2 out of 5 stars Largely Disappointing........2007-07-27

The new "Babylon 5" soundtrack for the recently released "Lost Tales" film marks many returns in more ways than one. This CD is the first "Babylon 5" soundtrack to be released since the original TV series was cancelled and it's also Christopher Franke's first full-length CD release in nearly seven years.
With this said, the CD itself has wound up being largely disappointing. While there are some excellent moments heard here, the music is mostly the same orchestral retreadings that have been the heart of Franke's music for over a decade. In other words, there's really nothing that sounds fresh here. Also, instead of the music being arranged into lengthy suites as on the previous main "Babylon 5" discs, we are treated with 28 short cues that begin with promising results but abruptly end before anything begins to take off.
In the end, Christopher Franke's soundtrack for "Babylon 5 - The Lost Tales" will only appeal to the die hard fans of the series as well as Franke's music. This CD is probably Franke's weakest album and leaves little to be desired. 40 minutes of mostly short music cues just doesn't cut it. Sorry.

Thievery Corporation's Eric Hilton and Rob Garza have always treated the line between acoustic and electronic music as a drunken sailor might, unpredictably falling on one side or the other with equal frequency. By this measure, The Richest Man in Babylon is their soberest effort to date, striding confidently into jazz, soul, world beat, and other styles with a direct, reverential approach. The band's last record, Sounds from the Verve Hi-Fi, featured a set of classic jazz tunes unadorned with remixes or reinterpretation. But the songs on Babylon are originals, incorporating not just jazz but Afro-beat, Brazilian dance, Persian and Indian music, reggae, and psychedelia, all while making expert use of new and old collaborators like Sleepy Wonder, Lou Lou, and Shinehead. Icelandic singer Emiliana Torrini makes an instant impression on the first track, "Heaven's Gonna Burn Your Eyes," her voice freeing the song's melody and structure with just a few hypnotic bars. It's hard to call this an electronic record at all; even their dub-influenced tracks miss a certain studio sheen, as if Hilton and Garza simply waded into a sweltering Jamaican beach party and hit record. But while it misses the ambient, ethereal edge that made The Mirror Conspiracy a downtempo classic, Babylon satisfies with organic energy and tasteful eclecticism. --Matthew Cooke

Album Description

Rob Garza and Eric Hilton consider it their most introspective work to date. Existing somewhere between rock, dub, psychedelic, Latin, and electronic music, this 2002 album finds the duo elevating their signature sound with more contemplative and thought-provoking songwriter. The jewel case is housed in a slipcase along with a 40-page black & white photo booklet. Eighteenth Street Lounge. 2002.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional fusion........2007-07-10

Words cannot fully describe the vibes that emerge through the sound of this CD. I first heard it at a Microsoft conference in Virginia. Before the speaker took stage, The Richest Man in Babylon had captivated the audience. Something only a Thiethery Cororation could do. Immagine a group of highly thinkers in the world standing still; Absolutely mesmerized by a mystical fusion of JazzBigBandElectroCeltic sound. It was so ooooo relaxing; so oooo captivating that I got off my seat, walked to the sound system and asked the MC what algorithm he used to produce such a fantastic sound. He told me the sound was rendered by a DC group called Thievery Corporation. Ever since, I have been and remained a fan. Buy and listen to this CD. Also checkout the dub version of the same album.

5 out of 5 stars Good background music.......2007-04-10

I saw them perform last year, and was told by friends that if I was going to purchase one of Thievery Corporation's CDs that this should be the one. As soon as I got it in the mail, I have listened to it nearly every day while working. If you like electronic music as background music, I would suggest this CD. It has a nice steady rhythm throughout the entire CD to keep you going. I love the CD but hate having to get up and press play again...I guess that just means that I should buy another one of Thievery Corporation's CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing less than 5 stars.......2007-02-11

I don't usually write reviews, but I feel compelled to raise the average rating on this album. Look, it's silly to give any TC album less than 5 stars, when comparing to any other album out there. TC makes the most brilliant music on the planet right now. Of course you should go out and buy RMIB right now, if you don't already own it. The first and last songs on this CD are worth it alone. You will find yourself listening to Resolution over and over again, mesmerized by its beautiful, swirling, mystical, comforting, and yearning sounds. The first song is just hands down brilliant. You've never heard anything like it in your life, but somehow it seems familiar.

