Slow Start on Early Tracks becomes a Winner on the Latter Tracks.......2007-02-26

Bon Jovi's first greatest hits album is entitled "Cross Road". The title is appropriate because by the time of its release in 1994, the group had really reached a true crossroads in their career. Bon Jovi had rode the wave of the hard rock/metal-like influence on the pop music scene in the late 1980s. By the time of 1992's "Keep the Faith", they still were doing what they do best - but now Alternative Music was beginning to dominate the pop scene. Therefore, I think its very appropriate that the group put out "Cross Road" and look back to determine what the next steps should be in their career. Following "Cross Road", Bon Jovi did move into another direction with the release of 1995's "These Days". While not as big a commercial success as what they had gotten used to, Bon Jovi did go into a different direction - delivering a "darker" album as opposed to the uplifting rock and power ballads that had become a trademark of the band. Following "These Days", the new "path" Bon Jovi took would be put on hold. It would be five years before they would release 2000's "Crush". When I first started listening to "Crush", I got very frustrated because I felt the album was weak, however this would be an album that deserved a full listen - because after getting past the first four tracks, I would discover that "Crush" would truly show that Bon Jovi had progressed along the path they took at the "Cross Road". It would show that Bon Jovi had matured and expanded their horizons.

The best way to understand how this album "turns the corner" is to review each track in order:

"It's My Life": This was the album's big hit single. For the most part, it had the traditional Bon Jovi feel. Anthem-like vocals by Jon Bon Jovi combined with heavy guitars by Richie Sambora penetrating keyboards by David Bryan. The song could be considered a loose sequel to "Livin on a Prayer" with the references to Tommy and Gina. This song's ok, but it wasn't a song that captured my imagination.

"Say It Isn't So": This song didn't have the Arena Rock quality that made Bon Jovi famous. This song had way too much of a pop feel to it. I quickly grew disinterested in this song as it also did little to excite me.

"Thank You For Loving Me": This ballad just wasn't the power-ballad that I had heard Bon Jovi do in the past - namely it lacked the passion. Again, I was disinterested. Slowly this album was losing me.

"Two Story Town": While musically this song didn't have me doing handstands, I did like the lyrics on this song. It deals with living in a town with the "same old sights" and "same old sounds".

It is on track 5 that the album really turns the corner....

"Next 100 Years": This is the best song on the album. Everyone shines on this album. While Tico Torres is going to have his moments on drums and Sambora is unbelievable on guitar, there is so much more. Mid-way through the song, it takes on an orchestral quality to it. Also listen for the incredible guitar work toward the end of the song. The song even has that "Arena Rock" anthem-like quality toward the end. I love the way this track switches gears.

"Just Older": Although this song may be slightly "toned down" musically from their earlier stuff, this song demonstrates the true passion that became a trademark. Torres shines on the drums on this one.

"Mystery Train": This song also has a softer feel that Bon Jovi fans are used to, but once again the passion is back. The boys really got the rhythm right on this song. In the "Mystery Train" is actually referring to a woman who is a "ride on a Mystery Train...to a place you've never been before." This is definitely one of the strongest songs on the collection.

"Save the World": This song has a lot of the classic Bon Jovi elements of a power ballad - uplifting lyrics and passionate vocals. The song deals with someone who isn't smart or distinguished, yet is someone who can offer a lot to the world.

"Captain Crash and the Beauty Queen from Mars": This song seemed to combine a retro sounding 1950s/1960s sound with some good modern electric guitars. This song has a very different feel from the classic Bon Jovi sound, but I give the boys credit for being able to expand their horizons.

"She's a Mystery": Another song that follows the classic Bon Jovi formula for power ballad. Once again the band compares a woman to a mystery, but instead of comparing the woman to a mysterious train ride, the woman in this case is a mystery herself.

"I Got the Girl": This song follows the classic Bon Jovi hard-rocking formula. The soft start segues into heavy guitars perfectly. It might not have the deepest lyrics, but it fits the classic mold of a true "Arena Rock" sound.

"One Wild Night": While this song also had a hard-rocking sound, I didn't quite like this one as much as "I Got the Girl". The opening sounds music sets the stage to contrast a "wild night" with spending an evening in front of some classic-styled television. While I didn't like this song, I still think this may appeal to the deep Bon Jovi fans. I personally didn't get the "James Brown" references at the end.

I was disappointed that the liner notes did not contain any of the lyrics. Overall, despite the weak start to this album, I was satisfied with the five year wait for "Crush". If songs 5-12 were the songs that would comprise this collection, I would still be happy. The combination of the classic elements with some newer sounds made for this a very good album. I would definitely recommend this collection.

