the best mayhem record yet, dark, grim and evil! a must have! a neo classic for sure!

4 out of 5 stars If your into Mayhen , Get it.......2007-05-29

It's a pretty good album, I'm glad I got it, there are some real heavy moments but to much of that slow musical orchestra sounding S**t that leaves you waiting for the Kill!
Definetly not the best Mayhem but certainly a bit differant!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect release from Mayhem ,All hail Attila!!.......2007-05-19

Mayhem expand their Musical abilities with this release, the tempo goes from traditional schizophrenic BM to a more lucid pace that compliments Attilas vocal style. People are going to bitch that this album is not like De Mysteriis dom Sathanas but remember that was 14 years ago, I think the production hails back to original BM like Darkthrone, old Nachtmystiium, or early Immortal, Bands like Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir have spoiled fans with their clean production and widespread fan following with help of such stores as Hot Topic, Mayhem merely goes back to what they know, ugly, hateful music. To me this is the soundtrack to what is going on inside Attilas mind and he expresses it through his wide range of vocal styles to prove why he is BM top vocalist.

2 out of 5 stars The True Mayhem??.......2007-05-11

Mayhem needs to start thinking about how they used to sound then how they could sound. From a black metal stand point with other black mental bands to listen to People should pass this one up. Sure Mayhem is one of the bands who started this way of life but the One who started it all is gone and he was mayhem. Since De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas Mayhem has been slowly been putting themselves out. Sure they have Hellhammer on drums but who in Norway doesnt have Hellhammer on drums. I bought cause I am a fan of Mayhem and will support them for that. People looking to get into blackmetal buy De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas if you are wanting to experience the True Mayehm

5 out of 5 stars Astounding!.......2007-05-09

This I never expected. I can't remember the last time an album has captivated me like this one. My litmus test for music the first time I listen to it is that if I like it too much then it's too much like something I've heard before, but if I don't know if I like it but want to keep listening to it then it's probably going to turn out to be amazing. I couldn't listen to anything else for two weeks, and now I can say without reservation that "Ordo Ad Chao" is a monumental work.

What impresses me in particular is the overall cohesiveness of the album. The pace ebbs and flows with a beautiful rhythm. While there little if any traditional verse/chorus/coda patterning, themes return throughout the album, making each track feel like a movement from an overall composition.

Attila's vocals are some of the most expressive I've ever heard. Really exceptional. I'd compare the experience of listening to this album to that of looking at a German Expressionist painting.

When I put this CD in my PC and downloaded the album info for it, the genre that came up was "avant-garde" which I thought was odd, but after listening to it for a while it doesn't seem so inappropriate. While they're certainly quite different, this album reminds me of some of the work done by Mike Patton with John Zorn.

There has been a lot of complaining about the muddy production. While normally I prefer high production values I must say that I didn't find the production on this album to detract in any way from the experience. I think the sound of the album is perfectly suited to the material, and frankly I don't think it's nearly as muddy as many others seem to.

This isn't an easy album to digest, but given a chance it's an extremely satisfying piece of music.

5 out of 5 stars TRUE NORWEGIAN BLACK METAL!.......2007-06-21

Along with Darkthrone's A Blaze In The Northern Sky this is a masterpiece in Black Metal. Very cold and dark the way True Black Metal is suppose to be. Euronymous Raw (but memorable riffs), Hellhammer's brilliant drum work, Varg's nasty distorted bass and Attila's cold vocals make this a must have in any metal fans collection. And to all those stupid fags who gave this album less than 5 stars go kill yourselves you deaf retards.

5 out of 5 stars The past is alive..........2007-04-27

Bleak, dark, and oppressively extreme. The unified vision and the technical precision on display gives this record an undeniable edge. The drummer's full speed blasts underpin an atmosphere of relentless foreboding dread, before dropping the tempo to a crawl with some truly punishing fills. This is the backbone for a dense, deep, swirling mist of guitar noise. A mix that gives the infrequent solos an eerie, otherworldly quality to match their impressive sense of melody and timing.

The thick, layered production is reminiscent of 'Loveless' by My Bloody Valentine, but where that record is lush and dreamlike, this one is chilling and precise. The insane vocals are an acquired taste, but succeed in sounding unhinged, demonic, hollow and ghostlike, fitting the music hand to glove. The brilliantly titled 'Freezing Moon' and the hypnotic title track are the most accomplished individual showcases within this formidable creation. Enthralling and utterly alienating in equal measure.

1 out of 5 stars Sucks........2007-04-16

This album is laughable. I have no idea why people have rendered Mayhem a classic black metal band. The instrumentals were, while not horrible, nothing to rave about. And the vocals sounded like some stoned and drunken bum attempting to make fun of the whole black metal scene, giving himself a good laugh while kicking a can down an alleyway. Probably the worst vocals in the history of black metal.

Also, in regards to Vorthog's comment: I'm a fan of Dimmu Borgir and Emperor (more so Emperor than Dimmu Borgir, but thats not the point). But on the other hand I'm also a fan of Darkthrone...and Immortal, ect. Darkthrone is definitely not a key-board oriented black metal band, and neither is Immortal, and I still think they have some great LP's. The reason I dont like Mayhem isnt because they dont have key-boards, it's simply because they suck.

Do not get this album. You'll be wasting your money.

5 out of 5 stars The ULTIMATE black metal album.......2007-03-23

If you're into extreme metal you seriously need to check this album out. It's totally unique and among the darkest metal records of all time. A true classic.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for any Black Metal collection.......2007-01-25

Let's be honest here. If you are a big BM fan, then this album MUST be in your collection. There is no ifs, ands or buts about it. Considered by many to be the absolute pinnacle of Black Metal, Mayhem's long in the making first full length is a barrage of barbaric, brutal and extremely cold Black Metal. We all know the stories about this band so I won't discuss that here. That is not important when reviewing the music. This album was supposed to come out as far back as 1991 but due to Dead's suicide that never happened. You can hear some of these songs played as long ago as 1988 on the rehearsals they did at the time. Truly groundbreaking at the time, had this come out in 1991 or so this could have possibly changed the face of what we then knew as BM.