Now, comparing TC albums to each other is a different story. There should be a separate "intra-artist" rating system. In that sense, I
would rate Cosmic Game the highest, followed by Sounds from the Thievery Hi-Fi, and then Richest Man In Babylon.

4 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2006-09-28

This is my second album by Thievery Corporation, The Cosmic Game being the first. I think I like this album a bit more due the the more organic nature of the instrumentation here. "Facing East" is my favorite song on the album, as well as one of my favorite songs at the moment. The exotic Middle Eastern groove and instruments really make this song something very unique. The song "The Richest Man In Babylon" is a real gem in more of a soulful/jazzy/reggae kind of mood. The mix of cross cultures really brings this kind of music to life. "Resolution" has a cool dreamy atmosphere, the perfect way to end this album. I will explore more of their music soon.

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2006-08-11

I can't believe Schirmer's review is highlighted, this album is amazing!! Babylon has as many bold shifts in style, experimental, innovative melds of music, RICH instrumentation, interesting & relevant lyrics and great vocal work as a late Beatles album. Except there's lyrics not only in English, but French, Farsi and Spanish!! There's Indian, dub, Latin, jazzy, rap, instrumental, fast, slow, fun, reflective all on one album with a very cool political stance. This is SO original, seriously, who sounds like Thievery Corporation?? This is one of the best albums of 2002, if not THE best (I'd put the Chemical Brother's Come With Us up there too). I feel this is Thievery, Inc.'s best album (I have them all, too), but that's a seperate argument. This is so much infinitely better than most of the totally wretched garbage that gets played on the radio/MTV these days. Also it's independently made, which is hard to hear these days as well, with total corporate control of the mainstream media. Which the group's name is a 'hip' take on. Speaking of, sure some of the songs sound 'hip,' that's a compliment, isn't it?

The only way someone could find this album bland or boring is if that person is bland or boring, i.e. has no interest in the the world outside their local community, other cultures, or only interested in one kind of music. Or if you're a neo-con.

People from all over the world came together to make this album, how cool is that??

If only there were MORE international collaborations that ended up as beautiful as this....

Bob Marley's second live album, 1978's Babylon by Bus, had to be pretty damned good to match the incandescence of 1975's Live!. But with glorious performances on songs like "Punky Reggae Party," "Jamming," and "Is This Love?" Bob Marley and the Wailers came close to equaling Live!. Maybe there wasn't quite the same amount of inspiration, but the Wailers had matured into a tight unit, and Marley was a charismatic performer, as this set captured only too well. And with Marley still at the height of his writing powers, there definitely wasn't a dud song in the bunch. Not so much bus travel as limousine listening, this specially remastered edition makes the glory of the original release even clearer. --Chris Nickson

5 out of 5 stars Once you're done with Legend be sure to stop here........2006-06-15

This is my favorite album from Bob Marley and the Wailers and I own all of the Tuff Gong Albums. "Punky Reggae Party" gives me chills when I hear the crowd sing back to him. It's got classic tracks that many will be familiar with and quite a few that introduce new listeners to his music beyond Legend and his other greatest hit compilations. What I truly enjoy is hearing the composition of the music with the band, back-up singers and Marley's vocals blending together and captured live.

