The Best Of Gilbert And Sullivan.......2004-03-15
At the end of the 19th century (1870's, 80's and 90's) the compatible duo of librettist and composer Gilbert and Sullivan popularized the pre-Broadway entertainment of Savoy opera. These were light operas or operettas whose content was satire and comedy, full of bouncy melodies and beautiful singing, highly entertaining theatrical works staged at London's Savoy theatre. Gilbert and Sullivan did not always get along and in fact there was a time when they ended their professional relationship because personal conflicts surfaced. But they managed to create the world's most beloved light operas, over 40 of them. Their most famous are what I call the Big Three- The H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates Of Penzance and The Mikado. Other works include their first hit Trial By Jury, The Yeomen Of The Guard, Princess Ida, The Gondoliers, Patience and several others. A standard signature of Gilbert and Sullivan was in the colorful cast- a comic actor with a special kind of baritone voice, a canary-like and sweet-voiced coloratura or lyric diva, a mezzo soprano with strong chest register and a lyric tenor as the romantic hero. On this album, English conductor Sir Charles Mackerras, a popular figure in the classical music scene and opera, guides the Chorus and Orchestra Of the Welsh National Opera in generally well-delivered performances of excerpts from the operas The Mikado, The H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates Of Penzance, Yeomen Of The Guard and Trial By Jury. Although I feel that the recordings made by the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, with Isodore Godfrey conducting and starring the best cast of the Gilbert and Sullivan repertoire- the singers of the 60's and 70's- tenor Phillip Potter, soprano Valerie Masterson, baritone John Reed, Donald Adams and mezzo soprano Christine Palmer. Their version of the Pirates Of Penzance and the Mikado far outshine the Welsh National Opera in technical mastery and vibrant tone color.
But these are fine excerpts. Especially appealing is the famous and cheerful "Three Little Maids From School Are We", a trio that imitates Japanese style melody. Most of the Mikado does this, for it was inspired by Japanisme or the new fashion in Victorian England- everything Japanese, from prints to paintings to poetry. Gilbert and Sullivan simply "Japanized" their English operettas. The Finale "For He's Gone To Marry Yum Yum" is an ebullient and pleasant finale. Not featured here is the domineering and powerful Katisha, a figure who stands out in the Mikado.
The H.M.S. Pinafore is Gilbert and Sullivan's most popular work. The sea chanty "We Sail The Ocean Blue" opens the opera with appropriate atmosphere and it seems to fit perfectly with the other scene in which the Captain greets his crew and they sing his praises "My Gallant Crew..I am the Captain Of The Pinafore". A beautiful melody that seems to come out of a romantic Offenbach tune is "I"m Called Little Buttercup". The finale, not featured here, is also very engaging "For He Is An Englishman" which can almost resemble a British national anthem. The Yeomen Of The Guard was Gilbert and Sullivan's "serious opera" eventhough it remains very Savoyard. The plot deals with Tudor England and takes place at the London Tower. "I have a song to sing" makes use of what can be taken for an English ballad of the Renaissance. Trial By Jury, about the eccentric and hilarious activity of a court trial, has a sextet that although different in composition, has the sextet "Che Mi Frena" from Donizetti's Lucia Di Lammermoor in mind. All in all, an excellent recording sure to delight young and old.
Pure delight.......2003-08-02
--Gilbert & Sullivan--
William Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan were a match made in heaven, yet on earth their pairing seems even with hindsight a most unlikely coupling. Both were destined for other things, Gilbert in fact for decidedly non-musical careers. Introduced by a mutual friend, Fred Clay, the fledgling lyricist Gilbert met the military-band-leader's son Sullivan and together continued to conspire to inspire the delights of audiences from high Victorian times down to the present, as their work in musical theatre comedy continues to provide merriment throughout the English-speaking world and beyond.
--The Music--
This collection includes highlights from five of the most popular Gilbert & Sullivan operettas: The Mikado, HMS Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, The Yeoman of the Guard, and Trial by Jury. The arrangements and orchestrations are delightfully energetic and clear; the characterisation and vocal qualities of the leads are perfect for their roles. The haughty if misplaced Lord of the Admiralty has the perfect combination of insecurity and pompous officiousness. The Plaintiff and the Defendant in the Trial are perfectly cast. This is a collection of highlights - at least three but no more than seven songs each, but this gives a good flavour of the music. The recordings on this collection come from complete performances by Mackerras and the WNO.
--Sir Charles Mackerras--
Mackerras is one of the geniuses of the twentieth century musical scene. Having a conducting career that includes the Hamburg Opera, the English National Opera (formerly Sadlers Wells Opera), and the Welsh National Opera (the performers for this piece), he has also conducted major orchestras on the continent of Europe and in the United States. The holder of many major awards and honourary doctorates, he has devoted much time and energy to the preservation and performance of eighteenth and nineteenth century music, as well the restoration of historical musical venues, such as the Estates Theatre in Prague, scene of the original production of Don Giovanni (Mackerras conducted the opera there to commemorate the bicentenary of the death of Mozart).
