Customer Reviews:
A Decent Debut From Ex-Dark Angel Guitarist Jim Durkin's New Band.......2006-03-19
There are two other reviews for LET THE VIOLENCE BEGIN. One review gave the album one star, the other gave it five. So the reviews range from one extreme to the other. The truth lies somewhere in the middle. This isn't a great album, but it isn't a terrible one either.
I was excited to get LET THE VIOLENCE BEGIN because it features former Dark Angel guitarist Jim Durkin, one of the best riff-writers in metal. Slayer were influenced by Dark Angel. The other band members are Charlie Silva on bass guitar and vocals, and Al "Mayhem" Mendez on drums. Silva has a typical death-metal vocal style (i.e. he sounds like the Cookie Monster from Sesame Street). Mendez is a so-so drummer. The album's production isn't that great. The guitar sound is a bit thin. Durkin wrote all of the music and a high percentage of the lyrics. Many of his riffs are very good.
There are six songs on the album, and I found four of them to be good or very good. The instrumental intro to the first song, "Blood To Free A Soul," reminded me a bit of "Harbinger Of Doom," the intro to Dark Angel's 1986 masterpiece, DARKNESS DESCENDS. One of the tracks I didn't like was "Unholy Invocations," which has an odd verse riff. The other was "Demonic Celebration," which just came across as filler. All things considered though, this is a decent debut album.
I went on the band's website recently. LET THE VIOLENCE BEGIN came out in 2000. Since then, Durkin has put together a whole new line-up. The band is now a five-piece, including a female vocalist. They're working on new material, so hopefully they'll have a new album out soon. I'm sure they'll correct the shortcomings of their debut album.
NOW MY EARS ARE BLEEDING.......2002-11-27
I thought this band would be as good as they claim to be. NOT SO. This has got to be one of the WORST bands I have ever heard and I'm a fan of metal. The guitars are extremely wimpy sounding, the vocals are boring and lacking.
Do yourself a huge favor and don't waste your money on this poor excuse for a band. I'm sorry I did!
this is one damned dream i'd love to have each night!.......2000-12-29
dreams of damnation, a band with 2 ex-dark angel members, have released this masterpiece. the cd may only have 6 songs on it, but it is worth listening to over, and over again. i'd recommend it to any metalhead out there.
