian. The problem with this set is the mastering (mastering evens out the volumes and signal to noise ratio on an album). The first CD in this collection is so quiet that you literally have to crank your player to get any kind of volume. For a professional CD this is absolutely unacceptable.
The song choices are good with the exception of "My Way" with Frank Sinatra. Both singers sound ....ummm...let's just say less than their best on the recording. It sits out like a boil on a pretty girl's face.

With his wondrous soaring vocals and the humble demeanor within his strong body, Pavarotti is an inspiration to Italian- Americans everywhere - Italian-Americans like me. My family plays his beautiful operas on vinyl nearly every day in me Papa's little wine and cheese shop on 18th and Broadway. The customers compliment the music with glee, pinching my plump cheeks with merriment and wishing me well on their way out the door. Ah, how I love this land of America!!

An Uplifting and Amazing Work.......2007-07-29

Brubeck's Mass setting using his signature 5/4 time is a successful marriage of traditional and contemporary, worship and celebration. The "Alleluia" alone is an incredible musical achievement. Brubeck her is clearly God's instrument - and a rare and virtuoso instrument he is!

Beautiful choral work + great jazz.......2007-02-09

This music may throw some people for a loop, as it did me at first, because it is a choral Mass and most of us don't realize that Dave composed choral pieces, with his wife doing the lyrics. This Mass was commissioned by 'Our Sunday Visitor' many years ago. It is absolutely beautiful! The operatic choral sections move into the jazz sections and are truly inspirational. My favorite songs are 'the Desert and the Parched Land/The Peace of Jerusalem' and 'All My Hope', which I can't get out of my head all day! Give them a listen.

Lackluster Effort.......2004-05-05

I was very disappointed in this CD. This piece in no way compares with Brubeck's "Gates of Justice", which is spectacular. There are a few worthwhile moments for the soloists, but for the most part, the writing is uninspired.

A Worthy Effort.......2002-07-23

"To Hope!" is Dave Brubeck's attempt at composing a mass, or Christian liturgy. The result is mixed. Unlike Vince Guaraldi's masterpiece "Grace Cathedral Concert," this is not a jazz piano mass. Instead, it is largely a contemporary-classical work, focused on vocals and traditional arrangements. It does, however, include several jazz passages, including one that swings almost like a '50s surf-rock record. Not everyone will like this recording, but every fan of jazz or contemporary sacred music should listen to it.

A Celebration of Dave Brubecks Works.......2000-03-15

This CD truly shows the diversity of the genius composer Dave Brubeck. Also credit should to be given to Russell Gloud, the conductor for this CD. This working is one of the greatest pieces by Mr. Brubeck. I recommend this CD to any classical music or jazz fan

Queen of Songs.......2007-07-29

I received this CD 'San Fracisco and other Jeanette MacDonald Favorites' a few days ago and have listened to it carefully several times. She is about a generation before my time; so far I have seen only two pictures of her: 'San Francisco' and 'The Merry Widow'. In San Francisco, I discovered she can also sing opera successfully to some degree As for The Merry Widow, I much prefer the later version performed by Lana Turner and Fernando Lamas although Turner didn't sing by herself in the film and Lamas is a lot more convincing than Maurice Chevalier as a Casanova type beau; to be truthful, I can't stand grandpa Chevalier. I beleive I also saw another of her movie which she played quite late in her career because she played mother to Jane Powell, this one I saw in the theater in my teenage days, for your information, I saw almost every MGM musicals in those heyday years. Unfortunately though, I don't quite remember the story of it, but I do remember vaguely that MacDonald sang Un bel di from Puccini's Madama Butterfly and when she sang she formed her mouth so beautifully that one could forget it if she didn't sing well.

