Those expecting a collection of full-on metal songs on the latest Sevendust album will get only half of what they want. While the band has always had a more melodic, less rap-metal approach than their peers, tracks on Animosity are far more accessible than typical nu metal. Some songs, with their contradictory mixes, do sound disjointed and confusing, but "Crucified," "Damaged," and "Dead Set" are just a few examples where it all fits together nicely.
Elsewhere, tracks fall into power-ballad waters, but thankfully they are not cheesy. "Xmas Day" and the midtempo "Follow"--featuring assists by Aaron Lewis of Staind--feature dark but emotional melodies that are carried beautifully by Lajon Witherspoon's soulful vocals. The album closes on a spiritual note with "Angel's Son," Sevendust's heartfelt tribute to late Snot singer Lynn Strait, which is fleshed out by a string section. --Gail Flug
Album Description
For the first time in the life of the band, Sevendust (TVT Records) have had time to write and create their songs at home, not in between tour dates as they have in the past. With this new, found freedom, the band wrote 13 mind blowing, beautifully-crafted hard rock classics.
Customer Reviews:
sevendust.......2007-07-07
incredible disc. this cd has it all, from the very first track to the last and everything in-between it delivers! non stop full throttle metal. sevendust does it again. one of their very best, and i have them all!!
Excellent throughout.......2007-01-12
I only heard of Sevendust after seeing them play Angel's Son on Letterman, and I was blown away. So, I immediately bought their cd, not having heard another song. I was pretty surprised to hear how heavy they were, considering Angel's Son is very ballad-like. But I loved the cd from the first song to the last. I've listened to clips from their other cds, which seem decent, but from what I've heard, this is the epitomal Sevendust cd. Perhaps a bit more mainstream and hooky, but there's not a thing wrong with that. while very heavy, it's also very melodic, and i can get even a Britney Spears lover to enjoy this cd.
Underated classic..........2006-12-15
While some people do appreciate this album, I find that alot of Sevendust fans don't really dig this album. I can't understand this to be honest. Sure, its different than their Self-Titled or Home, but since when is different bad? If I want to listen to Home, then I'll listen to Home. I just want to say for the record that this is a incredible album. I guess you could say I'm a huge Sevendust fan and I love all their albums, and this is easily some of the best stuff that they have done.
There is not a bad track on Animosity, but on the otherhand there is not really what you might call a standout track. There are no classic Sevendust tracks in vein of "Black" or "Waffle". With that said, I think this Animosity works better as an overall album than their earlier work. While previous albums had fantastic tracks, there were some that I would just skip over. I never felt the desire to sit and listen to "Sevendust" or "Home" from begining to end. Animosity is different. When I put it in, I usually do listen to it from begining to end.
I will admitt that this album is probably harder to get into than any of their other work. But it has lasting appeal, its a complex album. It doesn't get played out or feel stale. As I said before I think this is some of the best stuff that Sevendust has donc. Its not as hard as Home, but it's a very atmospheric album. It almost feels experimental at times. But you know what, it works. Lajon has such an incredible voice, you just feel impelled to continue listening. Give this album a chance, and you might fall in love with it.
great from start to finish.......2006-10-13
This is pretty clearly my favorite Sevendust album, and pretty much one of my all time favorites as it has such a lot of really strong songs on it. There is no real flow to the album as such, one song to the next is fairly different, but that's good, just don't expect a sort of journey thing.
For me it's something like what would have happened if Living Colour had made a follow up to Stain - doesn't sound like them but the style of very clear segments of music within songs, powerful riffs, and passionately performed lyrics is a fair way different to a lot of the other hard rock stuff in offering something a bit outside a conventional formula.
While it doesn't have the same sort of stand out rock tracks as 'Home' had , it's gone for a range of really really good songs - tracks 1-3 and 6-9 are particularly good: Dead Set, Damaged and Praise perhaps a little above the rest. The rest is good, but not as good (to my taste) except the last track which is a complete masterpiece, a slower but exceptionally passionate dedication to a dear freind of theirs who passed.
