5 out of 5 stars I usually don't like greatest hits albums but..........2007-01-02

this one takes the cake. Most greatest hits albums are hastily thrown together grab bags of a bands most famous songs. But this one, it really gets ya. I don't know what it is but every time I here tender love i think back to 1990 when me and my friends sat on the porch of my friend A's house, snapping our fingers and trying to be the FMDs so we could get the girls (lol). Love is a House is also very nostalgic... That song embodies what I think of when I think back to the good ole days in NYC. It is upbeat with a great tempo and the vocals go without saying. It is also a timeless story that we have all been through before, unfortunately. The track with the fat boys is another all time classic that will get any party jumpin. All in all, it is a great buy. A lot of people compare them to Full Force, Jammin' TA, or New Edition but once you really listen to the FMDs you'll appreciate how different and ahead of their time they were. Sadly, the story of the FMDs is another story of genius and talent that left us far too early.

5 out of 5 stars Legends...........2005-01-02

In this day and age when every "R&B" song has to have a rapper an hip-hop DJ to make a 'track,' this what music was all about. Too bad people don't make it like this anymore. Those who try don't get heard unless they pay the urban radio station monopolies cash to put them on their p(l)ay lists.

The Force MD's goes way back. Many people think they got their start as singers, but they were also a part of the first hip-hop rappers when they were known as the Force MC's. So they go back.

I am just waiting for the return of the day when ANY R&B singer can come out with their vision and play actual instruments. I hope I won't be 50 when that happens!

5 out of 5 stars These Guys Could Sing For Real.......2004-12-11

I knew I had to buy this CD. I was 20 when Force MDs came on the scene in '84, and their music was the soundtrack of my young adulthood. Listening to their beautiful voices remind me how much I detest post 1990 music. This CD is a must for anyone who wants to hear what great harmonies sounded like back in the '80s.

5 out of 5 stars Fall in love all over again.......2003-12-30

Don't sleep on this CD or this group. I recently saw the Force MD's in Columbus, OH and they reminded me what true R&B really is. I was literally brought to tears. I was an adolescent when they first came out, but I'm grateful I had the opportunity to enjoy them as an adult. The passion these artists have for their craft comes through beautifully in their voices. Their place in the music industry cannot be denied. Current artists could learn a few things from this group. Thank you for blessing us with your music.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad for what it's worth.......2002-09-18

Not a bad overview. The Force MD's, whom I've seen perform twice in the 80s, became a minor success at the time because they were one of the few groups (along with their friends the New Edition) doing vocal harmony during the dismal days when synthesized histrionics ruined R&B music for a long time. This has most of the good stuff, like "Tears," "Tender Love," "Love Is A House" and the pseudo hip hop "Auld Lang Syne" and "Itchin For a Scratch." Sadly, R&B music was not as well promoted as it is now, so even good acts like the Force MD's got lost amidst the junk. But check out this CD to learn more about the few bright lights from the dark ages of Black music.

The final album Steeleye Span made before their initial breakup finds their lineup in serious transition--the great folk guitarist Martin Carthy had returned to the band after six years away, but several longstanding members had left, and punk and disco had become their Scylla and Charybdis. Consequently, Storm Force Ten is their most experimental album, centered on a pair of long tracks that go rather far afield from the British folk tradition: a strangely glossy cover of the Brecht/Weill classic "The Black Freighter" (from The Threepenny Opera), and "The Victory," a multi-part song about Lord Nelson with a gorgeously harmonized chorus and an L.A.-inflected arrangement. --Douglas Wolk

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Quintessential "Classic" Steeleye Span..........2007-05-02

Steeleye Span pioneered folk rock along with Fairport convention (whose music I still haven't picked up yet, though I've been meaning to for variety's sake). If you're a Steeleye Span fan, you will like this CD. Period. It's a Steeleye classic, and one of my many favorites.

Skip the newer releases, like: They Called Her Babylon, Bedlam Born, Bloody Men.

Go for the Classics: Tempted and Tried, All Around my Hat, Sails of Silver, Storm Force Ten, Rocket Cottage, Hark! The Village Wait, Please to See the King, Ten Man Mop, Commoners Crown, Now We Are Six, Parcel of Rogues, Below the Salt, Back in Line.

If you must pick up "modern" Steelye albums, pick up: Time (one of their best "modern" releases) and Horkstow Grange (their other good "modern" release). "Winter" is supposed to also be good, on par with the classics (traditional arrangements of holiday songs), though I haven't yet seen it.

The above "classic" albums cover the early and middle years.

4 out of 5 stars It Isn't Steeleye Span, But I Like It!.......2006-05-30

It's okay. It's kind of like when Jehtro Tull started out bluesy. I'm no too much of a blues fan, but Tull is so talented, they make it sound good. It is the same with Steeleye Span. They kind of went into this weird faze with Storm Force, but they snapped out of it. I hate the mellotrons. But basically it is a very relaxing album, not many of the songs will make you really want to dance. One song makes you feel like you're at the carnival. A new member, John Kirkpatrick, plays the accordion. I don't really like the accordion, I would prefer Pete's violin to John's squeeze box.