You see, during that time BM was still a thrashy music style. Bathory did it perfectly, but these guys took it to the next level. Using speed picked power chords and dischorded melodies, the songs all revolve mostly around 3 or 4 central riffs, but develop into a grand symphony of death and carnage. Euronymous was no slouch when it came to writing cold riffs and his riffs present here are very raw and hateful. Hellhammer's drumming is immense and full of chaotic blast beats and thunderous double kick. Varg Vikernes of Burzum does the bass on here and he provides some catchy parts as well, especially during Life Eternal and Pagan Fears. Vocals are handled by Hungarian madman Attila Csihar, formerly of Tormentor fame (and now the current vocalist of Mayhem again.) His vocals aren't the typical BM rasp, but are very eerie and cold and his clean chants on the title track are truly disturbing. Some people don't like his vocals at all, but I find them to fit the cold nature of the music perfectly.

This album is dedicated to Euronymous and it is a fitting tribute to the legendary founder/guitarist/scene leader. I'm sure he would have been very proud of this album and even more so proud of what Mayhem has acheived in his abscene. Overall this is a classic within the Black Metal genre and it should be in every BM fans collection no questions asked.

"All my time is dedicated to the WAR and everything involved, including band and label." - Euronymous, 1993

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2006-10-08

I suspect they recorded this album 17 years ago, because they have not lost anything !!!! This rocks better than early releases. If you liked the earlier albums, you will not be disappointed- buy it now. If you do not like their earlier albums, you must ask yourself- Why am I reading these Zebra posts? Am I a loser with nothing better to do???

5 out of 5 stars Zebra Still Rocks!!!!!!.......2006-07-18

I think Randy Jackson is one of the best guitarist's and vocalist's I have heard in a long time. This album as well as ALL of their previous releases are fantastic, true works of art.
Keep rockin' Randy!!!! Can't wait to hear the next one.

4 out of 5 stars Missing the point.............2005-08-27

People reviewing this album on its musical merits alone are missing the point. Back in the mid 80's when so called 'hair bands' ruled radio these guys got very little air or MTV play, nor were they a 'hair band'. They always came on stage in t-shirts, jeans and sneakers like their fans. That notwithstanding these guys could have taken Atlantic's $$$, churned out some records, did the tour thing, and been on "Where Are They Now" or "I Love the 80's". Instead, they opted to remain true to what they wanted to do, play music.
I've seen them live and they are real people with a real passion to play for real people! If you like the other Zebra cd's you will like this one, as well. Not only are these guys great musicians, they are great people! I hope they rock until their in their 90's! See them live if you can. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Ageless ZEBRA Rocks On With ZEBRA IV.......2005-03-02

To understand the beauty and joy after all these years until "IV" from a very happy fan growing up on LI who has followed this band from its early days, for what it's worth, check this out.....In the late 70's into the 80's, remember the better club bands to see on Long Island that included Stanton Anderson, Swift Kick, Llama, Broken Arrow, Thrills, Fanatics, The Lines, the great Good Rats, superb axeman Mark Hitt & Rat Race Choir and the blistering Twisted Sister that even came out from NYC (they really had some wild, kickin' shows at Mad Hatters in the Hamptons!!!!) Nothing in this lineup is close to being complete without having Zebra around. They along with the Good Rats and Rat Race Choir were the main unofficial "marquee" bands on the LI club circuit back then.

At a time when Led Zeppelin were still the primary gods of heavy metal rock, to have an extremely talented musician such as Randy Jackson whose vocal range and a Robert Plant/Geddy Lee -like falsetto soared perfectly with his flawless guitar and keyboard work along with a very talented duo of Felix Hanemann (bass and additional vocals) and Guy Gelso (drums)to come onto the LI club circuit (via La.) was a very welcome event. Of course, with this uniquely gifted talent, it was primarily expert covers of Zeppelin and a powerful stage show that got them noticed big time and once that happened, Zep influenced Zebra-styled originals were put into the mix. It was time for a record deal.

Zebra's debut was enormously successful. When it was released in '83, it was Atlantic Records fastest selling debut album ever. To us who know and have heard it--(over and over)--it is truely an overall classic -- "Who's Behind The Door" was being played on MTV and FM stations all the time, "Tell Me What You Want" was all over FM as well, classics "Take Your Fingers From My Hair", The La La Song", "One More Chance", "As I Said Before" were no-brainer fan favorites. It also didn't hurt that Zeppelin fans were starving for something like this since the mighty ones had broken up. Zebra sure had a dedicated, hardcore regional fan base but lacked a true national audience to propel them further as their magic really didn't catch on fast enough elsewhere on a national level. The combination of an ever changing music scene moving further into the 80's with punk and new wave started dominating the airwaves more and more along with Zebra's release of an overall uneven and ultimately unsuccessful follow-up album, "No Tellin' Lies" that virtually stifled any continued momentum (although "Bears", "Lullaby" and "Wait Until The Summer's Gone" were outstanding tracks off it). Additionally, it didn't help that critics who really didn't fully know or understand the band continued to knock Randy's vocal style and tried to dismiss him as over-glossing his Plant-like vocal gift and propel the band into nothing more than another "dime-a-dozen" 80's arena-rock Zeppelin clones that had a super stage performance and presence as well as a strong regional fan base following but nothing more sustaining artistically.

With the momentum stifled for a few years, the band came back strong with, in my opinion, one of the most underrated rock albums of the late 80's with 1986's "3V". It was clear that the band continued to mature greatly in both their song writing skills as well as their playing craft and recording prowess as they came away with a very engaging, polished effort with gems that included "Time", "Hard Livin' Without You", "Better Not Call" and "Your Mind's Open". However, with a combination of poor promotion, lack of radio exposure and the still unfavorable musical climate towards heavy metal rock at the time, "3V" got lost (soon the tide would start changing towards heavy metal again when the Guns N Roses masterpiece "Appetite For Destruction" was released in '87). Four years later, they released the fantastic "Zebra Live" that basically was a pure energetic live summary of their greatest hits in an attempt to capture an expanded audience. This again was a recording gem that virtually became unknown other than to their dedicated cult following. 1998's superb compilation "The Best Of Zebra - In Black & White" again went primarily only as far as a reminiscing fan classic.