Mediocre Record, But It DOES Have Its Moments .......2006-07-10

With 'Bon Jovi,' '7800,' 'Slippery When Wet,' 'New Jersey, 'Blaze of Glory,' 'Keep the Faith,' and even 'These Days,' I can say that for the most part, I find the entire record listenable. Sadly, all good things come to an end, or at least a pause. 'Destination Anywhere' is what I consider Bon Jovi's low point, but it does have a few outstanding moments. And that's pretty much how I feel about 'Crush.' 'Crush' is not up there with '7800,' 'Slippery When Wet,' 'New Jersey,' or even 'Keep the Faith.' That said, 'Crush' DOES have its moments. 'It's My Life' is a moderately intense song that seems more powerful than it really is. (But that's alright!) I couldn't get into 'Say It Isn't So.' 'Thank You For Loving Me' is a memorable slower song. And even at this point in his career Bon Jovi has a way of rescuing his songs that may sound clicheish. 'Two Story Town' is not the greatest song, but it is respectable. I could not get into 'Next 100 Years.' 'Just Older' may or may not hold your attention. But I still consider it one of the better moments. 'Mystery Train' is what I consider another low point. 'Save the World' is another high point of the record. It's a slower song, but it does have its beauty. I could not get into 'Captain Crash...,' 'She's a Mystery,' or 'I Got the Girl.' But on this 9th record, Bon Jovi saved the best for last. 'One Wild Night' gives a crowning 'Slippery When Wet' tone to this record. I'm even tempted to say that 'One Wild Night' is worth the price of admission. In this so so record of Bon Jovi's, it is easy to see why he maintains his popularity over time. (1) Even though he changes his direction, he still remembers his original fans and gives them at least something on his newer records. ('One Wild Night.') (2) Like 'Destination Anywhere,' I consider this a mediocre record. But, even his mediocre records have their moments. And in all honesty, if we like a group, we should be willing to admit that they are human and not every record they make can be a masterpiece.

I've never been much of a hair-metal fan, and, except for "Livin' On a Prayer", much of a Bon Jovi fan either. That being said, this is one of the best albums that I've ever bought. As a mainstream rock/pop fa, the songs on "Crush" are instantly appealing for their hooks, catchy choruses, and tap-your-foot feeling. "It's My Life" has one of the most memorable refrains around; "Say It Isn't So" has a great, catchy guitar intro; "Two Story Town", "Next 100 Years", and "Captain Crash..." are all great songs in their own right. In "Crush", Bon Jovi has made an album that you have to sing along with, an album that is th eperfect mainstream rocker, and, most importantly, an album that is instantly likeable. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy.

The Complete Piano Music of Scott Joplin.......2007-06-08

John Arpin does a great job with these pieces. The songs carry a consistent sound and are played very close to as-written, which comes and goes with old ragtime pieces. The stamping on Stop-Time Rag doesn't have a consistent sound to it, can be a little distracting. Everything else is great, overall I think that it's a great buy, I'm very happy with it.

Another Performer Rewrites Joplin's Masterpieces.......2007-05-31

Once again, another performer feels the need to rewrite the music of the King of Ragtime. Scott Joplin spins in his grave each and every time this recording is played.

Again, to those who believe that concert music is meant to be rewritten by each and every performer I ask, is the same treatment also acceptable for Chopin's and Rachmaninoff's music? Would "Moonlight Sonata" sound better if played at twice the tempo and with a reprise of the first Adagio movement thrown in at the end? Obviously, the answer to these questions is a resounding NO!, so why does one of America's greatest composers get such disrespect?

Interpretation is an integral part of every performance. Adding one's own notes, phrases and chords where none should be is not. Randomly changing the structure of the piece is not. Playing a piece at twice the indicated tempo is not.

One the plus side, the depth of this collection is outstanding. Joplin's lesser known pieces like "Harmony Club Waltz" really shine. The recording is decent in quality, although a bit bassy in places.

While its been stated before, I feel its worth repeating: Buy Joshua Rifkin's performances of Joplin in order to hear how the Master intended his pieces to sound.

Although all of the music is terrific it is rather a lot of a similar sound. I think I would have preferred 2 CD's of selected piano works of Scott Joplin. But I did get the music at a good price.

Ragtime Marvel.......2005-10-09

This collection of Scott Joplin's piano music is outstanding. As a lover of ragtime which was a prelude to jazz, I am thoroughly enjoying this collection. If you are not a lover of jazz, you may be a lover of ragtime. Jazz can sometimes be grating on the nerves, whereas ragtime lifts the spirit.

