Further proof that the 15-year-old male is the nexus of contemporary popular entertainment, this anthology of music from and "inspired by" the sequel to the earth-conquering Halo saga also showcases how capably the video game industry can trump even Hollywood's vaunted production values. The original synth-heavy underscore by Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori is filled with enough brooding, mock-Goth atmospherics, and pulsing exotica of indeterminate ethnicity to give the Hans Zimmer stable a run for their money, while a slate of (mostly) worthy rock star guest turns give it a welcome edge. Legendary axe-slinger Steve Vai's sinewy riffing punches up the reworked main theme and "Never Surrender," while alt.metal contenders Breaking Benjamin serve up the suitably dramatic inspired-by cut "Blow Me Away." But it's Incubus' four-part "Odyssey" suite that's the centerpiece, bridging 1970s prog and modern rock with its moody aura and evocative musical dramatics. --Jerry McCulley

BUY! BUY! BUY!.......2007-03-05
This CD stayed in my truck's CD player for months before getting tired of it. Enough said.
Great game - great music.......2007-01-10
My son wanted this Cd. I had never sat long enough to listen to the music when he played Halo, so I didn't have a clue what I was buying. He let me listen to some of the tracks once it arrived and I had to "borrow" it from him so I could download the cd onto my pc. Needless to say I bought volume 2 and the original Halo soundtrack cd as well. They may belong to my son, but I love these cds too!
Hug your pillows girls.......2006-08-06
THe only reason I am writing anything about this album is because it contains the Odyssey by Incubus, and its probably some of their best work and will go down as their most unnoticed. While the rest of your nerds are huggin your pillows at night thinking about your video games and the "gnarly instrumentals" on this album you sit there and bash Incubus' work. The first track by them, Follow, is not all that great however it was re-released on an additional cd with their Alive at Red Rocks DVD and it sounds sooooooo much better on that cd (with some real lyrics) But after listening to the Odyssey I was really hoping this to be a new direction for Incubus, a more proggressive/conceptual sound. Whether this is the direction they go on with their new album is yet to be heard. Its a shame that this work will go unnoticed, and the only reason it will be that way because a bunch of losers decide to try and impress people with (what they think) is a sense of music just because its of a classical nature. Yes, the rest of the music on the album is amazing, and I give big ups to its composition, but come on people, show some love to good music when its presented to your faces.
best video game soundtrack ever........2006-08-03
i understand that many people are a bit angry with breaking benjamin and hoobastank being in here. i'm not particularly happy myself with the last track, but i think contemporary music is appropriate here, albeit lyrics may not be the greatest form of expressing the mysterious feeling behind everything. i think o'donnel and salvatori have what it takes to compose a score of music, but it's not a score, it's a soundtrack. i found that if you don't like them you can just skip them. the second to last track is a great way to end the soundtrack.
classical music listeners stop complaining.......2006-05-10
The worst part of this album was songs with lyrics (breaking benjamin, techno, hoobastank)...i dont understand then why people are upset with the incubus - follow has one word the whole song (two if you count "yeah") and their instrumental songs are brilliant, floyd-esque at times. for those of you reading others criticizing this album, ignore them, ignore the three bad songs on this album, and purchase it and enjoy it.

Great to Hear All those great Voices from the Past.......2007-07-05
I just wanted to confirm what the first reviewer had to say about this CD. To hear Ethyl Merman, Mary Martin, Andrea McCardle etc. singing their trademark songs brought a lot of memories from the mid-centry musical theater back again. The last song by Glynis Johns is especially poignant.
You certainly can't beat the price!
A Good One!.......2006-11-10
This is a very good CD, mostly because it's the original artists. I've had some that were re-recorded by no name artists that were ghastly. This one is a really good one--including the sound quality. If I had one wish, I would wish it were longer!

