A blueprint for the early-'70s Laurel Canyon sound, Judee Sill's short-lived star was still shining brightly when she pulled into London for a pair of live shows in 1972 and 1973, recorded by the BBC. Sill performing entirely solo, her saintly voice is escorted only by acoustic guitar or piano on a playlist culled wholly from her 1971 self-titled debut and 1972's Heart Food. Only an eager audience's response between tracks and Sill's own timid introductions of what lies next remind you that the album is live. Apologizing for her thick accent, she tells of hearing "Lady-O" on the radio as recorded by the Turtles, her dreams of space-age raptures turning up in "Enchanted Sky Machines," and how "Down Where the Valleys Are Low" channels '50s R&B into a "religious love song." Then she utterly nails the diffident beauty so prevalent on her studio recordings, such as the meandering vocals of "Jesus Was a Crossmaker" and the nursery-rhyming "Lamb Ran Away with the Crown." Sill's nearly five-minute interview with the BBC's Bob Harris is a bonus, and a haunting peek into a future cut far too short. --Scott Holter

This amazing collection of previously unreleased live recordings from the BBC archives features beautiful versions of some of her most well known songs including ''Jesus Was A Cross Maker,'' ''Lady-O,'' ''The Kiss'' and more. Recorded in 1972 and 1973 at the peak of her talent, the tracks on this collection are from solo performances featuring Sill on vocals, piano and guitar. Absolutely stunning.

Skippable Yet Great.......2007-07-05
This is not a great starting point for a new Judee Sill listener - those people should get her two albums, Judee Sill and Heart Food. And it's not necessarily something that a person who has those two albums will find worthwhile to have - there are no songs not on those albums, many of the songs included in these various live sessions are duplicated, and there are too many great songs from the first two albums that aren't represented (The Archetypal Man, The Desperado, et al). But having said all of that, I love this CD. Even though the live versions of the songs are not much different than the studio versions, it's a pleasure to listen Judee sitting there by herself, with just a guitar and piano, playing these sublime folk songs. And in her introductions to the songs, as well as the interview with Bob Harris, she sounds endearingly nervous, totally and painfully honest, and like the songs mean the world to her. Judee Sill is like a Joni Mitchell with much more danger around her. Judee was all these things in her short life: a reform school girl, a junkie, a prostitute, an acid head, a heartbroken lover, a supremely gifted songwriter, musician, and vocalist. She was a visionary. She was the first artist to have an album put out on David Geffen's Asylum Records, she was produced by Graham Nash, her songs were covered by the Hollies and the Turtles . . . yet her recording career never really took off. Judee Sill is a wonder, somebody who was just too troubled and too tragic to last long in this life. Her songs initially strike you as pleasant little folk tunes, but as you listen more the lyrics and the arrangements start to get into your head, and eventually you realize you are listening to something both beautiful and otherworldly. Get this disc to hear Judee perform live and to hear her talk, and if you don't have the first two albums, go get them as well.
Extraordinary performances, essential for fans.......2007-06-24
This is great. If no new songs, it's still marvelous to get the purity of Judee with just guitar or piano accompaniment. And the interviews are cool too, & informative about her attitude and POV. Some songs like "The Kiss" take on even more beautiful aspects I think. Maybe not the place to start for newcomers to her or
casual fans perhaps, but marvelous to have.

Album Description
August 27, 1972 found the New Riders once again on the bill with the Grateful Dead for what turned out to be one of the more legendary events in this subculture's history. Chuck Kesey (brother of author and Merry Prankster icon Ken Kesey) put together this benefit concert, which quickly became known as the "Field Trip," for the Springfield Creamery. As fellow Prankster Ken Babbs recalls, "no one ever suspected it would become a historic event with an attendance of 20,000 on the hottest day ever
they ran out of water, the guitars warped in the heat and now everyone you talk to, hundreds of thousands, were there on that all time greatest most spectacular day."
THIS CD WAS PRODUCED FROM THE ORIGINAL 16-TRACK ANALOG MASTER TAPES RUNNING AT 15 I.P.S. WE'VE TRIED TO PRESERVE THIS DAY AS IT WAS
AN OUTDOOR EVENT ON AN EXTREMELY HOT DAY WITH AN ASSORTMENT OF MERRY PRANKSTERS ON THE LOOSE. WE THINK YOU'LL ENJOY!

