beautiful music, excellent voice.......2006-11-06
I believe this is a wonderful CD and you will enjoy it any time. It combines different rithms and Marta's voice is incredible. I love all the songs in the CD.
Songs from the heart.......2006-11-03
I became aquainted with Marta Gomez after hearing her song in the Putamayo CD - Women of Latin America. Looking for more of her work, this was the 1st one I purchased, and I'm glad I did. The combination of her sweet voice with the simple yet full of wisdom lyrics (granted, you have to understand the language) make Cantos de Agua Dulce unbeatable.
Just a note on the name, it should be Songs of the Fresh Water. Similarly the English translation of the lyrics on her web site could be improved a bit.
cantos de agua dulce.......2006-03-01
I like her songs because the thems and her voice that have a unique and sensual expression.
beautiful voice.......2005-08-22
I heard Marta Gomez live in some basement of the Jewish Museum in New York City in July, 05. She sounded like an angel to me and this CD doesn't loose that sound. Good music for background during a dinner party or hanging out at home with my sister.
You can't go wrong with Cantos De Agua Dulce.......2005-08-03
I heard a review of this CD on NPR and ordered it the same day. From beginning to end, it's easy on the ears... Marta's voice is pure and angelic and perfectly supported the sophistically simple play of her band - everything is clear as a bell. I don't understand or speak Spanish and that, to me, is part of the magic - one can revel in the joy of the music itself. On the other hand, my wife does understand most of the lyrics and loves this CD too. We've both given copies of it to family and friends. Throw Cantos De Agua Dulce in your car's CD player and drive. Who know's where you'll end up? But you'll enjoy the journey.... you can't go wrong.

Customer Reviews:
Great Reference CD!.......2006-01-09
This is a great compilation, CD, along with Bride's Guide to Wedding Music Volume I, to use as a reference for some of the more popular wedding songs, such as Trumpet Voluntary, Vivaldi's Spring from the Four Seasons, Trumpet Tune and Canon, i.e. Pachelbel's Canon. All of the musicians are generally superb, and the sound quality is very good. However, this is most useful if you are playing the CD at your wedding, or using it as a reference CD to talk over with an organist, a string quartet, etc. I only gave it four stars based on practicality, not on quality. If it were just quality, I would give it five stars. I purchased this CD since I am in the process of making my own wedding CD (I am a professional, freelance violinist), and this was nice to listen to, even just as background music for dinner.
Interesting musical selections, but ..........2005-01-06
As the other reviewer noted, one doesn't have to be getting married to enjoy this CD...and the musical selections are certainly interesting, even eclectic. I have to wonder, however, who picked these out with what criteria since at least a couple of these melodies are not traditional wedding tunes. By this I mean the lovely arrangement of Michael Praetorius' "In Dulci Jubilo." In his home country of Germany, where I used to live until a couple of years ago, this is a Christmas carol, sung at Christmas Eve services throughout the land. The lyrics aren't especially suited to any sort of wedding, really. Unless you're marrying in December, I personally would steer clear of this song. And if the wedding's in June and you have European guests, don't be surprised if eyebrows are raised when this melody is played!
A Nice Wedding Compilation.......2001-07-24
This album provides you with some good reference materials on planning the music for your wedding. Many of us may sit around wondering what on earth "Tempo di Mineutto" is. Well, with this album you will wonder no more. This is a pretty good compilation of some wedding favorites set in order that they would appear in your ceremony (prelude, processional, ceremony and recessional). Even if you aren't planning a wedding, this album provides you with some really good classical music to relax by. At a good discount, this CD is a nice addition to any collection. I would recommend this disc.

Album Description
`I have rarely been so stunned by the opening track of a disc before. The performance of Stanford's The Blue Bird here attains the sublime.' Hi-Fi News & Record Review
Customer Reviews:
A Cambridge Singers high point.......2005-10-17
One of the very best recordings this choir has produced, and a definitely top choice for anyone who loves this choir or English choral music in general. Absolutely first-rate singing...and the literature is just too gorgeous to be on a one disc and pass up. The Delius pieces will make you melt, and the Vaughan Williams 3 Shakespeare Songs are nothing short of phenomenal.
