Album Description
Two cracking late-`70s albums from Blues Rock guitarist Johnny Winter. Muddy Waters and James Cotton feature on Nothin' But The Blues. Johnny Winter is still actively gigging and recording. Digitally re-mastered and slipcased. New notes.
Customer Reviews:
Two of his best!.......2007-06-15
This is a great opportunity to have both these albums on CD. I have both on CD and vinyl already, but the remastering is very good. Despite being 30 years since original release they are still a great collection of blues. Check out the re-issued "Johnny Winter" "Second Winter" and "Progressive Blues Experiment" CDs.
About time these albums were re released........2007-06-12
Having owned both of them on vinyl since the late 70's I was amazed to see that finally they are out together no less. Two great albums by a man on top of his game. By the way my turn table has gone the way of the steam engine but the albums are still in pristine order.
JW in His Prime, Taking His Time.......2007-05-15
Firstly, you probably already have these on vinyl and want to know if the quality is there. Yes, these are Sony authorized productions. In fact, they are digitally remastered...it's sounds great, no worries. And yes both albums are on a single CD. Nothing But.. has been out for years and is a great blues album. Backed by Muddy's band including James Cotton on harp, this recording of original material has JW singing good time, rough, heartfelt blues. Unlike the earlier arena rock albums, he slows it down and delivers core blues. Also the relaxed time and fun in studio really comes through here. Now this is the first I've found White, Hot & Blue on CD, and thank God for that. This is a total gem of a recording. Same core blues, but definitely more plugged in. Backed by a very tight group of smoking players, this finds JW on primarily covers, putting the originals in their best possible light. The surprise is Pat Ramsey on harp, I can't say if he's technically great, but he sounds awesome. The best description of this album, "slinky." These recordings supported JW on tour enlightening us to purely American music played by a man that can only be described as a National Treasure. I dare you to listen to these recordings and be in a bad mood.

Ice Cold.......2007-07-24
Kiss in heavenly white satin, but without their parent group's innate humor or pure rock savy. Zappa's hysterically funny parody of this band in "Punky's Whips" says it all: the only thing they're worth is a footnote in the history of rock 'n' roll. Epitomizes the worst excesses of 70s cockrock fashion.
Film Focus (The non score music edition).......2006-08-21
Okay, I'll admit that this review may seem high, but only if you're not an Angel fan. I think that this is their best overall album and truly enjoy most of the songs. There are times I wish they would lower the range of the music and vocals because at times it seems as if the band is playing the notes too high and the vocalist has to scream the lyrics to keep up. But for the most part, this is a good Summer album for driving around and remembering high school. And hey, what can you say about the cover art featuring a bunch of tall skinny white guys in spandex?
Very cool!
The most underrated band ever. .......2006-03-14
I agree with the reviewer that would give all of their albums 5 stars (Sinful only gets 4) so I must be biased too. I bought White Hot when it first came out when I was 10. I rocked out to it constantly and it ended up being one of my favorite albums of all time. It still is. I'm now middle aged and I still rock out to it and always will. I saw them live back in 1978 and I still have memories of what a terrific concert it was. I never understood why they didn't get extremely popular. I want to thank them for all of the great music and the hard work that they put into it. There are those of us that appreciate it.
Angel - 'White Hot' (MCA).......2006-03-05
Originally released in 1978,this was Angel's fifth album.Overall,it's decent glam/glitter heavy rock.Always heard that with the RIGHT promotion,Angel could've easily been one of the '70's greats.Guess we'll never really know.Cuts that sort of made me sit up and take some notice were "Don't Leave Me Lonely",the Rascal's cover "Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore",their ballad "Flying With Broken Wings(Without You)" and "You Could Lose Me".Could appeal to open-minded fans of Cheap Trick,Status Quo,Kiss and possibly even Aerosmith or Van Halen. Can't go wrong with this title's price, that's for sure.
Late 70's Cheese Rock at it's Best!.......2004-10-10
(...) Angel wasn't about exploding rock conventions by playing 3 chord rock songs badly. They pretty much held up rock conventions by playing well-crafted arena rock tunes with competance and flair. Gee, what a crime.
