In commemoration of Queen Week on American Idol (April 11 and 12, 2006), Hollywood Records is releasing Stone Cold Classics. The disc features 12 original studio hits featuring Freddie Mercury--including "Bohemian Rhapsody," "We Will Rock You," "We Are the Champions," "Another One Bites the Dust," and "Crazy Little Thing Called Love"--plus two live bonus tracks with Paul Rodgers from Return of the Champions: "All Right Now" and "Feel Like Makin' Love."

3 out of 5 stars Stone Cold GET OVER IT!.......2006-07-19

I almost didn't get a chance to write this review. I was too busy laughing.

Laughing at what, you ask? At the silliness of the violently negative reviews over this album.

I will grant you that this compilation seems to be lacking in a few important songs (most especially "You're My Best Friend" and possibly "Somebody to Love"...I'm sorry, "39" is one of my all-time favorites and even I cannot get behind the complaint of it's exclusion here). I will grant you that the addition of two Paul Rodgers songs seems a bit dubious - I don't see his face on the cover. He's not a member of Queen. If that was going to happen, why the absence of the "+ Paul Rodgers" in the title of the album? Is this the band's way of getting us used to the notion of him possibly becoming a full-fledged band member? Who cares? (He's a means to an end, folks, and that end is getting our guys back on the road and maybe getting some new Brian and Roger music...and THAT I wanna hear!)

What I care about is the fact that the band's music is reaching new audiences. I was appalled at the Queen episode of Idol...what a joke, expecting these kids (some if not most of whom obviously had no idea what they were doing) to put these songs across in manner worthy of the band. However, the main objective as I saw it was marketing. I don't know how many young Americans got turned on to Queen after that show, but I hope plenty did. Queen needs some more recognition in this country!

So I have absolutely no problem with this album, its songs (hi, it's not a greatest hits compilation so calm down, everyone) or the purpose behind its release. Will I purchase it? Why should I? I already have all those songs on multiple cds. But it wouldn't be such a bad starter for the youngsters who may have been intrigued enough after Idol to hear more. And that's a great thing! Let's keep Queen going strong!

Oh, and one question: How many of these repackaged bands feature clips of their deceased or otherwise absent band members during their present-day concerts? How many of them would rather forget those ex-members? That's the folly of those bands, but not of Queen. They're not forgetting who they are or selling out. They're moving on under the Queen banner and giving fans, myself included, what they've craved for far too long: To see and hear their heroes once again. So let's maintain our focus, shall we?

5 out of 5 stars Origonaly I bought it because of American Idol.......2006-06-27

At first, I just wanted to hear the songs they sang on idol, but I soon got hooked, and know The CD is never to far from me. Everyone needs tihs!

2 out of 5 stars Queen wasn't on American Idol.......2006-05-27

< RANT ON > The lead singer of Bad Company, Paul Rodgers, along with the guitarist and drummer from Queen, played on American Idol. They can use the name 'Queen' all they want, I'm not impressed with the dishonesty that is taken for granted these days, like bands using the names of Styx, Little River Band, The Doors, ELO, you name it, in order to get the needed funding for tours and new records and promotion and stuff. At least Paul McCartney doesn't go touring with some bunch of musicians he pretends are 'The Beatles'. < RANT OFF > In terms of how well this represents some angle of Queen - they DID pick a lot of of Queen's best, but I think really pointless omissions were made. Leaving out songs like 'Keep Yourself Alive' (especially in a rock-oriented set of songs), 'Killer Queen', 'Somebody to Love' to me is like leaving Hey Jude and Sgt Pepper off a Beatles compilation. Thing is, they didn't get many tracks (just 13, and TWO OF THEM ARE NOT EVEN QUEEN SONGS!) This is just a marketing tie-in to 'The New Queen' that should be sold at McDonalds. But that's business for you. And if you really like these songs, hey, get the CD.

4 out of 5 stars calm down.......2006-05-05

Looks to me as if this release is a collection of songs that they are doing on the Queen / Paul Rogers tour. And it is for people that are only into hearing Freddies versions as they should be. The list price is very low and just looks to be a corresponding release with the new live cd. So people should calm down. Of course there are many songs that should be on here, but i doubt that they are doing most of them live anyway.... If people notice, the list price on all of Queens early releases is still rather high, this is a souvenier. if you dont want it, dont buy it.