One thing I can assert with confidence is that MacDonald is a very beautiful lady oozes with glamour, and is very classy. Classiness was a very prominent and widespread quality of female stars in that era, Lana Turner who played the wealthy merry widow was just one case. If I were to make a list it would occupy a full page, nowadays, it would be impossible to name just three or four female stars with class, no offense, please. Now let me come back to the main subject that is MacDonald's art of singing. Well, she certainly has good vocal technigue, her high note is firm to the very top and she is able to sustain it for a considerable duration as she has displayed quite often in this disc. The voice itself is delicate and sweet, just like her person. However, she tends to sing with monotone which make her singing sounds bland, like no. 4, Ah! Sweet Mystery of Life, may be if she move a notch down the scale it would sound more pleasant. Songs My Mother Taught Me is just about the only song she successfully sings with feelings. Here, I would like to point out that a few songs are worth repeated listenings: Ciribiribin, The Donkey Serenade, Italian Street Song, and of course, Songs My Mother Taught Me.
Songs no. 16 to 22, I'm sorry to say that they are not up to my standard, I have been listening to opera singing for over thirty years you know. I must mention here that MacDonald's French seems very good, I don't know French though, nevertheless, I can tell just by listening

Queen of Songs is a title crowned her by the Chinese people in that time, she was indeed highly esteemed.

Jeanette MacDonald Favorites.......2007-05-13

This CD is an incredible testimony and celebration of an American Master Singer.
A must have for all. An introduction to quality and good taste for a new generation of music lovers.

A MUST for any Jeanette fan!.......2006-04-25

This CD is a gem! The songs included on it are beautiful and show off MacDonald's incredible voice. The best part of this CD, however, is the sound quality. Unlike many of her other recordings, and those featuring her with frequent costar Nelson Eddy, the sound on this CD is pristine, and you can barely tell the recordings are 50+ years old!

Jeanette MacDonald Was Unique.......2001-03-12

It really doesn't matter whether or not she could sing; Jeanette MacDonald was unique. On these old recordings, her voice sounds thin and watery, and contemporary tastes do not respond so readily to the sentimentality and predictability of her movies. But she was a gracious lady and glittering presence on the silver screen. These film songs do suggest the excitement she generated when her movies first appeared. And how many truly major singers she inspired! Joan Sutherland recalled meeting MacDonald a few years before her death. Said Sutherland: "I still had stars in my eyes."

An excellent demonstration of Jeanette MacDonald's artistry.......1998-12-18

The highlights of this Jeanette MacDonald CD include her excellent singing of Delibes' "Les Filles de Cadiz," the Bach-Gounod "Ave Maria," and the "Jewel Song" from "Faust." A much-underrated artist, MacDonald proves here that she can handle a wide range of music, from concert songs and opera arias to familiar tunes from her operetta films. Particularly fine are her renditions of "Only a Rose," and Herbert's "Romany Life" (in spite of an amateurish male chorus). Highly recommended not only as a tribute to filmdom's first lady of song, but also to listeners who enjoy both opera and musical comedy.

Mostly complete.......2007-04-10

I think it's great that you can pick up Angra's first two studio albums in one relatively inexpensive package, but before you buy it you should be aware that while it's true that you get both albums in full, you won't get the three bonus tracks that were included on the US version of Angel's Cry. Those tracks consisted of an alternate version of "Evil Warning" and remixes of "Angels Cry" and "Carry On". That's probably not a big deal to most people, but some metal fans tend to be a bit obsessive about owning all of a band's material. If you're one of those types (and I definitely fall in that category), you may want to buy Holy Land and Angels Cry separately. The truly daring may even try tracking down the elusive Holy Box.

A brilliant way of introducing yourself to this band.......2006-11-07

OK, I've reviewed both these albums individually and am not going to write the same two reviews here. Instead I'm just going to say that on their own I gave each of these albums four stars and so to be able to get them both as a mid priced package is just awesome.

Sometimes these sort of compilations are money grabs by record companies but in this case it's just a brilliant opportunity. The genre Angra plays is melodic power metal, particularly on disc 1 which is the album Angels Cry. They had some progressive twinges and those really exploded into fruition on the second disc of this set, the ablum Holy Land.

This is the perfect opportunity to explore this bands early years, get two of their three full length studio albums and is should also be noted that two of their EP's - those being Freedom Call and Unholy Live were also released as a 'double team' in some territories just like this package so the lucky punter could perhaps get pretty much the whole early Angra story (excepting Fireworks) with just two purchases. Great stuff and well worth your money - and I'd direct you to peruse the reviews written about these two albums on their individual listings for more specific info. Hopefully it will help you make up your mind whether to explore a new band.

