        Album Description

"No need to introduce KILLERS, the only French metal band who has been in activity since the 80's. With more than 10 records and a true composition richness, KILLERS enters in the third millenium without any complex towards the ""young"" French bands! After their book, ""Ennemis En Public"", which related a ten-year-old career, their first six studio albums were rereleased. Since then, KILLERS has offered us a new album every year: ""Fort Intérieur"", ""109"", ""Mauvaises Graines"" and in early 2001 ""Killing Games"", the first English version of one of their albums (all in French until now). In 2001, they will also release a new version of ""Mise Aux Poings"", interpreted by Bruno Dolheguy."

5 out of 5 stars Great prog from this short-lived Canadian band.......2006-10-31

Opus 5 was one of many prog rock bands that surfaced in Quebec in the 1970s. The province tended to have their own scene independant from the rest of Canada, and if you're looking to explore that country's prog scene, look to Quebec.

Opus 5 only managed one album in their lifetime, Contre Courant in 1976 on the Célébration label (they recorded a second album around 1977 called Sérieux Au Pas, but did not surface until 1989). This was the same label that Harmonium was on for their first two albums, before that band jumped ship for CBS. Célébration was obviously feeling the need to fill in a hole left off by Harmonium so they signed Opus 5. This group featured keyboardist Olivier du Plessis, guitarist Luc Guthier, flautist Serge Nolet, bassist Christian Leon Racine, and drummer Jean-Pierre Racicot, all credited to vocal duties aside from the drummer. Although there are no ladies in the band, you could swear there are female vocals. That gets me thinking of Änglagård's Hybris (not musically, of course), in which Tord Lindman did the vocals, you think it was a female even if it wasn't. To my best description of Opus 5, if Quebec contemporary Et Cetera did not try to copy the Gentle Giant sound, they'd end up something like this group. There is some folk tendencies in their music giving a comparison to former labelmates Harmonium, but still in a more traditional progressive fashion than Harmonium. There are some jazzy passages, in the drumming. It's also pretty safe to say if you enjoy groups like Harmonium, Et Cetera, Sloche and Maneige, you should enjoy Opus 5 as well. Piano is the most dominant keyboard, but synthesizers (apparently a Minimoog or ARP 2600), Solina string synth, electric piano (Wurlitzer), Hammond B3 organ, and clavicord are keyboards used. The band also gets compared to Canterbury bands like Hatfield & the North, but the band never heard of Hatfield & the North or any other Canterbury band. The music isn't aggressive and in your face like many of those heavy Italian prog bands like Il Balletto di Bronzo, Osanna, Museo Rosenbach, etc. The music tends to be mellower, but not as mellow as the Moody Blues (or Harmonium). The vocals are in French, and tends to be rather dominant throughout the album. I notice as the album progresses, the music gets more complex and there's the occasional piece that shows a Gentle Giant influence (GG was apparently big in Quebec at that time, as a group like Et Cetera was very much like a Quebecois GG, while other groups like Maneige, Sloche, and Pollen showed the GG influence on some of the cuts).

By the way, one cut, "Les Saigneurs" features lyrics with a Quebec nationalist bent, and there's some lyrics that go: "Est-ce normal que de parler l'anglias?" (tran. "Is it normal to speak English?") and then a voice in bad English that goes: "Is it abnormal to speak French?" You can pretty much guarantee with lyrics like that, that they weren't exactly going to win over the Anglo-Canadian audience. Probably didn't matter anyway, because unless a Quebec group sung in English, they weren't likely to break out of Quebec (but then again, any group not singing in English often had trouble breaking out of their own country, look at PFM before they started recording English language albums).

I have to say Opus 5's Contre Courant is right up there with Sloche's J'un Oeil and Stadacone, and the self-entitled albums from Pollen and Et Cetera (I have yet to get albums from Maneige and Harmonium) as far as Quebecois prog rock goes, and this is another great album to start your Quebec prog collection!
