When British composer Karl Jenkins launched Adiemus with the Songs of Sanctuary album in 1995, it was a fresh and exhilarating take on global music. Jenkins used choral vocals similar to Enya's, but spiked with a language of the imagination (merging African and Latin phonemes) and stoked by Jenkins's pastoral arrangements. Never wholly original--Lisa Gerrard and Elizabeth Fraser had already worked out fantasy vocal designs and the 1960s African mass "Missa Luba" effected a similar choral/African/Latin sound--Adiemus nevertheless found a new take on English composers' penchant for choirs. However, after six years and four albums mining this vein, Jenkins's sound rings more hollow with each recording.
The Eternal Knot is drawn from Jenkins's soundtrack to a BBC documentary called The Celts. You might recall that Enya also evolved her sound in the late 1980s doing a soundtrack for another documentary called The Celts. Taking his titles from the Celtic legends that populate the documentary, Jenkins orchestrates cinematic landscapes full of swelling crescendos and dynamic cadences. Less oppressive than the heavily orchestrated Adiemus II, The Eternal Knot still wears thin. He casts Miriam Stockley's voice into a boys-choir register, turning her staccato phonemes into incessant prattle. But when she's in her warmer middle range, her layered voice is enveloping. Despite the theme of the album, Celtic music is only used as an occasional touchstone, with uilleann piper Davy Spillane, a few bodhran-style percussion grooves, and harpist Catrin Finch providing some relief from Jenkins's string-laden classical pretensions. --John Diliberto

Adiemus IV.......2007-05-07
This is another celtic cd which stirs the blood to your core. It has great melodies and wonderful arrangements to compliment the vocals. I will look forward to purchasing more of Adiemus in the future.
whaaaaaat?????.......2007-01-06
that was the first thing that popped into my head when i heard this album. i loved `songs of sanctuary' and was heartily disappointed not to also love this album. while it is obvious that the music is celtic-inspired, it is *only* the music that is so. the vocals seem to float along on their own with no relevance to the instrumentals beneath them. the language, which is the same play-language as `sanctuary', is blatantly out of place here. while with `sanctuary', despite the make-believe quality of the words, the quality of the vocal sound was instantly recognizable as south african. but those nasal tones and front-of-the-mask, brassy notes don't translate well to a celtic sound. (in fact, the whole album sounds like a clash of two cultures. as if a south african choir accidentally got routed to the shannon airport and collided with the chieftans.) on the whole, a disappointing album. if you want celtic music, buy a putumayo collection or *anything* by narada, clannad, celtic woman, etc. don't buy this album.
Good...Although two of the Songs are on my Ipod..........2006-01-24
My favorite songs are "Cu Chullain" and "Math was a Wizard". Cu Chullain is a good song for a ballet performance.
By the way, I own these two songs on my Ipod!

New Age with an eclectic blend of styles from across the musical map!.......2005-11-23
Some earlier reviewers would suggest that this isn't up to the standards that Karl Jenkins achieved in some of his earlier output. I couldn't respond to that because this is the first Adiemus recording I've ever heard and, frankly, I loved every second of it. I'm thrilled that other listeners think the earlier recordings are better because I've now got something to really look forward to.
For me this recording evinced a blend of emotional responses - quiet contemplation, relaxation, toe-tapping, a satisfied smile, that whole body moving response to a driving rhythm and a joyful sense of participation in an all-encompassing musical experience. The recording is an eclectic blend of styles that cover an enormous range - Celtic rhythms and fiddling tunes in the style of River Dance; hard rock and steady beats that took a page out of Enigma's play book; a beautifully blended chorus of female voices that might well have included Enya, Diane Arkenstone and Loreena McKennitt; orchestral backgrounds that ranged from lush full orchestral accompaniment to pizzicato violin arpeggios that would have done Tchaikovsky proud in The Nutcracker; simple but effective, pleasing blues style acoustic guitar; full-bodied high speed choral sections that might have been penned by Karl Orff as part of the unforgettable Carmina Burana; and, a very effective seven beat piece that reminded me of the rhythms of Dave Brubeck's Unsquare Square Dance or Moe Kaufman's Swingin' Shepherd Blues!
Well, to each their own I suppose. It's certainly possible that this CD suffered by comparison to the quality of his other works but as a first time listener, I've got nothing but praise for it!

