Other post-WWII Chicago bluesmen are better known, but the work of Elmore James holds up as well as any of theirs. If he never had the technical accomplishment of, say, Earl Hooker, he did have as much depth of emotional expression as Muddy Waters; just listen to the sweetness of "I Need You" or the pain of "It Hurts Me, Too." The Sky Is Crying: The History of Elmore James contains some of the most important work of a man who still reigns as the king of slide guitar; anyone who wears a bottleneck today owes a debt to James. Highlights include Robert Johnson's "Dust My Broom," which James made his signature tune, as well as the title track, which contains some of the sweetest licks in blues history. --Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
One of the greatest collections ever!!!.......2007-05-05
Elmore James is underrated--period. He was as much of a pioneer and original artist of electric blues as Muddy Waters, yet timing, connections, and probably his health problems seemed to diminish his stature in the blues world in the 1950's and early '60's somewhat, at least compared to Muddy Waters and Howling Wolf. Over time, we have seen his work to be just as influential as Muddy's, and probably more than Wolf's. I admire Muddy Waters and the Wolf and respect their supreme positions as kings of Chicago blues, but I actually enjoy listening to Elmore James more. His singing is second only to Son House in sheer terms of emotional intensity. I love his quivering vocal vibrato that so perfectly fits the beat to "Dust My Broom." And his slide playing is without question some of the most influential music ever. The legendary Duane Allman studied him--need I say more?
This is a perfect CD for those interested in sampling Elmore's music for the first time. Every song is a winner. You won't be disappointed!!
Excellent.......2007-04-11
I love blues music and this is one of my faviorte artist. This cd does a good job with song selection and its just an awesome piece of music. The price is a steal as well.
The Sky May Be Crying But Elmore Makes Me Happy.......2007-03-27
If you want a slick full blown stereo recording of Elmore you may be disappointed, but if you are a true blues brother you will appreciate that they have reached back in time for some early Elmore. Dust My Broom - the classic standard of Elmore - has a better sound later and by other artists...but man this is Elmore when Elmore wasn't even hardly known...dig it and appreciate it. The Sun Is Shining and The Sky Is Crying seems to have been covered by everybody. Why, they are true Chicago Electrified Blues Standards. I loved T.V. Mamma because my main man "Big Joe" Turner is backed up by Elmore and that classic distorted slide guitar of his....loved it. Madison Blues has a completely different sound than most of the later covers especially by the white blues bands...the original is the best. Other favorites were I Can't Hold Out, Shake Your Money Maker (man whats blues dude hasn't done this one), and Rollin and Tumblin. Elmore was the 2nd blues man I ever heard..circa 1958 on KATZ a.m. and Dave Dixon is St. Louis, Mo. He was one 1st I ever heard and still is one of the best in my opinion...his slide guitar set the trend for people like Hound Dog Taylor and many others. When he gets that sucker wailing, it puts chills up and down my back. Elmore James is one wailing cat...makes me feel like I am in some smoky, black club back in the late 50s and early 60s enjoying real music when Paul Anka and Annette Funicello were on the white stations singin bubble gum music...buy Elmore and be a BIG FAN just like ole Joliet Jayle the Bluze Brother ... Rock-n-roll, boogie woogie, rollin and tumblin all night long!
Listen as His Early Hits Mature Before Your Ears!.......2006-11-16
If you are a fan of the famous Elmore James hit, "Dust My Broom", you may be mildly disappointed by the version included on the CD, as it is a very early recording. But don't be shaken by this minor observation! The song is - after all - still the great "Dust My Broom"! See the CD titled "Blues Masters - Slide Guitar Classics" for an outstanding version of that same song.
That is NOT to say that this CD is disappionting, by any means! You will be introduced to many of his less-known songs, and you will hear his guitar style, as well as his voice, mature with his later recordings.
