So good.......2005-10-18
there isn't much to say about this album, other than the fact that it is just awesome. I love every track on it - the combination of their riffs and melodies makes for such great music. it was recorded a little loud though so make sure you spot the volume a bit before listening, but man...it's good. you don't need the other albums, IMO - this is quintessential Pushmonkey.
Start With This One.......2005-09-25
If you are new to Pushmonkey start with this CD. This band put out an independent album in 1994 and then toured like madmen for 3 years. Most of these songs were played during those years and are by far their best stuff. I was lucky enough to see lots of those shows but you can still buy this album and hear them for yourself. Every song is good and you will be a Pushmonkey fan if you just give this disc a spin. Unfortunately they didn't hit it big with their major label debut and I can't really tell you why because there are some great songs on here.
P.S. "Maybe" is a remake of an earlier song "Sweet Carribean Bungalow". I think "Mabye" is better but check out their album Maize for the original.
Awesome Rock cd.......2005-03-20
I saw this band by chance when they toured in 98 and it was a good show. The lead singer play a trumpet occasionally and it sounds really awesome. Good melodies throughout, and it gets pretty heavy at times even though these guys are pretty mellowed out. Overall good cd and good band.
You won't be disappointed........2004-05-08
I recently "stumbled" upon these boys playing live in downtown Austin one weekend, and although I had no idea who they were, I just couldn't walk away. The live sound was really upstaging the venue (an outdoor music/craft fesival). The songs and the band were solid. The drummer, sans drum-throne, intrigued me. I was suprised to find that I had passed up thousands of copies of this CD in bargain bins all across North Texas with never so much as a second glance. But I bought it and have not let it leave the regular rotation in my player in a while. This one is definitely one to pick up and give a listen. See them live in Texas if you can. Solid writing and arrangements. No real shlock here!..
...And I don't even like punk!.......2003-04-16
Only once before have I been so lucky to chance upon a CD and *love* (emphasis there) so many tracks on it. The other CD, Prodigy's "Fat of the Land", was like sweet, sweet, techno nectar for me.
Now, as for these fellas, I am not a very big fan of the punk/alt genre. It seems all too cliche to me, so it came as some surprise when I bought this CD back in '98 based on their radio single, and didn't think I had wasted my money. It's too bad they lost their unique edge in the latest album.
Pushmonkey are *the* masters of harmony. I'll just say that now and save some trouble. Songs like "Handslide" with upwards of 3 harmonic stanzas criss-crossing each other at once, then dropping into a clear call of lyrics, only to bust out with the guitar once more, can only back up what I'm saying. Then, of course, we have my personal favorites like "Now", "No Dumb Wrong", "Caught My Mind", "Spider", and "Cut the Cord"-- all excellent tracks in their own right. What I love(d) about this album is the production value and the attention to detail. So much going on at once, and they pull it off perfectly, making the whole album worthwhile.
Really, the only track I have a problem with is "Ashtray Red", which tends to get repetitive compared to the other tracks. I see no reason not to buy this album unless you have something against...hmmm...how shall I put it..."odd" lyrics. No Dumb Wrong, with its chorus of "No...dumb...wrong...(stick out your tongue, stick out your tongue, that's right!)" is one example. I used to listen to this CD less because of the lyrics, but I finally came around to seeing that if I'm going to judge my music by the lyrics, I'm not going to be listening to a whole helluva lot. Anyways, Bush seems to be making a killing with theirs. =p
-=Bottom Line:=- Good beat, excellent singing, excellent sound. This is music for music lovers.

Good stuff.......2006-11-20
So I found the album "Pushmonkey" a few years back and it grew on me, they do excellent harmonies and are catchy as hell. I ordered "Maize" this week and it's even better. It has a much more raw and complex sound to it, with a very 90's/Grungy vibe. It brought to mind Faith No More, especially in the song "Dribble". It's a much better album than their self titled, although that's good too. The three songs I've heard from "Year of the Monkey" didn't really do it for me, but this is an awesome album that you can't go wrong with.