I really like this album. Songs like "Don't Leave Me Lonely" and "Over and Over" are prime examples of 70's pop meets "boot up your ass" rock with plaintive vocals. "Got Love if You Want It" shows that these guys can actually play, and rock out hard (drummer Barry Brandt kicks ass, by the way). Stuff like "Ain't Going to Eat Out My Heart Anymore" is a muscular re-invention of an obvious influence (The Rascals), and "Flying With Broken Wings" is a wonderfully melodic nod to the Fab Four. If you're a fan of synth-sweetened 70's arena rock, this album should be at the top of your list.

White Hot Blues - Johnny Winter.......2007-01-19
No problem to keep warm in the winter when you're in the same room as Winter.....
The man and his music.......2006-09-05
I'm not sure whether i'm reviewing this CD or Johnnny Winter himself. It's really impossible to separate the man and his music, as this compilation is truly the guts of Texas Rock-Blues, and Johnny IS Texas Rock-Blues, period. I'm a guitarist, and i've never lost the love for the TONE that Johnny captures from his Strat. Remember that these pieces come from the late '60's, back when this sort of over-the-top playing was new to much of the listening world (although not to the ones hanging out in these genres.) This music is as powerful a listening experience today as it was then .... and that's saying ALOT, considering how many gyrations this brand of music has evolved through, over the years. ANY player today should be absolutely awed with Johnny's style and playing dynamics. The man's One-Of-A-Kind. This CD exhibits his great picking style as well as his extradinary slind-guitar work too. His slide work is absolutely second to NONE, period. Slide-playing is extremely difficult to master ... some have said that it takes a lifetime of playing to achieve mastery. You'll be thrilled listening to these tracks. Personally, i love the first several tracks, as they capture his super, signature Stratocaster tone. Anyway, the CD is definitely worth a purchase. If you want to add to your Winter and/or rock/blues collection, don't hesitate to pick this baby up. If you're a player, particularly a younger player, and want to feed a gap in your repetoire, stick this baby in your CD changer, crank-up your axe, and try to keep up with the master....and HAVE FUN doing it !
One of the most reminded Rock' s heroes!.......2006-06-14
Johnny Winter occupies a status place at the moment to take a look inside the Rock' s immortals.
The collective memory is fragile, and tend to overlook the particular achievements of this soloist, specially at those times in which the Rock as culture experienced a notable crossover as mass phenomena. The Sixties was the most explosive and creative decade in many senses: sine the Great Festivals the Rock Bands imposed a visible breakthrough.
The Rock itself experimented a crucial crossroad in the middle Sixties: new sounds, new approaches, new expressions but above all a sensible attitude change. Vietnam's disjunctive obligated many ensembles to define themselves, many of them opted by the easiest way and turned his vigorous sound to Pop (Chicago, Grand Funk railroad), but others remained loyal to the basic principle that maintained the Rock should be irreverent and rebel.
Johnny Winter followed his bliss and decided to remain experiencing and playing according his personal code, specially in a choice decision when the Vietnam affair was over and the Rock lost its primary wildness. The Disco Music movement practically constricted the movement of Great Rock Bands in USA. But nevertheless and against all the odds, Winter, Gallagher, Buchanan, Ray Vaughan remained as silent heroes surviving in those ages of evasion and light diversion. Those notable artists knew how to distribute his discography between the Rock and Blues captivating non conformed audiences with handled sounds.
Nowadays Johnny Winter' s profile is extremely low for very known reasons. And iot would be a very good advise to this new Rock generation to take a look around one of the most heralds of the Rock `s essence who, despite his personal attitudes, a bulletproof honesty in which the Rock as culture meant and still (with very counted exceptions) keeps meaning.
Winter: the blues man, the non restricted Rock guitarist, followed his bliss and deserved the coveted pearl.