3 out of 5 stars A decent 1-disc collection.......2006-04-20

This isn't too bad for a single-CD collection. Thankfully they realized that they don't necessarily have to include some of the sillier hit singles (like "Body Language" and "Flash"), and instead opted for FM album-oriented radio hits like "Tie Your Mother Down" and "Stone Cold Crazy" (the latter one of Metallica's influences). Those two songs give this CD more of Queen's rock feel which made the band famous, rather than too much later '80s pop. And there's a good balance between the '70s and '80s songs, showing Queen's diverse musical style. Though I can live without "You're My Best Friend" (and if you really want it you should get the actual classic album, "A Night At The Opera", which it came from), the strange omission of "Somebody To Love" is what I dropped one star for. That song was even performed on American Idol which this limited-edition disc was supposed to be tied into. Then I realized that not only did they also omit "Killer Queen", but the CD doesn't even seem full so it wasn't due to lack of space...there went the other star. But overall I still wouldn't mind giving this disc to friends as a good introduction to Queen.

But for the best Queen compilation, many fans seem to agree on buying "Greatest Hits" (with the pink CD cover) along with "Classic Queen" (with the blue cover) which were released together as companion CDs in the early '90s. (Those two discs also have a slightly better song selection than the similar 2-disc "Greatest Hits 1 & 2" and similar 3-disc "Platinum Collection".) The single-disc limited "We Will Rock You" edition of "Greatest Hits" from a couple years ago (a black cover with a picture of the four band members on the front) is probably the 2nd best overall collection.

5 out of 5 stars the best metal in the world.......2003-10-28

put this cd into your stereos and crank it all the way up so you can experience these songs like the way there meant to be heard and if you like the texas rattlesnake and metal then you wanna buy this album and thats the bottom lin cause stone cold said so

4 out of 5 stars surprisingly great!.......2001-11-12

I got this CD when it first came out. I bought it more so cause I saw "metal" and "Stone Cold Steve Austin", and since Im a fan of both, I figured it'd be good. first, I read the liner notes, and when I saw it was mostly 80s bands, I kinda freaked out, since I dont really listen to that stuff much. put it in the stereo, and man, was I blown away! these songs rocked old-school style! you feel like throwing your hands in the air while making the funny little devil symbol. Ted Nugent's song kinda drags on since it is about 7 minutes, but then again some Tool songs are that long. anyway, it still rules. the KISS songs are heavy in a fun kind of way. The Cult's contribution is also cool, as are the ones from Foghat, Accept, and Def Leppard.

I gave this 4 stars because I dont really know the classic rock genre that well, and a few songs sounded the same, and there are 1 or 2 you will probably not want to hear. but all in all, if you want to see what rock was like before grunge started its chronic complaining, and the rap-metal hybrid was unleashed, get this cd. I did.

5 out of 5 stars Stone Cold Metal Review.......2000-04-01

I kinda like this CD, some songs I've heard and some I haven't, it's a really cool mix. My favorites are "Rock You Like A Hurricane", "God Of Thunder", "Balls To The Wall", "Perfect Stragers", "Detroit Rock City", "No One Like You", and "Slow Ride". The others are pretty cool too. Great CD!

5 out of 5 stars Oh Hell Yeah!.......1999-12-30

One of the best albums of the nineties. Its divers, funky, and it really makes me want to get up and shake my money maker. Everytime I hear it, which is everyday, all day; I want to stun someone when they run at me. Oh yeah I also want to waste a good beer by pouring it down my sexy pot belly. This album, beleve it or not is even better than Stone Cold Country, which I thought was one of the best albums of all time. I hope this review will help you in your decision about the album. Austin 3:16 says you better buy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars THIS CD ROCKS!.......1999-12-06

This is a really great cd for any Stone Cold or metal music fan. All the songs rock, especially track numbers 2, 4, 10, and 14. This cd is simply awesome !

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Boring............2006-11-12

With all this talent, this album could/should have been a lot better.

"Stone Cold Crazy" and "Play the Game" are just too close to the originals, only the originals were better. "Fat Bottom Girls" isn't bad, but I think Antigone Rising do a better version. "somebody to Love" one of my personal favs, is laughable. And speaking of laughable, why am I listening to the Nelson Bros.sing "Crazy Little Thing Called Love?"

"Fight from the Inside" is the only song that really kicks it right. A very good version here w/ Tonys Levin and Thompson as a rythym section. Jason Scheff singing "Your'e My Best Friend" is awesome too. It's like he wrote tthe song. Kuddos!! "I'm in love with my Car" is no big deal and Glen Hughes' "Killer Queen" is back to laughable.

