Since America's Volume Dealer sounds a lot like alternative metal, the unfamiliar might think they're bandwagon jumpers. But COC were among the first to explore the myriad connections between metal and punk/hardcore when they opened for thrash acts in the heyday of the '80s metal underground. But since likeminded (albeit more commercial) bands like Soundgarden and Faith No More have come and gone, perhaps COC's day has finally come. In fact, America's Volume Dealer is an incredibly high-quality piece of work that exhibits range, musicianship, and confidence. If they occasionally sound a bit like Alice in Chains, remember this: Corrosion of Conformity helped create that sound. --Genevieve Williams

3 out of 5 stars What Happened?.......2007-06-10

I think that something happened to COC between Wiseblood (1996) and America's Volume Dealer (2000). I'm not sure what, though. This album isn't terrible. It's still got some good riffs, some good vocals, and generally some good music. Perhaps this just reflects my biased expectations, but to me this album seems too slow, too soft, and too disjointed. There's nothing wrong with being slow and soft, or even disjointed at times. Many people would use those three words for the instrumental interlude bits on "Deliverance," but I actually liked those. On this album, though, there's just way too much of those qualities. There's a big difference between a cool instrumental bit for a minute, and a Load-like 45 minute rock album. I think the album before this (Wiseblood) and after (In the Arms of God) were both better than this one.

4 out of 5 stars COC Rocks!.......2007-05-04

I have always loved this bands sound. It's sounthern rock with a big pile of Sabbath tossed in for good measure. The sound, the texture, the lyrics, the overall energy of their cd's is simply amazing.

While this release may not be everyones favorite, it's still COC full on and thiers nothing wrong with that.

Pepper gets it and so the fans who follow the man and his work!!

5 out of 5 stars COC.....America's Volume Dealer...2000...(Sanctuary).......2007-01-26

I remember when this came out in recent Corrosion of Conformity history. I first saw this at Manifest Discs and Tapes in West Ashley, S.C. Which is a huge awesome record store that carries every album by a band and not just the most recent or popular. Anyway that day in October 2000 I happened to look at new releases and was happy to see COC had a new album out. It happened to be four years since Wiseblood had come out in '96 and I had not heard anything about COC in that time period ('96-'00). I also saw that they were no longer on Columbia/Sony and now on Sanctuary Records. Anyway so I bought this album and at first listen was a little surprised about the direction that they had took. America's Volume Dealer is more polished, less aggressive, slower songs, and sort of a sound of maturity....even though that is odd to say since they have been around since '83! Well I must say that I personally like the direction the band went on here. I gave it five stars, because of course its COC and the album itself. Though my favorite album is Blind (have the original copy of Blind's '91 on Relativity & love it!). Deliverance,Wiseblood, and In The Arms Of God are awesome too. Anyway America's Volume Dealer was the last album to feature drummer Reed Mullin. All songs are really good on here. My favorites are Over Me,Congratulations Song,Diablo Blvd.,Who's Got The Fire, and Zippo. The rest are great as well. Pick it up and add this to your Corrosion of Conformity collection.

5 out of 5 stars Another strong rock slab from COC.......2007-01-26

This record is another example of the straight-up and solid riffs, gruff vocals, and heavy groove of COC. A must-buy for anyone who is a fan of Pepper and the gang.

5 out of 5 stars I must be missing something special . . ........2006-02-19

I've had this album for some time and I really like it. But as I look at the reviews I find that this is one of their lower rated albums. Well, if the rest of their stuff is like this, then C.O.C. must be one of the best rock bands out there.

The vocals are great. There are great guitar riffs and harmonization. This is just a good rock album. Check this one out.

I'll check out some of the other C.O.C. and report to you here.

5 out of 5 stars Kings of southern fried metal!!!.......2001-08-29

This is with out a doubt COC finest outing to date. 'America's Volume Dealer' is solid gold front to back. All COC's previous CD's have gems on them but the consistency of this CD's is amazing. Full of real songs approached with both strength and subtly in equal measure. I should also point out that the production and mixing are also both daring and visionary. One day all records will sound like this!!! Easily my favorite record of 2001.

5 out of 5 stars Again?.......2001-06-08

If you've never heard this band, but you've heard of them, you probably imagine them to sound a lot different than they actually do. The name sounds like it would be that of a hardcore type band, but it's really more of a combination of Lynyrd Skynyrd and Alice in Chains. And, may I say it really rocks. "Congratulations Song" is probably the best, but it's hard to say. "Stare Too Long" may be a little too country for some, but I kinda like it. It reminds me of Lynyrd Skynyrd, and they rule. Oh, and I don't actually have the import, but the regular one dosen't appear to be here. Anyway, if you are looking to try something new, check this one out. Also get their first two, "Blind" and "Deliverance". Most COC fans seem to prefer those two to this one, and I think they're right, but this isn't a bad place to start.