Winter is a gem.......2001-07-27
I honestly don't undestand why Johnny doesn't get the credit he does. I stumbled on Johnny Winter a few yeats ago, after never before hearing a song by him. It's good that he is respected as much as he is in the guitar world, but I am surprised how little known he is. It may be over-the-top saying he's as good as Hendrix, but he definetly gets close, and his sound is one of the most Hendrixian I've heard. Now as far as the cd goes, I think this is both an excellent start to Winter as well as a kind entrance into the blues. If anyone were to ask me which blues artist to listen to first, I would say Winter. I can also strongly recommend this cd to any Johnny Winter fan. Enjoy!
Awesome.......2001-05-21
This is a great intro to Johnny Winter's brand of rocking Texas blues. It's a collection of tunes from his first several albums starting with his 1969 debut. If you like blues guitar, this is a must have. From the very first track, a rowdy cover of B.B. King's "Rock Me Baby", you'll be blown away. Johnny is right up there with Stevie Ray Vaughan among the greatest white blues guitarists.

Customer Reviews:
Amazing sound! Fantastic CD!!.......2006-04-16
I recently picked up this CD together with Rockabilly Rumble - these CDs rock! I'm a huge fan of 50s rockabilly and rock n' roll and these CDs deliver the goods. The sound quality is excellent and the songs are great. If I had to choose I'd say I prefer the more vintage sounding tunes on the CD - Rockin'Ryan and The Real Goners, Rip Carson, '52 Pickup, Peter and The Wolves and the Long Island Hornets. But all the songs are great. Golly Gee and Raucous when are we going to get Volume 3? I can't wait!
Bad Sample Rate! Horrible...........2005-11-04
The sample rate sounds like telephone quality....like a bad mp3. I wouldn't reccomend this CD.
I am sure the songs are great, but you can't tell...
Glad to add this to my collection!.......2005-08-22
I bought the first volume and this one, too. It's fun to hear people play like they mean it.

Meet the new permanent juveniles.......2005-02-18
Somewhere in a parallel universe, Buster Poindexter was playing his goofy swing/lounge act before he went on a whim to see KISS. In that universe, he drops the martini shtick, ditched the pin stripe suit for his Mom's old dresses and changes his name to David Johansen and forms the New York Dolls, then rockets to fame as the world clutches copies of the NYD debut to their (...).
Well, it's happening here and now. If you remember the flash in the pan swing revival of the late 90's, The Cherry Poppin' Daddies made one of the few memorable albums of the moment with "Zoot Suit Riot." After the inevitable demise of the fad, vocalist Steve Perry (no, NOT the Journey croaker) and guitarist Jason Moss started their own little side project, this White Hot Extravaganza. The band threw off their punky swing and began to concentrate on Dollsy, T Rex riff riots.
Dang if White Hot Odyssey don't kick major powdered wig butt in the dandified process. Insanely juvenile and stoopid in the best way, they steal blatantly from the best sources. AC/DC riffs pop up in "Hot Tub Party," "Subway Killer" cribs from Kiss, and you'll wonder how close David Jo was to the studio when "Popularity Contest" does it's mirror image chorus to "Personality Crisis." Like another rip-roaring rock and roll joy-ride, The Darkness, W.H.O. are all about the giddy fun of rocking balls out. If there is an agenda here, it's (non)-hidden in song titles like "Lick The Pole," "Ride The Snake" and "3 In Bed."
This would all dissolve into Spinal Tap parody if the band weren't so loud and proud. There isn't a single cheesy corporate ballad here mugging for the attention of sleepy-eared radio programmers. This is aimed squarely at the folks who think, as the lyric to "Permanent Juvenile" states, "rock and roll's about long hair and getting high....till you're really f-n' up your life!" We aren't booking on the intellectual quotient here, folks. If there was ever a time in your life that you believed in that statement (or if you still do), then the debut of White Hot Odyssey is for you. And if it isn't, they have come for your children with a Flying-V classic rock guitar lodged between their marshall amped legs.......
OMFG STFU!.......2005-02-10
I was introduced to White Hot Odyssey at their first show, when they opened for the Cherry Poppin' Daddies (go figure) at the McDonald Theatre in Eugene, OR. Since then I've seen them a total of four times live, and each time I get more and more excited. I've never been more excited for a show than when I see WHOdyssey. But that's beside the point.