How sweet it is.......2005-09-26
This disc is a bit different from many of the Cambridge Singers' discs in that it is exclusively secular songs. This was recorded at the Great Hall of University College School, London, in 1986, and originally released on vinyl. I cannot find an analog/digital code (many vinyl originals were first recorded in analog and then transferred to digital, sometimes clumsily) - despite this, the recording quality is crisp, clear, and vibrant.
--Music--
The music here is simply gorgeous. English musical tradition is long in the area of folk songs, but there was a waning of folk songs during Georgian and Victorian times. Also, despite the tradition of choral music which has been strong in England continuously, there was a definite resurgence of interest with the advent of the Oxford Movement in the nineteenth century.
The music here represents the work of many prominent English composers - Vaughan Williams, Holst, Britten, Delius, Stanford, and Elgar; others whose names are less well known generally are also represented, such as Moeran, Grainger, Chapman, and Bairstow. Vaughan Williams is represented in his setting of three Shakespeare texts to music ('Full Fathom Five', 'The cloud-capp'd towers', and 'Over Hill, Over Dale'). Britten is represented with Five Flower Songs. The title piece comes from a text chosen by Elgar - 'There is sweet music', according to Rutter, demonstrates a wonderful ability to match words to music in a way he describes as uncanny.
There is poetry in the texts and in the music here.
--Liner Notes--
The notes for this recording include the titles and words of each song together with source citations. There is also a brief essay on this musical period in English history. One thing conspicuously missing is much biographical information about John Rutter, or any descriptive information about the Cambridge Singers. This disc does not even have a list of the singers.
--John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.
--The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices, many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages. Many are former members of the choir of Clare College and other Cambridge collegiate choirs (hence the name, Cambridge Singers). In the quarter-century since the founding, the Cambridge Singers have produced an impressive body of recordings.
This is a gorgeous recording.
Something about British Choral Music..........2005-07-19
It is such pleasure to see this re-release of 1986 recording by John Rutter and the Cambridge Singers from the Great Hall of University College School, London. The original recording has long been a favorite of legions of devotees of the British Choral tradition and this collection remains one of the finest samplings of significant a capella songs available.
Opening with the hauntingly simple and beautiful 'The blue bird' by CV Stanford (to whom this album was dedicated), the tone of the CD is set as a stroll through the mists and bogs of the English countryside. Songs by Frederick Delius (one featuring the then unappreciated tenor soloist Mark Padmore!), Edward Elgar, various folk songs beautifully arranged for four-part chorus, the 'Five Flower Songs' by Benjamin Britten, and finally the extraordinary 'Three Shakespeare Songs' set to music by Ralph Vaughan Williams are all included in this generous recital.
Vaughan Williams songs are brief but immaculately written choral works. 'Full fathom five' and 'The cloud-capped towers' find all the mystery in Shakespeare's 'The Tempest' while 'Over hill, over dale' is the quintessential musical rendering of the fairies frolics from 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'. Rutter and the Cambridge Singers are splendid and the acoustic of the recording hall adds just the right amount of resonance to complete the magic of these songs. Highly recommended! Grady Harp, July 05
Unbelievably gorgeous.......2005-04-09
This is one of my all-time favorite choral CDs -- from start to finish, the harmonies are gorgeous, the mood contemplative, and the singing (as usual with the Cambridge Singers) is inspired. The title track is stunning, and the Londonderry Air is one of the most beautiful wordless arrangements you'll ever hear. I also love "The Oak and the Ash," although it's hard to pick favorites on such a uniformly wonderful CD. I myself am a serious singer, and this is the kind of music that keeps me coming back to rehearsals. Buy it, you will definitely never regret it!