This document of Bob Fosse's 1966 Broadway production is almost enough to make one forget the dreadful and dated 1968 film version with Shirley MacLaine (who, though brilliant, never rose above the film's concessions to the era--who'll ever forget Sammy Davis Jr.'s "psychedelic" production number on "The Rhythm of Life"?). Ironically, it was the late, great Fosse's film debut. More's the pity he simply didn't just provide a visual document of his original Broadway show; after all, it was Fosse who'd conceived the notion of a musical comedy based on Fellini's 1957 film Nights of Cabiria as a vehicle for Broadway star Gwen Verdon (Mrs. Fosse at the time) and then put writer Neil Simon together with composer Cy Coleman and lyricist Dorothy Fields. Onstage, it simply worked great. The score produced two huge hit standards--"Big Spender" and "If My Friends Could See Me Now"--and proved that fantasies about hookers (even though Charity's called a "taxi dancer" here) with hearts of gold could provide mainstream entertainment years before Julia Roberts became Pretty Woman. Sony gives the rerelease its regular Broadway Masterworks series update treatment, with previously unreleased tracks, elongated songs (featuring material cut from the original album), interviews from opening night, and even composer Coleman performing three songs from the show with an orchestra for a long-unavailable album he cut in the late '60s. --Bill Holdship
Customer Reviews:
A CLASSIC!.......2006-06-16
Fellini's NOTTE DI CABIRIA adapted into a Broadway show? Almost impossible! Yet, here it is, wonderfully conceived. The music, the lyrics and the interpreters are terrific. Through the music, you really sense it's Fosse material. This digitally remastered edition is technically perfect. If you have the movie soundtrack, get this theatre version as well because it contains songs that did not appear in the film. Destined to become a landmark in the history of the Broadway show.
THIS IS ONE CHARITY WORTH ITS WEIGHT IN GOLD.......2005-07-02
THERE IS AN OLD SAYING "THEY DON'T MAKE THEM LIKE THAT ANYMORE" AND SWEET CHARITY AS DIRECTED BY BOB FOSSE AND DANCED,SUNG AND ACTED WITH GRACE AND VULNERABILTY BY THE GREAT GWEN VERDON AND WONDERFUL ROUSING SONGS BY CY COLEMAN AND DOROTHY FIELDS AND ESPECIALLY THE ENERGETIC, SENSUAL AND WITTY CHOREOGRAPHY OF BOB FOSSE. THIS CD HELPS RECAPTURE THAT MOMENT IN TIME BUT ONLY AURALLY AS THE ELECTRIC DANCING OF VERDON TO 'IF MY FRIENDS COULD SEE ME NOW' 'THERE'S GOTTA BE SOMETHING BETTER THAN THIS' AND 'I'M A BRASS BAND' CANNOT BE REPLICATED ON CD. ANOTHER DANCE HIGHLIGHT WAS 'THE RICH MAN'S FRUG' WHICH EVEN ON THE RECENT REISSUE OF THE OBC STILL HASN'T BEEN FULLY RECORDED. FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN HEARING HOW WONDERFUL A BROADWAY RECORDING CAN BE WOULD BE WELL ADVISED TO RUSH TO THEIR NEAREST RECORD STORE AND RECAPTURE FOR AT LEAST 50 MINUTES A SHOW SCORE FROM THE DAYS WHEN MUSICALS WERE TRULY MUSICAL AND A MUSICAL COMEDY WAS TRULY A MUSICAL COMEDY.
Classic Musical w/ Gwen Verdon.......2005-06-27
"Sweet Charity", starring Gwen Verdon as the hopelessly optimistic Charity, is a classic mid-sixties musical, with a terrific score by Cy Coleman & Dorothy Fields.
Best Tracks include:
Big Spender [classic!]
If My Friends Could See Me Now [classic!]
There's Gotta Be Something Better Than This
Baby, Dream Your Dream
Sweet Charity
Where Am I Going?
I'm A Brass Band
Actually, most of the above are probably Broadway standards!
Definitive version of Broadway classic!.......2005-02-09
This is a Braodway musical that has it all, and the great songs from this classic are all beautifully preserved on this CD.
The best thing, though, is the performance of Gwen Verdon in the title role. Just through her vocals, you will be able to imagine her in her prime..hoofing, mugging and charming you as she did with so many lucky audiences over her long, illustrious career.
A great tribute to all the creative forces involved in the creation of this durable, toe-tapping, musical production!
I LOOOOVE this musical.......2005-01-10
One of my all-time favorites.
Only a few tracks seem to drag it down - "Too Many Tomorrows" with James Luisi, and "You Should See Yourself".

Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

The best thing about this CD is the score: Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields's songs have lost none of their incisiveness over the years, and even a lackluster revival such as this one doesn't entirely succeed in dulling their edge. In the title role, Christina Applegate means well and tries hard, which isn't enough to make us forget Gwen Verdon, the powerhouse original Charity. Even "There's Gotta Be Something Better Than This," a showstopping number if there ever was one, shines like a 40-watt bulb when it should be 400. As Charity's paramour Oscar, Denis O'Hare gives a wonderful, multifaceted performance, though of course Oscar doesn't get songs--except for the welcome addition of "A Good Impression." While this production is adequate but no match for the original recording, fans will be delighted by the bonus tracks. Backed by a small ensemble, Coleman sings four 1963 demos, including an intimate, delightful "I'm the Bravest Individual." The composer also pairs with Fields for a live version of "Big Spender" recorded in 1972. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
Nice Revival.......2006-07-22
Christina Applegate is a totally endearing, multi-faceted performer, but there is no way you can forget Gwen Verdon, or to a lesser degree, Shirley MacLaine in the so-so movie. However, I love revival recordings, if only because they tend to record a more complete score, and they are technically so superior to most of the older originals. On that score, this Sweet Charity doesn't disappoint.
While Applegate is fine, Dennis O'Hare shines as Oscar. The rest of the cast are okay. Nothing more, nothing less. And as Nicki, Janine LaMama can't overcome Bebe Neuwirth in the Debbie Allen revival in the 80's. Allen also suffered the same comparison as Applegate.
One note about the score, one of Coleman's best, the song Too Many Tomorrows is beautifully done here. A gorgeous ballad, I think has been under appreciatted among all the bigger, brassier numbers.
The bonus tracks at the end of the CD of Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields are mere annoying curiosity pieces, to be listened to once, then turned off.
Overall a pleasant CD, Christina Applegate still needs that one big role that can make her a bona fide broadway star, she has the talent and versatility, now she has to get the right show.

To begin, I saw this show twice before it bowed out at the Al Hirschfeld theatre. I had no intention of seeing it, but unfortunately, nothing else was available.
I didn't have the pleasure of seeing Gwen Verdon in the title role, but I don't consider myself unfortunate; Ms. Verdon, with all her dancing capability, could never carry a tune (See: Chicago, Damn Yankees, and yes, even Charity). She may have been the toast of Broadway a few decades ago, but Mrs. Bob Fosse is about as over-rated as Les Miserables.
I only recently caught the movie version with Shirley MacLaine...needless to say, not even the great Chita Rivera nor the incomperable Sammy Davis could save that version, which removed several wonderful pieces from Cy Coleman's score.
I found Christina Applegate to be completely endearing and poignant. Her character may have been a little watered down, but she was still effective. There were times where her lack of vocal capability was front and center (See: You Should See Yourself, If My Friends Could See Me Now), but it never took away from her performance. She absolutely shines in "I'm the Bravest Individual" and, on stage, had wonderful chemistry with co-star Dennis O'Hare. Each number serves as a modern tribute to it's 1966 counterpart, although each is a little more sugar-coated than the last.
Will Christina Applegate ever be regarded as Gwen Verdon? Never. Should she be shunned for her turn as Charity? Certainly not. I'd take Applegate over MacLaine any day.
a Bittersweet Charity.......2006-04-17
Why do TV stars with little or no singing ability try to do a big Broadway musicial?
I gave Christina Applegate's version of Sweety Charity a chance. I love the previous versions of Charity with actres's Gwen Verdon, Shirley MacLean, and Debbie Allen . I listened with open ears. However Applegates version seem TOO Jersey, TOO Tart and TOO green to give this Broadway soundtrack any UMF!
The Pussycats Dolls should record this arrangement of the Signature tune, "Hey Big Spender" I think it would be a great single of them, however it does not work for me in this soundtrack
The other signature tune of "If my Friends could see me Now" under the singing of Christina was so bad...I felt she could have needed the use of a few FRIENDS. Is Matt Leblanc available?
One of the highlight is the talented Ernie Sabella singing "I always Cry at weddings". I'd cry too if i was on this soundtrack.
A bonus highligh is the original demo recording of Cy Coleman's tumes. Great threater history. However this is the wrong CD it should have been on
Have some charity for yourself and miss this one