Complete, but poor quality.......2005-09-25

I have been learning some ragtime and wanted to hear more to find other selections to learn. Listened to Maple Leaf Rag, my favorite, first and was disappointed. Listened to others and was more disappointed. Maple flies - much faster than anyone would play it, you can't make out some of the phrases. And talk about ad libs - Tempo, dynamics, embelishments, nuances - I really think he plays some wrong notes too because he's going so fast. It's really a poor recording - and that's just on Maple Leaf. Others with "intros" start quick and then there's a grand pause, not a rest, but nearly a five second break. It's hard to argue how Joplin would have played it, but this is hardly anything I want to try to imitate. The only qualitating factor is the number of songs for the price. A lot of variety of a poor interpretation is only worth 3 stars. if that. Look for Rifkin or a copy that is as written to listen to first, then go for the ad libs and "artistic interpretations"

Astounding!.......2007-07-27

Amazingly, it is a British(!) company, Ace Records, that has earned the top honors for supplying collectors and casual listeners alike with the songs of the American top-100 from the golden (pre-invasion) era of rock and roll music. The demise of their "Golden Age of American Rock and Roll" series was, though to be expected, a traumatic let-down. But the folks at Ace have not abandoned us - they have other collections featuring music from the same era and their "Teenage Crush" series has managed to pick up where "Golden Age" left off. In this, the fifth volume, Ace pulls out all the stops. At least 16(!) of the included tracks are top-100 songs that have here-to-fore not appeared on quality legit CD. With so many of the congomerate music houses and independents alike practically abandoning the reissue of early rock-and-roll tunes, this piece from Ace gets fans of the genre standing and cheering. Just a few of the new-to-CD tunes include Frank Gari's "Lullaby of Love", no we're not the Everly Brothers Dean and Marc's "Tell Him No", "Ginnie Bell" from Paul Dino and Dale Hawkins' "A House, a Car and a Wedding Ring". Equally welcome tracks include Paul and Paula's "Young Lovers", Dick and DeeDee's "Young and In Love" and "Forget Me Not" from the Kalin Twins, all top-20 follow-up hits seldom, if ever, found on CD. And just so everybody can sing along with familiar lyrics, a few well-known tunes in the likes of Steve Lawrence's "Footsteps" and Dion's "Donna, the Prima Donna" round out the package. And Ace didn't stop with just searching out these rare tunes. The 24-page liner notes booklet has a wealth of information on each included track along with photos and illustrations further demonstrating the extraordinary effort put into this CD. Sonically, while a few of the tracks (1,11,16-18,20,21) may have been lifted from less than master tape quality sources, having these tracks in any reasonable sound quality would be an accomplishment. Several of the tracks do appear in stereo (2-4,7,9,10,13,23) and the remainder in remarkably clean mono. All told, this is a truly amazing effort on the part of Ace. We fans and collectors can only hope that the momentum continues and we don't have to wait another three years for another installment in this remarkable series of CD compilations.

If you have time for only one Firesign album before you die, make sure it's this one. A prescient, strangely psychedelic (no drugs involved) dissection of America & life in general that will leave you awake all night wondering about who or what's really in charge of this whole peculiar shebang anyway? But of course all their albums are like that. Must be those Canadian writers. The Firesign Theater is the closest thing America ever had to Monty Python, and we owe them a LOT for holding up an unflinching mirror to our loony culture.

functiional brain required.......2007-03-31

this is possibly the best comedy cd of all time. if one wishes to experience a delightful active mental journey as opposed to a more passive "the guy tells a joke and i listen to it" comedy club performance, this is the correct choice.
if you don't have the adventure gene in your body, you might find the performance to be scattered, difficult to follow, and more weird than funny.
one more thing. don't try to listen to this while driving. you will either miss the good stuff on the cd, or miss something important on the road. it would be a waste either way.

Hubba hubba George, what a suit!.......2006-08-28

Firesign Theater has been dismissed as a 60s relic, but listening to DCTD,HMTP repeatedly made me realize it's about the members' nostalgia for the pop culture of their childhood (the Henry Aldrich radio series, Archie comics, Korean War B-movies, etc.)rather than drugs and hippies. Little wonder that at the end of the second side, George Tirebiter reverts to a child running after an ice cream truck. It's also incredibly funny and compulsively quotable, their best sustained effort.