Customer Reviews:
Sweet Water S/T '93 disc.......2007-02-05
For those of you who were in Seattle back in the day (late '80's-to-early '90's)and who had been familiar with these cats from their SGM days (by the way, if anyone out there has a lead on their 1988 AGGRESSION indie release, please let me know), and had also rocked out to the '93 disc in its' previous incarnation on New Rage from 1992, this Atlantic release can only be considered a major disappointment. In fact, if I'm not mistaken, I seem to recall the band releasing this album on their own BEFORE the New Rage release of '92, and that rocked even harder than the versions from both New Rage '92 and Atlantic '93! Trust me, folks, the Atlantic release you've all been raving about is tame and watered-down compared to both of this album's 2 previous incarnations.
Great Album, really miss this band.......2006-03-18
Sweet Water was one of the best bands in Seattle during the Grunge era. This album, as well as "Superfriends" did not leave my CD player all throughout college. Would love to see them live again, if they would only start playing shows again!
Seattle sound..forget it ..just plain G-R-E-A-T !!!.......2004-02-04
Well, this release by these guys was the first I have heard not knowing anything at all about them nor caring very much about the flavour of the month "seatle sound" or "grunge" genre in general. Let me tell you (and this is coming from an old school hard rock cat and collector/fanatic with about 5 k albums in my collection),forget the labels, this album is one of the better hard rockers I have ever heard. When you close your eyes and imagine, some tracks might take you back to the killer good ol' days of British hard rock magic. The sickness of the music industry would never allow a relevant band like this to succeed..sad.THIS IS A FANTASTIC ALBUM PEOPLE..DONT HESSITATE AND PICK THIS UP..YOU WILL NOT BE SORRY.
The Greatest Band Ever!.......2003-04-18
I grew up in Seattle, saw a lot of cool bands play, and can say with confidence that SweetWater was the most amazing band by far. This CD completely Rawks from start to finish. Even more, their energy on stage was unparalleled in an era of exciting Seattle bands. After seeing them in concert, the CD is an even greater experience, filled with rich memories. It is unfortunate that so many missed out on witnessing such unique talent.
sweet water rocks.......1999-12-06
I saw Sweetwater play many times back in the early 90's, and have listened to them ever since. I love this music, and consider them among my favorite groups. Both records are awesome!

Another little band from Seattle, this one offers proof on its third album that the Pacific Northwest hotbed continues to evolve and mature. Grunge fails to cast even the faintest of shadows on this young quartet's supercharged and ultra-hooky approach to mainstream rock. Flashing a wit, style, and confidence that's comparable in some ways to U.K. kingpins Oasis, guitarist Rich Credo and singer Adam Czeisler mesh thrillingly on muscular tracks like "Feed Yourself," "Slide," "Superstar," and "Cake and Strychnine." --Jeff Bateman

Great CD.......2007-07-28
I guess this is a Seattle thing as only positive reviews come from there. I am originally from there so maybe thats why I am a fan. This is a great CD that takes me back to the days. As many say I am not sure how Sweet Water missed making it big. They are a great band and this is their best album. Rock on Sweet Water!!
Someone must be listening to a different band.......2007-02-07
I never post reviews. I just found this as I was using a lyrics engine for this GREAT cd. All of the reviews are right on, except the one before mine...Dickwilliam from Florida or whatever. How can a guy who lives in Florida appreciate music written in Washington anyway?
Now if you don't appreciate the so called "grunge" era then you most likely won't like this. This is diet grunge. Nothing hard core, just good lyrics melded with melody and rock and roll.
Songs like Feed Yourself and Superstar are the reasons I bought this cd. I remember hearing them on the radio when I was a teenager. I remember seeing them open for bands on the Seattle scene when I was in college. They are incredible, and I doubt anyone who has ventured to read this would dissagree.
They never got the air play that many other bands of less quality received. A few minor hits in the Seattle area, is what the world has to judge them by. Our loss.
