Album Description
Cali MC/producer Oh No crafts an entire album of beats sampled from the catalog of Galt MacDermot (composer of the late-'60s smash musical HAIR.) With a formidable cast of guest MCs, it all adds up to a hip-hop album that transcends generations. Features A.G., Posdnous from De La Soul, Murs, Vast Aire and more.
Customer Reviews:
Gathering underground MC's with a lot of variety.......2006-09-16
The thing that got me to buy this was the outstanding guest list of featured MC's. This cd grew on me significantly, but I don't believe that it quite lives up to its high-falooting title. It's a nice listen nonetheless. Oh No is a very solid producer. He didn't become an instant favorite or anything, but his sounds are enjoyable and unique, even. The concept of using Galt McDermott samples is nice, but nothing to gawk in awe at.
Anyways, Oh No's got legends such as Posdnous (De La Soul), Wise Intelligent (Poor Righteous Teachers), Buckshot (Black Moon, BCC), and A.G. (D.I.T.C.) on here. I enjoyed Oh No's rap on the intro. The joints with Wordsworth (#9), Aloe Blacc (#10), and Cali Agents (#2) are the standouts. The album kinda sluffs off in the second half. The songs by Murs and Frank N Dank, respectively, are decent. The LMNO song was kinda tight too. This being said, if you are a fan of Oh No or of a handful of the MC's featured, this cd is worth the money.
Very, Very Good.......2006-08-28
If you like true hip hop, buy this one. Oh No dips into the recordings of composer Galt MacDermot for nearly 100% of the beats and samples which adds a lot of musical depth. Plus, lots of great guest MCs. Near classic right off the shelf.
You saw it comin'.......2006-08-10
For all of you who listen to real hiphop know by now that when it comes to stones throw you simply do not run the risk of buying isht hiphop lp's, and Oh No def does not break the mold, i hate to admit it but he will at some time rise above his older brother madlib (well not that i hate on Oh No, bcuz he is the isht) its just that apart from Kazi LP "The Plague" (u need this lp also) which he produced and of course Grand Agent colab it seems that the impact hes making is a lot faster and hotter than his bruv in such a short time. but check out the album phat beats dusty production and with two of my fave MC's Posdunos and AG and another up & coming (my opinion) Murs, what more persuasion do you need as a matter of fact if you dont feel this cd is worth buying just go out and buy Kris Kros's back catalogue.

Album Description
Tracy Grammer and her late partner Dave Carter were one of the most celebrated young acts in folk music. In just four years they released three critically-acclaimed albums, toured with Joan Baez and earned a solid following with their indelible live performances at festivals and venues all across North America. Despite Carter's sudden death in July 2002, Grammer's career as an interpreter and instrumentalist continues. "With the release of Flower Of Avalon, Tracy Grammer begins a new story while continuing to champion the songs of her former partner. While the album features 9 brilliant previously unheard Dave Carter songs, the spotlight is clearly on the gorgeous vocals and instrumental prowess of Tracy Grammer.

Grammer Continues to Carry Carter's Torch.......2007-05-05
Grammer continues to carry Carter's torch. She is his voice from beyond. This is a wonderful compilation of music that provides listers with an excellent example of Carter's songwriting ability. In "Flower of Avalon" Grammer takes Carter's lyrics to a bitter sweet culmination, creating for Carter a crowning achievement. Grammer's voice is passionate, powerful, and precise.
Better with each listen.......2007-02-02
I wasn't in love with this album from the first listen but now it is one of my favorites! Of course with anything Dave Carter writes, it takes a while to get to know the song and unravel its meaning :) Outstanding CD!!!
My new favorite CD, truly beautiful and touching.......2006-11-30
Tracy is coming to my town shortly, and a friend at work lent me her copy of this CD to hear what Tracy does. I'm buying my own copy at the show. I listened all the way through, started out to return the CD, but instead went back to my desk and listened again, every note of it, drinking it in and losing track of what I was working on. I think the last time I did that was in 1968 with Disreali Gears. It is only through the other reviews that I know who Dave Carter was, and his loss is such a shame, such beautiful writing.