On a Scale of 1 to 5, This is a 27!.......2006-08-14

Being their third release, and the first three albums being their tightest work, Dwarf is often misunderstood. Disjointed snippets? Not in the slightest! Dwarf is the story of an aging George Leroy Tirebiter sitting in front of the television, flipping through the channels only to find each station is showing a story about different phases of his life (complete with commercials). I'm uncertain if George was about to die and this is how his life flashed before his eyes. Regardless, this fine piece of work is often quoted. Some material has dated better than other, but still an album that bears repeated listening in order to "catch" half of the jokes, puns, and one-liners that are woven into the text of the album. Buy this album, it is a requirement of the (aptly named) Department of Redundancy Department.

Everything You Know Is Wrong.......2006-07-15

OK. For the uninitiated, apologies for the arcane Firesign reference in the title. As for Dwarf, this is a fabulous CD. It is funny. It is smart. It is subtle. It is stupid. It is arcane. It is endlessly self-referential. It is nonsense.

Here's the problem with translating Dwarf to 21st century sensibilities: nobody has the time to figure out a 45-minute comedy routine that requires repeated listening. And yes, it requires figuring out.

I love this material, as obviously dated as it is. But if you don't have the patience to go with it, if you're looking for easy laughs, it's probably not for you. If you loved it once and aren't sure if you're going to love it again, you might find it ages as well for you as Pixie Stix. (Gak.) But if you got below the surface the first time, or you're willing to spend time with it now, go for it. Go back and don't crush that dwarf one more time.

And just for the record, it would've been five stars--if only this weren't a CD. Part of the original joke was the vinyl medium.

If contemporary Hollywood sometimes seems an industry bent on recycling itself into oblivion, it still manages the occasional welcome genre-tweaking. Writer-director John Stockwell takes one of the last bastions of salty machismo, the surf film, and gives it a distinct surfer grrrl slant. The resulting film's soundtrack eschews its own share of genre clichés--decades of fuzz guitar, OC ska/surf-punk bluster--for a club-savvy mix that veers from the lush, neo-psych edge of Lenny Kravitz's "If I Could Fall in Love" to Beenie Man's and Damian Marley's Jamaican dancehall grooves. This has got to be the Best Soundtrack I've heard so far. Normally with some Soundtracks, you get the odd songs that aren't worth listening to. But with Blue Crush, EVERY SONG is WiCkEd!!
There's a variety of awesome mixes of Rock-fast beat, and chilled-relaxed tunes that make you crank up the stereo! This CD would be even better if it had included more songs (eg. Youth of the Nation, POD)
The movie is also definately worth checking out!! -Comedy and some surfing action that just makes you wanna get out there and surf!!

do NOT start your summer without it!!!.......2005-05-03

When I first saw Blue Crush, the first thing I noticed was the fact that the music credits featured were mostly artists I've never even heard of. I recently went to the mall and chanced upon the CD and took it to the listening booth and found it very eclectic with different genres jammed together. Although I was disappointed that it only contained 11 songs, the soundtrack still delivered attitude, steering away from the stereotypical beach sounds, which was a complete relief.

The carrier single of the disc is rock god Lenny Kravitz's kick-ass song, "If I Could Fall In Love". The music video featured the three surfer girls in the movie. Definitely a good start for a rock intro. Following is the hard-driven techno dance remix of N.E.R.D.'s "Rock Star", a head-banging track good for beach house parties.

From rock, the CD moves to a beach staple sound - pure reggae and hiphop. It features upbeat tunes such as "Party Hard" and "Big Love", with wicked remixes like "And Be Loved", "Cruel Summer (Blestenation Mix)", and "Front 2 Back (Fatboy Slim Remix)". The songs create the feel of having a jammin' good time at the beach with your friends, so you definitely can't go wrong.

The ethereal Beth Orton gives a haunting contribution to the soundtrack in "Daybreaker", an upbeat trip-hop electronica song with evoking vocals and melody. Not to be outdone is the equally talented Nikka Costa with "Everybody Got Their Something".

Rounding off the disc are two beautiful ambient tracks to end a day at the beach. The creative duo of Zero 7 incorporates the perfect summer ballad in "Destiny" - a deliciously sensual chillout track which features the sublime vocals of Sia Furler, a perfect slow number to dance with your boo. And last but not the least, Doves gives a striking track in "Firesuite" - a mellow instumental that screams "beach lounge".

There were some songs, however, that should have been added to the soundtrack, most notably P.O.D., with their songs "Youth Of The Nation" (heard only on the surfing training of Anne Marie) and "Alive" (featured on the trailer). But all in all, Blue Crush OST packs a mean tsunami punch. A perfect addition to your CD collection!

