Great CD, especially for a tribute album.......2007-06-24
Stand out tracks are easily 12 Years Coming's version of Shout At The Devil, Come On & Dance by Palor & Jessie Seely's Afraid. Those tracks stand out not only for their originality, but also for their production, sounding like bigger budget releases.
All the classic crue tunes are covered here (oun fully intended), as well as some of the lesser known releases.
All in all, well worth the price for die hard Crue fans, & even casual fans might find some of the tunes worth owning the album for.

Customer Reviews:
"THE" METAL ALBUM OF 2002.......2002-08-26
Ex Fifth Angel/Atlantis Rising guitarist James Byrd returns under the moniker 'Byrd' for his second release in two years - ANTHEM. The album sees Byrd retain the talented line up of vocalist Michael Flatters and multi-instrumentalist Brian Hutchinson that worked to stunning effect on last years 'Flying Beyond The 9'.
'Anthem' sees the basic symphonic metal approach of 'Flying Beyond The 9 built upon with more guitars, aggression and a wider range of styles. This is one very powerful album with a production that makes everything crystal clear, bombastic and sonically pleasing.
The basic style of the album can be seen as a mix of Byrd's trademark virtuoso guitar and overall sound as heard on 'Crimes Of Virtuosity' and 'Flying Beyond The 9', but taken to the next level.
'Anthem' displays a very cohesive set of songs than all work incredibly well as one sonic movement. Yet set the cd player to random and you are guaranteed a treat wherever it stops, this album really is that good.
There are a lot of musical styles on the album which range from rampant neo-classical 'Only Love', to Deep Purple/Rainbow esque rockers 'Messages From Home', to AOR style balladry 'Some Day' . This is then completely mixed up by the Pomp attack of 'Omen', and full on metal brutality of 'Killing Machine'. There really is something for all rock fans no matter what your taste in sub genres.
On the guitar front Byrd has outdone himself again. His tone is the clearest it has been and whilst showing restraint on the solo front, there are enough fretboard adventures to please the most hardcore guitar nut.
This is album is certainly worthy of a purchase, and with the right record company promotion has the quality to see Byrd head from the underground to the major rock appeal. 'Anthem' shows that James Byrd is one of todays most talented writers and performers so do yourself a favour and check 'Anthem' out a.s.a.p.

Jesus Christ!!!.......2001-11-26
This is an amazing CD!!! Just about all the songs are excellent, with very few exceptions. Buy it, now!!!
Remember when Ozzfest was good?.......2001-10-29
Well you get 2 good bands on this CD, BLS and I'll give you one guess who the other one is. Anyway Sabbath and Black Label Society keep playing metal the way it should be, and it's dissapointing they have to be on a CD with the rest of these horrible bands.
The next best thing to being there.......2001-09-06
This CD was extra special as I was at the Alpine Valley venue where they taped some of the songs. Not an ounce of energy was wasted in the taping. Each of the bands come through rocking as if this is a private performance, and it was nice to finally be able to hear Slipknot and not worry about getting hit by a flying plastic beer bottle filled with dirt. If you couldn't be at the concert, buy this CD.
For the love of god why??.......2001-08-24
The Union Underground?....American Head Charge?....Papa f'n Roach!!!!.. on the same stage with the Ozzman? Soulfly, Machine Head, and Fear Factory fit the bill in the past. I would love to see bands like Nothingface, Meshuggah, and Candiria on Ozzfest. But instead there are clowns like Otep and the aforementioned. I enjoyed the tracks by Slipknot and Mudvayne. I think both of these bands are a bit gimmick-oriented, but their songs rock in a nice and easy way (for true complexity, see Candiria or Dillenger Escape Plan). Nonpoint had a pretty good studio release, but sound very weak on the album. Same story with Disturbed and Linkin Park. The Papa Roach track "Blood Brothers" solidified in my mind that they are one of the absolute worst acts in music today. I have no idea how they gained popularity...hold on...oh yeah....take some TRL, add some "my parents don't understand me my life is so tough oh god i have pimples", lather, rinse, and repeat. Attention roaches, the Fresh Prince Will Smith covered this material about a decade and a half ago. And he made us laugh about it. Well, this was less of a review and more of a soapbox delivery, i apologize. Final word, save your money, this is hardly essential.
This album is 100% pure, hardcore... rock and roll? What?.......2001-08-16
Wow, what is there to say? The first thing I found out from this album is, if you're playing Ozzfest, you need to start out your act by cursing at the audience and telling them to get up (apparantly they all fall asleep or something). Then you play a really loud guitar with a horrible bass line while the lead "singer" screams very loudly, taking a moment to pause and tell the audience stuff like "I want you to kill the person next to you!"
So, does this sound like what you want to hear? If it is, run out and buy this album RIGHT NOW because this is right up your alley. I just hope your not a fan of of artists actually singing their songs, because the only one who does that on this album is the Ozzman himself. Everyone else just screams, and several of them sound ill when they do it. I was very disappointed with the CD. I love heavy mosh-pit music that makes you wanna jump up and down and cheer, but where the hell did this stuff come from? Apparantly, if you want to make it into the rock scene today, you don't need talent, you just need to be loud and violent. And that's exactly what this album is: loud and violent.

Customer Reviews:
Under appreciated prog metal..........2004-04-10
This is the second "archives" release after Psychotic Waltz disbanded. A very unique band (at least in the prog metal circles), with words like complex, dreamy, psychedelic coming to mind when listening to their albums. This is not the place to start your Psychotic Waltz collection. Rather start with the re-releases of their proper albums and then come back here. The first seven songs are actually a suite written by guitarist Brian McAlpine, inspired by a set of paintings (which can be found in the booklet). The music on these pieces is trying to be ambient, lots of keyboards, certain moments stand out but generally it tends to sound as background music. The two next pieces are more interesting (composed by both guitarists of the band) that bring Darkstar to mind. This time keyboards function as a backdrop for fluid and layered guitar playing. And now for the real treat, previously unreleased Psychotic Waltz live tunes and covers. Buddy Lackey gives a passionate performance on 'Disturbing the Priest', while the live tracks (even though of bad production quality) show what this band was capable and why it has this cult status amongst prog metal fans. The songs here are taken from their debut and are all excellent. Fantastic guitar interplay between Rock and McAlpin, compex rhythm section and intricate time signatures, each song is a mind trip. This is not your typical pompous and self indulgent prog, it is cerebral heavy music without any excess.
Surely this is not worth the 5-star rating (poor sound quality, the rather tiresome first suite) but the sentimental value is very high for Psychotic Waltz fans to ignore. Listen to this band's music, it's definitely rewarding and worth it.

I like the fact that this cd had 2disc with approximately 30 songs to listen to & only 2 or 3 were below average. If you love thrash metal than this is a good buy.
Old School Metal Compilation For The Millenium .......2005-01-19
This is one of my favorite metal compilations in my collection. I brought it in late 2002. So I don't take up at lot of time, I brought this all for the same reason I bought the Death Metal's Greasts Hits CD and I'm glad I did.
Now for my review. This is a double CD compilation or collected time capsule comprised mostly of metal bands from Roadrunner Records' old school metal roster. Though released by House Of Darkness, the majority of the bands here are from Roadrunner's old school band roster. Some of these bands are Gorguts, Fear Factory, Sepultura, Deicide, Suffocation, Obituary, Biohazard and Type O' Negative among others. So this is just another treasure to add to your metal compilation collection and this release gets the thumbs up. So pick it up, take it home and crack it up.