5 out of 5 stars without the best live album i've ever heard.......2006-03-17

i don't really like live albums. i think that it's really hard to capture the energy and for the most part the recording quality is pretty bad.

this is not only, without a doubt, the best live album i've ever heard. it's probablly my favorite marley album. i never thought i would like something more than catch a fire, but i was wrong. this is awesome!

there is a reason why bob marley is the biggest name in reggae and this is a huge part of that reason. buy this immediately.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Bob Marley.......2006-03-15

At least one of the earlier reviews recommends novice listeners start with this cd before going to the greatest hits package. I would say that the novice would do well to buy this package and Legend (the original single disc is recommended here because I do not own the new expanded version and cannot comment on its contents).
I still recommend this cd if you are looking to move beyond the novice level.
So, anyone with any interest in Bob Marley should own Babylon by Bus.
These songs were taken from numerous stops on his 1977/78 tour of Europe but the sequence sounds like one big show. This is not the intimate show that you get on something like Live at the Roxy - it's music festival big. The overall feeling reminds me of reggae festivals we used to have at the beach when I was growing up on the coast of NC.
The atmosphere is big but Marley and the band never seem overwhelmed as they rise to the occasion on each song. The audience is taken along on a fantastic reggae trip.
Don't let any more time pass without these great performances in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have!!.......2005-05-06

Bob & the Wailers come together for a wonderful live set, this one is pure gold. A must have for concert lovers!!

5 out of 5 stars Hidden gem.......2005-04-19

Although most Marley fans are more than familiar with Babylon by Bus as an exceptional live album that Marley recorded while on tour in Europe (mostly recorded in Paris) in 1977-78, many of the more pedestrian fans remain completely unaware of its existence. War/No More Trouble, with Marley exhibiting such unparalleled and genuine passion during its performance, makes for undoubtedly the most powerful song on this CD. And, suffice it to say, all of the other 'hit' songs do not disappoint by any stretch. A must own for any true Marley fan -- period.

Released just in time to usher in the final season of Showtime's gritty, gay-themed series, this accompanying fifth soundtrack anthology expands upon a smart pop music sensibility whose popularity parallels the show itself. The 20 beat-savvy tracks here were inspired by the nightspot that's an integral part of the series' drama, a vibrant double-disc collection that interweaves such 80's-vintage club staples as Bronski Beat's "Smalltown Boy," and The Pet Shop Boys' (with an assist from Peter Rauhofer) "Break 4 Love" with more contemporary grooves like Ultra Nate's "Free" and "Safe From Harm" by Narcotic Thrust. Fans will note that a number of the versions here differ from those actually aired on the show. But as mixed by Chris Cox (disc one) and Abel Aguilera (the edgier, more expansive disc two) and seamlessly sequenced sans track gaps, the intent is not to offer up a slavish show song-score, but rather to synthesize a fictional night at Club Babylon that stretches from the first disc's upbeat pop to the sensual, hypnotic rhythms of Suzanne Palmer and Rachel Panay that highlight the closer. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Pumpin' compilation.......2007-04-16

I have this compilation on my music player and use it to boost my spirits at the gym, and it always works. I agree that the first cd takes a bit to warm up especially since the already-mentioned back-to-the-80s song after Ultra Nate (a song I don't really like). A really great circuit music compilation that stands on its own.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome Set!.......2007-02-15

I thought the first CD was better than the second, although there were cuts on the second CD I liked very much. Having been in my prime in the 80s, I was familiar with most of the music, and took me back to Brussels, Belgium and the club scene there. Dare I say I use these CDs for work outs now LOL. From an old school clubber, I give it 4 thumbs up. Only because there were some dragging tracks on the 2nd CD, and not enough mix in my opinion. That Spin Spin Sugar is awesome!

3 out of 5 stars First disk much better than second.......2007-01-22

The mixing was really great on these CDs, but the first disk was definitely much better than the second.

4 out of 5 stars Club Babylon.......2007-01-20

Slightly dissappointed with this soundtrack. There are some good songs on this 2 disc collection, however, it wasn't as good as the season 1-5 soundtracks were.

5 out of 5 stars Behind Club Babylon.......2006-10-27

For those who haven't purchased this anthology it's a must have!!! The 2cd set captures the spirit of Babylon. A night at the club is like this and here is your own personal ticket to Babylon..

For me, it fit right in with my Ministry of Sound and Gatecrasher cd's ..

