5 out of 5 stars One of my Favorites.......2007-05-14

I was reading the reviews and noticed Dan Swano was given no credit to the production of the first 3 albums to include Orchid and My Arms Your Hearse. All 3 have a definite Dan Swano feel. Listen to the bass lines on the change ups (Dan Swano all the way) and you will notice they are different in later works. Check out Edge of Sanity's "Crimson" (a band he was in) release and you will note much of the skill and time placed in production although the lyrics were corny. I think MAYH was partly inspired by the same idea of 1 long story with no real breaks in the recording. You can definitely tell the difference in the producer. Although I think Mikael Åkerfeldt being the front man of Opeth learned a great deal in the early productions and has done a fine job after the fact.
Let it be known though it is just my opinion. There is a mastery coming from Sweden that surpasses American metal by far and these guys are a tight nit group that all share their knowledge in the studio. Hence other great producers like Peter Tägtgren. I would also give some credit to Dan on (my favorite) Katatonias' success, having produced their early works also.
This is a great cd. I wish I could discover it again for the first time right along with the other 2. The people who dislike Opeth are Slipknot types. They listen to stuff they will hate in 10 years.

5 out of 5 stars Among the Best.......2007-03-09

I got into Opeth through some of their more recent releases - Damnation, Blackwater Park and Deliverance. I am a huge Steven Wilson fan (of Porcupine Tree), and he produced these three albums. I was somehow led to believe that Steven Wilson was largely responsible for the emergence of Opeth, and for a while, I didn't really bother with their earlier work.

Then, I saw that Morningrise was on sale at my local cd shop and decided to bite the bullet and get it. To say that I was pleasantly surprised would be an understatement. Guitar layering and riffs are phenomenal. The entire album flows very well (really tough to pick the favorite track), and melodies are quite catchy. Some of the heavier guitars (not vocals) are similar to Dream Theater's heavier work. This album is much easier to get into than Deliverance, for instance. I can't wait to get the rest of Opeth's early cds!

2 out of 5 stars Not fully risen.......2007-02-14

Opeth is not the Opeth of today. There are little elements of progressiveness. The influence of Maiden is really heard, while the signature Opeth is not. That's what sets them apart, their uniqueness.

So...what we have is a standard issue of death metal that is on the verge of being great. It would not truly take place until "Blackwater Park" where Opeth would fully rise to greatness.

5 out of 5 stars death-progressive metal.......2007-02-14

That's the genre these guys have delved out for themselves. It's not progressive death metal, because it's not death metal except for the vocals and some of the heavier sections. Opeth's music ranges from soft acoustic to heavy, really heavy. They're one of those bands that are hard to hate. Even people who hate death metal vocals will have to admit the brilliance of this music (read: as in the brilliance of a jewel). Black Rose Immortal has got to be my one of my most favorite songs ever. It's progressive metal without the distracting prog elements like nonsensical time signature changeups or meandering keyboard sections. As a metal fan, my complaint is that this album starts off very heavy, but the last track slows way down, so it's overall kind of a let down. Still, I have a hard time marking off a full star for the pacing.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliance. Pure Brilliance........2007-02-10

While "Morningrise' is not near as well produced as the later albums would be, this is far more genuine. Their sound has changed so much since the days of 'Orchid' and 'Morningrise' that I can say, without a doubt, Opeth will never reach as high as they did here.

Later albums such as 'Blackwater Park' and 'Ghost Reveries' would lean more to the progressive side of metal (which is perfectly fine), but their earlier albums had a much more primal feel to them. The guitar lines were more prominent (and absolutely jaw-dropping) over-shadowing the bass and drums just enough to avoid sounding muddy.

Vocals are quite different then on the later albums, too. The growl isn't as deep and sounds almost Black Metalesque in comparison...a good kind of Black Metalesque. The thing with 'Morningrise' is that the whole is far greater then the sum of it's parts, and the picture on the front very astutely matches the over-arching tone of the album. Very fine artwork indeed.

For some seriously awesome riffs be sure to check out the opening theme riff to 'Night and the Silent Water' and really anything from the mid-section of 'Black Rose Immortal'.

