4 out of 5 stars 'Covered In Black'-Various Artists(Cleopatra)AC/DC Tribute.......2005-01-21

I've always thought this release was maybe one of THE best tribute CD's I've ever heard.I've seen the AC/DC touring tribute band known as Hells Bells and THAT made me realize that Angus and the gang isn't the most difficult band on the globe to copy.No matter. If you're a true AC/DC fan,you should at least get something out of 'Covered In Black'.Out of the fourteen tracks,I liked Genitorture's "Squealer",Die Krupp's "Shot Down In Flames",Sister Machine Gun's "TNT" and GOdflesh's "For Those About To Rock" the best.

4 out of 5 stars AC/DC TRIBUTE.......2000-01-06

I FEEL THIS TRIBUTE IS WORTHY OF AC/DC. WHAT I MEAN BY THAT IS THIS IS THE BEST TRIBUTE EVER. IF YOU ARE A TRUE AC/DC FAN U OWN ALL THE ALBUMS AND YOU HAVE POSTERS ON YOUR WALLS. LIKE ME. I HAVE BEEN AN AC/DC FAN SINCE 5 YEARS OLD THATS MAKE ME TRUE. I RECOMMEND U LISTEN TO THIS AND BUY IT IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY.

5 out of 5 stars Guess I'm the only one, but I loved it........1999-12-19

This is the first Cleopatra tribute album I ever heard, and it sent me on a long, strange road into industrial music that I have yet to return from. Some of the greats on this: Highway to Hell, now an EHC standard. Hell's Bells, as only Razed in Black could pull it off. And TNT--dare I say it? I actually prefer the Sister Machine Gun version to the original (please don't hurt me, sir. I'm sorry I disagreed with you.) 16 Volt's Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap also feels quite creative, doing a good job of reinventing the song... Most of the other tracks on this album also sound quite pleasing, and although I admit I haven't listened to it in a while, I must say I can't recall a single track on the album that I didn't like.

1 out of 5 stars Biggest waste of money ever!.......1999-12-01

Warning: do not even consider buying this piece of garbage. One song on this entire CD is done okay (squealer). The rest are absolutely horrible. Not only that but the song selection was bad right off the bat. The furor? Badlands? Gimme a break. The remake of Back in Black is quite possibly the worst thing I've ever heard. Was this CD a joke? The bands who particpated in this should be boiled alive. HORRIBLE!

4 out of 5 stars Not for everyone.......1999-06-26

Although I am a relative purist, I thought these covers were different and abstract enough to merit some applause. Aside from a couple annoying numbers (the grating Back In Black), or for instance Whole Lotta Rosie which tried to hard to sound like the original and since no one can come close AC/DC's original, it is a miserable failure. Some really interesting choices though, like The Furor makes for a great industrial number, as does Squealer. I was most pleasently surprised.

1 out of 5 stars errrr........2005-02-22

Fu*k this discrace to NIN fu*k it right up it's stupid ass.

BTW I like half th bands on here.....or used to.

3 out of 5 stars Covered in Nails in the dark.......2004-12-09

I read some of these comments and I'm reminded of a quote from the movie "The Thin Red Line" which goes; "One man sees a dying bird, and he sees nothing but the death and destruction of it all. Another man sees that same bird and he sees the light... feels the glory" [paraphrased].

What I mean by that is you can pick up this CD and hate it. Another person picks it up and loves it. What makes people feel different things is the state of mind you're in at the time you're exposed to the music.

That being said, I bought this CD after listening alot of NIN down in dark places. One thing for sure is that this is not NIN. It's a tribute. It's not going to be AS GOOD as the original. But one or two of these songs really gave me shivers in a good way. Nonetheless, if you want to hear NIN, then buy NIN, not a cover tribute CD.

But -- if you like this kind of industrial music, and it hits you the right way, you might see the glory in it too.

I give it three stars.