As a fan I loved it... As a House Music and Club junkie it was a wish come true!!!!
I highly recommend to everyone... The Babylon theme is very present througout the first cd and more distinct in the second... Krintine W. who is synonomous with QAF / Babylon featured almost every season (except 4) is featured twice beutifully ... Her unique talent and sheer vitue make this trip to Babylon worthwhile !!!!

CD one has a widely accessible range using new wave and hard house beats we commonly associate with the "Babylon" genre. The second CD expands on the "Babylon" theme further stepping "out" by using darker beats that are more "circuit" or "NYC" beats I am used to.. "Babylon" never compromises. Both CD are really solid and both are unique enough to stand alone or playing in sequence...

"Lio", "Delerium", "Mandalay" "Kosheen", "Roc Project", "The Chemical Brothers" and "Gioia" are strangely absent from this compilation which were featured throughout seasons 2 and 3 provided the "queer" sound that became associated with QAF. This by no means takes anything at all from this truly awesome CD . Chris Cox and Abel Aguilera do an excellent job in stepping away from that and featuring artists that are truly unique add showcasing new ones to QAF

i laughed... I cried... I celebrated... I had a melacholy experience with Season 5 closing what is essentially a groundbreaking television this CD lets you take some of that "Babylon" home!!!!

I had a night out with Brian, Mikey, and boys of Babylon

The only thing I want more of is "Babylon Series" CDs!!!!!

On Chant Down Babylon, Bob Marley's master tapes meet the next generation. Marley hardly needs help selling records, so these studio-engineered duets may reflect an honest attempt at linking his musical legacy with contemporary artists. Even those sympathetic to the concept, though, should wonder if it's wise to substitute new backing tracks for the original sinuous grooves of "Concrete Jungle" and "Rebel Music." (To the disc's credit, the rhythms of "No More Trouble" and "Rastaman Chant" are left largely intact.) And as obvious as the connection between reggae and hip-hop is, Guru ("Johnny Was") and even Chuck D ("Survival a.k.a. Black Survivors") have nothing to add to Marley's perfectly chosen words. Finally, don't be surprised if your patience wears as several of Marley's sons help travesty "Kinky Reggae." --Rickey Wright

The Marley sound is strong in these updates by his sons and other great rap/hip hop artists. The sound will take you back to the Bob Marley era but just as quick transport you to a new and exciting sound for Bob's reggae standards. I'm glad I made this part of my Bob Marley collection.

1 out of 5 stars Bob isnt here to stop the sale of this cd, but i am.......2006-06-30

If you want to kill everything bob marley stood for and did in his life, buy this album. This album is an insult to bob as a musician and as a person and a disgrace to his legacy. If i could give this cd less than 1 star i would. If you still buy this cd despite what has been written about it and you like, you should not call yourself a bob fan, just like everyone else that gave this more than a star..it doesnt even diserve that.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT URBAN TRIBUTE TO A LEGEND... why all the anger from our 1 star givers?? This CD is NO insult!!.......2006-04-20

Read this review in its entirety... (especially if u gave it less than 3 stars) I'm empathizing with those who are giving this album 1 star, but for the life of me I don't see why.... This album is in NO WAY insulting to Bob Marley. Was it insulting to Patti Labelle when P!nk, Lil Kim, Mya, and C. Aguilera remade and remixed Lady Marmelade? Uh, No. Is the Luther Vandross Tribute Album insulting? No. This is the cycle of our times people... That's what makes black people beautiful, our music, our culture.. how we can mix and match it and its still just as beautiful. There is nothing wrong with this cd and although of course I cannot speak for Bob Marley anymore than any of you can... To say he would not be happy is obsurd, how do we know what would make him happy? We don't! But to say the album is garbage to me is an insult to the artists who came together to blend with the Legend. I do not at all think it was a poor or sore attempt.. I think it was very creative. People do remixes all the time... so what, it's ok for 50 Cent but not Bob? lol... be serious, this is about the music. And aside from Defending Bob Til Death as some of you are admirably doing, these tracks do not degrade him or his music in any way... What this cd Does is ALLOW BOB MARLEY TO BE APPRECIATED THRU THE TIMES... and yes, you should appreciate the original tracks!! But lets be real, a lot of people can't get into some of the original tracks so what this CD does is Open up a door for appreciation across the genre boundaries. It allows the "hip hop heads" so to speak who may sooner recognize the name "Lil Scrappy" before "The Wailers" to embrace the Marley ESSENCE... it's just like a baby, if u want your child to each vegetables, maybe u mix them with some rice... if you want them to intake more calcium.. maybe u let them drink Ovaltine.. are you degrading Calcium? lol.. anyway, moving along... This is an awesome cd that embraces BoB Marleys talent and mixes it with our evolving urban style... I think they did an excellent job on the cd. All too often "remix" and "master mixes" drown out the quality of the songs we come to love and respect an artist for but this project was the exact opposite! I love the original tracks, but I must admit I am loving Some twists on the tracks JUST as much! Especially REBEL MUSIC and JOHNNY WAS... I don't want to go thru track titles cuz I'll end up naming them all... Each track and the guest artists get a thumbs up to me, at least for creativity... I see the vision of what this CD was and I like it. Most definiately a must have for raggae/raggaeton music lovers, especially, but anyone who likes urban music should be able to appreciate this album... And while you are at it, check out Matisyahu! Excellent addition to a family of cultural music artists.