Tracy Grammer does these marvelous songs more than justice. Her renditions are a fitting tribute to Carter's lyrics. In her voice I hear notes of Mary Black, a hint of Nanci Griffith, and overtones of Allison Kraus, while maintaining a voice of her own. Should be telling; Tracy holds her own in the harmonies with Mary Chapin Carpenter on this CD. I am usually a rock & blues listener but with an affinity for acoustic music like Chris Smither or Union Station, and this CD has simply touched me from first note to last like few others have. I completely love it.
Flower of Avalon Review.......2006-11-10
I bought this CD about 4 months ago and the more I listen, the more I like it. Tracy Grammer is an exceptional soprano and her backup musicians are extremely talented. The songs she performs (David Carter's music) are refreshing, interesting, and capture the imagination. If you like sopranos and like music in the folk style, you'll like this.
My first exposure to Grammer (and Carter).......2006-08-11
Though "Laughlin Boy" is theoretically the "single" on this album, my ears first poked up listening to our local PBS station play "Hey Ho". What a great indication that protest music was and is still alive and well in the USA. There's not a bad song on this album, though I have to admit that "Winter When He Goes" isn't one of my favorites. I would have liked to hear Carter working with her on "Hard to Make it"...seems as if it would have added to the "punch" of the song if the last line was sung by a male. My favorite, however, has to be "Mother I Climbed". OK, it's a downer, but it's beautiful, and the sentiments are perfect. I also love "Preston Miller" (reminiscent, in some ways, of "Cateye Willie" on an earlier album), and "Phantom Doll".
Carter's mastery of the language is evident on this album. He had a touch with alliteration that is deft, without being obvious.
After hearing this album, I immediately bought the three that they made together...and I'm anxiously awaiting her next.

Customer Reviews:
Doesn't get much better than this!.......2005-04-18
I described this album to a friend by saying it was kinda like Burl Ives singing Rock and Roll! Maybe that was a bit overstated because it's more folk/country than rock. Darrell is not only a talented songwriter but a gifted musician/storyteller as well. This is one outstanding CD...mellow, melodic...
getting 5 stars from England.......2004-11-14
Putting this album into any genre is a dangerous thing...he may be in Nashville these days but it's not just country....its all the wonderful things from all over that make this album. What I love about this is the fact that it's quality songwriting backed up by some great playing and delivery...and it's a great album to listen to from track 1 through to the end. I've had the cd for 4/5 days now and it's a joyful listen. Don't take my word for it...buy it yourself...you wont regret it!
Well-crafted songwriting.......2004-01-30
Songwriter Darrell Scott has had a fair run recently as a Nashville composer, providing hits for the Dixie Chicks, Sara Evans and Brad Paisley, to name a few. This is his first album on his own independent label, and while there's some striking material, there's also a slight air of self-indulgence as well (the average song length is about five minutes...) I liked the first couple of tracks a lot -- "East Of Gary" and "Uncle Lloyd" both explore the unglamourous side of the American working class ethos, and both are notable for their lack of Merle Haggard-ish "working man" posturing (a now-tedious trend in modern country). Scott handles the material with subtlety and skill, and both songs hit me the right way. Not sure why I wasn't really as taken with rest of the album... I guess it went down an overly crafted Greg Brown-ish folkie path or something -- the songs were too lofty, the picking got too glitzy, I'm not sure exactly what it was. Scott's voice is really nice, but his songs are best when he reins them in a bit. Still, this is definitely an album worth checking out -- Darrell Scott has a lot to offer fans of intelligently written Americana, so take my criticism with a grain of salt.
Can't live without!!!.......2004-01-11
I am a huge Darrell fan. I have all of his cd's and bought some, that he played on, just to here him play. This cd has a song for everyone. These songs have been shelved for 10 years and now they are getting there chance. I listen to it over and over. He is the best songwriter around. This cd is different than his others. He plays more electric guitar. These songs are so good. Here is one of my favorite lines out of the song "Six O'clock in the Morning" "Adam stood over Eden fair , While Eve slept he touched her soft hair, Waiting to catch the first train out of there at Six o'clock in the morning. The man can paint a picture and just put you where he wants you. He is Amazing . Please buy this cd. It will become one of your favorites.