Now comes "IV" in '03. Coming back after 13+ years since the live album release to record this CD is a feat in itself. It is another to come back with an outstanding, absolutely polished, powerful set of 11 songs that basically picks up their artistic progression from the "3V" days. Each song brings back the best of the best qualities that the band has displayed for over 25 years now. Better yet, between the obvious growing maturity the band has continued to possess to date, the catchy, energetic melodic power rock song craft they are famous for, the overall crisp musicianship and pristine digital technology sound recording of today's studio work on the CD, the long awaited "IV" is simply hailed as complete. Randy's vocals never sounded so clean with plenty of his enjoyable range. His guitar and keyboard playing are again flawless. Felix is superb on his bass and vocal contributions and Guy, who has been knocked by critics in the past for "over-drumming" is straight-forward with simplified Bonham-like thunderous and defined drum command to carry the trio home with a winner. The CD blasts off with seven superb power tracks in the Zebra style. A little twist that is a first for Zebra is mastered on track #8, "Waiting To Die", as in the mix is a very cool sax interlude throughout. The remaining three songs are slower-tempo introspective gems that ends with the smooth ballad "Why".

Though it was tough for this fan not to hear anything new for all these years up to "IV", I can simply say that this CD shines on with the superb AOR traditions this band continues to master through all these years and is most definitely worth the wait. Highly recommended !!

As far as the notion of the caveat emptor goes, it's hard to beat what's imprinted right on the Methods of Mayhem CD. "Warning: this CD is nothing but worthless plastic unless played loud as f**k...." OK then. Scenario: Tommy Lee, tattooed wife-slapping bad boy, dives headfirst into the not-so-brave or new world of white-rap road rage and comes up with a pretty smoking CD--even with the volume not cranked up to 11. Joining forces with Lil' Kim, Kid Rock, Mix Master Mike, and obnoxious poseur Fred Durst, Lee kicks out the jams with a thundering hammer-of-the-B-boy-gods glee. With tracks like "Crash" and the skittery assault of "Hypocritical," Methods of Mayhem is loud, snotty, and kinda cool. Even for those of us way too damn old and female to actually play the thing around the house. --Amy Linden

4 out of 5 stars ok CD.......2007-07-07

there about 3 songs that I really like, but had to buy the CD to get them. They have no songs on iTunes, and that sucks

5 out of 5 stars This is....unbelievable!.......2005-03-08

This entire album is just amazing! Who would have thought Tommy Lee would put together such awesome music. The sound is orginal and very well thought of. I recommend this album to anyone who appreciates good music. Buy it!

4 out of 5 stars MOM is not for your mother... just the way we like it.......2003-09-11

The opening line of "Serve The Servants" on Nirvana's In Utero read: 'teenage angst has paid off well / now I'm bored and old'. What that line did is set the foundation of vulnerability and pain which that entire album possessed. Now, although Tommy Lee is no Cobain, he knows how to make a point. Here, "Who The Hell Cares" starts with: 'this is the operator with a collect call from the LA county jail from Tommy / will you accept the charges?'. So although the two quotes have nothing in common, they work in essentially the same respects. This album is Tommy Lee's way of releasing his anger and disgust towards the press; it also covers his sexual side, his problems with drugs, and the paparazzi. But aside from the lyrical value of this disc, the music is just plain awesome. It's great driving music or equally as good for periods of anger and/or when you want something non-stop and in-your-face.

The two main highlights here are "Get Naked" and "Anger Management". On "Get Naked", it's just so funny to hear what lingo Tommy Lee uses (if I printed it here, they'd ... it out). How they ever made an edited version of it is beyond me. The guest appearances by Lil' Kim, Fred Durst, George Clinton, and Mix Master Mike also add appeal. The title for "Anger Management" pretty much speaks for itself. The line 'people ask me for answers as if I was a pope' is quite fitting. The other single, "New Skin", is decent, but sounds a lot like NIN's "Closer" and the appearance by Kid Rock was somewhat ill-timed. "Hypocritical" is a decent song, though it's hard to make out what they're saying. It doesn't quite outdo its predecessor, "Who The Hell Cares". After the opening, the guitar work hooks you and everything flows perfectly in and out of the chorus. "Crash" is another obvious track. It starts: 'here's some music to crash your car to'. If there's a better driving song out there, I'd like to know. Believe it or not, "Metamorphosis" might actually be the best song on the album. It's a bit more tame, and every time TiLo jumps in with 'times are changing...' one can't help but (want to) sing along. The only truly bad song on MOM is "Proposition Fxck You", which is a straight-up rap song. If you don't like rap, you won't like it (or vice versa). "Mr. Onsomeothershxts" is a pointless, 38-second track from Wu Tang member U-God. Finally, you have "Narcotic" and "Spun". Both of them are more of techno-rock and just act as what resulted from Tommy messing around on turntables and whatnot. "Narcotic" has a few good tidbits of Tommy's life ('forget about rehab') thrown in, whereas "Spun" is more of a basic techno tune.

Overall, this album has five unbelievably excellent songs (tracks 1, 3, 4, 7, 8). "Hypocritical" and "New Skin" are good as well, just not as good. And the remaining four tracks take a few listens for toleration. Although MOM came into the world at rock-meets-rap's musical peak, their music serves it purpose. It's fast, hard, unclothed-and-loving-it FU metal for the car, and NOT your parents. And, believe it or not, underneath Tommy Lee and TiLo's extremely volatile exterior sound, there are decent, respectable lyrics to be had. Like it says on the actual disc: '...take this shxt straight to you head - because after all, it's quiet when your dead'.

3 out of 5 stars Dope production and that's about it.......2003-03-21

Famed Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee decided to form Methods Of Mayhem as an outlet for his interest in the emerging (at the time) rap/rock craze. Although it's hard to tell who else is in the group besides him and Tilo, they do make pretty good music.