4 out of 5 stars It's not all bad.......2002-07-21

Truly this cd is not all that bad. I mean yeah head like a hole was horribly redone and down in it was not the best it could be but really the rest of the tracks aren't all that bad. I really liked the version of reptile and the perfect drug. I haven't been a fan of nin for all that long but I have acquired my fair share of their albums and really like the style Trent has. Oh and yeah I'm from Wisconsin but what are you going to do about some kid from the midwest "stealing" "your" band?

2 out of 5 stars Never Tamper With Perfection.......2002-02-14

I am probably not the most qualified person to write a review for this record because of my undying devotion to Nine Inch Nails. Desperate for any new music from NIN, I bought this. Whoops.

You see, I have an emotional connection to every song ever recorded by NIN, so in my eyes (or ears, rather), no one has a right to cover a NIN song. No one else could paint Botticelli's "Birth of Venus", and no one else could write Potok's "My Name Is Asher Lev".

That said...

There are a few honestly decent covers here, meaning the band obviously tried to recreate some of the magic of the original. These include the covers of "Closer", "The Perfect Drug", "Terrible Lie", and "Something I Can Never Have" (which is perhaps the best cover on the disc--it's a shame to listen to it though, since the original is so beautifully superior).

But there are many more total disappointments, namely Pig's cover of "Head Like a Hole". It's a slowed down whips-n-chains S&M jazz abomination. Instead of at least trying to recreate the original punch and abrasion, they've replaced the synth beats with hi-hats and whips, the main riff with an upright jazz bass, and the vocals with whispers. Very disappointing, since Pig is a highly influential industrial group. They've only insulted the song and embarrassed themselves.

Furthermore, covers of "Mr. Self-Destruct" and "Reptile" are just plain bad; clearly no effort went into the recordings. "Down In It" has a few nifty effects, but overall, it is unimpressive.

Contrary to other reviews, I'd have to say a true die-hard fan would only be insulted by this record and would highten the longing for the next NIN release.

4 out of 5 stars A stirring tribute; an excellent showcase of new(er) talent.......2001-08-23

I have been a NIN fan for over a decade, and have bought every album. I almost didn't pick this one up, after being somewhat disappointed by the Radiant Decay album, but I am -very- glad I did get it. Covered in Nails is an amazing tribute album, all the more so because the producers have allowed many strong talents in industrial music, both old and new, to interpret the NIN songs the way they felt them. Out of the 12 tracks on the album, the only disappointing song was Mr. Self Destruct (surprising since Tina Root, who sings on the track, is a goddess). If you are a fan of industrial/gothic music in general, or of Cleopatra Records's offerings in specific, you will love this album. Particular standout tracks include a jazz version of Head Like a Hole by Pig, Sigue Sigue Sputnik's version of Piggy, and a rather chilling rendition of Perfect Drug by DKay.com/Die Krupps.

2 out of 5 stars bad!.......2005-09-04

Aside from a few ridiculous vampire-wannabe bands and some irrelevant
aspiring clones that have given black metal a bad name, Cradle of Filth
is truly responsible for starting fashion trends, fake teeth, infantile
imageries and,of course, a style of metal that you either love or hate.
I believe their first 4 albums to be their decent best work, but they
kind of lost me after that. It seemed like the more popular they got,
the more they stagnated. A tribute album was inevitable. The good thing
about this cd is bands like Mirzadeh, Noctuary, Wehrwolfe, Born of thorns,
Willow Wisp and especially Kekal, who did their respective covers and
not only sounded almost as good as the original, but they added something
slightly different to make things absorbing. The bad, well, pretty much
the rest of the compilation. Some of those vocalists were trying to hard
to sound like Danni, but failed miserably, while the other bands were
either badly covering an already mediocre song or butchering a good one.
Buy at own risk!