Amazing Songwriter....You have to listen..........2003-10-17
Darrell Scott caught my attention immediately at the New Song Festival in West Virginia last summer. Since then, I've bought all of his albums and have had 2 more opportunities to see him play live. He is definitely one of our generations best songwriters. One of my friends claims that his imagery is at times just as good or better than Bob Dylan. Decide for yourself. His new album is just as good, but in a different way than all of his others. I love the baritone guitar and electric feel just as much as his more acoustic albums and I'm an acoustic player myself. Darrell has an extremely impressive list of successes already, but I feel this album may be his most successful. Look at his bio for a humbling experience. Chances are, you've already heard his songs played by other people without even knowing it. I'm going to stop rambling and let you decide for yourself what I'm talking about. Enjoy.

Rockin'.......2002-09-17
I only bought there CD because Dogstar had a track on it called "Your World" [which truly ROCKS!], but I found the whole CD to be really good.
Plus, it's for a good cause, so BUY IT!!
Inexpensive Way to "Taste" the Skills of Thespian Hypenates.......2001-11-02
Starting off funky, with Jeff Goldblum rat-skat-skattin about "bein freaky and unique-y", segueing into the barely contained irony of Russell Crowe lamenting fame in "The Photograph Kills," this album has a strong footing and I predict will have a popular following.
While there are a few tragic tracks -- the painfully wailed "tune" by Juliette Lewis (I never made it all the way through this one) and the overly e-nun-ci-a-ted song featuring Brad Pitt being prime examples -- the compilation is a keeper. Billy Bob Thornton's "Island Avenue" track was a pleasant suprise.
I am buying a second copy to give as a holiday present. You may follow in my footsteps after your own listen. Try it, buy it.
actors can be multitalented.......2001-06-15
As a huge 30 Odd Foot of Grunts fan (Russell Crowe's band), I immediately went out and bought this CD. Amazingly, many actors also have a talent for singing. I have kept up with Bruce Willis' singing career since Moonlighting, and I think he's really good. I had never heard Dogstar before, but I am beginning to like them. In my opinion, some actors/singers are better than the ones that are on Billboard's charts today (Eminem, Nelly, etc.).
"gonna drive the night straight thru, to Island Avenue".......2001-04-05
Well, I reviewed this cd something like five months ago. Now that I've had time to see how the replay value is, I feel like I can write a much stronger review for it. This is a really cool cd to own. First off, you get to hear some of your favorite actors doing songs that they love. While there are a few misses on here (Jeff Goldbloom's "Born Free'ky" just didn't do much for me) this compilation is well worth the cash. I really dug "Your World" by Dogstar and "Midtown" by Brad Pitt. That song just rocks. My personal favorite on the whole cd would have to be "Island Avenue" by Billy Bob Thornton. It's a hard song to describe but the cd is worth owning just for that track alone. A track originally penned by his late brother, Jimmy Don, "Island Avenue" is a very deep, emotional song with great, complex music and Billy Bob singing in his best rocker voice. He sings everything unbelievably smooth until the chorus kicks in, then he sings out in a very heart-felt, almost Springsteen-like, voice. Greatness.
Since buying this album back in April, I've listened to that one song maybe three times a day and I have yet to get tired of it. I've played it for friends who went off and bought the album just for "Island Avenue". The guitar playing (by Michael Shipp) is downright awesome. Very bluesy and Melodic. I also love the B3 organ which gives the whole thing a classic-rock kind of vibe. Check it out.
I had never been familiar with Russel Crowe's outfit, 30 Foot Odd of Grunts, but with "Photograph Kills", I'm tempted to pick up their album. The music may be somewhat simplistic, but he has a great voice and the lyrics are very solid and meaningful. If you've never heard Dogstar before, here's a great place to start. This cd has turned me onto a lot of great bands and it's well worth picking up.

Customer Reviews:
Space Reigns.......2004-07-03
I first heard the song "The Female Of The Species" from local radio station 98.7 Perfect 10. It sounded like some guy got badly hurt from a relationship but expressed it with dark humour. The song is very catchy, especially when I drive and need music to perk me up. So are the rest of the songs in this compilation, especially "Me & You Versus The World", "Money" and "Begin Again". The songs can be quite addictive as they continue to play in my head. The lyrics are baffling and at the same time delightful. Space didn't get as far as some established bands although they have produced British Top 10 hits. Perhaps this could be due to lower publicity hype and marketing efforts. But their infectious music should not be ignored.