I have to admit that Tommy is a better lyricist than I originally thought, although he still isn't the best. The problem with the songs on here is that they don't really make a lot of sense. "Metamorphosis" is pointless, and "Get Naked", despite being very energetic, is a little too gimmicky (you can only milk the sex tape thing for so long). And another thing, a lot of these songs have weak choruses, especially "Who The Hell Cares", where the chorus simply goes: "Who the hell cares/Where the F you come from." They took the words right out of my mouth.

And the guest stars don't really shine either. Snoop Dogg seems distracted on "Who The Hell Cares" because he's not rapping on any kind of tempo, while "Mr. Onsomeothers**ts" is a generic interlude from U-God, of all people. And while things look promising on "New Skin", Kid Rock drops in to talk about the same stuff he always talks about -- how he's been around for ten years and that he mixes rap with rock.

The music on this album is more than good, and if this were simply an instrumental album, it would have easily gotten five stars. But Tommy and Tilo should polish their lyrics a little -- that, or polish the wordplay.

1 out of 5 stars It would be funnier if this album was meant to be a joke.......2003-03-21

Before Tommy Lee jumped on the post grunge sensitive rock bandwagon of today with "Never A Dull Moment", he released this album of his new "band" after he quit Motley Crue in 1999 when rap-metal/nu-metal was the "happenin' thang" (or something among those lines). Methods of Mayhem consists of Lee playing a variety of instruments and attempting to rap (hearing him talk like a thug in interviews ticks me off so bad, he couls talk like a normal person any other time, now he's just trying to cash in on whatever fad is in, and that really gets to me considering this is the guy who made me want to drum) along with numerous guest spots from Lil' Kim, Kid Rock, Fred Durst, and anyone else whose spotlight has since dimmed. The songs are repetitive, dull, boring, and honestly stupid and don't offer any kind of substance or showcase any of the talent that we all know Lee really possesses. All in all, Methods of Mayhem is undoubtadly one of the worst albums I have ever had the displeasure of hearing, and this just goes to show you that no matter what may be "in" at the time, you shouldn't quit your day job.

Having been born and raised in New Orleans I've been listening to Zebra sice I was a teen (now 37). The cd is great from start to finish. It has unreleased tracks and alternate versions of some their best known songs. No way to be disappointed with the track list. The only oter song I would've squeezed on here would be a cover Zep's The Ocean. A truly outstanding best of.

4 out of 5 stars excellent new orleans band..........2001-04-17

fisrt heard of these guys in high school when radio was playing " lullaby," and its my favorite zebra song..."bears" and "who's behind the door ? " are also very good...one of the lesser known 80's bands that had gold records and a cult following...

5 out of 5 stars ALL OF THIS FROM A 3-MAN BAND?.......2000-06-22

If you're a fan of 80's rock, this is a sure-fire winner to add to your collection. Zebra is a band that produces one of the most unique sounds you will ever hear- why they never made it to the top of the world of rock is a mystery to me. If you haven't heard their music, buy this CD and enjoy the ride. If you have heard of this band, then you already have their previous releases in your collection.

This group reminds me of Rush in many ways: A three-man band with a distinctive sound, songs with excellent lyrics, and musicians who are very talented. In listening to this CD, it still amazes me that this band is a trio. Equally amazing is their ability to produce the goods on stage as well, as I have seen them live many times.

Go ahead and add to your cart one of the most overlooked bands of its era.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST BAND NEVER TO MAKE THE BIGS.......2000-06-17

I'll state from the beginning that I am from Zebra's hometown and have been going to their concerts since they began playing. But I grew up a huge fan of the 80's mega band/metal sound and have also seen Van Halen, AC/DC, Def Leppard, Journey, Boston, Scorpions, Motley Crue, Judas Priest etc. in concert as well and own just about every CD from these bands.

If you are looking to hear some phenomenal music from that era and don't have Zebra in your collection, put it in your cart now. This band rocks and you will not be dissapointed. I rank them up there with my favorite band of all time, Van Halen. Yes, they're that good. One of the best bands of their era not to hit the big time. And yes, I will be going to their next local concert.

3 out of 5 stars What's Black & White and Rock'n'Roll All Over?.......2000-06-03

This is the album to get from Zebra. They were the "unknown" band with the semi-hit, Who's Behind the Door. This three man band's lead guitarist/singer, Randy Jackson, has the vocal stylings of a hard rock Frankie Valli. He has a HIGH voice. But that's okay, because it works on Zebra's music.

The songs Tell Me What You Want, Hard Livin' Without You and Wait Until the Summer's Gone really rock. There's also some more good, melodic tunes in Bears, Lullaby and Who's Behind the Door. Also fun is Riverside and Better Not Call. The other tracks are fair.

Zebra is really one of the great, but relatively "unknown" bands of the 80's and 90's. They're right up there with Steelheart, Thunder, XYZ and Shooting Star. Give them a try, there's some good stuff in this release.

I'm a Mayhem fan, I waited for this CD eagerly. I bought it. It sounds like [..]. I don't feel the need to kiss their butts so much as to give them a 4 or 5 star rating. This album sounds like it was recorded in the garbage can. If it didn't sound so crappy I would maybe give it 4 stars. The music is good. Don't buy this CD, Wait and see if they release a REMASTERED copy or something. This CD is a huge let down. Shame on you Mayhem!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Mayhem rule!!!.......2007-05-15

One of the best Black Metal bands around today, awesome music, great presentation and a total roots album. Get this now you wont be dissapointed! Mayhem get better with ever album!

4 out of 5 stars Good but..........2007-05-08

I've been a Mayhem fan for a while, a collector if you will. And I don't write reviews. However I can't see how this even got released. Honestly it sounds like somone forgot to master it.

Don't get me wrong, I love alot of filthy, dirty, raw sounding black metal; Gorgoroth, Burzum, Nattefrost, Twilight, Craft, and really don't get into the shiny shiny newer Cradle of Filth/Dimmu Borgir sound. However, this album raises questions in my mind like, why is it that when Hellhammer does a roll, the toms sound like they were recorded from a room next door to the room the drums are in? The bass on the toms alone causes distortion and I think I'm going to blow my speakers. And why is the production value completely different in the first three songs while the next three songs sound slightly better, then song 7 goes back to the poorer production while 8 sounds slightly better again? I also think that with the level of speed in the guitar work, it's very hard to tell what's going on with such a muddy sound, they really need to be cleaner.