And for fans who arrived later on in the Angra story this is a great way to fill the gap in your collection.

Folk, Power and Speed - Amazing Album.......2005-02-07

This monumental release from the Brazilian power-metal act is a profound improvement over their debut, Angel's Cry. Absolutely blazing and intense, the album is true symphonic power metal with Brazilian folk instrumentation.

The album begins with the most unexpected introduction to a power-metal album - a soft, ambient passage with a female opera singer vocalizing in the background followed by a storm - and then the anthemic "Nothing to Say" begins. With amazing riffs, a memorable chorus and impressive classical interludes (very similar to the pauses in Rhapsody's "Emerald Sword", which would come later), this song is the perfect opener for a stellar album. "Silence and Distance" begins with singer Andre Matos' soft, almost infantile croon, only to kick into overdrive with his brutal wail. Each song on this album is indispensable, from the Brazilian influences in "Holy Land" to the rapid-fire rhythms of "Z.I.T.O" to the sweet delicacy of "Deep Blue", a delightful ballad.

The symphonic elements are never over-the-top, nor are they too subtle - they work very well to compliment each song. The two best tracks stand out quite nicely. The 10-minute "Carolina IV" is the album's culmination, with everything from a choir to unforgettable symphonic pauses and accompanying orchestrations. The idyllic "Make Believe" is beautiful in every respect - the lyrics are undeniably emotional and the music is almost playful. The album is a monument to power and with its listener-friendly ballads and symphonic interludes, Holy Land proves to be an album worthy of greatness.

Pure Power Melodic Metal that started it all!!!.......2004-12-18

The Debut album from Angra was something that changed the heavy Metal forever inspiring such bands as Rhapsody,Secret Sphere,Edguy etc. The music is progresive melodic metal played with power and ounstanding guitar works, along with an awesome singer that you cant get higher than him. Angels cry is perfect and Holy Land is a perfect mixture between Brazilian influences and powermetal , you will be happy when you hear any of the songs from this double pack.

Good on you Bostridge! These BRitten songs are fabulous - didn't even know that some of them even existed! JOhnson's playing makes for a perfect duo with Bostridge's intelligent interpretations of these brilliant songs.

Oh Hearken all ye true lovers of GOOD MUSIC for this album presents some of the most profoundly beautiful songs you will ever hear anywhere!!!It would be worthwhile even if you only enjoyed the first 3 songs on the disc: the 3 Realizations from Harmonia Sacra which are 'Lord! I have sinned','Hymn to God the Father' by Pelham Humfreys and 'A Hymn on Divine Music' (which is absolutely so meaningful to us who love the art of music) by William Croft all arranged by Britten for tenor and harp. And all sung by one of the most exquisitely beautiful tenor voices ever to come out of the UK; flawless diction,resonant and vibrant tone quality and highly emotional portraying every little nuance in the song.
I bought this album because the music of Britten has always intrigued me and I was not disappointed in the variety of songs included on this album. The nine Holy Sonnets of John Donne are profound religious meditations,all of which are concerned with death and repentance. The songs 'Evening','Morning', and 'Night', are taken from the incidental music for Ronald Duncan's Masque 'This Way to the Tomb'.There are songs with settings of W.H. Auden, and several other writers too numerous to mention, but suffice it to say that there is sufficient variety to keep all listeners interested throughout the disc. Some of the songs I found particularly interesting are:'The Red Cockatoo',Waley-'A Poison Tree',Blake-'Cradle Song for Eleanor',MacNeice-and 'Death be not Proud'. When you have an Ian Bostridge available there is no need to look for anyone else. He has all the vocal skills and nuances to sing each song as an island in itself; simply marvelous interpretations, and he is fortunate to have Graham Johnson to accompany him.

Good, but could be much better..........2004-11-02

While I do like some of what Bostridge does, his recorded performances to me seem to be filled more and more with musical gimmicks. His tone I find refreshing from so many English tenors who sound like they are in pain while singing, but Brostridge truly does lack a good legato line and he often uses a horrible strident quality for emphisis of text.