"Spread your Wings" and "We Will Rock You" almost end on a good note but all in all the album falls way short. Too bad too, because there's some really great players on this project.

2 out of 5 stars All-star line-up but Queen still Rocks!!.......2006-01-25

This disc has a very impressive line-up of great musicians including some of the greatest session players of all time (Steve Lukather, Tony Franklin, Tony Levin) but unfortunately it doesn't stack up against the original Queen recordings at all. In fact no one really gets anywhere near to nailing their track. You might find this disc interesting if you want to hear how some of your favourite musicians tackle some Queen classics but don't expect too much. Queen recordings are just too good to be compared to any other versions, no matter how talented the line-up.

3 out of 5 stars Well, it's better than "Dragon Attack".......2001-10-10

After dealing with various Queen tribute albums, one becomes rather weary when a new CD is released. Afterall, how many... Queen covers can a fan bear? Luckily "Stone Cold Queen" is an honest surprise. The album starts off with several dreary tracks. "Stone Cold Crazy" is no longer the frantic, thrashing metal song it was. Robin Zander's vocals are so out of place here as they're somewhat wimpy. The song is extended for no apparent reason other than to give Steve Stevens a freehand to widdle about on his guitar."Play the Game" is a poor sound-a-like to the original. Nothing remarkable about it."Fat Bottomed Girls" is straight from the wastebasket. Disappointing weak drumming from Brian May's former bandmate Eric Singer which is up to speed with the lifeless harmonies and arrangement.Perhaps the song I looked forward to the most was "Somebody To Love" as sung by Geoff Tate. I generally like Geoff's voice but here it just reminds you how poorly he compares to Freddie Mercury. Again the harmonizing is another huge let down however it makes you appreciate Queen's skills that much more.Rounding out the poor first half of the album is "Crazy Little Thing Called Love". Sung by the Nelson brothers (yes, the guys with the long, pretty blond hair) lacks all of the fun and flair of the original. The snappy bassline which was so danceable in the original is mixed so low in the cover that it's barely noticable.A ripping "Fight From the Inside" finds the perfect vocalist in Jack Blades. The roughness of his voice matches well with the pointed lyrics. The guitar work of Jake E. Lee is sharp and vicious. A good start to the album's second half.Kip Winger is an easily forgettable icon of the 80's but on "I'm In Love With My Car" he is resurrected as he glides along Roger Taylor's lyrics. The riffs from Steve Lukather's guitar soars. Roger should be happy with these two versions of his songs. An unfortunate cover of "Killer Queen" sees Glenn Hughes doing his best impression of what a drag queen sounds like singing. His whispered vocals are laughably bad.Jack Russell and the Kulick boys decided (thankfully) to do the fast version of "We Will Rock You" which roars through your speakers. Fast, fun and rocking.I'll skip past "You're My Best Friend" since I cannot stand the song, period. Finally, the best cover is "Spread Your Wings" which brings about a certain sadness from the song, the likes of which I have not felt since hearing Queen's version on the "Live Killers" album. Tommy Shaw somehow tackles the feelings with quiet desperation, slowly painting a mental picture of a man who dreams of something more. The Beatles-like ending is a nice, warm touch.Though there are several awful covers here, the few top tracks truly save the CD and when it comes to tribute albums, that's saying a lot.

    Album Description

For the past 25 years, Polansky has been composing a series of fascinating mensuration canons (a formal concept dating back to the Renaissance) that run the sonic gamut from wildly boisterous to serenely introverted. This disc collects thriteen of these canons (one of which is found here in three different realizations). The varied instrumentation includes marimbas, gamelan, electric guitars, children's voices, computer, choir, and chamber ensemble. Performances by and collaborations with William Winant, Jody Diamond, Daniel Goode, the York Vocal Index, Ray Guillette, Nathan Davis, Nick Didkovsky, and others.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars mostly great.......2003-08-28

This wonderful CD consists entirely of mensuration canons. "Each successively entering voice moves proportionally faster than the previous one, causing each canon's density and rhythmic complexity to increase from beginning to end." There are only a few tracks that I just don't grab me, otherwise this gets a five star rating. Particularly good is Guitar Canon, performed by Polansky on his fretless guitar, and the amazingly cute Anna Canon, based on samples of his third year old daughter's voice. CD features: William Winant, Jody Diamond, Daniel Goode, Nick Didkovsky...