Stephen Marley did a wonderful job at integrating his father's master pieces with a twist of hip hop & R&B. It is a CD that stays in my player at all times.

yo to josh"big smoke". i can see your view very easily, i think anyone can that has listened to the album. but you have to understand these rap artists present their arguments in different wayz, these boys and girls will never be as peaceful or humble as Mr.Marley, but they are trying to convey their message of peace their own way, ya know, trying to act as one with Bob. thats what i think. take it how you want it.

4 out of 5 stars mano! negra! ya! ya! ya!.......2007-01-30

The final and most mature effort from Mano Negra, basically driven by Manu Chao before he went solo and ironic for that fact since it is so much more rock and electronic than his subsequent solo work. Mano Negra were a great, interesting, rocking band that were entertaining as well as thought-provoking. Some people have called them 'the latin Clash' and there are definitely similarities although the Mano Negra were obviously on the scene a little later. A great album for fans, but as others have noted, maybe Puta's Fever would be a better initiation to the band.

Good to see everyone speaks so highly of this CD.

What can you say about Mano Negra that has not been said? This CD is one of the best top 10 Castellano rock albums of all times. How do I know this? Well besides being from Buenos Aires I have traveled Latin America and España all my life and this CD is always in any hip rock bar's jukebox from Argentina to Mexico. It's true + what Manu did with Clandestino, etc... set this cd into eternal immortality. Rock, rap, reggae, Caribbean sounds, punk, English, Castellano, French (+ you start to notice Manu playing around with the sounds bites from TV and radio on this album) Buy it and you will not be disappointed. Amazon has all from Manu and Mano Negra on here which you should check out. Look for the Bolivian mountain sessions on MP3 Download sites, also has a rare Mano Negra appearance at a French prison early 90's. I MEAN IT. I WASN'T SURE TO BUY THIS ALBUM BECAUSE I WASN`T SURE IT WAS MY STYLE YOU KNOW, I WAS (AND AM) INTO SONIC YOUTH, DEAD KENNEDYS, KYUSS, HENDRIX, FUNKADELIC AND THE MARS VOLTA, BUT I BOUGHT IT A FEW MONTHS AGO AND IT IS MIND BLOWING. YOU CAN`T DOWNLOAD JUST "SOME SONGS" BECAUSE THIS ALBUM IS ALMOST A CONCEPT ALBUM, YOU GOTTA HEAR IT THE WHOLE WAY THROUGH. I DON`T GIVE A XX@@€ ABOUT THE VARIETY OF STYLES, I REALLY DIG IT BEACAUSE OF THE VERY CORE OF MUSIC ITSELF. ENERGY, PASSION, FIRE. YOU`LL NEVER GONNA GET TIRED OF THIS CD. NOW, I MEAN IT.