One thing that you will walk away with is a stronger sense of the early roots of electric blues, which did not always keep proper time, and was often plagued with poor recording techniques. Nonetheless, Elmore's guitar gets meaner, and his voice gets sweeter over time.
If you're a fan of early blues, if you need to understand Elmore's music from your PERSONAL perspective (rather than reading some music critic's opinion), if you love the eerie, yet powerful, electric slide than this CD is certainly for you.
Slide it into the CD player, dim the lights, and feel the blues!
Why did I give it get 5 stars? For delivering just what it promised; the history of Elmore James.
One of the Greatest.......2006-10-04
Outside of those really knowledgable about blues and some of the classic rockers, Elmore James seems to not be extremely well-known; he's hardly a household name... but HE SHOULD BE! Elmore's slide playing is among the best and most influential ever, but, as another reviewer noted, he is a VERY good, expressive, and passionate singer. Elmore poured every ounce of his soul into every note he played and every note he sang and his passion translates well onto record; as evidenced by this fabulous collection. It is a real tragedy that he passed away so young, as he was truly one of the most talented musicians to ever walk this earth. I'll bet the sky was crying the day that ole Elmore died, if I would've been alive, I probably would have cried too.

Customer Reviews:
Oh dear...they've taken their eye off the ball.......2007-01-08
This is not much like their first album (which was a mostly clever, sometimes ham-handed combination of operatic arias and modern electronic instrumentation).
But Shine is pretty much the same ethno-electronica that was pervasive throughout the 90s. Think Deep Forest, Anubian Nights, Enigma, B-Tribe, and even Sting's "Desert Rose". Yawnnnnnnnnnnnn.
Their first album was good mostly because of its orginality (operatic arias are definitely a challenge), but any old fool can slap a "cool" Middle Eastern chant over a modern beat.
What bugs me about both albums is that they don't maintain that singularly operatic quality--it seems to be a sonic delicacy reserved only for a few tracks.
So, with a very few exceptions, this album is a bit contrived.
Stunningly beautiful music.......2004-11-29
I would describe this music as a mellow and unusal mix of music where Enya meets Maria Callas, and I am a fan of both, so that's a good thing. It is so good that Billboard Music called it the best classical crossover of the year!
I would call this music techno opera scene from the future with beautiful opera singing, just to give you an idea of what this music is like! Also, the singer from the Fifth Element soundtrack, Inva Mula sings the song "Mon Amour".
Also singing on this cd is a singer named Shakila. She sings on "Kokab" and "Khodoya". These three are my favorite tracks. Though the cd in whole is a joy to listen to.
We'll say that "Operatica-Shine" succesfully bridged the Middle East to Europe via southern Spain.
So if you're a nu music dj, pick up this cd, so you can really spin an eclectc mix of music - Savannah Skye aka DJ Dakini-NYC...
Better then R&B.......2004-04-16
My wife and I are always looking for new music to cuddle up to, while either watching the sunset, or getting a little heated. I think this album is a great replacement for Barry White, or some other R&B that people often equate with mood music.
These sounds will actually get your heart pounding and blood pumping without forcing you to constantly skip over songs that just get too rowdy.
Very good, yet not comparable to Diva Dance.......2004-03-12
Let me start out by saying that i love this cd. i bought it thinking that it would be like the song Diva Dance from the Fifth Element. It is most certainly one of my favorite cd's but it is nothing like the Diva Dance song. All of the tracks are much slower, focusing more on the opera part, as opposed to the techno/pop. i would still give this cd a splendid 4 out of 5 stars, but i would just like to get across the point that it doesn't have the type of songs that are advertised. thanks.
Opera Today.......2003-08-24
I just bought Operatica:Shine. It is my favorite CD, I strongly recomend it to enyone who enjoys opera! If you like "THE DIVA DANCE" in The Fifth Element you will love this CD!