Unimaginative.......2004-06-14
Unlike 'Songs of Sanctuary', this album lacks imagination and invention. It comes across as somewhat monotonous and overly 'camp'.
Cu Chulain is a reasonable start but even there the urgent contribution by the violins comes too early, and by the end of the 'song', the concept becomes tiresome. The title track seems to be depicting something monumental in its climatic outbursts but if so, the effect is more visual (the documentary itself) than aural. It's odd how there is apparently no language used here yet 'Palace of the Crystal Bridge' manages to sound like some clueless surfer-girl taking herself way too seriously.
'The Wooing of Etain' is a beautiful instrumental and one of the very few pieces on the album that is thought-provoking, as is 'King of the Sacred Grove' (which is mellow and sounds suitably regal)....this is more of what I've come to expect/appreciate in Jenkins. Even so, he could have done more to build a climax towards the end of this, the third longest piece on the album.
'Songs' such as 'The Dagda' would be interesting diversions/fillers for the album if it wasn't for the synthesized, mass-product result of the album overall. Less 'ethnic-sounding' and more towards 'tacky' (e.g., the duo separated by 1 octave sung in unison at the end of 'Hermit of the Sea Rock'), this isn't as moving an experience as some would laud it to be.

excellent for massage therapists.......2004-01-22
This is my personal favorite CD to have playing when I receive a massage. It helps me drop to a much deeper level of relaxation than pretty much any other CD I've experienced. There is something about the drone that touches something in the brain to help put you in a decidedly altered state. I'd recommend it to anyone who gives or gets massage.
Wonderfully relaxing.......2003-02-07
A friend sent me this CD to help me heal after a surgery. Five years later, I'm still listening to it regularily for relaxation. I never seem to tire of these soothing sounds.
Great relaxation music.......2001-03-27
Droning or monotone sounds in music can produce a relaxing, meditative effect. (This is the hypnotic power of the digeridoo, the bagpipes, gongs, and the sitar, all of which have a drone component in their sound.)
The prettiest selection on this album is Cathedral. The "Dragon" cut is deep and mysterious. Probably would put your kids to sleep, or even you, after a long hard day.
If you like this CD, the other Kay Gardner CD, Rainbow Path, is also excellent (not droning however.) Either way, she is an innovative musician.
A different approach to music for healing........2000-03-12
I am a healer and am always looking for just the right sounds to augment my work. Drone Zone is unusal yet captivating and beautifully appropriate for healing. I highly recommend it.
the best meditation music.......2000-01-25
Loved this CD! Haven't found anything else like it. The drone background sounds cover almost all the tones of the chakhras and the overtone melodies are simple and beautiful.

A Lasting Delight.......2001-02-05
A whole world of delightful music and lovely poetry (Rilke, Whitman, Yeats...)on a single CD. Hilariously funny at times, it tells also of pathos, of everlasting love, of old age and youth, of hobos and Heaven's own angels. Some of the songs are familiar (Copland, Barber), others commissioned and lovingly composed for this particular recording. The freshness of the young voices, the painstaking polish of every detail of performance, the discreet skill and subtlety of the accompanying pianists are all part of the joy of this CD. And the delicate instrumental interludes a charming surprise.
This is ginseng for the soul!
Wonderful!.......2000-03-05
An incredible CD! The American Boychoir is amazing! Also my little brother, attending the boychoir school, is on this!
Lush and brilliant musicianship.......2000-01-14
I was familiar only with the Aaron Copland pieces but even those sound new and fresh in this recording - young voices, both the American Boychoir (maybe the best children's choir in the world right now) and the two female soloists, give a lavish interpretation to music most of us haven't heard - you'll enjoy it if you like classical vocals.
A beautiful mix of talent and musicianship.......1999-12-28
Brilliant! a stunning performance by the american boychoir and soloists cathryn king and patricia petebon. The recording, which was recorded in the princeton university chapel, has wonderful acoustics and the choir sounds spectacular. Under the direction of James Litton and accompanied by Matthew Schwinghammer, the choir performs american songs by composers such as Aaron Copland and Samuel Barber. Their performance is stunning and is not to be missed!