A beautifully emotional and stirring work taken from the movie. I absolutly love the music. The only downside to the CD is the interview with Maurice Jarre. I felt this last 10 minutes of the CD would have been better spent on music and not dialogue. Still, a very nice piece.

Excellent collection - but there are re-sellers listed here that are selling this for as much $50 or $60. Yikes, most major retailers are selling this complete set for $18 - so beware.

A classic compilation.......2006-10-07

This collection is one of my most treasured possessions. (My father gave me the original 5-album set in the 70's when it was originally released on vinyl.)

This is the definitive collection of Scott Joplin's work. Richard Zimmerman provides wonderful performances that accurately reflect Joplin's intentions. (As evidence beyond my personal opinion, I submit the recent releases of digital recordings made from Joplin's piano rolls.)

A few points to consider regarding negative comments you may encounter in other reviews:
* This is a digital recording from an analog master. Lack of quality in the recording does not imply a lackluster performance.
* This is a complete collection. Some similarity is due to Joplin re-exploring melodic themes. But some is due to the fact that these are "rags". One might as well complain that all 50's doo-wop (or all 70's disco) sounds the same.
* Many pieces of the period exhibit formal musical structures, such as the marches of John Phillips Sousa. (Both Sousa and Joplin performed at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis.) Actually, Joplin is responsible for extending the formal boundaries of ragtime to concert waltzes (Bethena) and opera (A Guest of Honor, Treemonisha)
* This is probably one of the few collections which will include selections from "Treemonisha". It is my understanding that after the initial release, one of Joplin's descendants made a copyright claim that was upheld in court. (I presume the issue was that Joplin had to finance "Treemonisha" himself, and therefore the customary performance clearances did not cover those selections.)

For ragtime students and enthusiasts, this is a "must-have" collection at a very affordable price.

A dis-service to Joplin.......2006-02-01

Sadly, the only virtue this set possesses is completeness.

The pianist does not play Joplin's pieces "as written", the piano is of poor quality, and not properly in tune.

This is emphatically NOT the set to buy. A far better set, beautifully annotated and well played on a good concert grand piano, is the complete works played by Guido Nielsen on the Basta Label.

This set is a dis-service to Joplin and his music. He deserves better, and gets it elsewhere.

Unique .......2004-10-19

I have several cd sets of Joplin's music: Rifkin, Arpo, Nielsen, and Zimmerman. All have their excellent qualities. What sets Zimmerman's set apart is the inclusion of excerpts from Joplin's opera, Treemonisha---especially "A Real Slow Drag." Why the other sets do not include excerpts from Treemonisha, I don't know---because they are some of his most beautiful and joyful pieces of music. Of course, you can hear the orchestrated version of Treemonisha in the Houston Grand Opera recording, and it is spectacular. But Zimmerman's piano version, especially of "A Real Slow Drag," is not to be missed.

Great set.......2001-10-16

I guess this will be a rather one sided review. I have been a fan of Scott Joplin since I first learned to play a piano.

I was shocked to see that one reviewer thought it all sounded the same. How silly. All of Frank Sinatra's music sounds like Frank Sinatra. All of Led Zeppelin sounds like Led Zeppelin. So, if the songs were drastically different, I would question if the same author composed them. As it is, though, each song on this set is fantastic!!

I don't know that I have heard of Richard Zimmerman, and I was a little leary as to what I would be getting, I certainly was impressed. Without a doubt the best renditions of "Weeping Willow" and "Bethena" I have heard, and at least a dozen songs I didn't know Joplin wrote.

Elly Ameling now more available .......2007-03-07

I had a 33 rpm album of Elly Ameling singing Schubert lieder accompanied by piano and clarinet at times. It was one of my all time favorite albums so I have been disappointed that I have not been able to find it anywhere on CD.

Now I can just buy this excellent collection. So much music in one place! Since I confess that I am far from an expert on the rest of her records, I look forward to hearing her sing many other styles and composers.

I think it is silly to criticize her for not singing Wagner, for example, since her version of many songs, especially lieder, are nothing short of sublime. I would like to hear how many Wagnerians sing Schubert or Mozart.

I doubt if they could approach the skill and soul with which Elly Ameling sings lieder.

Delight in every note.......2006-03-10

To speak as briefly as possible about this superb collection from an equally superb singer, what can I say but that Ms Ameling possessed a voice that shone with radiant warmth and star-like shimmer? And unlike many another light lyric soprano, Elly Ameling was possessed of a very high standard of musicianship, considerable intelligence, and a sort of immediate charm that captivates the listener.