Customer Reviews:
Amazing!.......2007-02-13
I really loved this collection of extremely odd songs, from the Colonel and friends. Many reasons, first Claypool's bass is so thriving and jumping and jossling around in every song, that its hard for me to contain myself, but i will. anyway, i just love the musicianship of all the musicians taking part in Claypool's side project, I've never really listened to Primus before, but im a huge Bucket, Brain, Bernie fan and i can easily say that there at their best in this. Claypool gives the songs a lot more vibe and great tone, the production is very good i might add too. Though many fans don't like this one, i just can't see how they don't like it, it's so amazing and "different" from anything i've ever heard any band play on any cd i own, i just love it. highly recommended for fans of Buckethead, and fans of avant-garde weird fusion rock funk.
more like 3.75 for an amazing combination that doesn't always click together.......2007-01-21
Follow this math:
75% of this group is 60% of the Praxis lineup that probably made one of the most amazing albums of ALL TIME--_Transmutation_. Combine this with 1/3 of Primus, and you get Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains.
Just listing the RELEVANT resumes of the lineup of this group would take up far more space and time than I'm inclined to write right now. Fair to say that the names connect to such bands as Primus, Funkadelic, Guns 'n' Roses, and all of these guys have hooked up with Bill Laswell at one point or another, but one thing that is clear is that you have a LOT of groundbreakers. Aside from the way Les Claypool reinvented the whole fretboard and possibilities of bass, and how Bernie Worrell brought keyboards into the space age, and the fact that anthropologists will still be studying the Buckethead phenomena for centuries, these four (including Brain) sound like a dream combination. And for songs like the phenomenal instrumental "Elephant Ghost" and "Tyranny of the Hunt" and the incredibly redneck "Hip Shot from the Slab," they all come together for unbelivable sounds.
But sometimes the personalities step in the way of the playing. Claypool, bless his heart, has an affinity for promoting the myth of Bucketheadland, but it lets the KFCed one setp out a little too much from the group, and the song becomes disjointed. In the Praxis days, Worrell, Buckethead and Brain fused into and amazing sound that used the best of everyone while letting no one take away from the essence of the song, but Bernie Brains can't quite retain the same magic.
Wow this is soooo under rated. What a jam of an LP.......2006-06-16
This LP is sooooo under rated. This is where Les Claypool takes off after primus and other projects after that. The whole band works so great together. Bernie Worrell - Keyboards is out standing! Buckethead working the Guitar is trippy. Long time pal Bryan "Brain" Mantia from Primus thumps out the tones on drums. Along with good olde Les on bass. This (Elephant Ghost) song is so toe tapping it's head bobbing and dance grooving. This is one great jam that the greater of the world should hear. Hell I cant really get past Elephant Ghost(Bernie Worrell - Keyboards is toe rific!). I listen to it over and over. Get one of the live cds' too c2b3live.
I want to knock that eyeball out of the sky..........2006-04-29
I got what i wanted with this purchase: great music from great musicians. This is a supergroup that is into the music more than the money. But I really enjoy their live music available at c2b3live dot com, which is stupendous. I have a copy of their live show at The Catalyst and it's real and it's spectacular. Not to dis this fine ensemble of jams including the origin of Buckethead, Thai Noodles, and Tyranny Of The Hunt. I love The Big Eyeball In The Sky b/c it speaks the truth about big brother media inc. Great anthems for dubya-haters (Junior, 48 hours) on this disc, but I still recommend downloading a live show or ten. In all, this is a superb, funky jam. Can't really go wrong with these guys. Their music is refreshing, fun, and unique: I laughed, I cried, I wet my pants.
PRIMUS SUCKS!!!!! Oooops, this is not P r i m u s.......2005-11-29
Actually, this group is probably what Claypool assembled to get HIS best sound out. As we all know who Clayppol and Buckethead are. For the reviewer who described the the band, and naming Bernie Worrell "The Organist" (and spelled it wrong too!). Bernie Worrell is the BUZZ behind P-FUNK! GET IT RIGHT, SON!!! Good music, Buckethead is a good guitarist (uh oh, I can just feel those KFC heads clucking @ me). Everyone has talked about Claypool and Buckethead, Buckethead and Claypool. Les is a phenomenal bassist. When you hear that slaping, you know it's the Colonel Claypool. 4 out 5 ain't bad!