Album Description
The second CD from this electronic music master contains Tod Dockstader's brooding, ominous Apocalypse, along with the piece famous for its haunting use of processed laughter, Luna Park, which a Fanfare critic called one of the finest works of electronic music I've ever heard. (He adds: The rest of the disc is not a let-down.) Also appearing for the first time on this CD are Two Fragments from Apocalypse and Four Telemetry Tapes, the latter being Dockstader's last true organized sound pieces.
In addition to receiving extraordinary praise within the United States, Starkland's two Dockstader CDs have won glowing affirmations around the world, from Canada's Musicworks (vital and fascinating) to France's Revue & Corrigée (astonishing) to England's The Wire (extraordinary).
Dockstader's music turns out to have a surprising relevance to music created decades later; he's been described as one of the godfather's of Nurse With Wound, and a distant cousin of rap and techno (Option). Craig Anderton writes that Dockstader was one of the few to master the art of assembling tape-recorded sounds and painstakingly splicing, cutting, dubbing, manipulating and mixing to create final compositions, then adds: If you think that sounds similar to the procedures used to create today's cutting-edge pop music, you're right.
Customer Reviews:
unmusic.......2005-09-23
bought with "Quatermass"...certainly the better of the two...for those unfamiliar, dockstader was of the 'musique concrete' ilk (google it if you have to), so what you're gonna find here are everyday and some obscure sounds married electronically and transmuted into surreal compositions that defy anyone to dance to them...one of those albums best heard alone and intent upon, more of a study of the history of the evolution of modern sound, if you dig...most interesting after reading about dockstader and the complex techniques he had to employ to create these works in the 60's (yes, the 60's)...a collector's joy
Sound Composition Master.......2005-07-28
This is a great listening experience for anyone willing to LISTEN to a recording in the foreground rather than in the background. Dokstader's composition require patience and stillness as well as personal cerebral silence. His work acts like an aural sculpture and that in itself is a remarkable achievement. Whatever genre titles have been thrown at this form of composition (Concrete music, Tape music, Electronic), it is a form of musical expression unique to our time. Dockstader pulls at the day to day sounds that surround us snaring bits here and there, blending and cutting sonic landscapes the exist only in the ether between transmission towers and the microscopic space between iron-coated plastic tape and an electro-magnetized surface.
A great and important work!

The Best of Polystylism.......2002-07-30
Lou Harrison is simply a wonder. His music seems to be able to touch any of his wide musical and philosophical interests and yet remain distinctive, and accessible. This CD, which contains mostly music from the 40s, perhaps more than any other recording that I've heard introduces the listener to the wide range of Harrison's musical world.
The main work on this CD is Rapunzel, and what a surprise it is! Rapunzel is based on a telling of the fairytale by William Morris, with a dose of psychology thrown in. The tonal language is twelve-note, perhaps even serial at times. And yet, it is never dense or cluttered and it is always lyrical. Harrison, even in this early piece from the 40's, is much more interested in communication than in theory. As a result, Rapunzel is an immediately attractive work, an unusual thing to say for such a twelve note piece.
The other works on this CD are more in Harrison's modal genre. The Air for the Poet is a lovely work, mellifluous and yet moving. Songs from the Forest is one of Harrison's East/West chamber pieces and a very successful blend of western instruments and eastern techniques. And Air in g minor is a lovely, almost Baroque style melody over a continuous drone. It's haunting.
All in all, this is another great Harrison CD on New Albion. This might not be the first CD that I would choose to introduce someone to this magical composer, but for those of us who are already converted, this fills in the gaps of an important time in Harrison's musical development.
America's Most Verstile Composer.......2000-05-05
Lou Harrison is America's most versitile composer, plain and simple. He can assimilate any style and make it his own, and more, even forms which are alien to the American Muse he can render intelligible and accessible. He is as at home with a gamelon as he is with a symphony orchestra. This recording goes from the graceful Air for the Poet through the dark serialism of the title opera (on a text by William Morris) to the meditative Songs in the Forest, to the very melodic Air in g minor. It is all amazingly listenable music and because of its variety there is likely to be something for everyone. Well, maybe not: there are too many facets of Harrison's talent for one, or even a dozen, CDs to express. If you don't know his music, however, you ought to give him a try. He is just plain wonderful.