This is good music, don't trash it because you were looking for Ok Computer.
Get this cd and make the decision yourself.
No, no, no.......2007-01-17
This album is awful. When I heard it was simalar to early radiohead I got excited. It sucks. the singer is bad, the riffs are bad. This is like a boy band piece of crap. Not worth getting.
Shoulda been big..........2006-12-16
This cd has been one of my faves since it came out. Sweet Water was great in concert and I really wish they were still around. They should have been much bigger then they were...
Great album, you will not be disappointed.......2006-04-05
Sweet Water was a really great band- saw them a bunch of times in college. Especially like the tracks "Feed Yourself" and "Adeleine". Every song is memorable, really wish they would get back together and play again. One of the most underrated bands from the grunge era.

What ??.......2006-12-10
The idiot from Virginia thought it a bit strange that an American black man would give the communists a chance. Looking back from modern perspective is easier than what he had to go on in the thirtes. Gee, I wonder why a black man would do that after all that southern hospitality, segregation, and steady work you gave the "black folk". Not to mention all those nighttime campfires you had going in their honor.
While I might be from New York I certainly would not be called a bleeding heart liberal but I can certainly understand why the poor soul was looking elsewhere. You are either ignorant of history and its influences on people or you are a totally unsympathetic jackass!!
Nice Voice, but not a nice person...(read on, pls.).......2006-01-07
Paul Robeson, who was brainwashed into
beleiving Communist rhetoric (which is
strange as hell for an Amer-I-can black
man). A good singing voice but all cover
songs! Come on, Paul!
A let down.......2004-09-24
I own several Robeson recordings and purchased this one with high hopes as it has a great selection of tracks. Unfortunately given the excellent recording quality of "Songs for Free Men" and "The Paul Robeson Oddyssey", the remasters from what I assume are 78's and possibly radio are a let down and mar what could have been an excellent album.
The definitive Paul Robeson compilation.......2003-09-19
This 2 CD set of Paul Robeson is the definitive collection providing a decent overview of his work in 50 tracks all wonderfully restored from 78s as usual for ASV, with spirituals, show tunes, Shakespeare-like readings, and more done with a trademark bass voice and orchestration that backs up Paul perfectly and he would later be one of the first civil rights activists. The first disc is a reissue of the single disc "Ol' Man River-His 25 Greatest" on ASV containing "Ol' Man River," "Mighty Like a Rose," "Joshua Fit De Battle Ob Jericho," "Carry Me Back To Green Pastures," "Lazy Bones," and many more classics which is also available here at Amazon for those who only want a single disc of Paul's work and the 2nd disc contains 25 more classics including "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen," "The Old Folks At Home," "My Old Kentucky Home," "Wagon Wheels," "Git On Board, Little Children," and many more. In other words, all 50 of these tracks are essential to any early pop, folk, gospel, blues, etc. music fan and this is the set to introduce yourself to his work in a convenient 2 CD package with the usual great liner notes and details on the original 78s ASV provides with each CD released in their Living Era series.

Customer Reviews:
SSS is great, but not Lou's best album........2005-02-27
I'm glad that someone finally put at least one of Lou Johnson's albums back in print. I've been a long time fan of Lou Johnson's "booming" baritone voice. In the early 60's, he was sort of marketed as the male Dionne Warwick, having orginally released some of Burt Bacharach's songs even before Dionne. It's unfortunate, however that there isn't a compilation of some of these fine recordings including the old 45's of "Unsatisfied", "Park Avenue", "This Night", "Always Something There to Remind Me", and his biggest hit, "Reach out for Me". I think this would have been a better place to start for those not familiar with Lou Johnson's music. I do like "Sweet Southern Soul", however, except that copying a lot of soul artists of that time, Atlantic marketed him by having him sing some of the pop soul songs of the day -- not many originals here. If you really want to hear a superior album, scout around for an import copy of his Stax/Volt album, "With you in Mind". In my opinion, this album smokes SSS in quality, originality, and creativity. In a nutshell, SSS is a good album, but to me it doesn't do him proper justice considering what I know of his 60's releases and the forementioned album, "With You In Mind".