Album Description
Here, in The Romantic Guitar of Liona Boyd, the loving hands of this renowned classical guitarist interprets some of the most beautiful compositions with the tender touch of a true romantic. The First Lady of the Guitar explores the melodic expressions of romance written by some of the greatest composers of our age, including the prolific and inspired Ms. Boyd herself. We often label this music "easy listening" - but the more astute will consider it rather an example of Liona's tasteful articulation and subtle ear for emotional nuance.
Customer Reviews:
Classical guitar muzak.......2006-05-22
Elevator muzak: soft versions of already soft music, such as showtunes and soundtracks. Just add a dash of classical guitar noodling, and you get this recording.
As a fan and student of classical guitar, I feel this recording does the instrument a disservice.
Liona Boyd meets Lawrence Welk.......2005-12-31
Simply put, it's corny and well below Liona's status. She must have produced this out of demand, from someone! It might as well be a spattering of Liona with Mantovani and Lawrence Welk!
Crank this one up 'til your mobile home rocks!
A Liona Boyd fan - still!
For Your Quiet Evenings........2003-01-23
I've had this album for years and I break it out every now and then. It's a very tasteful album and chock full of good tunes done extremely well by Liona. My favourite is 'Vaya Con Dios'. The piano complements the guitar so well. Give this album a whirl and together with Mancinis' 'As Time Goes By', you never know what'll happen.

Excellent fingerpicking folk style "american standard" history.

Customer Reviews:
York is one of the wonderful modern guitarists........2004-04-30
I am a classical guitarists too. Though I may be a young man, I tend to like modern guitar sounds than old guitar sounds like F.Sol or Tarrega etc. I like special tecniques that have not been made ever. But I always like all the modern guitarists. The most favorite guitarist is R.dyens. I like his unique rythm and melodies and high tempo sounds. A. York is my favorite guitarists too.
In a CD, I chanced to listen to Sunburrst, I was tempted with the high tempo sounds and blight melody and unique bass topping.
But in addition to such songs, he can write slow ballade songs too. The ballade is good too.
But in Japan, his guitar score peace is a little high price. If it have possible, I wish that the publishers make song books.
Anyway, A.York is a new age revolutional gutarist that blow new fresh wind to classical guitar genle.
Thank you for reading poor English.
One Guitarist's Tour de Force.......2004-01-09
There are two modern guitarist who share the honors for being the best of today's masters of the classical guitar - Andrew York and Scott Tennant. Tennant is a bit better technically, but I consider York the more 'musicianly' of the two. In a large part that is because York has proven himself the more willing to try new approaches and create is own compositions. And when he feels it necessary he is equally at home in the world of steel strings and electric pickups. Perfect Sky is an album designed to demonstrate exactly those facets of York, and by any measurement, is completely successful.
Nine of the thirteen compositions on this CD are original to York. While they have a New Age sound to them, carefull listening shows that the technical work behind his clean melodies sets him well apart from standard fare. Spend some time listening to the neck work on Andecy or the counterpoint in Green Galliard and you will see what I mean. Each piece has special moments of brilliance, but what stands out for me is Yorks strong sense of melody, which never seems to desert him. Two of my favorites are Perfect Sky and Muir Woods, two experiments in the use of jazzy chord progessions.
York's arrangement of Guaraldi's Linus and Lucy is a pure whirlwind of technical work. Every time I hear the harmonic arpeggio's I get exceedingly jealous - these require a level of precision that is totally out of my fumble fingered league. But this entire piece is pure showing off, a perfect demonstration of a master guitarist for who style is a choice, not a constraint. Then there is the complete believability of the Nutcracker ballet piece and the hysterical complexity of Couperin's Les Barricades Misterieuses.