If monotonous repetitious drone is your thing, this is YOUR cd!.......2006-05-06
This title represents my first disagreement with Jerry Kranitz of Aural Innovations - he's usually right on the money, but not here.
It is said that this album "flows seamlessly from one track to the next with a psychedelic feast for the ears..." - and this is mostly to my liking. I expect to hear an ebb and flow of highs and lows with unpredicatble changes of direction that keep my interest peaked...instead, what I got was an eighty minute dirge of sound that never varied AT ALL in pitch, tone, tempo, instrumentation or theme.
I'll break it down this way: The first eight minutes were almost interesting, but by six minutes, I'm wonder where the "shift" will come in since this is strictly incoherent rambling with no structure nor melody. The 2nd eight minutes was a duplicate of the first eight minutes and it's testing my patience.
Gee, the 3rd, 4th and 5th eight minute segments sound exactly like the first! I hate it, but I've commited to hearing so on we go...
As expected, the 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th eight minute sections could still easily been the first eight minutes looped back in!
By the TENTH ITERATION OF THE FIRST EIGHT MINUTES, I'm ready to jab chopsticks thru my eardrums just to make it stop. Yeah, the tracks "flowed together seamleassly", but with a featureless monotony that can only loosely be referred to as "music". Eighty minutes of continuous sound without even the tiniest variation - I'll be listing mine here used REAL CHEAP like the other twentysomething people that found this unlistenable.
Suggestions: Don't waste your cash, but if you've heard this and you like it, try hanging out in a machine shop or a lumber mill for a few hours and this might start introducing you to the concept that: Even if you like a droning, senseless, meandering, A-tonal, nonrythmic collection of sound, it will be more interesting if SOMETHING variates from time to time.
I gave it two stars instead of one since this will drive the radio listening teeny bopper kiddies and republicans up the frickin wall - something I approve of full-heartedly.
Sorry Jerry, for the first time, I disagree - this is not music and can be duplicated with a chainsaw or washing machine...and maybe that's all we actually hear on Abunai! "Round Wound"
Ouch babe!
Their best album, but a horrible introduction.......2005-06-15
Just hold your horses! This album is incredible. From the organs to the decidedly psychedelic guitar work, there are few flaws. Wound Round runs for 79+ minutes, and flows from one track to the next, which is always a nice touch. There is no stand-out track, because every song is, well, very similar to the previous one. Nonetheless, this album is incredible.
Now, onto the second part of my title. This was the first album I heard from Abunai!, and I fell in love with it. In fact, I thought I had fallen in love with the band, but I was mistaken. After owning Wound Round for a while, I decided to buy an older album, which was Universal Mind Decoder. After listening, I soon realized that the two albums sounded like two completely different bands. Once I heard nearly all of their recordings, I concluded that Wound Round was the black sheep in the bunch. Abunai! was an AMAZING band, but Wound Round is not their definitive album/sound, even though it is an amazing album as well.
If you're looking for a great album, go ahead and buy this. If you're looking to get into a great band, try Universal Mind Decoder and other earlier works.