Visceral, technical, and enduring...this one is a keeper. One of metal's all-time best.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS BAND!.......2006-05-19

Opeth is an excellent metal band their categorized as a death metal band with both clean and distorted vocals. The musicians in Opeth are masters at their instruments. All of Opeth's albums are great so you can never go wrong with buying any of their cd's.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Opeth album.......2006-04-08

I just first listened to it yesterday and once I was done, my only words were, "That was awesome." I was blown away! This album was heavy and melodic and very poetic. Much better than they are today(they're still good, though). Below are my ratings for each song.

1. Advent 12/10, My second favorite song(right next to "The Night And The Silent Water"). The fading in riff is awesome and very fast, then it slows down a bit but picks right back up and it pretty much heavy for the rest of the song.

2. The Night And The Silent Water 100/10, My favorite song on this album, the opening riff is very doomy. About half of this song is acoustic and melodic, the rest is heavy. On the last two minutes of the song the riff is awesome and the Mikael Akerfedlt whispers are very eery(he whispers near the end of the song). The song eventually fades out afterwards.

3. Nectar 8/10, Great song, very heavy. It starts out with some sort of hip-hopish drumbeats but though this song is great, it never really caught my attention.

4. Black Rose Immortal 10/10, The longest song on this album, it's 20:14 long! Though it is long it is great, it loses my interest for a second and flys by.

5. To Bid You Farewell 11/10, AWESOME ballad. The lyrics are amazing here. The song is acoustic and the vocals are very emotional. I love it!

Well that is my opinion on this AMAZING album, I hope this was helpful. Goodbye everyone!

5 out of 5 stars Weirdo Music.......2005-03-29

From Celtic riffs in "Black Rose Immortal" to the saddest little accoustic part ever, ("The Night and the Silent Water" around the 6:30 mark), Opeth leads us on a journey of what can be accurately described as Weirdo Music. Irish metal, heh, heh, heh...

The production is rough to say the least; the bass sounds somewhat like a twanging rubber band. However, I love the gritty sound! Why? Because it gives the album an anciently obscure feel, like the true musical illustration of the archaic lakeside house on the cover. Just as effective as Opeth's newer, clearer sound, I think. Perfect for being a REAL freak at high school or scaring the Mormon neighbors.

5 out of 5 stars BLOWN AWAY!.......2005-01-26

The Amazon.com samples do not do this band any justice(espesially when you only hear 30 seconds on 10min. songs). Opeth must be one of the most musically talented bands on the planet. Their music is on so many levels it's impossible to categorize. And hearing the Death Metal parts of their music on these 30 second samples is only the begining and there is so much more to these songs. It is like hearing poetry when you listen to them. AMAZING! MUST BUY! Try Albums like Orcid, Morningrise, My Arms, Your Hearst. Try These before buying the newer albums.

5 out of 5 stars one of opeths classic albums.. i love it!.......2005-01-20

Morningrise is one of Opeth's best albums, althought not my favorite, it is still great. Many people call this their masterpiece, and I guess I one could say it is, but I prefer Blackwater Park and Still Life much more. Anyway, the songs on this album are great, and overall much better than Orchid which came before this album. They are actually songs! haha, unlike orchid which felt kinda like a jumble of great music. Here's a run down of the tracks...
Advent- a good opener... 5/5
The Night and the Silent Water- not one of my favorite opeth songs, but ok 4/5.
Nectar- pretty cool song 5/5.
Black Rose Immortal- one of Opeth's masterpiece, although the opening bass line is kinda funny, it reminds me of like... a midget dance, check it out. 6/5
To Bid you Farewell- my favorite song on this album... i love th e heavy part at the end, its kinda like A fair judgement on deliverance, just maybe a bit better. 6/5

5 out of 5 stars An epic album of mesmerising brilliance. But not an easy listen........2006-09-30

Opeth have over the years become a bit of a phenomenon. They have garnered an extraordinary amount of praise for their unique mix of progressive metal, doomy atmospheres and death metal. They've managed to infiltrate many groups outside of the general metal population without even trying where so many others have failed, yet never fallen to commercialisation or decreased the quality of their output. Yet due to the almost obsessive nature of this praise, there are many others who will criticise everything they release in an attempt to impede the almost inevitable cult following they have, as though the high level of worship might negate the respect for their own infatuations. I for one cannot say enough good things about these Swedes and their music. But I don't feel as though I've just got caught up in the storm or jumped on the bandwagon so to speak. After all, I've been listening to and adoring their music for over 10 years. But this album in particular is the one that I find a bit more challenging to blindly recommend.