Whether you liked or disliked Grand.. or Chimera, at least you could hear what's going on enough to decide whether or not you like or dislike it. With all they're trying to do on this album, a slightly better production, while not all perfect could go along way. Chimera was not too shiny but not to muddy.

I really enjoy the music on this cd, but I really hope somone remasters it, or MASTERS it rather, soon. This album could really shine with a little more knob tweaking, and some consistency in the quality throughout the entire cd.

However, that's just my opinion.

4 out of 5 stars Great Black Metal.......2007-05-08

I have only listend to the album once, just got it in the mail today but it took me back to the early days of mayhem with Atila on vocals. Not really any suprizes in this album, they have stayed true to their sound.

5 out of 5 stars overlooked?.......2005-05-16

This album is still a blast to listen to(and I've had it for around 5 years now). From the beginning track "loose", the album is an assualt (that is until about song 14) that doesn't stop. I know most will dismiss it immediately because of the rap/metal (it's not as bad a mixture as some would lead you to believe if it's done correctly) origins that it has, but don't be deterred, buy this album it'll definitely be worth your time and money (if you don't mind a decent helping of rap that is). Favorite tracks: dose, set it off, pigs, supa-freak love.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty Decent.........2004-04-06

I dont understand why people are saying its unoriginal .. i mean , if youre trying to express that bands like linkin park or limp bizket are around and there are bands that are ''starting'' to follow , you have to be kidding . This style has been around before those bands and when this style is finally broken in , nobody will complain cause it will become natural like other types of music .. look at ska, im sure people said the samething about it and called it unoriginal .. Back to the cd . Most overlooked band which is sad cause it has a bit more to offer than its ''cousins'' in this style of music . Check out Reveille also , they are another band whos fairly decent and overlooked .

4 out of 5 stars primer 55.......2003-02-23

primer 55 is a good band with a sweet sound. I hung out with the guys after a show in columbus and they really love having the crowd join in the shows. This cd is good because its a metal hip hop mix, the second cd i thought was better because it was more metal.

4 out of 5 stars Good CD...Possibly Better Thhan The First..........2003-02-18

As they would say, I have much "love" for this band. They are from my hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, and their first CD is just as good as their new one...which is also their last. If you didn't already know, P55 broke up, and guitarist Bobby Burns went on to a new band called Beautiful. Preston Nash will probably remain in the music industry, but singer Jason and their bassist will more than likely leave fame behind.

Anyway, let's pretend that I just started this review. "Introduction to Mayhem" is a great (if not original), cathchy rap/metal album. The songs can sound familar to each other at times, and ther's enough interludes to make your head spin, but all in all, this is a pretty good recording. Another thing that's bizarre (but doesn't effec the music) is the way the track lentghts are labeled on the back, but just about every single song is a few second longer or shorter. Makes ya thing, don't it?

1. Loose-5/5-The first track on the album is actually MUSIC instead of a FILLER! The first single (even though it wasn't too big...but screw MTV), it starts off with a hard, straight guitar riff, then J-Sin screams, and the loud ... starts. What makes this song (and so many other) standout is the weird, turntable-luke drum beats, which at first I confused with actual turntables, but their not. Anyway, this is a great, catchy song. Next...
2. Something Wicked This Way Comes-0/5-Filler #1.
3. Supa Freak Love-4/5-No, it's not a complete "wanna be black" song, but it does somehow reflect that, which is the main reason it's a 4. Not the best rhymes, but still listenable.
4. G's-2/5-I always skip this track. No, it's not a wanna-be G song, but an anti-G song, about how everyday kids are killed in gangs, etc. But I come from Louisville, where P55 does, as I said before, and to be honest, there's not really that much gang activity at all when you compare it to Detroit City or New York City or something.
5. Chaos-0/5-Filler #2.
6. Pigs-5/5-A great song, with great rhymes, and great music. Love it.
7. Stain-5/5-My second favorite. Filled with heavy riffs, hard bass, and screaming, screaming, screaming. Something a Slipknot fan will definetly enjoy, "Stain" is a great, high-energy song.
8. Revolution-0/5-Filler #3.
9. Set It Off-0/5-Starts off promising, with a cool guitar riff and an almost haunting verse, but wears away, and definetly fades when (hed) PE's M.C.U.D. comes in a raps it up too much. SKIP.
10. Hey Bubba-0/5-Filler #4.
11. Introduction to Mayhem-5/5-A great, head-bobbing comeback from the last three, worthy of the album title in every way.
12. Dose-5/5-Great. That's all that's needed to say. The longest track on the album. The only track with a hint of melodicness (is that a word?), and I love it. But I've said too much...
13. The Big F*ck You-5/5-My absolute favorite. Awesome drum beats, great guitar riffs, a cool bass line, and great rhymes, screams and raps from J-Sin. Just listen and see...
14. Violence-3/5-A boring song, because it's just a repeat of every thing already heard before.
15. Hate-4/5-A slower-paced track, but still not quite meloic. Very funky, if you will, but it seems out of place after all the other tracks.
16. Funhouse-0/5-Filler #5.
17. Tripinthehead-5/5-Cool song. Great drum/guitar duet. It's awesome.

Overall, this is a great CD. If you're looking to become a fan of P55 for any reasonably rational purpose, I suggest this:

Get "The New Release" first if you're a fan of:
Flaw, Dope's "Life", Deftones, Spineshank, or any similar bands

Get "Introduction to Mayhem" first if you're a fan of:
Dope's "F&R", old Limp Bizkit, Slipknot, Mudvayne, or any other underground rap/metal bands...

5 out of 5 stars Inroduction to Mayhem is da F**KIN bomb.......2001-10-25

This cd is on of the best cds I hav. Its frickin awesome. If u like limp bizket(the band created by God) then u will like or love this cd. The best song on the cd is Loose. The main lyrics r "WATCH THESE F**KERS DIE WHEN I GET LOOSE" It is awesome. Buy it. Or else you'll miss out on one of the best cds the world has to offer you.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting record from the dark past.......2006-09-25

OK the sound quality is very low and the production is very poor, but hey this live show was recorded not to be an album is because of dead's death that the band decided to make a tribute CD to him and of all their live recordings they made, Live in Leipzig got the best sound of all so they decided to make this show an official live album.

