5 out of 5 stars Wonderful tribute to sadly overlooked artist.......2000-05-01

Sadly overlooked by virtually everyone but fellow musicians during his lifetime, Alexis Korner was one of the cornerstones of the British blues movement. Bands such as the Rolling Stones by their own admission would never have existed were it not for Mr. Korner. "Musically Rich and Famous" is unfortunately the only comprehensive anthology of this bluesmasters work presently available. Many thanks are due Castle Records for lovingly compiling the 32 tracks and 142 minutes contained in this double disc anthology which spans Korner's post Blues Incorporated recordings from 1967-1982. The set includes contributions by Eric Clapton, Robert Plant, Andy Fraser, Paul Rogers, Peter Frampton, Steve Marriott, Keith Richards, and Nicky Hopkins, among others. Playing gritty, true to the soul blues, Korner was a master guitarist who possessed an honest, if less than beautiful voice. The genuiness of his artisty shines throughout this collection. It is one of the great tragedies of popular music that Korner did not generate greater record sales and is not recognized by the record buying public as one of the fathers of contemporary blues. Do yourself a favor and buy "Musically Rich and Famous" and discover for yourself the artistry of the late Alexis Korner.

      3 out of 5 stars Hawkwind - 'Anthology,1967-1982' (Essential).......2006-10-01

Two CD's, a total of thirty-two tracks that have been lifted from various Hawkwind compilations, like 'Acid Daze,Volumes 2 and 3', 'Text Of Festival', 'Space Ritual 2' and the WAY-over reissued (again and again and AGAIN) 'Bring Me The Head Of Yuri Gagarin'(see my review of each of the titles). SURE,there are decent cuts here like "Hash Cake '77", the Watchfield Festival snippet of "We Do It / Brainstorm" and "Urban Guerrilla", but this budget-priced title is obviously aimed toward the completists.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely essential anthology........2006-09-26

This is essential for all Hawkfans. Every last one of the tracks on this double CD are alternate takes & handpicked by Dave Brock himself. Very extensive detailed liner notes & band history. What more could you want. Excellent.

4 out of 5 stars A great starting point for fans of the Father of British Blues!.......2006-08-10

Good sound, good track order and interesting sleevenotes means that this set is really very pleasant to own. Alexis Korner is helped out by more than a few famous guys (like Stevie Marriott, Robert Plant and Keith Richards) and that shows the great respect they all had for him. I bought this when it first came out and there are quite a few highlights such as "Steal Away" with Robert Plant on vocals and harp, "I Don't Know" and a killer version of "Honky Tonk Woman" with Korner solo on acoustic guitar. Although it doesn't start until the period of the late 1960s, this set is the one that gets my vote for the anthologies that are available at the moment. Why didn't I give it 5 stars? Well, I dunno but I would probably have run to 4 1/2 if there was a button to do it!!

      1 out of 5 stars just awful.......2004-05-24

A good selection of songs, but an absolutely abysmal quality of sound. I have never heard a disc that sounds this BAD. Stay away, avoid, run fast, run far. Do not buy this disc.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding two CD Hawkwind summary.......2000-01-06

Undoubtedly one of the most unappreciated and ridiculed bands in the United Kingdom, Hawkwind was a true enigma. The eccentric British accepted Hawkwind's lunacy but rejected their musical frenzy. The sophistication that we hear in most European musical endeavors is indeed lacking. Instead Hawkwind presented us with a powerful spellbounding sound which was both mystical and spacy. This two-CD anthology includes the highlights of the band's history which is close to three decades in length. The classics are here such as "Hurry On Sundown", "Space Is Deep", "Motorhead", and "Urban Guerrilla". However that is just a small sampling of the close to 2 and 1/2 hours of music here. All the songs were carefully selected and are quite representative of the group's long and exotic career. A truly creative and unique band.

2 out of 5 stars Not as Good as I Thought It Would Be.......1999-10-09

This album is not a good one for folks just getting into - or wanting to get into - Hawkwind's music. The quality of the live tracks is abysmal. I found the only good part of the two CD set to be the additional material at the end from "Xenon Codex" and "Electric Teepee". Find another anthology to get the full scope of their music.

4 out of 5 stars For the newcomer.......2006-08-21

It's a tough decision for a newcomer to a musician's oeuvre to decide where to start. It's difficult to start at the beginning--hunting down the musician's first work and then collecting or listening in chronologial order. That's time consuming, and all most want to do is add an item to the shopping cart, click, and wait for the amazon shipment in the mail. This is a good overview of Alexis Korner's great body of work. Here you'll find the brilliant and playful tunes that are all available elsewhere. Some of ask, why couldn't you finally release "Just Easy," a great Germany only release? There are two tracks from that fine recording here, and it just gives me hope that one day that fine recording will finally be given it's place in digital history.
