These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

Standard Transcription Collection.......2003-04-12

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

Mostly valuable for what's not duplicated.......2006-09-21

Once he departed for Europe, Bernstein rarely recorded again in the U.S. These recordings demonstrate his loyalty to the Israel Phil., with whom he duplicated many things he had already recorded in New York. This set is equally a testimonry to his love affair with the Vienna Phil, which sounds a little out of touch in American music. The original recordings from NY on Sony surpass the remakes in vigor and freshness. Even so, it's nice to get the Kaddish Sym. with revised narration, and to hear Gidon Kremer in the Serenade for violin and orchestra.

This 7-disc set also includes later Bernstein compositions that never appeared on Sony, in particular Songest and Jubilee Games. But the singers aren't particularly good in the former recording and the piece isn't very good in the latter. All in all, I think only a Bernstein completist would seek out this collection. Better to stick with the wonderful recordings originally made in New York in Bernstein's heyday.

Excellent western honky-tonk!.......2000-10-06

You can hear a lot of these songs at MP3.com. I'm really impressed with this band: very solid Bakersfield Sound chops lead by a female vocalist who might be giving Loretta and Patsy a run for their money. If "Close Down the Honky Tonks" doesn't give you a little shiver, check your pulse - you might not be alive. I'm looking forward to big things from West Coast Pinups.

Really kickin'.......2007-01-26

I live in Austin where these guys are and I fixed the bass players tv one day and his wife gave me this cd.

I'd never heard of them before, but I was really impressed. I never really listened to honky tonk before, but I'm hooked on it now.

The only thing that I think could be better would be a male singer. The singer is really good, I just think the music fits a male voice better.

Other than that, every song is different and great.

I have been looking for a stonking track I heard a while ago for about 3 years now. At last it's mine! of course it's La Turnaround by the West Coast Pinups, a Wanda Jacksonesque, belting slice of rock n' soul that defies/defines its era. You'll have to listen to the rest of the album yourselves, I'm too afraid I'll be disappointed!

Very good for learing English Country Dance.......2002-04-22

I have been using this CD for several years to teach English Country Dance, and it is without a doubt the most played in my collection. So many other compilations have just a taste of the melody, maybe enough for one verse, or the tempos are wrong. On this CD, everything is just right. The tempos are lively, yet easy to follow. Each piece has the correct number of repetitions to complete the dance. I particularly like that the dances are arranged by the number of couples. Especially good for performances, where a 2-couple set can move seamlessly from Rufty Tufty to Hearts Ease to Argeers without skipping a beat.

An excellent collection of First Edition Playford dances........2000-06-16

This album is a must-have for any fan of English Country Dances. Every dance on the disc comes from John Playford's influential 1651 edition of the "English Dancing Master", and almost every track is perfectly dancable (I know this from personal experience). The tunes are accurate to the original, the tempos are just right to dance to, and the arrangements are interesting and different from track to track. If you want to listen to what people were dancing to 350 years ago, buy this disc.

Tod Howarth proves he is a diverse singer and musician on his latest CD "West of Eight." The former Ace Frehley frontman offers songs that are crunchy, melodic, and just plain rock. If you were a fan of Ace Frehley and his solo band, "Frehley's Comet," you owe it to yourself to pick up a copy of this CD. You will not be disappointed.

Tod Times 3.......2000-08-18

This is a great self-produced CD. Tod does everything on the CD. He is one great rocker and person. The CD is hard edged and grungier than his first two solo CDs (not a "Happy CD" as he puts it). Tod H. put a lot of work into this and it shows. Any fan of KISS, Ace Frehley, STARZ, Angel, or any rock band will be pleased. The sound is first rate, clean, crisp, and professional. This will blow your socks off.
