3 out of 5 stars Its OK not the best of the Pebble Series.......2006-05-03

This CD wasn't bad its just not up to par with the rest of this awesome series. Now I really don't dig the surf vocals their too clean and poppy for my tastes. I likes my music with some sugar but also with a greasy blast of a bacon cheeseburger chased down with a bitter tequlia! I like surf vocals that are rowdy and raunchy like Surfin' Bird. There is some good ones on here like The California Sun's "Masked Grandma", Lloyd Thaxton telling you what it takes to be a surfer in "Image of a Surfer", the awesome gritty sloppy surf punk by the Readymen called "Shortnin' Bread", then the alcholic song "Wine, Wine, Wine" by the Bleach Boys. Then its on to my favorite part of the CD the instrumentals cheif among them being "LSD-25" by the Gamblers this is probably the first drug record since it was recorded in 1961! Then the last song "Big Surfer" by Brian Lord a insane song where the guy sounds like a Jhon F. Kennedy clone. There is strong material on this CD but I expected better out of the pebbles series.

5 out of 5 stars An UFO in the peebles serie : surf music at its best.......2005-09-10

This is the only Peebles presenting Surf Music. The good thing is that they worked in the same way on this one to find obscure surf songs with "something".
A great collection of surf songs (mostly vocals) including less known songs from great bands (Pyramids, Rivieras,...). On the CD vs vinyl, they added bonus tracks from even more obscure surf/hot rod bands... and even the almost impossible to find instrumental "LSD25" of the gamblers. A great album.

4 out of 5 stars Good Surfing Tunes!.......2005-04-08

If you listen to this CD on its own merits, without comparing to the other PEBBLES volumes, you will find this is a great collection of Surf tunes. Original cracks and pops from the 45s left in for that crazy beach 45 player ambience. If this is your thing, try Ace Records BEACH PARTY reissue also. COWABUNGA!

1 out of 5 stars Don't bother unless you're a surf rock completist.......2004-06-02

Despite wearing the PEBBLES moniker, this is as far as you can get from a garage band compilation! Veering from the dark recesses of America's high school garages, this volume instead reissues ultra-obscure surf rock tunes. Unfortunately, this time round the tunes have remained obscure for a reason: they all try to be the next Jan & Dean or The Beach Boys. A few cool songs, including The Dantes' "Top Down Time", still don't justify purchasing this one. Skip it and move on to the real PEBBLES!

California may be the largest state in the Union, but it's only one state nuzzling one ocean, with only so many people living near the coastline, and a small minority of them have attempted to navigate waves on a board, much less possess the fetching physique to do so in public. Obviously, then, surf music isn't for surfers. If it were, Rhino would put out a greatest-hits EP instead of a four-disc box set. Cowabunga! is all the permanent-wave stuff most people will ever need. The discs are arranged in a curious manner: disc 1, "Ground Swells," chronicles the years from 1960 to 1963; disc 2 features nothing but recordings from '63; the third CD runs from '63 to '67; and the coda captures the postpunk renaissance that began in '77. Curious, isn't it, that there was so little going on in surf between '67 and '77? Maybe Jimi Hendrix almost killed it when he promised (in 1967!), "You'll never hear surf music again" on "Third Stone from the Sun." But Hendrix is dead, and Dick Dale lives! So, too, do the Revels, the Beach Boys, the Surfaris, Annette Funicello, the Ventures, and dozens of others. At least they do in this anthology. By the way, "cowabunga" is "a yell of excitement by a surfer." You learn that from the helpful glossary included in the excellent liner notes by John Blair, leader of Jon & the Nightriders. As to the lasting appeal of surf music, perhaps it has something to do with the fact that it's mostly instrumental. People make jokes about dumb California blonds, but the ones who made most of the classic surf sides knew one thing: it's wise at times to keep your mouth shut and play! --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable.......2005-12-10

I live in the vicinity of Orange County, CA, and have to come to realize that most surfers of this day and age don't really care for this classic music. Their loss - this is brilliant rock music. I would put the caliber of musicianship on display here up against any rock musicians anywhere...Also, the craft involved: you have to have great melodies in order for an instrumental to succeed and all this stuff does...

As a bumper sticker I saw recently said, "why can't we all just get a longboard?"...