The Birth Of The Monkey.......2005-09-25
This is my favorite Pushmonkey album mainly because I was introduced to these songs by seeing them live many times. This album is more metal than their later stuff but you can still hear the Rage Against the Machine influenced rapping and of course their great harmony vocals. Highlights include "Sweet Carribean Bungalow", "Monsters", "Mother" and "Blue" (my favorite PM song).
Also included is a great song "Rednose" that never made it to any album. I don't know why it wasn't included on "El Bitche" because it would have been the best song on that album.

An Improvement.......2005-09-24
I'm an old fan of this band. I went to their shows regularly from 1995-1999 and I'm a big fan of the "Maize" era songs. That being said I decided to give them a second chance after hearing "Rescue Me". I think this is an improvement over "El Bitche" but its still dissapointing at times. Pushmonkey used to be a rap-metal/melody band which was very unique and worked great on Maize and Pushmonkey. Then they decided to start writing ballads and Nu-Metal rappy songs which pretty much made up "El Bitche". Well the melody is back with this album and the Nu-Metal stuff is much better but the annoyingly sappy ballads "Sorry" and "Falling Out" are still present.
There are some good songs however. "Rescue Me" is great and "The Greatest", "Fake" and "Lie To Me" are good. I also think "10,000 Miles" really captures the feel of the early Maize era stuff although it sounds completely different. "Reason To Be Loved" is a joke song and "I'm Down" seems like some kind of weird tribute to Cake.
So really you have a 9 song album with 2 throw-away ballads and 7 solid tunes. I'll take it because when they get it right Pushmonkey has a very unique sound which is lacking in today's music scene.
I'm borderline ready to see them live again but I'm worried I'll just get a show full of ballads and I know its just a pipe dream to expect songs like "Blue" or "Monsters" to ever be played live again. Oh well, I have the memories...
Greatness - On par with their self-titled album.......2005-07-02
Been a Pushmonkey fan for years and can be objective when rating their releases - the last attempt sounded like a hodgepodge. But if a band could be the phoenix from the ashes, it's PUSHMONKEY... and YEAR OF THE MONKEY proves it. Tony gets back to writing fun, though sometimes poppy lyrics while the rest of the boys show off with great riffs, tight beats and strong harmony. It's a great album. Rare is the modern CD release that has more than one cut worth the plastic it's burned on - but Pushmonkey is different and their musicianship is outstanding; radio stations could easily pick up on Track 1, 2, 3, 6, or 9. Probably more, but those are my favorites. Get YEAR OF THE MONKEY and you'll be a better human being for doing so; order online or pick one up at a live show and you'll be amazed - their LIVE shows are NOT to be missed.
A Fan But Unimpressed.......2005-06-24
I have been a big fan of these guys since I first scored a copy of Maize from the college radio station that I DJ'd at. This album left me hungry for more of the old stuff- Maize, their self-titled album, or even El Bitche. This one just doesn't wrap me up like the old stuff does. Sorry guys.
NOT GETTING THE ATTENTION IT DESERVES.......2005-05-22
This new album from Pushmonkey is a great record, with standout tracks like Stuck Out, 10,000 Miles, Sorry and The Greatest. It's a shame that not many people have heard of them. I think more people need to check out this band. They are definantly going somewhere.

The end of an anomily..........2006-06-05
I hate it when life's little mysteries prove themselves to be too good to be true, and sadly this album is a shining example of that disappointment. Pushmonkey's self titled album was amazing, it was solid, cohesive, innovative, compelling, inspiring... it was a diamond in the rough, somehow this Austin band put out one of the greatest albums of the 90's and no one seemed to notice. They should have been superstars for just half of that album. Then came this follow up, it just wasn't as raw, it left you wondering what happened, and if that first album was just a fluke. It was uninspired, cliché and played out. Sure it has it's moments with "Myself" and "Mine To Waste" but that was about it ("Diamond" had been a crowd favorite since their early days but it felt like they just kind of threw it on the album), and neither one of those songs measured up to anything off their self-titled album. Now going from "Maize" to "Pushmonkey" was an epic leap, but "El Bitche" (even the title comes off immature and not to be taken seriously) was a disappointing down step to a band that had nothing but potential.
