Rapidly becoming one of my favorite R&R cds..........2005-12-11
This is my first Johnny Thunders recording I've ever listened to. This may sound odd to those reading, at first, but I came across this recording while trying to track down an old friend...James Heath...who is the sax player in Thunders' band. James (or Jamey) was playing sax in a band called The Bangs. I first saw them at a club in New Rochelle, N.Y. around 1981-1982. They played their often...a house favorite, and the owner of the club was Vincent Pastore...of Sopranos fame! When that band broke up some years later, I recall Jamey being somewhat excited hooking up with Johnny Thunders. I recall my friends, and I, agreeing that Jamey was the best rock sax player we had ever heard...he played in the style of the old black honkers...Illinois Jacquet, Big Jay McNeely, Joe Houston, etc. The only current player that I'm aware of, that could compare, would be Greg Piccolo...once the front man for Roomful of Blues. ("Heavy Juice" is a favorite Piccolo cd...roaring sax stuff!) Anyway, this Thunders' recording is a fantastic rock set...some reflective, moving music...and some "foot-to-the-pedal" rock and roll! On almost all the tracks you can hear Jamey's sax...on some of the tracks he is amazing. You will never hear a version of Crossroads like this...the entire band is kicking! When Jamey was playing with The Bangs...he would literally slam the heel of his shoe on the stage floor to keep rhythym to some roaring solo he was doing ("Ain't To Proud To Beg"..."Dirty Water"..."Shotgun")! Even when he wasn't doing a solo, you would still hear his horn "filling" the background...you can hear some of that on this Thunders' recording. I hope those who read this will discover Jamey Heath's playing. I know I've digressed here from the topic of Johnny Thunders, but rest assured this recording has made me a Johnny Thunders fan for life. Sadly, Jamey Heath passed away...I think in 1994...from an overdose. Do a Google for Alison Gordy...she's a vocalist,on this recording, and writes fondly of both Johnny and Jamey. How ironic the Thunders' track (#3) "Disappointed In You" is...considering the sad circumstances of Johnny and Jamey. Jamey...miss you...listening to this recording really brought back some memories. Terrific stuff! Get it and enjoy rock and roll the way it was, and should be.