"Morningrise" is often thought of as Opeth's best album. Considering the extremely impressive discography that the band has, that's a big call. And it's not one that I agree with. I am fully in agreement with statements such as "this album contains some of their best riffs ever" and "some of their most proficient music can be found on this album" etc etc. There are so many sections on the album that make me nod my head with respect and admiration. But then there is also many times where I find my focus drifting off. These tracks are just too long and contain far too many elements with no common theme to distinguish one track from another. Every track is over 10 minutes long and every track contains amazing riffs and melodies, beautiful acoustic sections and fantastic vocals. But then every track tends to get...I hate to say it...a little bit boring. That's really the difference between Opeth's first two albums and everything that follows. They became much more focused with their output, utilizing more natural song structures and not using every single piece of inspiration they come up with, no matter how good they are from this time onwards.

So why do I still give "Morningrise" such a high mark. Well, even though I've clearly stated that it's not my favourite Opeth release (that would have to be either "Still Life" or "Blackwater Park") it's still a highly enjoyable experience that's light years above a high percentage of everything else out there. It's just not one that I can directly focus on for too long. Whereas I normally like to close my eyes and focus on music or read the lyrics while listening, I find it far more successful to listen to this album while doing something else or simply chilling out. I guess it just doesn't connect with me emotionally the way most of their music does, so I feel a little detached from the experience. But there's just too much quality musicianship and superb sections to call it anything but classy. I will make the strange comparison to movies such as "Dances With Wolves" and "Lawrence in Arabia". While both movies I consider to be classic epics, neither of them are the type of experience you would put yourself through regularly. They are extremely long and your attention span will most likely be tested, yet the moments of brilliance and overall feel make them highly worthwhile, if only for once every now and then.

If you're a fan of the band, then you will most likely already have this album. If you're new to Opeth then I don't think this is really the place to start, and are better off checking out "Blackwater Park" or "Ghost Reveries". They're simply more accessible than this epic, textural piece of composition.

5 out of 5 stars My second favorite opeth album.......2006-06-12

Before I bought this I read all the reviews about how great it was. When I got it I was initially disappointed. I kept listening knowing that it would grow some. And grow it did. Not enough to replace Orchid as my favorite, but it came pretty close. I would say that this Cd takes a more progressive turn compared to Orchid. The primary difference is that the acoustic sections are longer and more frequent. Also Mikeal's singing voice makes a improvement. It still has a very similar sound to Orchid. This is probably because many of these songs were originally intended to be on Orchid. Including Black Rose Immortal.

Advent 10 All around great song as usual. The first few seconds are silent, and all of a sudden the twin guitar riffs splash into the mix. At about 3:20 the first acoustic section of significance begins. What I really like about this is the prominence of the bass. Most metal bands are weak when it comes to bass. Opeth are one of the metal bands that are excellent. Especially in this Cd. The bass almost has a bubbly type of sound. It is a really unusaul type of bass for a metal song, but I like it. As far as my favorite part of the song goes I would say the last 5 minutes. It concludes with a fading acoustic section that progressively dwindles into oblivion.

The Night and Silent Water 10 This one waste no time getting to the metal. Great riffs open this one. One thing I really appreciate is Opeth's ability to produce astounding complex sound structures that will melt into tranquil moments of contemplation. Than reemerge without the transition being abrupt. One example is in the beginnings we have buzzing riffs that dissipate into simple melodies around 4:20 into the song. Meanwhile you get lost while focusing on the peace of the moment. Than between 8:00 to 8:22 the acoustics drift into a riff unannounced and without warning. My taste in music and metal vary considerably. This is the type I prefer to listen to when there is no distractions. If you just casually listen to this cd the subtle nuances that make it great will be lost on you. On the other hand if you put effort into listening you may grasp the purpose of the sounds that make up the song. Probably the most amazing thing about this cd is that if you were to strip these songs down to a few pieces and riffs you would create a pretty good song on its own. There are so many changes within a song that you could probably make about 30 songs out of the 5 main ones on here.