Sun-Stoke Daydream.......2007-06-13
My buddy ROK attended the Grateful Dead's, third night at the Berkeley Community Theatre (8/24/72) Run. He had lot's of news to report, the Dead had played a KILLER Dark Star AND The New Riders were a Surprise at the Show and played a Set before The Dead hit the stage. Well, since I was unable to attend this big night because Tickets to these shows were very hard to come by, (Impossible, was a better word). I had missed out once again, but there was more...MORE???
ROK had a Flyer handed to him at the BCT Show, and it said: "Cum to the Creamery" a Field Trip for the Freaks in Veneta, Oregon will happen on Sunday Aug 27, Starring the Grateful Dead, The New Riders of the Purple Sage, the Merry Pranksters and Many surprises !!! It was Hand-Made, But, there it was, Sunday, two days from now, somewhere in Oregon, Man, this was HUGE !!!! I was all of 15 years old, there was no way my parents were gonna allow me to up and Go 500 miles North, to a "Gathering of the Tribes". ROK, was 17 and didn't give a %#*$ about what his parents were going to say or do to him. So, needless to say ROK, found a ride North and went on a 'Field Trip' (That Guy could write Quite a Book of all his adventures, I'm still waiting!).
This Show, that became: "THE SHOW" as soon as ROK got back home, (The following Tuesday). The stuff of Legends...The One not to be Missed.
Great Soundboard Tapes of BOTH The Grateful Deads & New Riders Sets have been traded since the Late 80's AND The Wonderful Bootleg Video called: "Sunshine Daydream" captures the whole Vibe Quite Nicely. But, this CD is the first "Official" release to see the Light of Day, and it's a "Must-Have" Purchase for any Fan of the NRPS. With 17 Cuts (3, are Stage Annoucements), this is the "Classic Line-Up" in all their Glory. John Dawson, David Nelson, Dave Tolbert, Buddy Cage & Spencer Dryden. Check out the Song selection and you will see the best stuff from the first three records: "Last Lonely Eagle", "I Don't Need No Doctor", "Lochinvar" and "Louisiana Lady". This CD has the same great sound of that tape I heard way back in the 80's (It's a Bettyboard). Do not Pass this one up, BUY IT... Or, find a Time Machine because I for one would sure like to go back to 1972 for this one.
GREAT DISK... FIVE STARS...FER REAL!!!
It just don't get better than this!.......2006-09-07
The same record label that brings us this disc has also issued other "legitimate bootlegs" of early NRPS concerts, and they've ranged from not too good (the unfortunate "Live: Worcester, MA 4/4/73"), to downright excellent. This one falls into the latter category!
Originally a benefit concert for a local small business, it was apparently intended to be a relatively small affair, also featuring the Grateful Dead (though they don't appear on this disc). But as might be expected, it ballooned into a bona fide "event" in an almost "Woodstockian" fashion (though of less biblical proportions). Many more people attended than were ever expected, and in addition, it was reportedly hot as hell. But it sounds as if a great time was had by all.
New Riders never sounded better, and the sound quality of the recording is amazingly good. The intent seems to have been to present the event as it happened, with a minimum of editing. Stage announcements and rap with the audience are included pretty much intact, and the whole thing really does remind one of the old "Woodstock" album, except more intimate and genuine and a helluva lot better recorded. You can really imagine yourself in the audience (and by all attendance reports, if you lived in the area, you probably were).
There aren't many places you can still go to find this kind of a scene and atmosphere-- nor this kind of music, for that matter-- and that's a real drag. Fans of the so-called "alternative" scene (damned if I can figure out what it's supposed to be an alternative to) could learn a lot from discs (and bands) like this one. This is what music is supposed to be about-- and used to be, before the money became more important than the music. We 'll never see this time again, but it's great that discs like this one exist to remind us of what once was. Great stuff!
Great Album .......2005-12-19
This is a great selection of songs from a great sometimes forgotten band. Its nice to hear some good ol' jam music with some great songs. They just don't make this kind of music anymore, a real shame.
SMOKIN.......2004-11-18
This album was everything that I hoped it would be and more. The band rocked and it sounded great!