For me having those 8 tracks which are exceptional is enough for me to really love this record, it's certainly a creative record (although it could be said some of the tracks on Home went a little further) and it's got a nice sense of power and passion to it.
the best sevendust cd yet.......2006-06-25
i think this is the best sevendust cd and wont be matched. i own seasons and next and the first 2, home and their self titled i will be getting shortly. but out of all of them i like this one the best. its melodic yet heavy and has some great chorus's. the only sevendust cd that i own that i actually dont really skip any song. ive owned it for half a year and listen to it almost every day. the other cds are good too but this is their finest cd. the only song that i might dislike a little is beautiful but even then its an ok song. trust, live again, angel's son, and damaged are just some of my favorites

Album Description
Import pressing of their 1996 album that is unavailable in the US. As one of the horizon expanders who brought us thrash music, Corrosion of Conformity fell heavily onto the punk side of song styling with riff sculpting taken from the book of doom bands such as Black Sabbath or Saint Vitus.

Originally Released in 1996, this is Considered as One of their Best Full on Metal Albums.

An album way ahead of its time.......2007-03-20
I got the cassette for Christmas from my grandparents in 1987. I remember thinking, "How ironic it is that the most brutally intense hardcore album I own has been given to me by my grandparents." Oh well, it was on my list. I read about it in Thrasher a couple of months before.
Animosity was mind-blowing. Upon the first few listens, it was almost too crazy for my white, suburban 16-year old mind to handle. The guitar feedback, the way-over-the-top drumming, the distorted vocals (that a thousand bands would go on to copy in coming years) ... it was like I had discovered another country. At the time, it was all Whitesnake and Def Leppard on the radio and MTV. Even my collection of Dead Kennedys and Black Flag albums didn't hold a candle to this mayhem. And it was all done with talent to boot! I couldn't believe what I was experiencing.
And what an impression it's left on me. To this day, after I come home from work and my 10-month old starts fussing because he's hungry, the lyrics go running through my head ... "looking for answers laughed hungry child!" I mean, what does it take for a song to leave that kind of impression on you 20 years later???
Obviously I'm an old man, so this album may sound much differently to most of you reading this review. But I listened to it again recently and I've gotta' say -- it's stood the test of time for me. If you're into Mike Patton, Hatebreed, Snapcase, Fear Factory, Pelican, Mastadon, Killswitch Engage ... whatever it may be that led you here ... in my humble opinion, this is where it all began.
A classic.......2007-01-08
This is an amazing album. I strongly recommend this for any fan of speed metal. The drummer is amazing -- he adds a lot of detail to the songs which give the songs a lot of heaviness. The songs are extremely memorable and are always a pleasure to listen to.
I can't believe it!.......2006-08-01
I've been on a C.O.C. binge lately. I drug out the old cassete tapes and decided to look for them on disc. It's a shame I can only find "animosity" on cd, It's probably their best recording but "Eye For An Eye" is just classic. It's the pre thrash, hardcore punk masterpiece that paved the way for DRI and all those other bands that had such an impact in the early 80's. C.O.C. was just that, dirty. I've sen them in 90's and I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Old C.O.C. is something original, If you can get it, get it!
COC at the Eagles Lodge in Denver 1986.......2006-05-04
This is one of the best crossover records! The others being CroMags "Best Wishes" and the Crumbsuckers "Life of Dreams" and S.O.D - Speak English or Die. I can say I was there in 1986 and saw COC at the local Eagles Lodge. No stage. No fights. Just a great pit and the low down creepy crawly mosh. We helped set up the gear on the floor and helped carry gear out to the van when the show was over. That's just what the shows were like back then. Hell we even cleaned up after the show so we could have more shows at the Eagles Lodge. Kids today have no idea what we would do to have shows. Yep I'm old but you can f*%# off hipster AFI, SOAD, Disturbed fan. We'd buy a bands merchendise or just pitch in and give them money so they'd have gas to get to the next town. For me Corrosion of Conformity ~ Animosity is a big part of the soundtrack of my life. Eye for an Eye is also a favorite but what could top the 7" record Six Songs with Mike Singing? Nothing! F*%$ing Nothing!
