The emergence of greatness! Say hello to KING'S X!!!!.......2007-05-10
This was the debut album for Doug Pinnick, Ty Tabor and Jerry Gaskill, henceforth known as King's X. They would acquire a cult like following from this albums release that stands still today.
The truly great thing about this album is the fact that, when hair bands where spewing the same old crap that people seemed to eat up because it was always on the radio, these guys took it upon themselves to create a new version of the genre.
Out of the Silent Planet is a rock/funk/jazz and blues without the horns fusion that broke new ground. I would compare it to the genius of Steely Dan in the 70's, when they took the classic rock sound and added jazz/blues/soul to create their own sound.
Harmonies on vocals are the earmark of King's X. These guys were born to sing together. Jerry (drummer) and Ty (guitar) have the perfect voices to blend in as backup to Doug's (bass) soulful, low key bluesy sound.
The standouts on the album are: "In The New Age" which has one of the coolest bass lines I have ever heard, "Goldilox" which is a love song of sorts, "King" which was an early sign of their ability to play on words brilliantly, "Shot Of Love" which uses harmony like only the Beatles could do before.
Remaining songs on the album are strong at least. This is a stand-up, take no prisoners, this is who we are, welcome to King's X album and they don't apologize.
Thankfully, they didn't quit. Almost 20 years later, they are still going strong.
A great intro album and a must have.
forgot how good this album is.......2007-03-26
Funny to listen to this again after so many years. Lotsa great tracks and the songs just get better and better the more you listen. You can really hear the influence Kings X must have had on Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden, etc. "In the New Age" alone has elements borrowed by each if those bands. "Far, Far Away" has some of the best vocals dUg has ever done and the key change coming out of the bridge is just sick. "Shot of Love" hasn't aged well though, sounds pretty geigh, but is the only blemish on a great record that started the whole "D" tuning craze.
ONE OF THE BEST DEBUTS!.......2007-03-15
Kings X sounds like a fully mature band even on this, their first album- it is still one of their best. The songwriting, engineering, and performance are all top notch, and of course, Mr. Pinnicks incredible voice and Ty's ripping guitar always deliver. I've been a fan of King's X since Faith, Hope, and Love came out, but somehow I overlooked their debut until recently- it is now among my favorites! Highly recommended for any fan of melodic rock with a Christian and uplifting message.
An absolute MASTERPIECE........2006-11-08
Kerrang Magazine raved about this new "New age Metal" band from Houston and that is what grabbed my attention. I looked at the cover of the album and the sight of Doug Pinnock with his Mohawk hairdo and Calvary jacket and Jerry Gaskill with his very 80's New Romantics hairstyle kinda made me think "What am I getting into here?". My thoughts were blown away immediately. For once, Kerrang got it right. I had been misled by many of their 'Next BIG thing' predictions, and Kings X shoulda been one of them. I saw Kings X many times on their travels in the U.K. including the Mini Thrash festival (I HATE THRASH)in Brixton with Suicidal Tendancies/M.O.D. (Or was it S.O.D.) and Anthrax. I was lucky enough to leave early and to meet Doug on the Tube on the way home and have a great chat. I also saw Kings X support ACDC at the Wembley Arena, but that was a bit of a mis-match too. The fans only came for the Headliners, and the Houston Trio were not given a hope in Hell. One of the greatest ever gigs I saw however was their debut at the Marquee Club in 1988 shortly after this release. What an amazing show and the response was even overwhelming for the Band. Another Marquee gig the following year in support of Gretchen... followed suit. Kings X toured the U.K. regularly to try and win acclaim, but sadly they remained as an underground Cultish band. Their 1st 4 CDs (OOTSP/Gretchen goes to Hollywood/Faith Hope Love and Kings X) are all highly recommended, but the debut overall is by far the strongest. Gretchen, however, was to prove the most popular. As other reviewers have pointed out, there is not a weak track on the CD, and the production from the so called '4th member' of the group, Sam Taylor, has a major part to play in the amazing quality of sound from this 3 piece. I have a demo of the Pre-Kings X band, Sneak Preview, and here we did get sneak previews of many of the tracks from the album with a raw feel. I probably would have given these guys a miss had this been the final result. The CD opens with the epic "In the new age". A very heavy slow number with crunching guitars which takes us into perhaps Kings X most memorable song "Goldilox". I was at a gig of theirs from around 1999 in Camden where Doug didnt sing a note. The audience did it for him. Very emotional indeed. "Power of Love" is one of my personal favourites with its gentle opening riffs which