Push the destruct button on this sad monkey.......2005-07-05
UNREAL! NOT TO BE BELIEVED! IMPOSSIBLE! However, it's true; this cd is such utter CRAP that it defies explanation.
Their "Pushmonkey" cd is, without a doubt, INCREDIBLE. After very little thought, in fact, that is the ONE cd I would choose if I had to pick just one to listen to for the rest of my life. So incredibly moody, and melodic, and powerful, and rocking, and mellow; hits all the bases. "El Crappy", however, CANNOT possibly even be the same band, and yet, after looking into it, it is! Incredible.
These songs SUCK, period. "Nu-Metal Rap-Rock" NOISE!!! What the Hell is wrong with these guys? Didn't they realize that they had an INCREDIBLY unique and AWESOME sound going? Didn't they realize that the listening audience was BOUND to "catch up" to them? Too impatient? Wanted to "cash-in" on the "new wave" of crap rock, guys? Shame on you!!!
Listen, people: DON'T even THINK about buying this crap; even the people who reviewed this recently and said they liked it had to admit that "it had to grow on them", and "at first they had to agree with the bad reviews", etc; what does that tell you? Doesn't sound like an overwhelming endorsement, does it, when even its SUPPORTERS have to make "disclaimers" about it. I should NOT even THINK about listening to their new cd; I should ban them forever for putting out such COMMERCIAL HORSECRAP like this; idiots!!!
This must be the most INCREDIBLE turn for the worse in the history of music; these guys should be FLOGGED for intentionally turning away from the synergystic-genius they found and created just so they could try and "make a buck"; traitors to art and integrity! Don't support this crap; don't buy it; DON'T!!!!!!!
Old fan: it had to grow on me.......2005-02-23
I am an older fan. No recording can capture this bands' stage presence and the earlier albums rock! That aside: The first time I listened to El Biche I reacted like some of my fellow reviewers. It is definitley not like earlier ventures. Seems like the result of experimentation; its not too polished and bland though. A little ballad heavy. Although some lyrics or short riffs walk the line of cheesy or typical rock rap hybrid stuff ("thing" "master breaker"), they still work in Tony's melodic trumpet ("tag"), vulenerable lyrics ("mine to waste") and some good old fashion blunt aggression to balance it ("chemical skin" & "carbomb"). They have kept their identity. They do seem to be going in a few different directions but I think El Biche is definitley worth it. I'm proud of this central Tx band. Looking foward to the next one: Year of the Monkey.
great undiscovered band.......2004-08-18
I'd almost agree with some of the reviews that suggest getting only their self-titled CD...however, much like that one, the songs on this one have also have to be seen live to really get what's going on. El Bitche is not as consistant as the self-titled cd but it definitely has a lot to offer, especially for metalheads as well as pop lovers. Yes, it runs that entire gamut of music. They played a lot of these songs live forever before finally putting them on an album and for that I say, "FINALLY!" Can't wait for the new cd coming out soon.
I don't know what you are talking about, this is good stuff!.......2003-10-23
so everyone thinks pushmonkey took a turn for the worse with this album...on the contrary, i think this album is easily as good as their self-titled album. i'm from austin, and i have seen them several times in concert (including one more this weekend), and everytime they have put on a great show. the song "chemical skin" is such a great song to rock out on. "myself" and "mine to waste" are two of the best pushmonkey songs ever written. just about all of the other songs on the album are great as well, although there are a few mediocre songs--most albums have at least a mediocre song or two. i listen to everything--from slipknot to bread to phil collins, there is nothing i dislike. if you like pushmonkey, this album is excellent.
