Nice Megadeth collection... but missing a few critical songs.......2007-05-08
THE BAND: Dave Mustaine (lead vocals, guitar) and David Ellefson (bass) appear on all albums. Other band members featured through the years include: Marty Friedman (guitar), Chris Poland (guitar), Al Pitelli (guitar), Jeff Young (guitar), Nick Menza (drums), Jimmy DeGrasso (drums), Chuck Behler (drums), Gar Samuelson (drums).
THE DISC: (2000) 14 tracks clocking in at approximately 71 minutes. Included with the disc is a 10-page booklet containing song titles/credits/times, song lyrics, pictures of all album covers, and thank you's. This compilation follows the band from 1986-2000. Digitally remastered sound. Label - Capitol Records.
ALBUM REPRESENTATION: Peace Sells... But Who's Buying (1 song), So Far So Good... So What? (1), Rust In Peace (1), Countdown To Extinction (2), Youthanasia (2), Cryptic Writings (2), Risk (3), Unreleased (2).
COMMENTS: "Capitol Punishment" is a good mix of Megadeth songs, but it's far from complete. The more recent "Greatest Hits" (2005) has more tracks and minutes, but it too is lacking in the definitive song selection process. Mustaine needs to sell-out to Sony ("Essential" collections), Geffen ("Gold" collections) or Rhino (who is putting compilations together for everyone these days... and their sisters). And, let one of these companies make 2-discs full of their best music. THE GOOD: A lot of good music here including many of the staples (even if it does lean toward the band's newer material) - "Almost Honest", "Trust", "Train Of Consequences", "Sweating Bullets", "Symphony Of Destruction", "Hangar 18", "Holy Wars... The Punishment Due", "Peace Sells", etc. The unreleased songs are good tracks (reminiscent of the "Youthanasia" era), but by no means classic. Songs are in reverse chronological order - a bonus in my book to have these in some kind of order. The remastered sound is crisp. THE NOT SO GOOD: I was never a fan of the danceable "Crush 'Em". The last track features the 4 minute "Peace Sells", followed by a long pause, which then leads into a mix of Megadeth songs "remixed"... comes off sounding like a kid trying to tune his parent's radio from the 1950's - complete with static et all. This to me is a waste of time used on the disc. Include the original version of "Peace Sells", and end it at that - giving you an extra 5 minutes (not to mention the 9+ minutes not used at the end of the disc all ready). I'm sure the label could have added 1/2/3 more tracks. Omissions - songs that needed to be here - "Foreclosure Of A Dream", "Skin O' My Teeth", and "Reckoning Day". Lesser songs that could've been here but didn't make the cut - "Prince Of Darkness", "Breadline", "Elysian Fields", "Into The Lungs Of Hell", "Take No Prisoners", and "Good Mourning / Black Friday". No album representation from "Hidden Treasures" ("Angry Again", "99 Ways To Die" and the Alice Cooper cover "No More Mr. Nice Guy"), or Megadeth's (demo) debut "Killing Is My Business... And Business Is Good" (1984). Here's hoping that one of the labels steps up to give the fans a 2-disc mix including some of the songs left off this release as well as adding songs from "The World Needs A Hero" (2001), and the very heavy and underrated "The System Has Failed" (2004). "Capitol Punishment" is a good release, but it barely scratches the surface (4 stars).
HIDDEN TRACK!!!.......2006-07-23
This album may be lacking great songs, like WAKE UP DEAD for an example. But,there is something at the end of the album- a secret track! To find it, play through the last track. The track is a medley of songs from previous albums. The songs that make up the track are (in order) PEACE SELLS,ANARCHY IN THE U.K.,HOLY WARS,HANGAR 18,SYMPHONY OF DESTRUCTION,SWEATING BULLETS,TRAIN OF CONSEQUENCES,GO TO H**L,ANGRY AGAIN,TRUST,ALMOST HONEST,and CRUSH 'EM. makes you want it more, doesn't it?