explodes into pure hard rock heaven. The guitar work is very Powerful here. "Wonder" follows suit. The main reason for the high praise of this album however is the wonderful vocal harmonies. "King", "Far far away" and "Shot of Love" for example are all Top class. "Visions" closes the album, and what a way to close. Another heavyish song that is most noted for its Headbanging and Thrashy element. Why did Kings X not achieve greater success? There are a couple of theories. Maybe it was the media coverage of their Christianity beliefs or just the fact that they were'nt Charasmatic enough or "Dangerous" like their competition at the time i.e. Guns n Roses for starters. They were very nice and humble guys who genuinely love the music. However, things changed in the latter stages of Kings X musical and spiritual life. "Ear Candy" was a huge risk, and the pyschedelic twist did'nt really help their cause. Albums like "Dogman" were heavied up big time. Recent Kings X releases like "Black Like Snake" and "Ogre Tones" cannot touch the feel of their earlier material, and it seems as though GOD is the one who got all the blame, as fans will witness from the "Ogre Tones" album. Basically, Kings X, I believe, peaked on this album. If this was their thid album, say, things could have been a whole lot better. As I said earlier, get this CD first, and take it from there.
Out of this (Silent) world.......2006-05-10
When I first saw "King" on MTV I fell in love with the powerful groove of the band that in the coming years I would come to love more than any other. I instantly relished the opportunity to turn on some of my friends to them, who would also become devoted fans. The music was like nothing I had ever heard before and, despite the influence they have had on the world of hard rock, like nothing I have heard since. The first sign of their uniqueness is their use of drop-D tuning. The added crunch was important to give impetous to their grooves, but unlike most who have used this tuning since, power was not the only thing it added. It gave Ty Tabor the ability to create chordal structures that were truly groundbreaking, making his guitar one of the most unique instruments in rock music. The arrangements as a result were intricate, but the boys made it all fit into the overall structure of the song; the chords fit just right. Doug Pinnick's voice is the heart of the band and on 'Planet' he sings with a gravity that touches your soul but with a freedom that takes you away. The harmonies are unlike any other hard rock band (the only comparison I have ever come up with is CSN).
Finally, the songwriting and lyrical content are amazing. The songs have solid grooves with powerful chord progressions and melodies that are memorable but inventive. The lyrics are more intelligent and positive than any other metal band and probably were the main reason they never got off the ground. They sang about spirituality and real issues in an age where blatant sexual references and satanic posing were the tickets to success.
'In the New Age' begins the album with a strong statement about pseudo-spirituality with a muscular melody playing against snaking guitar lines and almost spooky backing vocals. Goldilox is a love song, one of a very few King's X love songs, of haunting beauty. Then comes three songs that I always take as a set in my mind. 'Power of Love', 'Wonder' and 'Sometimes' are songs of spiritual longing that can make your heart break but since they are so smartly crafted they have are totally devoid of sappy sentimentality. 'Power of Love' is as the title suggests a 'powerful' ode to the meaning of love and one of my all-time favorite songs. 'Wonder' is a song about the band's struggle with how their spirituality fits in to their music and their everyday lives. Then 'Sometimes' comes back with the confidence that their faith finally brings them. 'King' is a song with a groove as big as Mack truck and just as heavy, yet, it is a song of hope for justice. 'What is This?' is an example of how exceptional King's X are at weaving a sound picture. The verses admit the confussion and doubt that a life of faith brings to one in a world that rejects people who are different and the swirling, lurching guitar reflects it. But, then the power of the chorus again brings home the reassurance that faith can still be. 'Far, Far Away' is overshadowed by the other songs on the record but its still a very good one--there simply is not a bad song here. 'Shot of Love', the second single, is probably the best song on the album but shows why they couldn't get very far. How does a record company market a band whose best song references holy communion but shuns the label Christian? Finally, the lyric "The lunatic says goodbye to those who say they love him" from the final cut, 'Visions' is an example of just how different King's X is. Most of the song is a durge that depicts the slow confusion of insanity--which Doug admits he feels sometimes--but then kicks into frantic crazyness that when played live leaves one floored by the band's tightness and control within a seemingly chaotic arrangement.