And the list goes on and on. There is literally no mischosen or misplayed work on this album. Something to marvel at in an age which has become sadly accepting of shoddy corners. York has other albums that demonstrate his classical side (and let's not forget his and Tennant's membership in the Los Angeles Guitar Quartett) but Perfect Sky is the album if you are looking for a deeper look into Andrew York as a musican. Highly recommended.
NOTE: York CD on new label, GSP.......1999-07-05
Since its original release, Andrew York's "Perfect Sky" has been re-released on GSP, the same label which released his next CD, "Denouement". But not only the label has changed; York has added the piece "Andecy" (which appears on the Windham Hill label guitar sampler CD) to "Perfect Sky" and eliminated a song, as well as changing the CD artwork to more appropriately reflect the title. (The new CD cover, for example, features the guitarist beneath a clear and sunny blue sky.) Though "Andecy" is a solid piece, its addition does not make or break the CD, which remains an incredibly diverse and beautiful collection of songs by a guitarist (then-fresh from his studies at USC in the mid-1980s) who can both amaze and inspire listeners.
York Approaches Perfection.......1998-11-20
A beautiful collection of pieces arranged for the guitar, "Perfect Sky" stands out as proof that Andrew York is the master of the six-string domain. He combines incredible technical skill with both compositional and arranging talent. The opening track, "Sunburst" (covered by both John Williams and Christopher Parkening, and re-titled "Jubilation" on a recent Christmas album), played on a steel string guitar, demonstrates his compositional skill as well as his well-maintained chops, evidenced by the "burst" of speed at the song's conclusion. The album's most catchy tune, Vince Guaraldi's "Linus & Lucy", displays the playful, familiar bass line simultaneously with the melody, showcasing York's fretboard facility (that's right, it's ONE guitar). The song ends magnificently with a dazzling array of Jaco Pastorius-inspired harmonics. The album is an eclectic one, but York manages to keep a sort of identity throughout, never alienating the listener. Almost a decade after its release, "Perfect Sky" sounds as timeless as ever -- as all great music should. (Other highlights include "Green Galliard" and Tchaikovsky's "Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy".)

Celtic Music for Guitar by Allan Alexander contains 31 songs transcribed for guitar mostly originating from Ireland and Scotland as well as three charming original pieces written in the Celtic style by Allan. Listen to the haunting melodies of the Irish Harper O'Carolan, take a musical journey with dances that were written more than 400 years ago and experience Celtic traditional music in a solo guitar setting by one of the masters of this musical genre.

For the Aspiring Celtic Guitarist..........2005-08-07
I must admit, this review is of both the CD and the accompanying book of transcriptions. The selection is quite unique, ranging from the renaissance lute manuscripts of Scotland purely traditional (and much more recent-most of the jigs, reels, and airs of today's Celtic music might sound primal, but they date from the late 1700's-early 1800's)tunes such as 'The Butterfly'. Most of the work-about three quarters-is taken from the work of 17th century blind Irish harpist Turlough O'Carolan. O'Carolan's work has a distinctive sound for the most part, equal parts baroque and Irish folk, with a few songs leaning strongly one way or the other. So be warned, this is NOT the Celtic music you would hear from traditional groups such as the Cheiftains or Altan, nor is it classical or baroque in the style prefered by Bream or Williams. It is instead a blend of, to me, the best of both genres, combining the sophistication and delicacy of early classical music with the haunting soulfulness of Celtic music. It is also a glimpse at the earliest known examples of music from Scotland and Ireland, predating the dance numbers that are recorded more today.