annoying and really overrated........2006-04-07
everyone goes on and on about how great the new revival of sweet charity is. well i found it AWFUL. Christina Apelgate(i know thats not how you spell it..) is EXTREMELY annoying and "poppy", and this is what gives broadway a bad name.
Truthfully, it doesnt deserve any stars. but i did find one song "The Rhythm Of Life" to be a relatuvely good song. On the original release of Sweet Charity, back in the sixties, this song is done terribly, but i did enjoy it on this CD.
so basically do not purchase this CD, but get the song, "The Rhythm Of Life" individually off of itunes or something.
Charming.......2006-02-25
Although vocally not as strong as previous Charity Hope Valentine's and of course no one can or should compare Christina Applegate to Gwen Verdon, Christina exudes charm throughout this recording. David Hare is wonderful and the supporting cast does a fine job of keeping the charm and integrity of this musical intact. I would loved to have seen it live. I completely enjoyed myself listening to this cd and will enjoy it several times more.

Great sound and great song!.......2007-05-19
I loved the song "A New Day" after hearing it on the radio. I tracked it down and ordered the CD. All the songs are terrific.
Along with the Good Vibrations are my favorites.......2007-05-15
Own it! It's all worth it!
"You are the new day" is my personal favorite song.
My dad loves it.......2007-02-13
If he likes it then I am happy. Not my cup of tea. I like the idea that there where some Beatles tunes. Dad is 57 I am 36 might be the difference in age. NOt sure. Just not my cup of tea
Great Album!.......2006-04-22
I was very amazed when I first heard this album. Their sound is like no other. They are so unique that you can't compare them to other acapella groups.
I can say that their sound is better than a mixed choir because even though the King's Singers is only composed of 6 members. Their sound volume can beat a 30 member choir due to the quality of their voice.
My favorite is "It Was Almost Like A Song" because of the countertenor's very light voice. The baritone part was also awesome as he dominated the scene when he took the melody.
Overall, great album. This has to be one of the King's Singers best albums released. All songs are great that you can't resist missing a moment on listening it.
Beautiful singing; clever arrangements.......2002-06-14
I have been a fan of The King's Singers since their debut recording thirty years ago. New Day is one of my favourite albums. It has the terrific optimistic song "New Day," but many other wonderful tracks.
"Can't Buy Me Love" is sung as if it had been written by one of the Renaissance madrigal writers when he was in a very good mood. There are other up tempo tracks like this one, including Abba's "Money, Money, Money" and "The Rhythm of Life," but the CD also includes some romantic, lush singing in songs such as "Three Times A Lady," "The Summer Knows" and "It Was Almost Like A Song."
The clever arrangement of Barry Manilow's "Could It Be Magic?" begins with an extract from a sombre Chopin Prelude in C minor.
Highly recommended.