One of the best.......2005-08-04
Hearing this album ten years ago changed the way I thought about music. I was listening to only punk at the time, and was handed this by a good friend. It opened more doors than I can explain. Crossover, metal, hardcore, there is really no label for this album that fits for me. Animosity is fast, brutal, intelligent, and was way ahead of its time. If you have tried other coc albums and have not been pleased, try this one.....Its one of my top three albums of all time.

I needed something to get me going when I workout at the gym...........I've actually lost weight listening to this when I'm on the treadmill.........nuf said!!!!
THIS Is F*cking Bay Brutality!.......2006-07-10
Good lord. Animosity is one hell of an amazing band. I actually got a chance to see them with Cattle Decapitation/From A Second Story Window/Misery Index/Job For A Cowboy (not on Amazon), and look at their singer for a second. He delivers like no other! And the music is amazing technical deathgrind that will punch you in the face and you won't know what hit you!
Whether it's "Manhunt" with its intro blastbeat and bass line thrown in, or the chug-chug mood of "Thieves", or the anthem track "The Black Page", you're in for a treat. And the plus is that it gets good distribution and only costs about $10! But it's worth it damnit!
I really wanted to give this 5 stars but..........2006-05-04
I give it 9/10. Don't get me wrong I love his growl, which I think has more of a grindcore influence myself (along the lines of Nile, or something of that sort), I just think it's overdone and gets very repetitive. The singer is very versatile and I just think his growl would pack more of a punch if used more sparingly (like On Broken Wings). The guitars and drums are SICK!!! Throw The Red Death, The Red Chord, Nile, and Psyopus in a blender and that's about the sound to expect. I originally bought this cd because they are on Black Market Activities, and I love every band on there. Definately not what I expected but in a good way. I don't listen to a lot of grind but am more partial to death metal, which is what this band was labeled under, although I believe them to be just as much grindcore as they are death metal and tech metal with some thrash and a little bit of hardcore. The production and artwork on this album are beyond amazing. This is the way technical/heavy-as-fu@# music should be produced. I can hear everything going on in the music without it being "sugar-coated". With 9 songs timed in at 27 mins only the last minute wasted (a phone call from someone talking sh$%).
Favorite Song: The Black Page
Music to punch someone in the face to.......2006-02-28
The anger and brutality in this record is so apparent you cannot help but feel the need to punch someone in the face grow when listening to this. This is brutal music with brutal death vocals, and then some hardcore-esque screams, but no tough guy hardcore vocals. These guys break it down sometimes like a hardcore band, but I think the appropriate label would be brutal/death/tech/grind. These guys are fast, brutal, heavy, the vocalist is a madman, he even has caps on his teeth to prove that he is a hard hitting guy from the streets. Hehe, anyways there is no denying that these guys can tear it up along with any of the greatest in death metal, if they keep it up these guys have a great career ahread of them. Buy an Animosity pipe!
The new wave of Bay Area metal.......2005-11-13
My first exposure to Animosity was at a show in San Francisco, where they opened for some well-known metal acts. Not only was the place packed, the band had turned damn near half the room into a mosh pit. Onstage were five guys that looked barely old enough to drive, but they were crunching out blastbeats and neck-snapping breakdowns like there was no tomorrow. This album, Animosity's second, is the first that truly captures their sound. The band mixes technical death metal, thrash, hardcore, and even out-of-nowhere bluesy riffs into one big ball of fury. Singer Leo Miller switches fluidly between death growls and midrange rasps, the performances are tight and concise, and the production is clear and heavy. Getting beat down by a bunch of teenagers never felt so good.