This album is MIND BLOWING. Albeit, a little dirty, and not really for young ears. (Hopefully you could tell that by the titles of the songs). Steve Perry does it again, his voice is beyond incredible. And the guitar work, everything is astounding. If you're a Cherry Poppin' Daddies fan, or a glam rock fan, or... A ANYTHING fan, you must have this album.
Buy it now, your life will never be complete without it.
I'm not kidding.
I wanna "Ride the Snake!".......2005-01-18
White Hot Odyssey ROCKS!
Being a fan of Steve Perry and Jason Moss from their Cherry Poppin Daddies days, I had high expectations. This cd exceeded them. I'm talking about, bouncing up and down, uncontrollable smiling and screaming like a silly school girl, its THAT good.
Steve is a genius when it comes to writing music...he's outdone himself this time...its incredible, and I can't recommend it enough.
None more rocking.......2004-12-31
Whoooooooooooo!!!!
Instructions for listening to GWO: Disengage higher brain functions, consume artifical stimulant(s) of your choice to excess, plan over-the-top evening of licentious debauchery, crank to 11, bang head against wall. Repeat.
Enjoy!!
White Hot Wow.......2004-12-01
I loved the Cherry Poppin' Daddies, and it seems as thought Steve has done it again. Sure fire. Dirty funk, catchy tunes....I loved it. And just for the record, Ride The Snake is my favourite. I'd definately recommend this to anyone who is a fan of The Daddies, or bands like The Darkness. White Hot Odessey is great, and I'm very glad I invested in it!

When a unique sound is pulled off.......2004-03-18
Just like the other reviewers, I was turned off when I listend to Rocket. Obviously because I was expecting a "Standing Outside..." sound to the album. However, I don't know how much time had passed, but after a very long while of not listening to that album, I picked it up again. I never realized I had a daimond in the rough the whole time.
But on to this album, "White Hot Peach", it was a different case. Yes it is fairly different than Rocket. But in no way should that be taken as a negative fact. Chris O'Connor has a voice that hums with a unique smoothness in the more mellow of the songs (Ghost of a Chance), and he keeps a very non-monotone feel to the album while he's at it. The biggest difference between this album and Rocket is that it didn't take me a long time to realize that this is a daimond that holds more beauty than roughness.
A lost album that could've done great.......2003-10-07
This album is fantastic, a major leap over their first one. Instead of just throwing sound effects to make the songs, they actually create songs with great melodies and chord progessions and then add any sound effects they need to their advantage. "Message From Steven" is a dreamy/distorted opener, short and sweet. "Ghost of a Chance" almost seems like something you'd hear on a soft rock station-very laid back with clever lyrical references to several jazz musicians. "Gotta Know Now" is the best song on the cd - The shimmering guitar and drums fit right in and the smart lyrics that ramble on are just plain great. "Blood From a Beating Heart" and "Fading Out" or two more great spacy acoustic songs, definate highlights. "Devil's Triangle" is the only agressive number, and agressive it is. A grungy guitar riff along with guitars in the background squealing like sirens and the singer uses a very odd voice distorter. "First Alein Photo" is another spacy acoustic song and is one of the more unique tracks on the record. A simple acoustic guitar part with ufo sounds fluttering here and there and lyrics from an alien's point of view about visiting earth. "Wayward Pilot's mission" and the laid-back "Motor of Joy" are two more great songs. "Skin Turns Blue" is another acoustic song with nothing really special about it and the melody seems bland and boring. Not a bad song but not something I listen to because all the other songs kick ass. "Whatever Wakes McCool" is a 6 1/2 minute space rocker of different sound effects with ambient noise behind it and short guitar parts here and there. A nice ending to the album, although I wish that there was more actual music going on during the song. All in all, a great lost cd that will never see the light of day. Several songs could easily make great radio tunes, but greedy corporate executives don't wanna take chances on bands like these so we hear the same boring heavy 4-chord progession crap behind a guy that tries to imitate scott stapp, who has a bad voice himself.
just not as good as the first one.......2002-07-13
It's OK. Just not as good as the first album.