Peter Pears' recordings of many of these songs are still in many ways the difinitive performances, but I do like to hear other voices sing this repertoire and unfortunately very few options are out there. So, kudos to Bostridge for recording these songs, but lets not crown him THE new Britten singer of our time.

This CD lets us know that not only was Britten the greatest of English composers since Purcell, but he is an absolute master at songwriting. His economic style is perfect for songs, his choice of text is truly sophisticated and his idiomatic writing for both piano and voice put the listener always on the edge of his or her seat. Bostridge's light but powerful voice suits these songs perfectly. And Graham Johnson's piano playing is unsurpassable. One of my favorite CDs!

This set tells you why Jussi Bjorling is a perennial entrant in the "Tenor of the Century" sweepstakes. Even as the voice darkens from the light lyric to the full, darker instrument of the later recordings, we hear a singer whose elegant style, lovely timbre and innate musicality touch the heart. Many of the selections are sung in Swedish, less of a liability than you might suppose. In whatever language, Bjorling's molten gold flows lavishly. He eschews the sobs and sentimentality that disfigure so much verismo repertory, making his points with stylish vocalism. He's been called a "cool" singer, but try his Puccini and Verdi arias on Disc One and you'll find more than enough vocal and emotional heat. The selections include many neglected Scandinavian songs, sung, like the arias, with a naturalness that disarms criticism. -- Dan Davis

Swedish tenor Jussi Björling gets many votes for the distinction of greatest all-time tenor. Up to the end, the voice projected a boyish vulnerability, though he also had enough stentorian power to sing the heavy Puccini roles and was ready to take on Lohengrin when he died. He was so deeply musical he eschewed the usual tenor vulgarity without ever slighting the music's theatricality. Even these four well-filled discs of arias and songs can't fully encompass the vocal riches he left behind, but there's a lot here, much of it from his earliest years and (hope you don't mind) sung in a Swedish translation. --David Patrick Stearns

Superb!.......2001-07-29

This is an wonderful compilation of one of the most incredible voices on record. Whether you are a new or old Bjorling fan -- and who could hear that voice and not be enthralled by it -- this is a fine CD to have. The quality of the recording is excellent, and the range in years, from 1930 to 1959, gives a splendid overview of his dazzling talent. In addition to many of the arias one might expect, there are also lieder and songs in Swedish, as well as some charming duets with Jussi's wife, Anna-Lisa. I have quite a few other Bjorling CDs, and this is one of the best in terms of quality and scope. It is a most worthy addition to any Bjorling collection, regardless of its size.

Beatiful singing - but where are the Swedish texts?.......2001-06-22

This is an excellent collection, the best available overview of a great tenor.

This would get 4 stars but has been marked down for only supplying token texts and translations in the large booklet. It is understandable (sort of) that the Italian opera excerpts don't merit texts and translations as (apart from the Callas recitals series) EMI generally doesn't provide texts with historical issues. However the tempting inclusion of a dozen or so texts to the Italian and Swedish songs makes one all the more aware of the miserliness of not providing all the texts.

The ULTIMATE Collection.......1999-11-02

When starting my Bjorling collection, I saw MANY CDs, with his early recordings. I was in a quandry as to what to buy, UNTIL I found this set. TRULY remarkable in many levels.FIRST and foremost, the voice. Captured in all levels, from the earliest to the latest. Truly wonderful, and the Swedish versions are a real treat to hear, don't worry, the Italian versions are here too!!Secondly, the remastering process. This set was remastered at Abbey Studios in London. For the first time I've heard, they actually pressed NEW 78s from the metal plates, and THEN remastered the new discs!!! Inspired, and the results--incredible.I find myself listening to Disc 3 the most. Very interesting, as it is the Swedish one. When the songs are terrific, along with the "standard" tenor arias, and it all comes together, it is PURE MAGIC!! I will admit that due to time limitations of recordings of this era, the opera house Bjorling is not fully conveyed. There are other CDs for that. Most notably "Romeo and Juliet", and for a REAL thrill, his ATLANTA concert, in STEREO, so much so, that the piano is even divided; left hand left, right hand right. Wait a minute, am I playing TWISTER??:-)) But if you want to skip all those unknown labels, you couldn't have a MORE complete set. ALL wit the great remastering I spoke of. Bjorling--His voice will NEVER die, at least in MY house!!!