5 out of 5 stars Creeme, es increible.......2005-03-01

The first time I heard Manu's voice was in my spanish class two years ago. I immediately bought his solo cd, Clandestino, and i loved it, so I bought "Casa Babylon" and now it's one of my favorite CDs. The rhythms are perfect for people who like to dance (like me) and the words are also really good. Two songs are slow and incredible, very powerful: "mama perfecta" and "sueno de solentiname" and the other songs are faster and just as fantastic. It seems very sophisticated and there are a lot of different sounds although the disc is very united. Other bands/artists I like: The Beatles, The Greatful Dead, Led Zeppelin, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, The Allman Brothers, and other American groups from the 60s and 70s ('hippie' music).

4 out of 5 stars a classic?.......2004-05-08

i agree that romeo's album does not always get the full credit that it deserves. i am not sure that this album is a classic. i do know that it contains a classic with the title song. and herein lies the problem, no other songs on the album reaches the pike as war in babylon. they still deserve a listen to, nevertheless. one step forward, chase the devil, norman, and smokey room are all good songs.another reason as to why i like album is that it focuses on the gap that exists between the rich and poor...(uptown babies don't cry basically still applies to prsent state of our world where the poor continues to suffer at the hands of the rich).

5 out of 5 stars a classic.......2000-09-15

This lp has everything a reggae fan could possibly want- great grooves, pertinent vocals, and Lee "Scratch" Perry.

This is certainly one of the most underrated and consistent efforts I have come across. Romeo's stylings mix perfectly with the tight grooves of the Upsetters. He came a long way from his "Wet Dream" single in the late 60's, and it shows through clearly on the lp.....Of course, Perry's presence is written all over the lp, which just adds to its greatness.

Fans of this lp should also get Perry's amazing "Arkology" 3 cd set for many alternate takes from Romeo, Junior Murvin, etc... It offers incredible insight into the amazing mind of both Perry and Romeo, who made a great team.

"Lucifer, son of the morning, I'm gonna chase you outta earth." -Max Romeo

You did just that, Maxxie. Jah be praised.

5 out of 5 stars Reggae Classic.......1999-12-01

I thought surely when I heard this record that it was a "greatest hits" compilation. It was so consistent and sure. Prior to this record, Max Romeo had a reputation for sexually explicit (for the times) and sexually suggestive lyrics. This record shows his socio-political consciousnes with such tracks as "Uptown Babies Don't Cry," "One Step," and the title track.

The only bad thing about this recording is that it makes me wistful for the days when razor-sharp super tight rhythm sections, wonderful harmonies, activist lyrics and good melodies were standard fare in Jamaican music. Sadly, automation and dancehall simplicity have eaten the music.

Nonetheless, Lee Scratch Perry and the Upsetters put a fine gloss on Max's diamond. Complete with rootsy scratch style guitar and the musicality of the Jamaican patois, this record is a classic example of what reggae used to be at its best.

5 out of 5 stars Max Romeo grows up into a soulful and spiritual adult........1999-11-15

Max Romeo's team up with the Upsetters is a dynamite mix. Under the tutoring of famed Reggae producer Lee "Scratch" Perry, they combine with songs that are both soulful and contain an almost fervent religious appeal. Max Romeo transcends his earlier "Dirty Boy" stage, showing great maturity over his previous albums such as "Wet Dream". Always insightful and entertaining, "War Ina Babylon" features two of the best Reggae songs in this reviewers opinion: "Smile outta Style, and the title track "War Ina Babylon". While not for the ears of those who have only known reggae threw popular act's ie, UB40 and Big Mountain, those who have bought Bob Marley albums other than just the two Legend CD's are in for a delight.

    Album Description

    "A certifiable genius." - BBC

"Lee Perry is a towering figure in reggae - a producer, mixologist, and songwriter who, along with King Tubby, helped shape the sound of dub and made reggae music such a powerful part of the pop music world." - ALL MUSIC GUIDE

Fresh from his Grammy win for Best Reggae Album, Lee "Scratch" Perry has granted the wish of many and returned with yet another amazing release! Panic in Babylon is the new full-length epic, with a unique catchiness and hypnotizing rhythm only Perry's hands could bring to life. Relax and soak in the album's sharply enriching tones as the renowned "Father of Dub" takes you for a psychotropic journey throughout life's highs and lows. Each tune's signature reggae echo bounces giddily off the inner walls of your head, sending thick, magnetic currents throughout your legs and hips.