I cannot believe that only one OTHER person had revieved this disc before I did.Another thing I find hard to buy is this ensemble is actually an American band, coming to you from Boston.'Round...' is the band's third effort as I believe they may've recently disbanded.Who knows?Maybe they'll reunite sometime in one form or another.CD comes packed like a set of guitar strings,so you'll need to get a new jewel box to protect this precious sound artifact.A total of 21 tracks with a running time of 79:24.I understand this disc is more krautrock like than their two earlier CD's,'Universal Mind Decoder'('97)and 'The Mystic River Sound'('99).Tunes that about nearly gave me a natural high were "Time Of The Funk-Lords",the airy "Herb-Skirt",the way out-of-this-galaxy fourteen-minute "Fearsome Bat-Man/Drowning In Light","Anti-Twilight Arch",the straight ahead "Rolling Of The Stones","Electric Reynolds" and the dramatic closer "Buzz Bombs".Whew!Better have some time on your hands when you check out this audio gem.Beside kraut, some MIGHT describe 'Round Wound' as part space rock, part dream neo psychedelic.Line up:Kris Thompson-vocals,synthesizer,organ&theremin,Joe Turner-drums,Brendan Quinn-guitar and Dan Parmenter-bass.Should appeal to fans of Spiritualized,SubArachnoid Space,Hawkwind,Flying Saucer Attack,Spacemen 3 and Amon Duul II.It just doesn't get any better.A MUST HAVE!!
Hardhitting super neokrautrock experience........2003-08-19
This album is all instrumental. It flows, soars. Brilliantly patched-together snippets from long jam sessions, it has a deja-vu quality to it. It has a funky rhythm section, drenching organs, and a jammy novelty quality to the guitars. Nothing groundbreaking or memorable on an intense artistic level occurs, but it is quite an experience to behold and very enjoyable to listen to. I would point it to Hendrix if I had to point it somewhere, which is probably why it is rather weak for spacerock. Give me Kinski's superb guitar textures and dynamics; give me Mogwai's ordered crescendos; sonic youth's expert nonconventionalism. This is ordinary spacerock that miraculously still puts out. (A modern pointer would be Subarachnoid Space). I would have loved to hear this group develop more cohesion but they have broken up. The moody portions are close but no cigar. But I wouldn't disregard this disk. Overall, it's great, it just moves too fast. It's like a spacerock palette.

The spongetones show their style.......2001-08-10
The Spongetones can be criticized as being a Beatles sound alike band. True, the concerts they've had are monuments to the Beatles music. And, true, they do play the power pop that other groups such as Badfinger and the Raspberry's played in their hey day.
This Band is much more than that, however. In terms of enjoyment, they are a wonderful 60 minutes (more or less) of joy. But, rather than taking the Beatles style and aping it, they have taken the Beatles style and have molded it into something that is more of their own.
Songs like "Skinny" and "Rattle My Chain" clearly fall into the Power Pop catagory that I grew up with and still enjoy. But, where do you place "Spirit World"? This band had (has?) the potential of becoming more than a passing thing... let's hope they continue to progress and grow.
If you're into power pop, and want to expand your horizons and explore the possiblities pop this CD into your player, put on your headphones and drift away...
Get Sponged.......2000-08-23
This album has everything--great music, clever lyrics--what more could a fan want? I'm especially fond of "Skinny" but "Try To Please" and "L'Amour/Le Guerre" are also especially memorable songs. This one's a must if you're already a Spongetones fan but it's also a good intro to the band since it showcases what they do best!

Album Description
Volume Six of Bridge's Grammy-winning George Crumb Edition features the premiere recording of the composer's only work for solo organ, the roof-raising "Pastoral Drone." Organist Gregory D'Agostino, quite literally pulls out all of the stops in Crumb's "in your face" essay. Also featured on this CD is the first digital recording of Crumb's seminal orchestral masterpiece, "Echoes of Time and the River." Awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1968, "Echoes of Time and the Rive," is among Crumb's most personal scores, with its four movements ranging from intimate chamber muisc to electrifying tutti outbursts. Bridge Records is also pleased to re-issue, for the first time on CD, legendary mezzo-soprano Jan DeGaetani's reading of Crumb's "Lux Aeterna." DeGaetani's relationship with Crumb inspired many of his finest scores ("Ancient Voices of Children," "Night of the Four Moons," etc.), and this re-mastered recording, at long last, restores her masterful performance to the catalog. Piano virtuoso Robert Shannon continues his work on this series with a powerful performance of "Gnomic Variations," and is joined by violinist Gregory Fulkerson for Crumb's eerily beautiful "Four Nocturnes."
Customer Reviews:
Not a review, just a recommendation.......2003-11-04
Crumb's music is not verbally describable except in technical, objective terms. Since this cd had no reviews, I would like to point out to prospective Crumb buyers who are just getting familiar with his music: If you enjoyed Crumb Edition #5 on Bridge, then you will also enjoy this recording. The music is not
"the same" but is equally interesting and enjoyable. For those
of you who bought "Quest" as their first Crumb cd, and were perhaps disappointed, I would like to point out that "Quest"is the
weakest of the Bridge editions, and would highly recommend all other cds in the series as a good second choice.