So many of her recordings have still to be released on CD, but this 5CD-set goes some way towards remedying the situation. The repertoire spans a wide variety - French mèlodies, Lieder, light-hearted "sentimental" songs, Bach, etc. - and in each piece, Ms Ameling shows that quality of pearl-like beauty. It is a beauty which is also extremely pretty - a beauty of voice that is never overbearing and over-ripe, but perfectly blossoming upon the tree of inspiration.

I recommend this set unequivocally. It truly is sheer delight.

While they last..........2005-05-17

Elly Ameling held the quiet stage for recitals of great artistry and dignity for several decades and sadly most of the enormously successful CDs of her long career output are now unavailable. For those who have little access to the documentation of this very special artist, this box set is a must. It is a compilation of many of her recordings with differing accompanists, conductors, orchestras and composers. And while not all of the choices for inclusion here would be considered her greatest moments, there are enough works that sustain the warm memories of the little Dutch hausfrau who quietly and simply paid homage to composers with her clear and intelligent musicianship and radiant voice.

Ameling was known to schedule recitals of Schubert cycles and songs and in the afterglow of her performance answer the demand for curtain calls with additional Schubert melodies: she gifted her audience with the dignity of honoring a composer's works by maintaining the focus on that composer rather than milk the audience with the usual encore applause-getting favorites. And special moments such as quietly and pensively strolling through the orchestra during the Mahler 4th symphony to arrive at front stage, unapplauded, just in time for the opening line of her singing - those simple homage to composers and collaborators made her selfless manner endearing to audiences.

Despite the fact that Ameling's voice was on the small side she was always able to muster the projection to carry her message solidly in context with an orchestra. Yes, other more famous singers have recorded Ravel's quintessentially French SHEHERAZADE, but few have the perfection of diction and aura of mystery that Ameling maintained. Whether singing with piano or orchestra, or interpreting Bach, Mozart, Handel, and Vivaldi with the same degree of involvement as Brahms and Schumann and Schubert, Elly Ameling spanned a career that engendered passionate commitment from her fans. Treasures from a Treasure.

Ameling, one of the world's most beloved recitalists is captured here in a 5 CD collection offering some of her most beautiful recordings of song. While we are used to her perfection in songs of Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Schumann, Faure and Hahn, an added joy is her "pop" side, tackling - without a whiff of pretension, Porter, Kern, Gershwin, Ellington, et al.

What an absolute joy it is listening to this amazing artist sing these songs with an almost uncanny natural ease. There is no resorting to a "pop" voice and yet most of these pop standards songs sound as though they could have been written for her. Clean attacks, sometimes a bit of the pop technique of hanging on to a consonant longer than a classical artist normally would shows an appreciation and understanding of the style. Still, there is never once a compromise of her vocal beauty.

I like the way the songs have been arranged for her voice in that she sort of sings them clean, unaffected in the first half and then lets loose and kinda "swings" with it adding embellishments but never really changing her voice (Price, von Stade and other favorite singers of mine seem to have always added a breathy quality to much of their crossover material.)

Ameling doesn't resort to trying to "let her hair down" or get down and dirty, but rather the honest with which she approaches every one of these songs shows how much she enjoys singing them and her style is as refreshing as stumbling onto a cool spring on a sweltering summer's afternoon. A wonderful surprise.

More than fully earned praise for an exceptional singer........2003-07-15

As I had the privilige of hearing this outstanding Lied-singer during her long career in Holland and being the proud possessor of almost all her recordings, I cannot but fully agree with the professional and joyful review of Mr. Robert Holliston from Victoria, B.C. Canada.
Yes, it is unbelievable that of about the 150 recordings Mrs. Ameling made during her long career (for the greater part of course on the 'oldfashioned' LP's, as well as the innumerable Dutch live-recorded radio-concerts), so few CD's have been released.
Speaking of tradition: it was the page-turner of the Wigmore Hall in London who told Mrs. Ameling after her first recital in this hall, that she reminded him of Elisabeth Schumann. (And he certainly didn't mean her looks only!)
For those who are eager to hear her singing Ravel's Shéhérazade (just one example of stirring imagination combined with her Art of Singing) I can tell you that Philips released a 2-box CD of this work in 1999, combined with Debussy's La Damoiselle élue and a compilation of French mélodies, i.e. Debussy, Fauré, Duparc, Satie. One of the gems is Caplet's Le Corbeau et le Renard which even make children, who know the fables of La Fontaine, revel in the singing of the quarrelsome birds....
Her brilliant accompanyist is Rudolf Jansen. Let us cherish great artists in their art!