one of the better bandsin todays scene.......2006-08-14
Animosity is an awesome band.......and when i learned that none of the members were over 18 when this album was released, my jaw just dropped. For people at such a young age, these guys can PLAY!! Much better than others in the scene who are twice their age.
I guess you could describe the music contained within this disc as pissed off, very heavy thrash with death metal vocals. The lyrics touch on everything from the government, religion, and personal woes. And the drums on this album have to be heard to be believed.......i dont know if they used a drum machine or not, but if the drummer is a real person............He must have like, eight arms!!!!!!!!! Check em out.
Death metal at its finest!.......2005-09-09
Shut It Down is Animosity's first album.
The San Francisco bred teenagers (yes I said teenagers) pack an incredible punch with hardcore influenced death metal at its pinnacle.
Animosity is one of, if not the best upcoming death metal bands in the USA, the lyrics are harsh and controversial, the vocals are in your face and dirty, the guitar work is beautiful with tons of pig squeals and out of control "string english". And to top it all off is the amazing drum work with lots of double bass pedals and blast beats.
If you are a true death metal junkie as I am, you need to buy this album immediately. This album is 100% garunteed not to leave your CD player for 3 months.
one of the best bands ever.......2005-05-08
animosity delivers everything good and nothing bad. when this cd was released the oldest memeber in the band was 19. every song keeps you going. the vocals are different and the lyrics are very political. plenty of blast beats, and great breakdowns. their new cd is due out in august. if intense hardcore is your cup of tea, go get this. you wont stop listening to it
Crushing.......2004-07-17
Great vocals, it's not always about "omg i don't know what he's saying tee hee hee", if you're one to complain about how inaudible the vocals are (as the first reveiwer/idiot) then this type of music in general is not for you to judge.
the guitars are very straightforward, and crushing, from the intro- it seemed very slayer influenced.
not the best but certainly riding among the top of the better hardcore bands.
sucks!.......2004-07-02
All they do is scream....you cant even hear what they're trying to say...and ALL of the songs sound the same....like they use the same guitar rythms in each and every song!

This 20 track bonus disc features classic Berzerker tracks, one new song 'Heavily Medicated' plus Morbid Angel and Carcass cover versions. The Berzerker are the only band to adeptly marry the basics of old school grind with distinctly current technology. Aural terrorism?.......2007-05-29
Earache describes The Berzerker's new album Animosity as "aural terrorism", given the ever-present onslaught of double bass drum fury combined with hyperkinetic riffery and vocals from hell. While firmly rooted in an old school grind blueprint, the band also seem to benefit from studio trickery in order to update their sound without sacrificing their core elements.
Contrary to some of their older albums, Animosity's guitar sound is more primal, more in-your-face; and thankfully, the processed spoken vocal samples that appeared on some of their previous works are nonexistent here. This is unbridled heaviness, played at break-neck speed and topped with demonic vocals. The machine-gun riffery of "False Hope" keeps pounding out like a marching army of hundred thousand troops whilst monstrous double bass drums of "Evolution" are among their most relentless to date. That said, being a drum machine, the not-so-organic sound of the drums may turn some old-school death metal fans off. While in no way a setback to the album, the tones of kicks and toms do sound identical on each and every song. The most interesting parts are when the guitars slow down to generate doomy atmospheres, as on the intro of "No More Reasons", but it only lasts for a couple of seconds before everything turns into yet another "play as fast as you can" type of grind. That said, the guitar work is also rather simplistic, despite seeming quite complex at first. Most of it is repeated three-note rhythms that get buried under the two-part vocal lines: Luke Kerry does both the super low death growls and the deafening black-like shrieks depending on the speed and structure of the song.
Fans of Berzerker will no doubt enjoy this release, but to me, it seems rather bland and even boring most of the time.