Nectar 10 This one starts with a brief little splattering of drum beats. At about 3:08 everything stops, and for about 10 seconds a beautiful bass solo. A minute later a beautiful guitar solo appears. At about 9:00 showers of riffs spring forth, while simultaneously there are these throbbing beeping bass sounds that go really well with the riff.

Black Rose Immortal 20/10 I don't see how one can be a true Opeth fan if they haven't heard this masterpiece. I consider this my second favorite Opeth song after "Forrest of October". My third being "God heads Lament". This to me is like the "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" of this generation. There is really so much to this song that it would be foolish to try to dissect it, and review it piece by piece. However I am quite foolish so I will just mention a few parts that I consider the highlights. My favorite part is at 9:00 minute following the best solo of the cd. All the music stops and it leaves Mikeal Akerfeldt quietly alone crooning some of his best singing on the cd. Following this there is a beautiful instrumental that sounds kind of Celtic to me. I think I may have mentioned this in another review that I wish Opeth would use various types of instruments more often. They excel when they do. I always thought that a flute would go great on this cd. And my final favorite part is the last couple minutes. They have one of there most sinister riffs in the last minute.

To bid you Farewell 7.5 Finally a song on this cd that's not perfect mean it is still really good, but it is not up to par with some of opeth's finer soft songs. My favorites are Harvest, In my time of need, and most of all Isolation years. Like I said it is still a good song especially the last half.

Eternal Soul Torture.7.5 I wont review this because I am lazy. Good song albeit more primitive to the actual songs here. My favorite thing about this song is Mikeal's singing. I would go on if it weren't for my damn carpal tunnel syndrome.

The last thing I must say is buy this cd and give it a chance to work and weave its magic upon you.

5 out of 5 stars opeth... need i say more?.......2004-11-10

although morningrise, isn't my favorite record of their's, it is still a must own album for anyone who likes opeth, i'm not going to give some "talk out of my behind" review like others have, but one of my favorite tracks they ever did is on this record; "to bid you farewell." but then again opeth hasn't made a track i didn't really like.

4 out of 5 stars One of thier best works ever!.......2003-09-24

I don't think Morningrise is Opeths BEST work, but it's definitly up there with Blackwater Park and Damnation. Now, even though it's one of their best albums most people will be turned off by it at first. I honestly was not the impressed with it the first time I heard it. But take my advice, over time and repeated listens this one will be on top of your favorite albums list, I'm about 99.999% sure of that.
Opeth takes a step forward from their 1st record "Orchid" and begins to stucture songs better and not make them so instrumental (this is further done in their 3rd album "My Arms Your Hearse" where the record becomes more Progressive then Black). Michael Akerfeldts vocals also sound better, the death and clean vocals are better evened out. There are only 5 songs on this and the record comes in at over an hour in length, no song is under 10 minutes.
The album kicks off great with "Advent", definitely one of Opeths greatest songs. The acoustics in this are some of the most beautiful you'll ever hear, as a matter of fact the entire album has some of the most beautiful acoustics you'll ever hear. Anyway, afterwards comes "Night and the Silent Water," not as good as "Advent" but still amazing, most especially the acoustic interlude in the middle. The 3rd track OVERALL isn't one of Opeths best, I was and honestly still am a little bored by this one. Although during the middle of the song comes another acoustic interlude which saves it and makes it semi-great, the bass work is also amazing and the best off the album on this song. After that there is the 20+ minute "Black Rose Immortal." Now, being Opeths longest song ever I liked it a lot, Loved it even at some parts, but it did have its slow moments. Opeth sort of teases us at the last few minutes of the song because just when you think it's going to end it doesn't, and it does this tease about 3 times towards the end of the song, but does end with a hauntingly great guitar lick. Track 5- "To Bid You Farewell"- An Opeth CLASSIC. No Opeth fan should be without this song, it is in my opinion the most "structured" song on the record as the passages from electric to acoustic are smooth and everything is even, it's not too long or too short either. The Bonus track is something Opeth wrote and rewrote and finally became Advent. The production is horrid on this bonus track and it brings down the album as a whole, but you can always just hit the Stop button after track 5.
I didn't really have a problem with anything on this record, the only thing that was slightly off (but not really that bad at all) was the way Opeth went into and out of thier acoustic interludes. An electric guitar would suddenly stop, and a second or 2 would go by until the acoustic came in, not very smooth transistions at all, I mentioned them earlier how on track 4, the song never seemed to end when it really should have because a guitar would do this tease and stop, then start up again with something that sounds competely different. It's done on Advent but doesnt hinder the song at all after you get used to it, it's also done smoother on track 2 and 3. This is probably why the album takes a lot more patience to get into than any other Opeth album.
I have to recommend this album, it's too amazing and gorgeous not to, but I wouldn't recommend it as an opening album for anyone looking to get into this band. There is nothing like coming home after a stressful day and playing Morningrise, a gorgeous record.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing CD, not-so-amazing bonus track........2003-05-13