5 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 Stars: Great Box Set!.......2004-09-09

Massive, if not quite definitive, four-CD, 82-track box set of surf music. The first three discs are devoted to material from the genre's '60s prime, and the fourth devoted to revivalists from 1977 to 1995. If your interest runs very deep, this should satisfy, placing most of the emphasis on instrumentals rather than vocals (though significant efforts in the latter vein by the Beach Boys, Jan & Dean, and others are included). It has most of the big hits, and quite a few of the ones which were principally popular in Southern California, as well as some neat rarities that are hard to find anywhere, like the Illusions' storming "Jezebel," and the Surfmen's "Paradise Cove," the Latin-surf hybrid of Dave Myers's "Moment of Truth," the Sandals' "Theme From Endless Summer," and the Sunrays' Beach Boys Xerox, "I Live for the Sun." The fourth disc of modern-day revivalists is interesting but not essential, except perhaps in the minds of the Rhino compilers. It's the first three discs that really deal with the heart of the matter. The 66-page booklet has voluminous annotation and lots of great photos, especially the booklet's cover photo - a surfer playing a Fender Jaguar guitar - while surfing! Hopefully, it's unplugged. - Richie Unterberger, AMG

This box is worth the money one has to pay since its OOP. Also check out ebay since it always has some auctions on this item.

However, since it is hard to find, try to seek a copy. The box itself is nice, as well as the booklet. The music is fantastic and otherwise hard to find!

5 out of 5 stars If you can find it, GET IT!.......2004-06-24

Simply the best collection of surf tune's available!
Almost as good as that sacred milk crate full of surf LP's...except on CD. Almost as good as "Learn Guitar with the Ventures". Totally awesome like seeing Dick Dale tearing it up live. It's like watching the Tornadoes and the Belairs and the Chantays live and all on the same bill. Dude!...why are you reading this? Go out there...find it...buy it...like, now, dude.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2004-03-26

Alot Of the music was before my time but i found this to very uplifting and a value to anyone else. you should think about getting this set and any other set that is like this one. It will be money well spent.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Chocolate - Relive the 70's and Get your Groove on.......2004-12-26

Hot chocolate, definitely had the Disco Groove going on. Let the band and Errol Brown bring you back to the 70's hayday with groovy tracks such as ... You Sexy Thing, So You Win Again, Every 1's A Winner, Get Down On It amongst others. If you like Hot Chocolate this is your fix for the complete album.

Get It and Get Down!

4 out of 5 stars A good collection at a great price.......2003-02-04

Although I think the collection "Every 1's A Winner - the Very Best of Hot Chocolate" (red cover) is a little better retrospective, you can't beat the price for this CD. With its focus on Hot Chocolate's 1970s songs, it leaves off a couple of good 80s tunes, but it includes the essential tracks You Sexy Thing and Every 1's A Winner. Some may even prefer this one, because it also includes some good songs not found on the other album. (So get both - I did!) Although a few songs sound like filler, there are plenty of catchy melodies and great rhythms.

      5 out of 5 stars 70's Scorps.......2006-03-14

For those who are not sure whether to buy this compilation of seventies Scorpions? Here's some help.

Tracks 1-5 are taken from the 1974 album "Fly To The Rainbow".
Tracks 6-11 are taken from the 1975 album "In Trance".
Tracks 12-17 are taken from the 1976 album "Virgin Killer".

One thing I don't understand is how come this compilation did not feature anything from "Taken By Force" and "Tokyo Tapes-Live" (both released in 1978)? I mean it was the Scorpions last two albums on RCA before signing to Mercury to make "Lovedrive" (1979).

As for the sound quality? The sound is pretty good. Don't expect Rhino Records remastering sound. Remember these songs were made in the mid seventies.

Highlight rockers off this album : "Speedy's Coming", "Virgin Killer" and "Catch Your Train"

      5 out of 5 stars The Scorpions...........2004-11-26

... at probably their very best. A lot of people remember Scorpions just because of hits like "Blackout", "Rock You Like A Hurricane", "Wind Of Change", "You And I" etc.

Well, that's not a bad thing. But check out their earlier albums! You'll be blown away! This complilation plays a role in that. While I'll admit that IMHO, they left out some great songs, I also realise that it is a compilation disc and they can't fit EVERYTHING in it.

I recommend this CD. It'll broaden your horizon as regards Scorpions.