worthy of your attention.......2001-07-25
This album was more of an impulse buy, but after listening to it, I am extremely glad that I did make the purchase. The things that impressed me most about this album are as follows:
1. The musical catches in each song are obviously very inspired and will most likely have you humming along after a listen or two. The best songs (IMHO) are "Fading Out" and "Blood From a Beating Heart." If you can find these on the internet somewhere, maybe they will convince you to purchace this album
2. The lyrics in the songs on this album (very much similar to their previous album) are just simply amazing. The songs are almost poetic in nature and are very open to interpretations. Pimative Radio Gods are a very underappreciated group and defenetly deserver your attention. Those of you that like counting crows, blur, the smashing pumpkins, or dave matthews will most likley appreciate this album as well.
Pink Floyd for the 3rd Millennium.......2001-02-28
Apparently this release got held up by a variety of music industry shenanigans, but it was well worth the wait. The record overall features a mellow blend of electronic effects, samples, and acoustic sounds - at times reminiscent of Pink Floyd's _Dark Side of the Moon_ - with "Devil's Triangle" thrown in as a grungy counterpoint. I particularly liked "Ghost of a Chance" with its recycled Jazz lyrics.

Crack the Window Baby! this album is HOT!.......1999-06-12
I had the pleasure of seeing Tony Joe White when he performed in Perth, Australia, April 1999. He just gets better and better. This album is a treat. "Crack The Window Baby" is a song anyone can identify with who lives in a hot climate or a hot bedroom. My favorite is "Cold Fingers" and the song which could become one's motto: "Don't Over Do It". Tony is a rare talent, if you can't see him live, this album is close to the truth and can really take you down rockin!
One Hot July is One Of Tony Joe's Best.......1999-04-12
I've had this Cd for almost a month now and can't stop playing it. Gumbo John , I Want My Fleetwood Back and The Delta Singer are classic Tony Joe. If Tony Joe was anymore lay back on the title track One Hot July he would be asleep. To anyone who is a fan of Tony Joe White this is a must.
best he's ever done! an american treasure!!.......1999-03-22
it's really sad so little is known about this unique, one of a kind, truly natural talent. bring him back!
sesational.......1999-03-21
The 58 year old comback kid Tony Joe White has done it again. The Louisiana swamps ooze out of every note. Recorded last year in Louisiana TJW has assembled a great back up group with help from daughter Michelle on Old Black Crow real southern funk. Great keyboards throughout adds to the atmosphere. Across from Midnight is quite different to the Cocker version. Also worth a mention is I want my fleetwood back, Gumbo John with his pet alligator Clyde. We all look forward to see him tour Australia again next month it is a special experience. There is a song The Delta Singer with lyrics about blues notes on the Australian wind. great stuff! buy it!

AWSOME!!!.......2002-11-21
This is a VERY!!! good album for people that are fans of Hard Rock to Jazz. My favorite was Red Candles, it's a jazz/contemporary song, and it's BEAUTIFUL... The second favorite of mine is Message from the edge of nowhere. Good band. A good one for people that like mellow, pretty tunes. BUY IT! BUY IT NOW!
diamond in the rough.......2000-02-04
I love this band. They mix great lyrics with a very unique sound. Imagine Prince, Queen, Jimi Hendrix and Ben Harper got together in a recording studio and let go. The haunting lyrics of "Chains around my Heart" and "Message from the Edge" are balanced by the sounds of "Sleep Tonight" and "I Hate Myself" that just sound so good. I also recommend checking out "Soul's Got Wings" and "I Hung on Til High Noon" which can be found on the first CD entitled "Get the Silver". The whole CD is good so it a sure thing. If you are going to take a chance on some new music, pick these guys. I have seen them perform live and their show is awesome. I highly recommend checking them out if they come to your city.
An incredibly refreshing hard rock album........1999-10-16
If you take the essence of 70's bands like Lep Zep and Queen and mix in the nastiness of The Cult, you've got MADFLY. Great songs, superb musicianship, truly the most unappreciated band from the Little Five in GA.