Don't expect good sound of the musical instruments here. But dead's voice is very clear and loud. So I recommend this CD only to people that want to know how dead's voice was and how the band played some songs of de mysteriis with him.

If you are new with this band don't listen to this CD yet, get de mysteriis or deathcrush first and then if you like them and want to know about dead's voice then try this live CD

3 out of 5 stars dead!?-what's all the fuss.......2006-05-17

to be honest with you, i'm not too impressed with dead's vocals.
now, just to be fair, the offering is all around decent for a live show recorded 16 years ago.
but my personal problem with dead is he's off point with the lyrics and perhaps that's a biased opinion since i'm used to attila sings on dom mysteriis sathanas but also, live in leipzig isn't the only live recording of mayhem i have.
personally, i think maniac is the better singer and dead, well...dead's dead.

5 out of 5 stars MayheM the way it should have been..........2006-02-24

Dead...i hate you for killing yourself...Euronymous...i hate you for not fighting back...YOU SHOULD HAVE MURDERED VARG...because of these "episodes"...we will never get to experience the true line-up of MayheM...don't get me wrong...Attila and Maniac are realy good...but c'mon...better then Dead? i think not...buy this album and experience true MayheM the way it was back in the black days...

5 out of 5 stars Raw, sloppy, blood-curdling.......2006-02-05

Just the way black metal is meant to be. The murder, suicide, arson, and rumored cannibalism, the things that almost exclusively attributed to Mayhem crawling its way through the recesses of the underground, and gaining relative infamy. But the one burning question ecapsulating Mayhem's material: Are the story and music proportional?

If you're reading this review, chances are you are aware this CD contains Mayhem's most reputed lineup: Euronymous, Varg, Hellhammer, and the aptly named "DEAD" on vocals. At this point, everyone is a bit sloppy. And the production... There is none. It sounds more like a cheap tape-recording. That isn't really as obtrusive as the naysayers would lead you to believe, but if you're an audiophile... "Abandon all hope ye who enter here."

The album initiates with a long silence, and a chattering audience. As soon as you get the idea of fast-forwarding, Dead emmits a possessed howl, and proceeds to shriek authoritively over "Deathcrush." The is recording is basically the quintessential Mayhem tracks, so no need to pull out a droning narrative about each song. Freezing Moon, Funeral Fog, some of the best black metal recordings ever.

What you need to take into consideration is your tolerance of Euoronymous' "necro," chugging guitar meanderings. This isn't technical stuff. Mayhem leans more on atmosphere, despite how many times you've heard that. The guitar sound? The solos sound like the band is battling power tools. The drums? The esteemed drum-God Hellhammer is rather mediocre on this recording, unfortunately. The bass is inaudible.

Whatever the case, this is vile, frost-bitten black metal at its finest. Per Ohlin, A.K.A. Dead, screams his vocal chords raw, reciting misanthropic and gory "poetry." Almost every black metal vocalist since his days in Morbid have been roughly mimicking his tortured screams. And knowing atonality kills simple music, Euronymous makes sure to incorporate a dark, hypnotic sense of melody into his compositions. Try not to get the sickly anthematic "Chainsaw gutsf**k" stuck in your head.
- Thus says the Pellington

3 out of 5 stars Considered a classic in death metal, but not the best live album!.......2006-01-07

Mayhem is the best metal (black metal band) ever, and forether, mayhem has released their first demo in 1986, 20 years later, a new album is coming out. If you want a great live album, buy "European Legions". Its fresher when Live in Leipzig, has better vocalist (Maniac), Faster and far better quality. If u like more rough vocals buy live in leipzig. I'm not into Dead's vocals but what a great writer. The cuurren mayhem vocalist is attila chisar who was on des musteriis dom sathanas album, also reccommend

4 out of 5 stars testament delivers.......2005-09-09

this cd gives ou the full spectrum of the band testment.i had the pleasure to meet the band while paying in lincoln nebraska 1998 & they were cool enuf to sign my cd & also gave me a picture of chuck billy the voice behind the band. the show was good & i had a great time with the band. if you want some real kick ass heavy rock n roll this cd is a must & not for the weak hearted. pounding bass lines killer guitar work, thunderous drumming & the voice of chuck billy make testament what it is in a class all by itself.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Compilation.......2005-03-22

Testament was probably the most overlooked thrash band of the 80's and 90's with none of their albums ever reaching a platinum status. Their guitarist, Alex Skolnick, was taught by guitar wizard Joe Satriani and was probably the most talented guitarist in the genre. He, along with Eric Peterson, formed one of the best guitar teams in all of thrash (if not the best). Their singer Chuck Billy was an excellent vocalist (especially compared to some of the other singers of that time), even though he never really broke new ground. They combined all of these elements and released several excellent albums before turning to death metal in the mid-90's. This album only goes up to 1997 so there isn't that much from that death metal period. Here's how the songs rate:

1+2. Sign of Chaos/Electric Crown 9/10- The first is a thirty-second guitar solo which has a neo-classical sound to it. The second part is a so-so metal song, but a good song to start off the album.
3. The New Order 7/10- Decent song off of their second album.
4. Alone in the Dark 8.5/10- The lyrics and chorus are kind of weak, but the guitar is excellent.
5. Dog Faced Gods 9/10- A death-metal song that is saved by an excellent chorus and instrumentation.
6. Demonic Refusal 5/10- I knew that this death metal song would be lame when it opened with a space shuttle countdown "10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 6, 6,..." This does have good guitar work but that is about it.
7. The Ballad 9/10- The first half is pretty much a rip-off of Metallica's "Fade to Black." Even though Testament was never known for its lyrics, these are terrible. The song isn't even about anything (I guess that's why they named it "The Ballad"). But of course, there are excellent guitar parts that make this song so good, but I dock a point because it is so much like "Fade to Black."
8. Souls of Black 9/10- The setup of the song, as well as the main riff, seems taken directly from Metallica's "For Whom The Bell Tolls." That being said, this is still a memorable song, and the riff is terrific. Minus one point for being like Metallica though.
9. Trial by Fire 10/10- At first I didn't like this song, but it grew on me. It has one of the greatest riffs I've ever heard, and has a specatacular solo.
10. Low 9/10- That chorus sticks in your head and while it is from their death-metal period, this is still a good song.
11. Practice What You Preach 10/10- Great song off of the album with the same name. Try not to yell "Preach!" every time that the chorus comes up.
12. Over the Wall 10/10- Another excellent song (noticing a pattern?), but what makes this song so great is the memorable drumming and the brilliant Skolnick solo in the middle.
13. The Legacy 10/10- An exceptional ballad from "Souls of Black." Of course, there is an excellent chorus and solo. Builds up and up, and by the end you wish it could still go on.
14. Return of Serenity 10/10- Testament's greatest contribution to metal is this outstanding ballad with a passionate, heartfelt guitar solo in the middle by Skolnick. Possibly Testament's best song.
15. Perilous Nation 6/10- Unremarkable song. Not really anything bad, but nothing good either.
16. Sails of Charon 6/10- One of two previously unreleased songs on the album. Good riff, but I would've liked to hear a solo from Skolnick.
17. Draw the Line 4/10- So-so cover of the great Aerosmith song. Chuck Billy is no Steven Tyler which is what makes this song not worth your while.

Testament somehow managed to have excellent production on every one of their albums. This is great because none of them are hurt because they sound poor. My only complaint is that for some reason, the songs were mixed very low. This would not really matter that much, but I have to turn it up louder whenever this CD is playing and turn it down again after it is done, but still this is a small complaint. This is an excellent buy because this disc is almost 70 minutes long, and filled with excellent songs. I've actually found where Alex Skolnick went after Testament. After a bief stint with Savatage, he went back to school and is now a jazz guitarist. He currently is the leader of the Alex Skolnick Trio, as well as a member of the Trans Siberian Orchestra. I actually saw him play with the TSO and it was a shame. Even though he was the lead gutarist, he sat in a corner and just played his songs. There was no jumping around, no movement, and no passion. While the rhythm guitarist and the bassist where doing their pyrotechnics, he did nothing. It's a shame because he was just nineteen when The Legacy was released. He could have been up with the ranks of Slash and Jimmy Page had he stayed on purpose, or maybe not considering the sad state of music these days. Anyway, this is an excellent buy. Testament was heavy, but is much more accessible than, say, Slayer. Pick it up just to hear Skolnick play, he's that good.

5 out of 5 stars The Best "Best of" Album EVER!.......2004-10-10

I have to say, back when I was first into heavy metal I had heard the song "Alone In The Dark" which sent me into the CD stores searching high and low for Testament CDs. And what did they have? The Legacy, The Gathering, Low, Practice What You Preach, and this compilation album - Signs of Chaos: The Best of Testament. At a price of $15 for 17 songs, I really couldn't pass it up. And I am freaking glad I didn't!

The CD starts off with "Signs of Chaos", a very cool guitar-only intro to one of my now favorite Testament songs "Electric Crown". Alex Skolnick tears up the solo on that song with some awesome melody. He has to be one of the best metal guitarists ever.

Then there's "The New Order" which is insanely fast and is a very good song. Then there's the song that got me into Testament in the first place "Alone In The Dark". Really an all around good song, probably one of their finest moments.

Next of note would be the song "Souls of Black"... The song begins with a lightning clash and a very fast arpeggio... And then bam, you get hit with an ultimate thrash riff. Heavy and forceful. The lyrics to this song are really great in my opinion too.

Then there's "Trial By Fire", "Low", and "Practice What You Preach". These guys are really good at playing their instruments and singing. Awesome songs that never get old.

Next is "Over The Wall" with the most amazing intro riff and one of the best solos of all time; followed by "The Legacy".

But my most absolute favorite Testament song ever is "Return To Serenity". From their album THE RITUAL from 1992 I believe, just before Alex left the band, they made this jewel of a song. A neat accoustic intro, with a very melodic and speedy solo... It almost sounds like a ballad, but it's probably one of the best I've ever heard. This song alone makes this album worth buying.

Finally, one more song of note, and it is the previously unreleased track "Sails of Charon". A bit of wah and harmony action in this song, and it is fairly heavy to boot.

If you do buy this album, you will not be disappointed. Testament has to be the best thrash band to ever exist. Alex Skolnick, Chuck Billy, Eric Peterson, and all the others have made this band into the best Bay Area Thrash band ever... And more. This CD is definitely a 5 stars out of 5; and worth every penny of what it costs!

5 out of 5 stars Metalli-who? Check Out Testament!.......2004-09-15

Signs of Chaos- The Best of Testament(1997). The First Compilation For Testament.

In the 80's, Thrash bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Slayerand Anthrax(The Big 4) are generally what you think of, yet other bands, like Testament, Overkill, and Metal Church, were as good, if not better than those bands. Testament amazed many with their underground and critically acclaimed albums 'The Legacy', 'The New Order', and 'Practice What You Preach'. Although they are best remembered for their 80's material, Testament's 90's albums are excellent, and they are still making music today! Needless to say, any fan of Heavy Metal or Thrash should know of Testament, and, in my opinion, they are equal to Metallica. That's actually quite surprising if you know me, since Metallica's 80's albums are some of my favorite albums. So, is Testament's compilation a winner or a bomb? Read on to find out!

PROS-

-CONTAINS SONGS FROM EVERY TESTAMENT ALBUM- Signs of Chaos contains songs from 'The Legacy', 'The New Order', 'Practice What You Preach', 'Souls of Black', 'The Gathering', 'Low', and 'Demonic'.
-ALMOST 80 MINUTES LONG!- Many compilations fail to get anywhere near the 80 minute limit, but Testament's 'Signs of Chaos' is remarkably close, getting more bank for your buck!
-CHEAP!- Although it costs $16 on Amazon, most stores have clearanced this album, so, instead of paying more money for imports, you can get 'Signs of Chaos' for a low price, and it's very easy to find.
-TWO EXTRA TRACKS!- Signs of Chaos contains two extra tracks, "Sails of Charon" and the Aerosmith cover "Draw The Line". These tracks are excellent, and fans of the band may want to pick this album up for them.
- GREAT LINER NOTES!- Signs Of Chaos gives an informative and interesting read on the development and history of Testament, and this is always a plus for me.