Richard Elliot's most anticipated record in years could be something of an enigma to his die-hard fans. There's no doubt all of them will come to the consensus that this is his most well-rounded disc in maybe a decade. But, it seems, the smooth-jazz pioneer has mellowed somewhat, as his signature aggressive growling style isn't heard until deep into the disc, on the last two tracks. One is a hot, inspired cover of Jr. Walker & the All-Stars' '60s hit, "Shotgun," which features hot guitar licks by Jeff Golub, and the other is "Sticky Wicket," a gospel-tinged funk workout produced by a member of Down to the Bone. Other tracks find the saxophonist taking a much more lyrical approach to his very big and distinct tenor sax sound, even on the other up-tempo numbers. What really makes this album work are the appearances of keyboardist-composer Jeff Lorber and the arrangements of the horn quartet that used to be known as the Seawind Horns. Both acts were playing contemporary jazz in the '70s when it was called fusion, and here they add their signatures to what many can and will argue is Elliot at his smooth-jazz best. --Mark Ruffin

Elliot smooth yet funky.......2007-04-19

Having listened to a lot of smooth jazz in the eighties and nineties I decided to pick the best to put on my I-Pod; this disc made the cut. It is I believe one of Richard Elliot's best recordings. The usually blistering , up-tempo-funkiness is toned down somewhat to reveal a different aspect of his horn. Often smooth jazz players are criticized for being bland and soulless, void of emotion but rather just going through the motions. This may be the case with some artists but I believe Elliot is a genuine player within his genre. His style on this disc reminds me of the late Grover Washington. One listen to "Q.T." and you'll see what I mean. The slow groove is infectious and the perfect type of music for cruising the beach on a beautiful day. The addition of another fusion pioneer, Jeff Lorber on keyboards adds a textured dimension to the music that filters harmoniously with the soulful, pop-oriented horn of Elliot. Mt least favorite songs(ommitted from the I-Pod)are those vocal tracks that are essentially R&B tracks. They are a little sappy, with titles like "If I Kissed You" and "Brand New Lover" you get the picture. On the other hand one of the best tracks is when he returns to his funky style, as on the classic Jr. Walker & The All-Stars pop hit "Shotgun." The addition of additional horns is a nice touch, a sort of horn chorus and the guitar work is killer on this track. Richard Elliot is featured here on this disc funky and other times mellow for a pretty nice offering of smooth jazz. If you don't like smooth jazz at all than get the funk away from this one because it is funky but mellow.

A succesful record worthy to acquire!.......2006-08-17

Nowadays Richard Elliot is one of the most versatile musicians in this genre. His arrangements are fabulous, rhythmic, well supported by a Big Leaguer team. Imagine the presence of Jeff Lorber at the keyboards, Jeff Golub, Lenny Castro at percussion, Larry Kimpel bass.

There is not a minor piece. Crush is a moving theme, Still sweet on you is one of my favorite tracks; Jonathan Butler is affective as vocalist in If I kissed you, work at night is a funky piece, while Melrose diner is a very smooth piece with interesting curtains; brand love affair is possibly the most commercial theme, sung for Sue Ann Carwell; Coco is to my taste, the best work of the album filled of vibrating dynamics and seductive swing; Sticky wicked is too, another emblematic piece

Absolutely recommendable.