Lee "Scratch" Perry, being the sly producer he is, adds a distinctly untried edge to Panic in Babylon. The album's backing musicians have shared stories of Perry's constant approach with newfangled ideas - suggestions that seem musically impossible but, when executed, end up making absolute sense.

Originally released in Switzerland in 2005, Panic in Babylon is set to hit U.S. shores in August 2006. The Narnack version features a bonus disc of new collaborations with George Clinton, TV on the Radio, DJ Spooky, and more!

    5 out of 5 stars Nice Album!.......2006-09-11

I first heard the track "I Am A Psychiatrist" on my Sirius satellite radio, and I was immediately hooked! This track is so BOMB (good) that I wanted to buy the cd immediately. I listened to samples of the rest of the disc at my local record store with equal approval. While many fans consider Scratch an icon in reggae music, I have generally been disappointed with a lot of his works (bad production values, inane lyrics, forgettable stuff). Not so with this one. I believe that reggae music fans in general and Scratch fans in particular will find favor with this offering.

    5 out of 5 stars Solid CD.......2006-09-05

Panic In Babylon is solid and strong, some of the best reggae Scratch has made in decades! On the main CD there are no dubs, only vocal tracks...so be warned if you prefer your reggae vocal-free...but in spite of that, each and every track is EXCELLENT...strong musically and interesting lyrics throughout. Clean crisp bass...mysterious melodies. This is a terrific work from the Upsetter!

In the mid '90s, Wall of Voodoo mainstay-turned-solo artist Stan Ridgway bid farewell to the major label treadmill via Drywall's masterfully dark debut and embarked on an indie career as the more historically-rooted, acoustically-centered singer-songwriter found of the compelling Black Diamond, Snakebite and Anatomy albums. The original Drywall concept ("a trilogy of apocalyptic documents") seemed intended to variously antagonize his then-label, subtly evoke his Wall of Voodoo past and offer outlet for his latent "mad scientist" tendencies. But Ridgway has completed that decade-spanning triptych with an album that's closer in tone to his elegiac modern solo work (his main accomplices here are also the same, keyboardist/vocalist Pietra Wextun and guitarist Rick King), if no less thematically provocative than DW's first installment. The infectious, industrialized zydeco of "Goin' On Down to the BBQ" revolves around a typically debauched Ridgway storyline, while elsewhere Stan variously stirs in jazz (the saxed-up "Fortune Cookies"), cinematic cool (the evocative "Somewhere in the Dark" and "Rain On Down") and even folk conceits both nautical ("Abandon Ship," "Robbers & Bandits & Bastards & Thieves") and Celtic (Wexstun's haunting "Bold Marauder"). "The AARP is After Me" and tipsy "Something's Gonna Blow" are filled with typically self-deprecating Ridgway wit, while the electro-edginess of "In Total Focus" and "That Big Weird Thing" contrast sharply with the stark beauty of the morally ambiguous ballad "Buried the Pope." Drywall closes out their first trilogy in rich, expansive style - and ultimately leaves listeners hoping they'll embark on another soon. --Jerry McCulley

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars Um...wow........2007-01-11

I love Stan Ridgway - witness my extensive collection of CDs and ticket stubs. I think he and Peitra are national treasures.
    However.....
I have to say I found this album very hard to get my mind around. I am no stranger to music that is (more than a little) outre'. And I am willing to give anything involving Stan a chance. Several chances. But I honestly didn't enjoy this album. (Sorry Stan)

But it won't keep me from buying the next one!