Jimmy Webb is that rarity in rock music, a professional songwriter who achieved stardom in that capacity. "Archive" is an excellent 20-track overview of Webb's criminally overlooked career as a performer from 1970 to 1977, his most productive period. While he is best remembered as the composer of hits for others, this collection offers proof that he was equally adept at interpreting his own songs, often times bringing more emotion to them. Disc two consists of Webb's outstanding 1972 live perfomance at the Albert Hall, previously only available as part of the (deleted) US box set "The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress."
Customer Reviews:
Worth it for "Live at the Albert Hall" alone.......2006-06-04
This is a two-part set. "Archive" has been available on CD since the mid-90's and is a reasonably well-done collection of Webb's notable work. "Live at the Albert Hall" as an addition is an amazing concert.
Most of Webb's repertoire for this concert is standard fare. The commentary between songs is great. Webb's description of writing "Didn't We" and flunking out of music school is hilarious.
And he does do some out of the way tunes you won't encounter elsewhere. Webb does "Pocket Full of Keys" which appeared on "Sunshower", which was a 70's collaboration between himself and Thelma Houston and as part of a Boston Pops concert featuring Glen Campbell doing Webb songs.
The big surprise (or shock to some) is Webb doing a Frank Zappa song, "My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama." It's twisted and well done.

Why The Only Great Timmy Thomas Song Is Included in Mono version?..........2007-03-06
The only song this record is worth to get, TT's super 70s Hit "Why Can't We Live Together" is in Mono sound. It also includes an awful "Disco-remixed" version of the song. It is not worth the price!

Product was received in good time and condition. The basic question- Why can't we live together- continues to be food for thought for me and continues to sober me up.

Digitally Remastered? From A Cassette Tape Maybe............2004-01-14
This album should have stayed in the vaults, but obviously someone was out to make a buck. First the sound is in mono & way below average even by bootleg standards (fair to good mono soundboard for all you Hotwacks fans out there). Second the vocals of Jackie Lynton (now there's a household name) are turned way up in the mix (several notches above the music) and are almost unlistenable. To say they s#ck would be a compliment. Lastly, there is only one reason to listen to any post-Dave Peverett line-up of Savoy Brown and that's Kim Simmmond's guitar playing.
Unfortunately Simmond's guitar is so low and distant in the mix you need a CSI, FBI or CIA trained audio tech to locate it.
All joking aside, even the most diehard Savoy Brown fan will have a tough time listening to this album from start to finish. And repeated listenings...I have no clue how many masochistic Savoy Brown fans are out there.
Great Music, Poor sound.......2001-05-19
The music on this CD is great, the jamming is there, the energy and fun that Savoy Brown had is evident, and its the only live recording I know of of Hellbound Train. Is it worth having, yes, for dedicated SB fans but the sound quality is sure to dissappoint. The bass is muddied and too out front, the drums just have no snap, and worse of all, Kim Simmons guitar sounds like somebody forgot to turn up his amp. You really have to perk your ears to hear him at all on many cuts. Overall, it sounds like somebody recorded this concert from outside the building on a portable cassette player, in a barrel. I did enjoy a listen to this based on the music and historical content but I just won't be able to repeat this cd to many times because of the sound quality.