Soulless, Bland, Dull, Predictable - Zero Stars........2003-03-19

I think Richard once played (still does?) with the mighty band Tower of Power. Here, and also on "Chill Factor" you will find nothing remotely like that. ToP is a powerhouse band, whose music oozes soul, power, groove and emotion. Then, I went to a Borders store opening, and I participated in a trivia game, and I won two cd's, one being this one (the other - The very best of John Coltrane. Now THAT'S something). I decided to give Mr.Elliot another chance, and I popped this one on the stereo. Ah, well. This one, and "Chill" are one and the same. Same programmed beats, same sacharinne melodies, same lack of improvisational risk-taking, if there is ANY improvisation at all. All is safe, all is controlled, all is DULL and LIFELESS here. I managed to listen to the first 2 cuts, and then went through about 30 seconds of the rest. My friends, like it or not, this is elevator music. I wonder if fans of this stuff have ever been through the EXPERIENCE of listening to a John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus, Eric Dolphy, Ornette Coleman or Bill Evans album to name but a few. These are real artists. People who take chances, who take no prisoners - they just bare their souls. If that entails having the drummer play like a tornado, trading phrases with the sax wailing in the stratosphere for 25 minutes, so be it. If that entails having a trio, where drummer, bassist, and pianist are engaged in a true improvised musical conversation that could lead anywhere, through dissonances and even getting lost in the form because you are pushing your abilities to the limit, so be it. They are not aiming to please anyone. They are actually on a mission of self-discovery - trying to see how far they can go within themselves and how much of that they can express through music. But on a cd like this, all you have is manufactured, controlled, aimed to be as "easy listening" as possible. Just some machine-made grooves and some pretty melodies on top. Real sad and dull. No passion, no fire, no emotion. I am not being harsh, I am merely offering an accurate description of the material at hand. Some might call me purist, and mean that as an insult. If "purist" means I dislike products like this one, then of course I am, and proudly so. But if you see my other reviews, you will see I am not so elitist as this writing might suggest. I listen to a whole lot of different stuff, including Heavy Metal. So much for purist, right? Bottom line: This is candy-coated bubblegum instrumental background music. Guys like these, who do have some talent, but who kneel down to corporate America in the name of sales are really pathetic. I bet Elliot does not sit around his house listening to Kenny G, Boney James and similar stuff like that. Most do not actually like what they do. They do it to please others. That is truly sad and pathetic. Artists like Eric Dolphy, Mingus, Ellington, or Miles Davis - if they could listen to this (they have all passed), they would not take this "music" seriously at all. They would laugh it off as a joke. Artists like these did really enjoy what they were doing, because they did it for themselves, and they were fans of each other. That is not the case with the vast majority of smooth-watered-down stuff like this. If you don't require sincerity, passion, adventure and artistry in your music - if you don't like to be challenged as a listener - then this is just what you need. I just love to see the negative votes. Keep 'em coming.

This is a considerably expanded version of the soundtrack album to Vincente Minnelli's Oscar-winning film. With two discs and 100 minutes of music (much of which is presented for the first time), these original session masters are highlighted by the MGM Studio Orchestra, Oscar Levant, Benny Carter, and Gene Kelly, all of whom perform such memorable Gershwin tunes as "Someone to Watch Over Me," "Love Is Here to Stay," and "S'Wonderful." Just about all of the material has a monotonously mono sound, but Levant's version of "Concerto in F" is included here for the first time in true stereo. Along with several Levant improvisational piano solos based on Gershwin's music, there are also some outtakes as well as extensive production and historical notes. --Joseph Lanza

This comprehensive edition is a must have for fans of the movie and of the Gershwins. The outtakes, contrary to the first review above, are excellent. Gene Kelly offers a wonderful vocal of "I've Got a Crush on You" and his short riff on "'S Wonderful" is almost like an acoustic version, much different than the over-the-top duet in the movie. And the Oscar Levant piano pieces are as close to George sitting down at the keys as we're going to get.

I would not suggest buying this version of this sondtrack!!! The underscores and the extra tracks that are not featured in the film are not neccesary. Rhino records puts the extras out to jack up the price of the CD (making one LP into 2 CDs).
I would buy the ORIGINAL CAST SOUNDTRACK released by MGM records. You will enjoy this version ever so much more without all the extras!!!

GERSHWIN'S TALENT.......2001-08-12

Many agree that the talented George Gershwin is a fabulous pianist, and alongside Ira, he helped to create some of the most beloved music ever. After viewing the movie that was filled with song and dance, I was pleased to discover that the soundtrack was readily available. The plot of An American in Paris mainly focuses on the lives of three friends and their dreams in addition to the romance that they encounter in the most popular European city. Gene Kelley is a struggling artist who soon falls in love, and the many songs in this cd express his emotions. Who wouldn't want to dance to Gershwin's spectacular tunes such as "Embraceable You?" These original songs included in this two cd set are well worth the price. Furthermore, "I'll Build a Stairway to Paradise" is a true favorite with unique lyrics. Don't miss out on this must have cd collection.

Nearly every popular Gershwin tune is represented here, either as an instrumental, a vocal, or a production number. I am not a big fan of the film, but the soundtrack is fabulous. There are some stereo tracks here, too. Yet another triumph in the Turner/Rhino soundtrack collection of MGM films.As a sidenote I would like to thank Rhino for their extremely co-operative staff. When I bought this CD I opened up the very extensive booklet and was disappointed to find that due to an error on the assembly line I had received an insert that had some pages repeated and others deleted. I contacted Rhino and they sent me a new booklet which arrived within a week! That's what I call excellent customer service. The really neat thing is the fact that I have both booklets. The flubbed copy is sort of a collector's item to me.