4 out of 5 stars mostly great.......2003-11-26

Other than "sweep," which is a bit too trad-stiff and hymn-like, I find this album quite wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant return to form.......2003-11-25

After the commercial failure of "Rocket Cottage", Steeleye Span regrouped seriously for the first time in their history, rerecruiting Martin Carthy and adding accordionist John Kirkpatrick for "Storm Force Ten".

Though this might have seemed a fatal mistake, in fact "Storm Fore Ten" was a surprising return artistic form, with Kirkpatrick's accordion adding a touch that had not been seen beforehand, notable at the end of the beautiful, complex Bertolt Brecht tale "Wife Of The Soldier", which Maddy, John and Martin turn into exemplary folk-rock. The next song, the epic "The Victory" was an amazingly enchanting epic of ever changing mood that yet managed not to repeat the same line in its eight minutes. The alternating lines of fuzzed-out rock and mystical folk - and everything in between - enchant in a way Steeleye had not done since "Sheep Crook and Black Dog."

The album's other Bertolt Brecht piece, "The Black Freighter," featured even more prominent accordion work and a tearfully slow chorus that actually fitted the mood of the faster sections of the song. Maddy's amazing voice here has more range and clarity than one might even suspect from previous Steeleye works. Martin Carthy's melodic solo reminds one of the things Tom Verlaine was praised lavishly for at the time of "Storm Force Ten"'s release.

After those two amazing epics, the simple "Some Rival" sounded like a return to earth, but Maddy's melodic and pure voice cannot let the song down. The a capella "Sweep, Chimney Sweep" showed that Steeleye's voices had developed on a par with the band's ability to produce original and challenging interpretations of traditional folk songs, a point reaffirmed yet again by "Treadmill Song" with its quasi-danceable beat and vocal inflections.

The closer "Seventeen Come Sunday" showed how well the accordion fitted into traditional folk songs, and the joyful voices sounded utterly quirky, and by no means serious. John's accordion produced a long yet brilliant melody that recalls the band's best years when it interplays with the fiery guitar at the end of the song.

Though overlooked for many years by both listeners and critics, "Storm Force Ten" is a blend of classic folk-rock and unconventional song structures that sounds like nothing you will ever hear. Though sounding more modern than "Hark! The Village Wait" or "Below The Salt", it was the first time since then that the band was really on form - and at their best Steeleye has few rivals in the 1970s.

4 out of 5 stars Unusual Steeleye and very good........2003-05-04

One of Steeleye's most uncharacteristic albums due to the use of accordion, and the rendition of a relatively modern non-British song (The Black Freighter, a redo of Brecht's Pirate Jenny). Pretty good stuff, though, by any measure. One of their lost treasures.

Speedy service. Mint condition. The music takes you back. Love, it, love it, love it.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular.......2000-09-26

These are the Originals before New Edition, and BoyzIIMen the Force MD's were the first to combine doo wop and hip hop. This is one of the best greatest hits collections around. It would have been better if "Forgive Me Girl", "Let Me Love You", and "Itchin for a scratch was included. I remember they opened for Madonna in 1989. I remember these guys headlining with New Edition and sharing the bill with rappers in the 80's,and for all the die hard fans look for a new cd in early October 2000.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely for lovers and others!.......2000-07-21

It doesn't get much better than this! Force MD's led the old skool tracks in the love department, and to make a cd with the most high quality love jams of my time just made my day. My cd collection, though rather extensive, was incomplete until the UPS truck arrived with this one today... very satisfied!

5 out of 5 stars Ballads Don't Get Better.......2000-04-29

Ballads just don't get better than "Tears", "Couldn't Care Less", and "Tender Love". Hearing this album makes you wonder why Force MD's didn't stick around longer than they did. Although I think it would have been fun to include "One Plus One" and "Forgive Me Girl" here, this is all about the slow jams. The only wrong step was including the remake of "I Wanna Know Your Name"; there's no improvement to the song itself, and the ending monologue is particularly cringe-worthy. Still, "For Lovers and Others" really makes a case for the understated brilliance of the Force MD's. (I'd love to see them on VH1's "Where Are They Now", wouldn't you?)

4 out of 5 stars solid disc.......2000-01-26

this group was interesting in that they were rappers&singers but for me they were far better singers.Love is a house was my jam.tender Love was cool but it's been played to death.still overall this is a solid disc.the vocals&the music still sound good.

5 out of 5 stars The Harmony Lives on!.......2006-12-15

This Cd continues the legacy of the Force M.D.'s. The smooth harmony over updated tracks on this Cd showed that they still had it without sounding like thier time had passed them by. For the serious Force M.D. fans T.C.D. did complete 1 song before he passed away, but i don't think Mercury was on any of them. Jessie & Trisco do awsome with thier leads & make this album rank up there with thier very best!

5 out of 5 stars This album definately continues the legacy.......2001-10-29

I was very impressed with this album. THe Force Md's have been around for a long time. However, they have had some hard times and I was not sure if they could still make music the way they used to. Surprisingly enough, this album is in line with all of the others. I suggest that anyone who loves R&B purchase this album. It is worth every penny.