5 out of 5 stars "You think you know, but you have no idea.".......2003-07-21

Many people that know Scorpions only know of their "mercury years." (The albums they released here in the states.) Well you've got another thing coming. The scorpions with Klauss Meine, and Uli Roth created some of the hottest tunes while establishing their career in Germany. This collection of their greatest hits from the early years (70's) includes some of their finest work like "Pictured Life," Robot Man," In Trance," "Virgin Killer," "Yellow Raven," etc. If you like scorpions American debut albums like Blackout, Savage Amusement, and Pure Instinct, I strongly urge you to get their early albums. Its heavy-metal at its finest. This album is a perfect place to start because it will give you samples from their early years. So Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars It has all the best songs from the Scorpions in the 70's.......2003-06-20

It has all the best songs from the Scorpions in the 70's. It contains five songs out of the all the Scorpions albums from the 70's, from the album "Fly to the Rainbow" to "Virgin Killer" which in all would be 17 songs(2 of the songs in there, I don't know what album they came from, I think they're bonuses). Though they didn't put the songs from their first album in there or the songs from their last two 70's album which contained Ulrich Jon Roth in one of them, I would recommend this album if you are a fan of the Scorpions songs from the eighties such as Rock you like a hurricane or Big City nights. You would definetely love this CD then.

5 out of 5 stars The "Real" Scorpions.......2000-10-17

This is it! This cd is all you need. The only problem is there's no songs from Lovedrive. However, this seems to concentrate only from the RCA era. (a.k.a.- The Uli Roth Days!!) After Lovedrive, the Scorpions were more interested in making money than good music. Although, who can really blame them? Even though their commercial success came from Blackout thru Crazy World, a "real" Scorpion fan knows that this is the best of their best!

4 out of 5 stars Just for "El Bimbo".......2006-03-10

This is the only Cd I could find with El Bimbo and Chinese Kung Fu! Both are proto-disco classics. The rest is decent, but hardly as noteworthy.

        5 out of 5 stars A Great Compilation.......2003-11-05

Best cuts here are "Waterbed", "Chinese Kung Fu", "Undecided Love", "Breakaway", and "Mud Wind". A great collection of early disco music.

5 out of 5 stars A great example of early underground disco from the mid '70s.......2003-10-16

This CD complation is truly an exellent display of underground disco music from disco's infancy. Also, these songs are featured in their extended "Disco Mix" format, remixed by vetrean DJ and remixer Tom Moulton, possibly the first DJ to present extended remixes. If you are seriously into the origins of disco music, I urge you to buy this CD (as well as "Disco Gold" Vol.1) just for this reason alone!
"Disco Gold", Vol. 2 (as well as Vol. 1) was origanally released as a gate-fold vinyl LP on Florence Greenberg's Scepter label in 1975. Inside the gate-fold LP cover, its credits included the the names of popular disco clubs and DJ's from across the U.S. at that time.
This indepentent label (along with it's affiliated label, Wand Records) saw it's glory days in the 1960s with such artists as The Shirelles (Dedicated To The One I Love), B.J. Thomas (I'm So Lonesome I could Cry), Dionne Warwick (Don't Make Me Over), The Isley Brothers (Twist And Shout), Chuck Jackson (Any Day Now), Maxine Brown (Oh No, Not My Baby) and The Kingsmen (Louie, Louie--the label's biggest smash), amoung many others.
By the early '70s, the label drifted into the background due to it's artist either moving to the major labels, or just simply fading away. from 1971 to 1974, there were only 2 top 20 hits from Scepter--B.J. Thomas' "No Love At All", and "Rock And Roll Lullabye"--in 1971 and 1972, respectivly.
However, by the fall of 1974, Scepter Records enjoyed a huge but short comeback with a pair of smash hits by B.T. Express, "Do It ('Til You're Satisfied)" and again a few months later with the instrumental funk hit, "Express"in early 1975--Secpter's first top 10 hits since "I Just Can't Help Believing" by B.J. Thomas in 1970.
After the success of the hits by B.T. Express, Scepter ventured into the nightclub/disco market with extended mixes. Other than TK, Salsoul and Roulette Records, Scepter was, most likely, the first of the independant labels to release the extended "Disco Mix" to the record-buying public.
Unfortunately, by 1976, after the release of their first (and last) 12 inch single ("Nice And Slow" by Jesse Green), Scepter Records' president and label founder since 1959, Florence Greenberg decided to call it quits and retire. She sold the label to Roadshow Productions, a company which was affiliated with RCA at the time.