5 out of 5 stars Cradle gets a TRIBUTE?!.......2004-03-27

Well hooooooly shiznit! After reviewing that God forsaken terrible AFI tribute, I went in search of other tributes of groups I enjoyed, only expecting to be let down..some (NIN tributes) did. But, this one, the tribute to Cradle of Filth, definantly did NOT let me down! I didn't listen to this expecting or even hoping that the groups on here sounded remotely close to Cradle of Filth, infact I prayed that they wouldn't. It's a good thing they don't really, either. Anyways, yes this is a good tribute, a really good tribute. DDT do a top notch cover of the Cradle cover "No Time to Cry." I enjoy it alot. The Wehrwolfe cover for "Principle of Evil Made Flesh" is also quite good, if not that, one of the best covers on here. Serpents Aria doing "Born in a Burial Gown" kind of bothered the living Hell out of me for awhile, because it's just...instrumentally sped the Hell up and sounded so different. But after awhile, I got used to it. Kaul's version of "Suicide and Other Comforts" is quite good, but sounds really nothing like the original. And despite what another reviwer had said, Dark Army's rendition of "From the Cradle to Enslave" is an okay track, while I won't say it's great, it still is quite ok, not terrible or anything.
All in all, Cradle fans should get this souly to see how Cradle of Filth have inspired many bands out there, and how well they sound being inspired. This cd is 80% good, but yes, some of the songs are quite pointless. Get it only if you're a devoted Cradle fan looking to hear some decently played covers. But I urge you, do NOT be looking to hear things that sound exactly like Cradle of Filth, you won't find them on this tribute. Infact, you won't find anything sounding exactly like a band, on ANY tribute for that matter. Tributes are ment for renditions by a band, while yes they perform the song, they perform it THEIR OWN WAY, not the exact same way it was heard on the original artist's cd.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Tribute.......2003-05-01

These bands are all top-notch! It's hard to believe they are underground bands! They all added their own identity to the CRADLE tracks! DDT even did a wonderful cover of a cover, totally crushed it!!!!!! Wehrwolfe tear your head off with the opening track and set the pace for the rest of this ULTRA-HIGH CALIBER CD! Nice packaging as well! I like this better than some of the CRADLE CDs simply because of the production quality, much better sound! Enjoy It, It's Pounding Metal At It's Best!

1 out of 5 stars Your Kidding Right?.......2003-04-28

Cradle of Filth are both most loved and most hated "black metal" band on the scene, I for one think that they are merely O.K., not terrible but not great, but this tribute makes Cradle of Filth look like Samael or Burzum. Granted, they have picked 14 different underground metal bands, but they have picked some of the worst (this includes the incredibly over-rated bands Dark Army, Kaul, and Lucifer). To be blunt, this album s u c k s. With the exception of two tracks, this album is worthless! First up is Wehrwolf covering "Principle of Evil Made Flesh", which, I hate to say, was pretty good. Then to the [those] in D.D.T. who covered a COVER (Sisters of Mercy's "No Time to Cry"). How r e t a r d e d do you have to be to cover a cover song? To tell you the truth, it is not that bad of a cover, but it has no place on this Cradle of Filth tribute! Mirzader's rendition of "Malice throlught the Looking Glass" was superb. Better than the original ten fold. Dark Army's cover of "From the Cradle to Enslave" was the largest atrocity on this album. I have disliked this band since they formed, and now I hate them even more. So please, I beg of you, do not buy this album! This is probably the worst tribute I have ever heard. If you like tributes, try the 'Tribute to Carcass' or 'Gateway to Hell: A Tribute to Slayer' not this sorry excuse for a compilation. Can you say "Sorry excuse for a coaster"? Good, I knew you could.

3 out of 5 stars Willow Wisp are awesome!!.......2003-04-24

This Tribute CD to one of my favorite bands in the world Cradle Of Filth also includes a great cover of "The Forest Whispers My Name" by Incredible Hollywood,Ca.Goth Black Metal group Willow Wisp.Other noteworthy covers are performed by Kaul,Mirzadeh and Serpents Aria.Buy this for the novelty factor and the killer version of "The Forerst Whispers My Name" by Willow Wisp!!