As a guitarist, I thoroughly enjoyed working through the book. The selections are all beautiful and impressive to hear, yet many are very, very easy to perform. Most of my playing has been acoustic rock and folk with a flatpick, so I was very pleasantly suprised to find that some of my favorite pieces from the recording were not only within my grasp (after a reasonable amount of practice!) but even primer-like, the notes by the author making each song learned a lesson in technique. The transcriptions are also in tab, which is a big plus for me and I'm sure many others. It IS good to be able to read music, I suppose (I can decipher, myself, but not sight read), but standard notation was not designed for fretted instruments, and anyway, tab was always traditionally used lutes by composers such as J S Bach, anyway, so can even be considered more 'correct' for the guitar. Just be aware that the tunes here are more archaic than what is normally heard. Tony McManus wannabes will have to go elsewhere, I'm afraid.
Excellent........1999-04-04
An incredible recording. The music is rhythmic and driving. The arrangements and original compositions are exciting. This is something for lovers of Celtic music who want some originality while still enjoying the classic celtic melodies.

Excited about the Psycho Desperado.......2002-04-10
The title cut of the "Endless Sky" CD is our first experience with Chuck Pyle's music from an NPR program. We were immediately and completely mesmerized by the melody, the lyrics, and his artistry on the accoustical guitar. It was music that all at one time was "new and exciting" and "remarkably comfortable". We purchased "Endless Sky" and two other CD releases immediately from [an on-line retailer] and enjoy them as endlessly as the Western skies and and forever thoughts his music evokes when listening. "Your Life In Love With Mine" will etch into your heart forever, "Akasha Wind" will play in your dreams, "Keepers of the Earth" will give honest responsibility to your faith, and "Rio Rey" will let you feel like you are sitting with great friends and filled with joy when you are just driving home from work! We ordered "Affected By The Moon" tonight, and have been enjoying, the music of "Endless Sky" for a few months, and hope you also will be able to enjoy "Keepin' Time By the River", and "Camel Rock". Our hopes are to see him perform live.. and our greater hopes are that others will be fortunate to enjoy his voice, his music, and his unique and compelling, exciting and satisfying style. For those who know him, his music will always free their souls and release their stresses. For those of you who will be a first time listeners, you will finally find an artist who gives you that personal touch that rarely is found with the super nova packaged artisans that are promoted but only deliver glitz, nothing more. Chuck Pyle is pure joyful music and you will find that it is YOU who will shine with listening enjoyment and a satisfying comfort that holds you like all of nature. We recommend "Endless Sky" as a wonderful first or continuing collection of Chuck Pyle!
RIDIN' TALL IN A ZEN-GALLON HAT..........2001-07-02
Chuck Pyle is an absolute treasure in American music. His carefully crafted, intelligent songs get into your mind as well as into your toe (just try not to tap your foot to some of these), and they leave a gentle mark.
Working loosely in the genre of acoustic western swing, Pyle shows through his writing that he has respect for many styles of music, and he's not at all shy about letting them show. Folk, country, jazz, blues, swing -- all of these forces are at work here, and to wonderful advantage. Chuck Pyle is a true original -- he sounds like no one else. He's not some delusional would-be cowboy trying to channel Bob Wills or Gene Autry -- he's his own man, and he's as honest about the things that move him as any writer working today.
Every disc I've heard by Chuck has been full of great songs, chosen and recorded well -- this one has to be my favorite. There's not a single wasted track here -- every one of these songs paints a memorable picture of a feeling or person or place that Pyle has seen or experienced, and we come away from this cd with the feeling that we've experienced them as well.
'Rio Rey' begins the set with a look at the light and colors of a beautiful place in New Mexico that is favored by artists for those attributes -- 'Endless sky' is one of Chuck's many love songs to the Western landscape. The mood changes dramatically and effectively with 'Gypsy minor', filled with musical echoes of the soul of Romany. 'Everyday now' is one of the most beautiful love songs you'll hear anywhere. Showing his respect for the good work of other fine writers, Pyle turns in a really nice job on L. J. Booth's wonderful song 'Akasha wind'. 'The winter of our affair' is a touching look back at a treasured memory, done in the style of a classic jazz ballad. Chuck's 'metronome thumb' (you'll understand this reference if you're ever fortunate enough to see him perform live) kicks back in with 'Moonglow rising', another paean to the gorgeous land- and sky-scapes of the American West. On 'Keepers of the earth', Chuch delivers a heart-felt anthem for the environment and our responsibilities to it -- without sounding 'preachy' even for a moment.