Definitive survey of one of the finest singers on record.......1998-09-25

Jussi Bjoerling was one of the greatest singers of the century. His voice is pure, effortless and yet thrilling. Even better than the quality of the voice is his style. He never scoops up to a note nor does he ever whoop down from one, instead, he uses perfect legato and faultless intonation to deliver the cleanest sound you'll ever hear from a tenor.

This collection, from the large set of EMI recordings, provides a wonderful survey of Bjoerling's career. He was a straight 'spinto' tenor, that is, between a lyrical tenor (like Pavarotti) and a dramatic tenor (like Domingo). Most of the Puccini roles demand a spinto and those are the roles that Bjoerling was unbeatable in (particularly Des Grieux in Manon Lescaut). However, I think I most prize this collection for the songs sung in English on the last disc. I had some of them on a cassette I wore out in the car and others on a vinyl disc I wore out at home. For shear beauty of voice, the Berceuse by Jocelyn is stunning. For perfect diction, intonation and style, Love but a Day is breathtaking. Buy this set and I guarantee you'll fall in love with what many think is the finest voice on record.

Since 1979 this intrepid troupe of singers, musicians, and dancers has worked to revive the folk music of Palestine. Far from being a dry academic exercise, El-Funoun have become a vital part of the cultural identity of the Palestinian people. Zaghareed is a concept album based on the music played during a traditional wedding ceremony. It subtly challenges the traditions of arranged marriages and of the woman's place in society, within a context of beautifully played Arabic music. Instrumental pieces feature qanun, oud, buzuq, flutes, and reed instruments, and various percussion. Wonderful Wedding Music from Palestine, a pefect example of the beauty that is apart of the Palestinian culture. The preservation of anything to do with real Palestine is important because we as a people need to be heard and understood. We have a wonderful culture that is threatened everyday that our country is occupied. So many of us are refugee's in countries that are not our home and a CD like this teaches that we are a good people. And that what is happening to us, is a travesty to humanity.

This is a wonderful album and I highly recommend it. El-Funoun's CD is innovative and creative. Yes the songs are traditionally based, but el-funoun has managed to build on this tradition and add to it producing something that is reflective of what Palestinian culture is today and not how it was in the past.

It is a straighforward album with strong and lilting vocals, emotional folk songs, and hypnotic rhythms. May the world become more aware and educated regarding this kind of music and the music and folk dance of the region, and more importantly, the symbolism,emotion, and history that created it.

EL Fonoun is a palestinan folk troop that uses traditional intruments harmonies. - it has a purity and sincerity that is lacking in modern music - there is something truly captivating about it - though a secular it has a spirtual quality.

These songs must have been written for Amaize.......2004-04-07

My gripe with most recordings of "art songs" is that the performances are boring, as if the music has been fed through a vocal processor, technique overrides heart. This is never the case with Odekhiren Amaize, who makes each song his own. For my money, there is no voice or heart more perfectly suited to interpret these deep, rich Russian songs than his deep, rich Bass-Baritone...the combination of Rakhmaninov and Amaize is nothing short of amazing, and I was moved to tears on more than one occasion even though (not speaking Russian and not first having read the English translations) I didn't have a clue what the text was about. Absolutely stunning!

Sir Thomas Allen makes the point in a note with this delightful collection of 25 ballads that he rates it beside his many recordings of music heavyweights like Wagner and Verdi. There is no need to justify his enthusiasm, for it is clear from the outset that he treats the music with the sort of complete respect that has made him one of our most-loved singers. It is too easy to be dismissive of this repertoire, but when it is taken at its own value and sung and played with honesty, as it is here, the results are heartwarming. Allen recalls hearing the songs in the family home following the two world wars, "a time when there seemed a need for reassurance." Perhaps that time is with us again, and these performances strike a chord. There are many old friends here and perhaps some new discoveries. Who can resist the beautifully constructed "Love, could I only tell thee" or that old potboiler "The Lost Chord", especially when given with such warmth? A picture shows Allen and family in full vocal spate. At the piano is his father, to whose memory he dedicates the disc. --Keith Clarke