MAKIN' ROOM FOR MARTHA! .......2006-02-20
One of the real problems with Motown records, was the fact that they were stupid (to put it simply). I mean the record company made money off of its recording artists. So to neglect the artists and risk their departure from the label really is just stupid. But in regards to the compilation, the label did not do half bad. I was so happy when I saw this 2 disc set, because it meant I could finally hear more than just "(Love Is Like A) Heatwave", "Dancing In The Street" and "Jimmy Mack". Though those songs are spectacular, even to this day, those are really the only songs by this phenomenal group that are ever promoted or used. Many people will never know the gems such as "Quicksand", "Darling, I Hum Our Song", "Third Finger, Left Hand", and "Bless You". This box set really is worth the money. And besides the great music, there is a little booklet that explains in detail about the group's successes and downfalls. To sum all of this up, even though you would have to purchase this used, it is worth the long delivery wait.
SUPERIOR VANDELLA SOUND.......2004-05-25
The hits, the misses and the unrelesed jewels are all great on this set, however what really makes this release spectactacular is the the sound. This boxed set was mastered with love, baby and the sound is simply amazing. It supasses all the other boxed sets from this series. a must have!
ALL the M&V you need...FOR DAYS!.......2003-09-27
I can't possibly leave this one sitting here in Amazon-com a single day longer devoid of even the least praise. That's almost as much a shame as the fact that Motown hasn't kept this superb set in print. I see also that the track listings aren't posted as I write this, so let me address that first.
The set contains 43 selections on two discs, gloriously restored in pristine mono, and every major 'A' side of the groups' you can think of, I assure you, is here: Heat Wave, Dancing In The Street, Quicksand, Nowhere To Run, Jimmy Mack, Honey Chile, I'm Ready For Love - if you've read this far, you know this list. Even latter day sides that were, frankly, relative commercial stiffs are here: I Should Be Proud, Sweet Darling', Taking My Love And Leaving Me. What's new here is the instances where very rare 'B' sides that never (or almost never) made it to LP or CD are included. Remember 'Darling I Hum Our Song,' 'Never Leave Your Baby's Side,' 'A Tear For The Girl' and the unforgettable 'Third Finger, Left Hand'? They're here. The only items I found missing - and it's hardly a major complaint - were a couple of 'B's' like 'Old Love Let's Try It Again' and 'Dancing Slow.' But, without question, this is (was) the most satisfying collection of Martha & the Vandellas Motown EVER offered their fans. I bought it on August 1, 1994 and, for now, you have to settle for it used if you want it. I sure WOULD.
By a few weeks Steve Wonder beat Martha & the Vandellas to the Pop Top 10 first in the summer of 1963, the year I was nine. But between his "Fingertips" and their "Heat Wave" the beginning of my lifelong love of Motown was born. And I think I'm as 'brand loyal' a consumer as they come. Martha & Stevie had me well primed for when the Supremes, Four Tops & Temptations broke through big-time the following year. But I didn't leave anyone behind. It had no impact on me, for instance, to learn later that Vandellas' sides "Live Wire" & "In My Lonely Room" were poorer chart entries than "Heat Wave" and "Quicksand," which preceded them. All I needed to know is that they were Martha & the Vandellas records. For the rest of my life, I never left one of their 45s sitting in any record store if it was one I didn't have. That ought to give you a clue to my happiness when I learned about THIS lavish reissue of their work.
The 'cherry on top' here is the nicely detailed 20 page booklet included with a fine essay of the group's start to finish history by Fred Bronson of Billboard, great photos of the group, record labels and various Motown promotional posters. So what, if the shrink-wrap is off already and some somebody listened to the discs once or twice? If you loved Martha & her Vandellas, THIS is the indispensable set your collection needs.

Customer Reviews:
Part of the college trilogy.......2001-05-20
This is one of three glorious Stan Kenton albums recorded live on college campuses in the early 1970s: Redlands, Brigham Young, and Butler. Recorded in 1972, with roughly the band that made the first two, this is on the same level as its much celebrated predecessors. The concert features compositions by Hank Levy and Ken Hanna, among others, and contains a thrilling version of the band's theme song, Artistry in Rhythm. Almost eighty minutes of gorgeous and exciting Kenton. Don't miss it.