Sme of the best soul singing I have ever heard.......2004-06-14
Sweet Southern Soul is just a great album. There isn't a bad song on it. Lou Johnson's style is emotional and very energetic. On B.B. King's "Rock me Baby" Lou Johnson belts it out like he is singing gospel. This cd is just awesome. As obscure as Lou Johnson is he is still one of the best soul singer i have ever heard.

Elegance in sound.......2007-05-13
McKellar has one of the finest tenor voices I have heard. There is a range that is broad, while keeping a very masculine sound. I learned that he was trained classically and gave up opera after a season or two to do concert singing. These songs have lush or spare orchestral arrangements as the occasion demands. They are dramatic, even Hollywood-like, arrangements verging on schmalt, but a second hearing convinced me that he was among the finest tenors of the 20th century and the arrangements are "just right."
Scottish Songs for a Lifetime.......2007-05-12
If I was to be only able to carry one CD with me to a desert island, this one might be my choice. The poetry of Robert Burns is entirely inspiring. The vocal performance of McKellar is adequate to Burns' work. The orchestration is rich and appropriately simple. These songs will "stick to your ribs" and leave you longing for a visit to the old sod to personaly perceive the beloved ambiance they evoke.
Simply exquisite!.......2007-05-06
Who can sing like this today? Vocalion has done it again -- two of Kenneth McKellar's wonderful Decca recordings from 1961 and 1962 brought together for a wonderful vocal treat. There are things the lover of the English art song and ballad cannot be without -- Jennifer Vyvyan's lovely renditions of Michael Head's Foxgloves and Roger Quilter's Love's philosophy; Eileen Farrell's stentorian Sing to me by Sydney Homer; John Mark Ainsley's rhapsodic performance of Quilter's Go, Lovely Rose, and Kenneth McKellar singing Land of Heart's Desire, Sleeps the Noon in the Deep Blue Sky and Robert Burns' My love is like a red, red rose. Happily, these songs are preserved on this terrific release. McKellar had a wonderful, powerful and lyric tenor voice. His operatic and oratorio singing is moving on top of being very musical -- dynamics, portamento, etc., scrupulously observed and artistic; however, his sining of art songs, folk songs and ballads is exemplary and always, underscored ALWAYS moving and right on the mark. McKellar had a real affinity for this music and it simply erupts from the grooves (oops, I'm dating myself)!
The Songs of Robert Burns is lovely -- I defy anyone to listen to McKellar's rendition of My love is like a red, red rose, and come away without a tear in the eye. In my opinion, however, the true gem is the release of McKellar's Songs of the Hebrides. Vocalion includes McKellar's spoken introductions to these songs and it is incredible. One might think that it would sound trite, but McKellar is right on the mark and the introductions make the songs that much more memorable. Marjory Kennedy-Fraser is surely smiling down from heaven as this is the most beautiful and atmospheric recording of her Songs of the Hebrides. McKellar scales down his powerful voice for Land of Heart's Desire and it is ravishing. No one comes away unmoved. Again, who can sing like this today? I tried to think of any tenor or baritone singing today that could come close to this kind of a performance -- I could not think of one. Thank you Vocalion for bringing these performances back to light. Speaking of the recording, it is lush, with that beautiful early stereophonic sound preserved. For the lover's of the art song, ballad or folk song, you MUST have these performances.
Love and frustration.......2007-03-08
This recording has some wonderful Scottish songs by a super Scottish tenor. The difficult part for me is that I need the sheet music to go with one of the songs, but I had no luck locating it anywhere. There are other versions of the song ("My heart's in the highlands") available but none like this one. Is there any chance you could help me find it??
Sincerely,
Lyndall