There are several discs available by this fine performing singer-songwriter -- if you've never heard him, start here and work your way through them. None of them will let you down. Pyle's style is a finely crafted one -- this is Western music, without a doubt, but without any of the maudlin attributes of Nashville country music. Chuck Pyle sings from the heart as well as the mind and spirit, and his music can touch us in all of those places.
That's a rare thing.
Smooth, slow and soft.......2000-01-16
Chuck Pyle has one of the most relaxing, soothing sounds going today. His acoustic guitar playing is excellent and his voice is smooth and steady. My favorites in this album are "Sailing" and "Gypsy Minor". This is the type of album I like to listen to at work to block out the noise of the world and remind me that there is more to life than work. I highly recommend this album to everyone who enjoys good acoustic guitar music with a slow deliberate pace and ballads that speak to the ordinary life.

I had the chance to hear Burning Sky perform live recently and find their acoustical native sound to be inspiring! All the musicians are very talented and come up with great music. I can recommend this group to anyone.
Burning Sky music for native Amer. flute/guitar/percussion.......2003-01-26
Can't recommend anybody to spend money for this CD. After reading all the fine reviews and having listened to Burning sky Enter the Earth, I was very disappointed to listen to this album of uninspired "elevator music". Rhythms are unnoteworthy, music is fair. It's just not inspired or inspiring. Enjoyed Enter the Earth much more and highly recommend it.

I purchased this CD while on vacation in Arizona several years ago. Taking in the sounds of this CD with my ears while taking in the ancient Native American ruins of Arizona with my eyes was a spiritual experience that I never had before or since. The instumentation on this album is excellent. Recommended for anyone who wants to listen to some great Native American music.

Album Description
Originally released in 1998, the new SPV Super Value edition of Sky Of Avalon has been remastered by Uli Jon Roth and contains a bonus video track and an all new booklet with rare photos and liner notes by Uli John Roth.
Uli Jon Roth is without doubt one of the most eminent and influential guitarists of the international music scene. Be it as a long-time member with the Scorpions, founder and mastermind of his own band Electric Sun or as a solo artist, whose brilliant symphonic rock concept Sky Of Avalon caused a stir with its exciting melange of classical music and rock: the musician from Hanover has already had a lasting influence on the music world.
In 1993 Roth made a name for himself in the classic crossover sector as the musical director of an extremely successful production called `Symphonic Rock For Europe', which was broadcast by the German TV channel WDR. As part of the production, his first complete symphony Europa Ex Favilla was performed by almost one hundred artists from the Brussels Symphonic Orchestra, together with a large choir and a rock band. The theme was taken up again in 1995, when Roth's Puccini treatment Bridge To Heaven - performed by vocalist Klaus Meine with Roth on guitar - was celebrated during the great José Carreras Christmas Gala in Leipzig. Since leaving the Scorpions, Roth repeatedly became the talking point in the rock genre. In 1991 U.J. Roth, undisputedly Thee German authority when it comes to authentic rock interpretations, was asked to take on the musical direction of the WDR TV special A Different Side Of Jimi Hendrix. The result was a moving TV spectacle, with Roth alongside Jack Bruce (Cream), Simon Philips (Toto, The Who, Bob Dylan among others), Jule Neigel, Randy Hansen, Zeno and Peter Bursch performing a fascinating repertoire of Hendrix' compositions, which was praised on an international level. Roth dedicated the concert to Monika Dannemann, Jimi Hendrix' last girlfriend and later Roth's partner for over twenty years before her tragic death in 1996.