4 out of 5 stars Righty likes track 16, whoot!.......2006-07-21

All of Stan's work has shown a deep suspicion of the industrial-military complex, heaped and blended with existential nihilism. I never took such a dim view of American life personally, but appreciated his artistic window into the darker side of society. For the record I'm a right-of-center, Republican-leaner who voted for Bush twice and I found track sixteen to be clever and, yes, a bit childish, but fun and I enjoy childish fun even when it steps on my idealogical toes. That being said the rest of the CD is delightfully quirky, loaded with imagery both dark and campy, and sprinkled with childish fun. And very true to Ridgway form this CD is yet another deadpan narrative description of the writhing scaly spectacle that is modernity's underbelly. It's kind of like David Lynch for the ears. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was that I didn't feel it rose to the level of "Work the Dumb Oracle".

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece of Strange / Pop Art for 2006.......2006-04-22

Continuing an on-again/off-again relationship with his Drywall side project that began in 1986 with Work the Dumb Oracle, the third album in Stan Ridgway's "trilogy of apocalyptic documents" isn't substantially different from his better-known solo work, at least on this 2006 release. His carnival barker vocals, bizarre lyrics, and shapeshifting cinematic soundscapes are in fine twisted form as the songs morph from the moody, bluesy harmonica-laced "Bury the Pope" to the more experimental subtle electronica textures of "Rain on Down" and the whimsical, Tex-Mex party atmosphere of "Goin' on Down to the BBQ." Co-Drywall conspirators/multi-instrumentalists Pietra Wexstun and especially Rick King are relegated to sideline status as Ridgway's distinctive vocals and lyrics dominate the proceedings. The diverse sounds combine aspects of Tom Waits (the percussive "The Alibi Room" sounds like an outtake from Rain Dogs), jazzy noir lounge ("Somewhere in the Dark"), Yello ("That Big Weird Thing"), and even world music ("Bold Marauder" is sung by Wexstun doing her best Grace Slick impression), but ultimately seem like Ridgway pushing his already elastic musical boundaries. At just over an hour, including a humorous bonus track that features sentences from George W. Bush speeches cut-and-pasted to mean something far different than what was originally intended, there is a lot to listen to here. Each track is overdubbed multiple times with layers of sound effects and instruments requiring repeated listenings to fully absorb. As with many Ridgway projects, the lyrical theme is obtuse but the music is so challenging, quirky, and innovative that the whole shebang is a mesmerizing musical trip. Anyone already a Ridgway fan will be thrilled, and open-minded newcomers might find enough of interest here to seek out his earlier, arguably more cohesive albums. Barbeque Babylon is a fun, often but not always lighthearted romp with the participants obviously enjoying themselves by painting a sonic palette the equivalent of '60s pop art. Part pastiche, part storytelling, and part experimental, the album finds Ridgway at the peak of his powers, creating music that demands attention even if at times it doesn't take itself seriously.

    3 out of 5 stars Track 16 is ridiculous.......2006-02-10

While I have Stan's full collection of solo stuff and love it, this album may not stay in my collection. There are some fantastic songs and truly innovating and amazinginly talented musicality on this one that we expect and usually get from Stan by the truckload. But I'm writing my comments primarily for the untitled #16 track. I'm not a republican or a democrat. Politics has nothing to do with it but the disrespect and childish editing of the President is embarrassing. The time, technology and (what they may of thought as cool) effort that they put in to making this stupid and over the top ridiculous word editing joke ruins the whole album for me. Perhps a few lines intended to make a point and reflect a measure of personal view would be "artistic" and acceptable but Drywall goes way too far with what they're saying here. A display of that much anti-american sentiment makes me think Drywall should move to Iraq and open up a recording studio there and tour the middle east, North Korea and Afganistan. Free expression, personal point of view and the right to say them are God given rights. But track 16 is just simply bad form, bad taste and childish. I would feel the same way if they did this obsurdity to Clinton as well. Track 16 isn't politics just stupid, really stupid.

5 out of 5 stars Stan at top of form!.......2005-11-23

I'm here to tell you this is the best Stan Ridgway CD! A fan since the vinyl days of Wall of Voodoo, heard all the solo stuff (great, get it!), but this album is an absolute must buy. Killer stuff, classic Ridgway. The best yet!!