EVERYBODY QUIT YOUR BITCHIN!.......2005-10-13
What is wrong with you people? It doesn't have this, it doesn't have that... bla bla bla... What no KILLING IS MY... shut up! You probably have the real albums anyway, no? Yeah, so whats your problem? The CD has what it has, get the real friggin albums. Theres no pleasing you as***les I swear to GOD!
Check out the brand new HITS package that just came out, maybe it has what you're looking for.
Me personally, I like this hits package better because it has the few tracks that I don't have on other discs. Like USE THE MAN. I basically only wanted that one but I don't like CRYPTIC WRITINGS so I bought this instead. I didn't sit there and bitch because CRYPTIC WRITINGS doesn't have TRAIN OF CONSEQUENSES on it. Get a purpose, jerks.
By the way, this one is out of print so you have to buy it used.
Great Sound but no "Foreclosure of a Dream?".......2005-08-16
I'll admit that I first became a fan after listening to their "Countdown To Extinction" album which I really enjoyed but I'd also have to admit that it's commercial too. I guess purists would say the same thing about Metalica's "Black" and Whitesnake's "1987" etc but I guess these guys have got to make money too.
I liked the sound quality of this disc although I must admit that this is not truly representative of Megadeth's entire life's work but that's okay as there are other discs like that out there for the purists. As for me, one who liked their "commercial" stuff and as a guitarist, especially Marty Friedman's shredwork and heck Dave Mustaine ain't too bad a player himself, this is a good enough cd for 3 stars.
The songs are quite good and "Crush 'Em" and "Peace Sells" are excellent tracks but I was left feeling that the band must have had more to them then just these 14 tracks.
Someday, I'll get the remastered "Countdown..." to remind me why I liked them in the first place.
My review for .... Capirtol Punishment.......2005-05-29
As far as song selection goes, It is awesome. Yes, i'll admit, they did leave off some awesome songs and what people are saying about this greatest hits are saying the same thing about Marilyn Manson's greatest hits which is ' including the bad songs and leaving out the good songs.' And I will say the same thing too. > these are specifically the songs that made up their career. I dont wanna see Last Rites(loved to deth) on here. They didn't even release this song. They should of included Devil's Island, but its still good without it. Overall, this is a good joining of hits. If you dont like it, I might have a solution for you. June 27 i think or something around there, a new Megadeth greatest hits will come out. But I bet some people will complain about that too.

Some of Megadeth's best.......2005-01-19
I'll be honest, I'm not a hardcore Megadeth fan. I'm not even a hardcore 80s rock fan. BUT... this cd is GREAT! It's one of the few CDs I can listen to without skipping a single track. Watch out with this version of the cd, though. It's ONE CD for $49.99. It technically only has one track that isn't on the "regular" release of this cd, too ("Wake Up Dead.") I haven't heard "Wake Up Dead," but I highly doubt it's worth the $40 extra dollars. "Punishment" is a mix of all the songs on the CD and is on the regular CD on track 14 after the regular song ("a hidden track"). 4 stars because of the price of this version.
A good collection........2001-04-11
Not their best, however. Their best is Rust In piece and Peac Sells, but this is a moderate collection of the Megadeth we grew up with and loved. I knew that Hanger 18 and Peace sells were going to be on the album, but no "Take No Prisoners?" However, the two new tracks really have begun my Megadeth crave. Megadeth has ginally gotten out of that "fans-like-us-so-we'll-change-our-style-of-music" trend that Metallica has fell in so deeply and, sadly, can't get out. Back to good ol' fashioned metal that reminds me of Countdown (I wonder why the song Countdown wasn't on the album) and Youthanmasia (though a few more from that album would be highly appricated) VIC RATTLEHEAD FOR PRESIDENT!
"The best of Megadeth - not a greatest hits album...".......2001-03-11
...this is the way Dave Mustaine (Vocalist and Guitarrist) described the first compilation after eight Megadeth albums were released. "It's not a greatest hits album, because if it were we should have put in it just five or six tunes; but we decided to compile simply the best of Megadeth...", according to these words Megadeth pretends to get through the fans with the latests singles and with some of the well-known thrashing metal tunes. Any fan would love this CD.