If you're reading this review, chances are you already know that Morningrise is an amazing album. You probably even own a copy already, and just want to know if it is worth the extra money to have the one bonus track that is on this reissue. The answer, sadly, is no. The bonus track, Eternal Soul Torture, is a basically a poor quality demo recording of a song that ended up being incorporated into another track on this album. It really doesn't add anything to the album. In fact, it almost takes away from the brilliant work that is Morningrise. If I were to review the regular edition of the album I would give it 5 stars easily. Because of the poor quality of the bonus track, and the high price of the reissue, I am rating this edition at 4 stars. I would recommend it only to those people (like me) who are completists and have to own every single Opeth song.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best---a Must Have.......2003-03-12

If you can get your hands on this gem then by all means do so. This is one of those must have CD's in anyones collection that is into the short lived genre of music known as Shoegaze. This one is a a must have. Swirling, spacey, trippy music, with awesome female and male vocals. I had the chance to catch them live and it was a show that will live with me forever.

    5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Noise.......2002-02-14

Swirling guitars, soaring vocals & silent drums all melting together to produce a beautiful noise... This is music to listen to on a sunny summer afternoon watching the sun go down - absolutally beautiful....

4 out of 5 stars Easiest of the rare singles to find; worth every penny..........2001-04-25

Yes, "Morningrise" follows up after 'Just for a Day', and predates 'Souvlaki', but has as many similarities to on as much as the other.

'She Calls' was a favourite song for the band to perform live, and it's just as beautiful here in it's studio incarnation. 'Losing Today' is definitely more ambient in feel and sound, but still isn't half bad--and the title track wouldn't have felt out of place on the debut LP.

It's definitely worth picking up; only receiving 4 stars because it is MERELY a single, and not a complete album, and as such, however excellent, it's merely branches of a much more phenomenal body of work. See if you can hook onto 'Blue Day', which collects the band's first three singles, and puts them into a bit better perspective.

4 out of 5 stars Through poppy fields and icy dawns.......2000-07-31

Yes, I can tell you something about this mysterious CD-single. Not dissimilar to related bands like Lush, Ride, or Cocteau Twins, some of Slowdive's best material has appeared on singles and EPs. But it's very difficult to find CD-singles by Slowdive since the band is defunct and has been dropped by Creation Records after the release of its third album "Pygmalion". "Morningrise" is a 3-track EP which features the title track, "She calls", and "Losing today". I think these songs are very good and a little more colorful than those of SD's first album "Just for a day". "Losing today" prefigures the ambient-oriented sound of "Pygmalion". The lyrics are a bit wrecked with depression ("She's waiting for her heart to break"), but Rachel's airy voice breathes enough life into the ambitious soundscapes. I guess Slowdive have released about eight EPs and CD-singles, an extract of seven songs from the first three EPs("Slowdive", "Morningrise", "Holding our breath") can be found on the compilation "Blue day". "Outside your room" contains two tracks from "Souvlaki", a remix version of "Souvlaki Space Station", and the fantastic non-album track "So tired". Slowdive's last EP release "5EP (In mind - Remixes)" rather leans towards techno/dark ambient sounds. In retrospect, it's not easy to understand why Slowdive was such a short-lived (if also prolific) venture.

4 out of 5 stars First Slowdive Material Released.......2000-04-29

This is Slowdive's first album. It is very good. Ironically, the song "Slowdive" is the best of the bunch. Rachel does most of the singing on this one...

5 out of 5 stars The best mix of acoustic and extreme parts!.......1999-10-13

The first time I've heard it I've been shocked! I never heard such brilliant effort with mixing acoustic melancholic parts together with extreme guitar storms and growlings. This is mostly sweddish death metal but wonderful acoustic parts make them special and unique.