CONS-

"DEMONIC REFUSAL"- For the albums 'Low' and 'Demonic', Testament experimented with Death Metal, and the two Death Metal tracks here are "Dog Faced Dogs" and "Demonic Refusal". While the instruments are just too good on "Dog Faced Dogs" to not like the song, "Demonic Refusal" has nothing appealing, and the vocals make me sick. Definitely the album's low point.

Overall, Signs of Chaos is a great introduction to Testament, and a great addition to fans who've only purchased their first three albums. Testament, while not being as popular as other Thrash bands, retains the same amount of talent and emotion, and anybody who picks up this album will immediately notice this. Really, there's nothing wrong with this compilation, except for the mediocre song "Demonic Refusal", and even then, you can always skip it. If you already have all of Testament's albums, you may want to pick this up for the extra tracks, as they are very good.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO FANS OF HEAVY METAL, THRASH, TESTAMENT, AND ALICE IN CHAINS(THEY BEAR A RESEMBLANCE(ETC. "THE BALLAD"). IF YOU LIKE METALLICA AND MEGADETH, DEFINITELY MAKE A NOTE TO CHECK OUT TESTAMENT AND THIS GREAT COMPILATION!

5 out of 5 stars Truely unworldly MayheM.......2007-06-21

I recently purchased this CD after listening too "Deathcrush" the single which I downloaded via mp3. It was one of those songs on my Ipod that got a hit count rolling. I listened to it every time I pick up the damn thing.

After hearing the rest of the CD - it became obvious quickly that this is an absolute exhibtion in horror and dread. Without question this has got to be one of the most classic metal pieces I've ever heard and I have heard a TON.

Normally I am a huge and devout Death fan which naturally led me to Mayhem eventually. This CD right here blows all their other stuff away. I think its there best. Completely original and unique. I have already heard tons of references used by other later bands on this CD.

Production sucks and the vocals are mostly inaudible but the sense of dread and death are brillantly harnest. Wow.

5 out of 5 stars Black Metal Gods!.......2007-05-08

Awesome album from the Black Metal Gods Mayhem. Short but nothing short of amazing.

Hello, first off let me state that I am neither Issobel stevens nor STEVENSPW or whatever the name on this 'review' has been posted as I am in fact Gregit Gutterheid S-Lungs. Right, I have never heard this CD but I know that I will. The reason I am writing this review type thing is to voice my believe about the reviewer at the end of this list or perhapsat the one before last. Anyway my belief is this: that, that little **** (insert approately hideous expletive) second from the last or last (you'll soon figure out who, even if I have gotten the placing wrong, which I may have) knows fine well about Mayhem's bloody history but is just speaking (typing) as though he dosen't to further incense those he hates or just conciders pathetic. Well that is my 2 cents worth (equivelent to around one pence ion Scotland (where I hail you from)) so I hope you'll join me in hoping that that fellow DOSEN'T suffer a particularly agonising form of cancer and that his entire family dosen't disown him. Any hoo byee (I'm going to the doctors now).

5 out of 5 stars Dead?.......2006-05-25

I thought this album was sung by Dead aka Per Yngve Ohlin but some guy said it was Maniac but Maniac had left by now right? It's Dead singing right? this is an awesome album no matter who is singing but...i need to know.

5 out of 5 stars An ugly and distorted mess. But it works........2006-03-25

What on earth do we have here? This is some of the earliest black metal committed to tape. In 1987, there was almost nothing like this. Extreme music at that time was bands like Possessed, Death, Bathory, Sodom, and Kreator. And here we had this Norwegian metal band called Mayhem. I am sure that the ones who were fortunate enough to hear this in '87 probably thought "What the f*ck did I just listen to?" This was far beyond evil and insane, this was something from another world.

Silvester Anfang is a short drum intro. It has a sort of military sound. Kind of creepy. Then comes the song Deathcrush. Starts off with Euronymous playing an evil and distorted riff and then Maniac starts his screaming. And let me tell you that this guy is called Maniac for a reason. The way this guy shrieks is just out of this world. It's tough to believe that this guy is actually saying words, it just sounds like insane screams. Manheim drums pretty fast when the song picks up speed. The cover of Venom's Witching Hour is simply evil, it really is. Imagine the intensity of the original and multiply it by about 100 and you have Mayhem's version. Maniac's shrieks at the end are truly unsettling. Necrolust starts with a slow pace and a truly evil guitar sound. And then the song picks up and the song becomes very frantic and scary. "Neeeecrolust!!!" Ha ha, scary indeed!

Chainsaw Gutsf*ck is a killer black metal tune. That opening riff by Euronymous is very dark and when Maniac opens his mouth, it really is eerie. This guy's voice gives me chills whenever I hear it! Then towards the end, the song picks up speed for a few seconds. Just check out that drum pounding! Sounds like a machine gun. Weird Manheim is down right blood curdling, and all it is is a keyboard playing! (sounds like a keyboard, anyway) Very haunting sound it gives off, and very sad as well. But it soon gives way to psycho drumming by Manheim and the song Pure F*cking Armageddon begins. More killer riffs, as well as one of Manheim's best performances on the album. Pretty fast drumming in some parts! It all comes to an unsettling close with the words "PURE....F*CKING.....ARMAGEDDON...." being growled. Wow.

So what exactly is this album? Well it was way ahead of its time, I can tell you that! These songs are brutal and dark, and not for a casual metal fan. Imagine the evil of Bathory's debut, the relentlessness of Seven Churches, the atmosphere of In the Sign of Evil, the crushing heaviness of Pleasure to Kill and the sheer brutality of Scream Bloody Gore all thrown into some sort of frenetic mess and you have Deathcrush. Oh and the lyrics are quite disturbing I warn you (just look at the song titles!) but then again, you wouldn't expect anything else from these guys. If you are ready for some raw evil, then take a deep breath and delve into this album. But don't say I didn't warn you.....