The title says it all...........2004-11-07
...The third unheard. That last state in the tri-state that the nation does not know about. If you just looked at TV you think NY,NJ and Philly. CT for some reason was not always put on. Until I dicovered this tonight, I did not even know that this exsited. I recall Afrika Bambatta recounting the early days of hip-hop "spreading throughout the tir-state area," but I had not heard of or knew of any CT rappers from the early days, just the late 80,'s. I give it five stars just for them putting it out...
A Pure Party.......2004-10-16
Nice mix of Disco and Hip Hop.This one has every song is banging god bless the old school hip hop days from the beginning
This.If you want to here some good hip hop try listening to this.Bump this in your stereo imediately.-Good day
The Tri-State Hip Hop Circle is Complete.......2004-06-13
Congrats to Stone's Throw Records on their marvelous compilation! Any fan of the early days of Hip Hop, dating back to the days of the Suger Hill Gang, Fatback Band, and Afrika Bambaata will no doubt love this album. It really shows how Hip Hop all started in Connecticut and eventually slipped thru the cracks. Another lost treasure brought to the surface by Stone's Throw's Eothen Alapatt, who also executive produced the release of another lost album by a Connecticut native, Dooley O's Watch My Moves 1990, late last year. Keep up the good work and bravo!!!
Connecticut HIP HOP.......2004-06-05
The beats. The claps. The calls to "Come on" or "Get down" or "Check it out." The infectious vibrations, rumbles and urgent rhythmic raps. The references to pugilist poet Mohammed Ali. The bulging bass and trembling chords. The hyper hoots of "Ho-oh." The raw sound of pure early Hip Hop is as exhilarating and overwhelming as the recordings of young Elvis, or Billie Holiday on the radio, or Miles or Marvin Gaye at their most progressive, or any other genre you care to name. It's a sound which still packs immediacy, personality and a hearty party.

Product Description
Phil Woods & The Los Angeles Jazz Orchestra perform the great Woody Herman Band Second Herd Bebop charts from the late 1940s. The Los Angeles Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of trumpeter Ron Stout, is joined by alto sax legend Phil Woods and a host of LAs greatest jazz musicians including Ross Tompkins, Carl Saunders, Scott Whitfield, Andy Martin, Jerry Pinter, Kim Richmond and Joel Hamilton.
The opening moments of Keen and Peachy command instant excitement, quickly revealing the imprint of Woody Hermans explosive big bands. In the case of this live recording, the focus is on the spirit and direction of his remarkable Second Herd, a sizzling band soaked in the vanguard of bebop inspired by gate breakers Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, and Max Roach.
Considering the engaging music the Second Herd represented and sadly its short list of studio recordings, it is notable that at long last its seldom heard/unheard music is embodied in a CD. Consequently, Ken (Poston) judiciously assembled the Los Angeles Jazz Orchestra under the capable leadership of trumpeter Ron Stout who as a Herdsman from 1984-1990 has answered promptly many a call to participate in performances and activities connected with Woody Herman.
Phil Woods performance on this CD reflects his status as a celebrated jazz soloist who is an unrivaled alto saxophonist. His solos are models of surprise and marvel of configuration. He is as fully equipped as any musician can possibly be, possessing acute ears, nimble fingering, a distinctive sound and an inexhaustible repertoire of songs he taps to lace his story telling.
And the audience had a super time because the band was groovin. Everyone had a ball swinging! The Unheard Herd has, indeed, been heard.

Customer Reviews:
Can't miss with Phil in a big band setting.......2007-07-05
A live performance by a hot band with plenty of good soloists playing great charts - that's enough reason to get this CD even if Phil Woods wasn't on it. But I'm glad he is, because it's always a treat to hear him in a big band setting. I had the pleasure of seeing him perform with the U.S. Air Force Airmen of Note in late 2006, and this recording brings back that experience vividly.