From top to bottom 'Out of the Silent Planet' is as perfect as you can get. The only possible problem with it is that the sound isn't as polished as it could be, but that was never Producer Sam Taylor's intention anyway. Polish would have gotten in the way of the emotion. This is a band that could make you think and feel, a very rare thing. Though FHL would be their most ambitious album and Dogman would be their most powerful album, this was their most consistanly brilliant album. This one goes to 11.

Out of the Planet Maiden.......2001-03-14
OOTSP, the second track off Iron Maiden's 2000 album, "Brave New World" is a testament that Maiden is still rocking as hard as ever. Although the track is edited from the full album version, it maintains the elements that make it one of the album's best. The harmonic vocals on the track are mesmerizing, and the powerful riffs will keep you begging for more. The fact that this single contains "Wasted Years" live is a treat in and of itself, being one of the Maiden tracks that is rarely ever played on tour. Plus, the video with footage from Maiden's 2000 tour will make you wish you had been there. Up the Irons!!

Customer Reviews:
Great new Maiden.......2000-11-20
Iron Maiden is one of the heavy metal greats. This song is truly awesome. It starts of slow-then hits you like a freight train. The harmonies and vocals and solos are incredibly good and is a testament to how strong Maiden still is.
The second great single from Brave New World.......2000-11-18
Out of the Silent Planet is the second single from Maiden's amazing "Brave New World" album. Out of the Silent Planet is great. It has a similar "Run to The Hills" gallop to it. Very catchy and very cool. This version is shortened from the album version of it. It is cut down from over 8 minutes to about four and a half minutes for radio air play. A truly great song. The video is great as well. It showcases footage from Maiden's Metal 2000 tour earlier this year. The two live tracks are another great addition. "Wasted Years" and "Aces High" are two of Maiden's best songs in my opinion. It's really cool because I think that this is the first time "Wasted Years" has been recorded live and put on CD. And hearing "Aces High", the opening track from the Ed Hunter Tour, gives me chills because it sounds just as I remember it on that tour and I remember how great that show really was.

Not the best choice.......2001-07-04
This third single from the new era is not a good one. The new version of the song "Out of the Silent Planet" is a little heavier than the original version. It also lacks the early beginning which, in my opinion, shouldn't have been cut. Besides, the live songs are not well mixed. "ces High" sounds quite different from the original version but it is,by far, not as good as the version on "Live after Death". "Wasted Year" sounds a little better. Adrian is simply driving the crowd crazy with his awesome solo, but I still think it was not well mixed. furthernmore, other songs should have been included in one of the three singles, like "The Trooper" and "The Clansman" which are songs that sounded great with three guitars.
Great Single.......2000-12-06
Out of the Silent Planet is the third single from Iron Maiden's new albun "Brave New World" (the other two are Wicker Man parts 1 and 2). The actual song in this single is an edited version of the orginal song of 6.26 minutes down to about four. The song has very good grinding guitars, and great vocals from Bruce Dickinson. There is also the ubiquitous Iron Maiden gallop which is perpetuated by Harris' bass and Nicko's drums. The live version of Wasted Years is from the Ed Hunter tour and is performed very well. The song has been a crowd favourite ever since it appeared on the 'Somewhere in Time' album. Overall a great single, albeit a bit pricey.