Why doesn't Toronto's Bruce Cockburn have the same high-level critical reputation and midlevel cult following as Richard Thompson? After all, they're both dazzling, Celtic-Islamic rock guitar pickers and the writers of vivid if gloomy songs which they deliver in foggy baritones. The big difference is Cockburn's left-wing Christianity, which can be as unrelentingly earnest as Bono's. Cockburn lightens up a little bit on The Charity of Night; he adds Laurie Anderson-like, film noir monologs to four songs and allows nakedly romantic feelings to emerge in two quietly pretty love songs. The prominent presence of bassist Rob Wasserman and vibist Gary Burton give a jazzy elasticity to Cockburn's usual folk rock. Cockburn's reputation among his fellow musicians is reflected in guest appearances by Bonnie Raitt, Bob Weir, Patty Larkin, Ani DiFranco, and Jonatha Brooke--maybe the public will catch up this time around. --Geoffrey Himes
Customer Reviews:
ONE OF MY FAVORITES.......2006-12-04
I have been listening to Bruce for over 20 years and have seen him live 5 times. This is one of my favorites of his. He released several in the eighties that I hold in high regard as well. If you ever get a chance to see him live, by all means do so. He is a virtuoso and someone who respects his audience. I do not understand the celtic and Islamic comments by the editor. Bruce is well known for his Christian beliefs, although he can also be a strong critic of Christianity as it is practiced. I can only assume the editor doesn't know much about him. For the record, although he affects a number of styles, including some blues, his unique guitar style is probably most affected by his formal training in jazz in college.
A virtuoso's masterpiece.......2006-08-20
This is a tour de force. Although I love almost all of Bruce Cockburns albums, and for different reasons -- he embraces change and always seems to be exploring -- this album has a special place in my heart. The concluding song, "Strange Waters", makes the album worth buying for just that song alone. Bruce Cockburn spans the wide range of human emotions; he's truly alive. That turns some people off. He goes places some people don't want to go. But it touches me deeper than words can describe. He is truly a virtuoso.
The culmination of 25 years of incrimental growth........2005-12-20
This is the Bruce Cockburn at his very finest, which is something extraordinary! Cohesive, lyrically stunning, and passionately reverberate. His guitar playing is absolutely unparalled, and this set of deep subversive songs shine brighter with every listen. A true gem.
Starlight Beyond the Darkness.......2005-08-28
The world of Charity of Night seems one of fear and blindness, of mob hits ("Charity of Night") and prison, whether of the heart ("Pacing the Cage") or of metal ("Night Train", "Birmingham Shadows"), of police states and dissidents. But the lyrics and the music itself points to a hope beyond the darkness, although certainly one of Cockburn's intentions is, Brecht-like, to create enough angst in us to not forget that there is a world rife with....well, what shall we call it? Terror? Sin? Bad Guys? beyond our speakers. Bruce is a superb musician and his voice is haunting. A jewel among the Cockburn collection.
had to stop the car.......2005-04-13
A few years back I was driving and had to pull over and stop the car to listen to "Charity of Night" which was playing on an alternative radio station. I wrote down the info, bought it and then just last year lent it to a friend to listen to and never got it back. Now I have to buy it again! It's money well spent and I won't be lending this one out!

redux.......2007-07-06
Four of the songs on this CD (Oklahoma, Music of the Night, Cabaret, and All That Jazz) were on the earlier Ultimate Broadway. Of all the shows that have been on Broadway over the past 70+ years, including the ones that are currently running, there is no excuse for repeats!
Moderate Quality.......2003-06-20
I believe that the show selection for this CD was excellent. However the song selection and song order were not. Why pick "Your Daddy's Son" from Ragtime when you can have the amazing and fantastic "Prologue" from the same show. Also I believe that a mistake was made by slecting "I Don Quixote" from Man of La Mancha instead of the much more listenable "Impossible Dream." Also the overture from Gypsy is not the proper song to start out a CD. Perhaps the "Overture" from The Phantom of the Opera.
This is however an excellent example of showtunes for inexperienced members of the theatrical world.
POOR EXCUSE FOR SOME GOOD THEATER MUSIC.......2003-05-20
The best of Broadway? Sure, if you consider the best of Broadway only those songs taken only from RCA Victor cast recordings. Expect the expected: Tracks from "Ragtime," "Chicago," "42nd Street" and "Man of La Mancha," sung by the likes of Audra
McDonald, Bebe Neuwirth, Jerry Orbach and Brian Stokes Mitchell. Including a live recording of Barbara Cook warbling "Losing My Mind" from her "Mostly Sondheim" CD isn't exactly kosher. But then again, neither is this gimmick-riddled release. Curtain up?
Half-way, maybe. Light the lights? Dim them, please.

Kids love the movement.......2007-03-22
I am a music teacher to children K-5, I wanted some new music for movement in my classes. ALL of the children I teach love the music on this CD. They especially love the "Creeper Walk". Music and movement are essential for growing children. Thanks to Charity Kahn.
This CD is the BEST!.......2003-12-05
This CD is my 2 year old daughters favorite music CD. She often asks for it, pointing at the stereo "jam mommy...jam jam". And not only does she like it, but i do too. unlike other kids CD's the music isn't cloying or annoying, but catchy, even to my "adult" ears. i highly recommend it! Great birthday and x-mas gift.