The music in this set swings, bops, and roars. The only time it slows down is for the powerful interpretation of the ballad "My Old Flame" as only Phil could do it (accompanied just by piano). Musically, the only thing I didn't like on the album was trumpeter Carl Saunders' scat singing on "We The People Bop." Generally, I like scat singing, but this one is done in a style I call spit-in-your-face scat - suffice it to say that this guy is no Jon Hendricks. Fortunately, this track features some good solos, including some nice clarinet work by Kim Richmond.
The CD includes some talking passages, both song introductions and storytelling. The good news is that two of the segments are set aside in their own tracks, so you don't have to include them on your iPod if you just want the music. The bad news is that there are three more segments that are not set apart from the music tracks. They're only a minute or so each, but they're song introductions that are tacked onto the end of the previous track, which I've always found inappropriate. This can be annoying to random-play listeners who are stuck with hearing long introductions to tunes that will not follow.
Despite these minor quibbles, this is an enjoyable album, a good addition to any collection of alto sax and/or big band music.
Good, but..........2006-08-13
The guys who made this record obviously love Woody Herman and Phil Woods - with good reason. Both made jazz history and maintained high standards for many years.
I love 'em both, too - but not this record. Phil, to my sorrow, has lost a step. It's not surprising, due to the passage of time and the depredations of disease. On the Unheard Herd, he
seems to depend on bop cliches (his own and others') in his solos, the exception being on "My Old Flame", a duet between Woods and pianist Ross Tompkins. Phil displays his passion and fluency on the ballad.
The band is first-rate, well-rehearsed and tight. Shorty Rogers' chart of "More Moon" and the Gerry Mulligan arrangement of "Yardbifd Suite" are excellent. The sidemen solo with vary degrees of effectiveness.
But, somehow, "Unheard Herd" falls short of my expectations. Nice, but forgettable. If you want to hear vintage Woods in a big band setting, try any of his recordings with the Quincy Jones band of the early 60's...especially the one recorded llve at Newport.
The "Unheard Herd" Must Be Heard .......2006-04-01
CD producer Graham Carter consistently comes up with inspired ideas. One of his most recent was to team the premiere alto saxophonist soloist Phil Woods with the crack Los Angeles Jazz Orchestra playing the bebop charts from Woody Herman's famed Second Herd. Have the band led by Ron Stout, a Herman alumnus with a deep understanding of the Herman sound. Then present the package in concert before an appreciative audience at Ken Poston's 2004 "Springsville" Festival. Top it off by recording the proceedings for Carter's excellent JazzedMedia label (which produced Woods' stunning "Groovin' With Marty Paich" recording from the same venue). If you sense that all the ingredients are here for an inspired jazz recording, you are right.
Woods seems to have found a real comfort level and plays with an inspired sense of creativity in his recent recordings for Jazzed Media. This one is no exception. He sails through these charts with verve and enthusiasm, bursting forth from the ensembles with great joy and vigour in his solos. While Woods always plays at a high level, there is a real treat in hearing him dig into his bebop roots, something producer Carter seems to have perceived.
These charts are from the book of Woody's "Second Herd" and some are fairly familiar ("Keen and Peachy"; "More Moon"), while some are more obscure ("Man, Don't Be Ridiculous;" "Yardbird Suite;" and the roaring blues, "Boomsie" which closes the program in fine fashion). The chief arranger is Shorty Rogers, but there are also contributions here by Neal Hefti and Gerry Mulligan.
Needless to say, these big band bebop charts swing hard and are full of solo space, not only for Woods, but for the band's other fine soloists, including trombonists Scott Whitfield and Andy Martin, tenor saxophonist Bill Trujillo, reed man Kim Richmond (whose clarinet solo is particularly impressive on the small group version of "We The People Bop") and trumpeters Stout, Bob Summers and Carl Saunders (who also scats on "We the People"). In fact, nearly all the band members get to solo at some point in the one hour program. The big band charts are generally of the straight ahead and shouting variety, but the program is highlighted in the center by a reflective duo version of "My Old Flame" featuring Woods and pianist Ross Tompkins.
Along the way, Woods and Stout interject some humorous spoken jazz stories, which add further enjoyment to an already uplifting and heart-warming program. This well-recorded CD is highly recommended to all Phil Woods fans and fans of straight-ahead big band jazz. It's not hard to imagine this one showing up on several best-of-2006 lists.