--Welsh National Opera Orchestra and Chorus--
The seeds of the WNO were planted in Cardiff during World War II by music lovers; the first performances occurred a year after the war's end, with Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci on the bill, with Faust the next night. Popular appeal was so great that the WNO was established, later adding choruses in both Cardiff and Swansea. The professional chorus was established in 1973, with a strength that matches the orchestra. They continue an ambitious performance schedule for recording and live events; Mackerras remains the Conductor Emeritus, as the WNO continues under the direction of Carlo Rizzi. The list of awards the WNO has won over the years is staggering - they are a world class institution by any measure.
--Other performers--
Notable singers such as Richard Stuart, Rebecca Evans, Felicity Palmer, John Mark Ainsley and Anne Howells lead the chorus with stunning vocals and clever characterisations of the parts they play. Many (such as Stuart and Evans) play the leading roles across several of the pieces of the disc.
--Liner Notes--
The liner notes give a good introduction and biographical information about Gilbert and Sullivan, as well as synopses of the five pieces presented here. It does not, unfortunately, include any information about Mackerras, the WNO Orchestra and Chorus, or the other special performers. It also does not include the lyrics to the songs. Were the quality of the CD not so great, this might cost it a star in rating.
--Overall Impressions--
I play this CD in my car, in my home and in my office frequently. It is a great sing-along work and a great comedic relief from the stresses of the day. The music is bubbly and clear; the recording quality is excellent and crisp. I recommend this to any Gilbert & Sullivan lover, any fan of musical comedy, opera and operettas, and anyone who delights in good music.
Delicious G&S samplings abound here........2003-05-06
The first thing I should be saying is "What an infectuous G&S CD." Indeed this is, with this fine sampling of the peppy and bright Mackerras series. I know I have praised its "Mercedes-Benz quality" elsewhere on these pages, but that doesn't stop me from saying that everyone is in fine voice. This generously filled CD may only focus on five operas, but at least you can savour a reasonable choice sampling of delights from each one. Of particular interest is Richard Suart's patter-baritone parts and the soaring lyric soprano of Rebecca Evans. The selection on this disc is filled with a mixture of familiar favourites and lesser-known gems such as the female choruses in Mikado and Pirates. Mackerras is a true G&S conductor, but one who always springs rhythms crisply, and adopts peppy tempo for the fast bits. The one drawback is that this selection is far too infectuous that you'll want to shell out money to buy the full 5-CD Mackerras cycle - an incredible bargain with most of the operas fitted onto one disc each. But still, this is at least a decent G&S sampling for beginners, capped with Steven Ledbetter's copious liner notes. It will leave you wanting to say "dammit I'm going to play it again."
Fine Intro to G&S.......2000-12-30
This is the perfect CD for those who may not be familiar with G&S, or for the initiated who want a smattering but don't have the mother of all CD changers. The difficulty with any G&S Greatest Hits CD is determining which pieces to leave off; while one could easily point to any number equally good bits, it would be difficult to argue about the quality of the choices included. The only problem, such as it is, is that after listening to it I am usually induced to go back and listen to the whole opera anyway. The Mackerras recordings are uniformly excellent. I have read elsewhere the criticism that they are too 'operatic' for light opera. If by this it is meant that the singers are too good, then I leave it to the discretion of the listener when the singing becomes too good to be enjoyable.

Painless and Pleasant.......2000-08-19
It's not that I hate opera, it's rather that I cannot handle and entire opera without nodding off. This 4 disc CD provides highlights from the most famous and recognizable arias, i.e., Pagliacci, Carmen, Rigoletto, Madame Butterfly, La Boheme, The Mikado, and H.M.S. Pinafore -- just to mention a few. I appreciate the ability to enjoy select arias from some of the most beautiful and and exceptional operas in the world, and played by first class orchestras, without having to sit through the entire opera.

Customer Reviews:
The Lee Boys - Sacred Steel rocks again!.......2006-09-01
Bottom line: These guys ROCK! And Say Yes! should be another fantastic addition to anyone's growing collection of Sacred Steel music. I was introduced to Sacred Steel with a chance listening of The Word a few years back (still one of my faves) and now have 7 or 8 Sacred Steel records and they never fail to disappoint - Say Yes! included. If you're like me, you'd buy this one for the stellar steel guitar work found on all Sacred Steel recordings - but then you'd stay for the complex rhythms (pay attention to the bass playing alone!) that chug with the intensity of a freight train on an out-of-control downhill run.
While the Lee Boys could be technically classified as 'gospel', they (mostly) convey their univeral spiritual message through music rather than words so it appeals to everyone, leaving the spiritual interpretation up to listeners like me. And I find that the sheer life-giving, life-affirming, positive energetic frenzied power of the Lee Boys (and the emotional depth of the more contemplative Amazing Grace - a Sacred Steel standard) makes this record worth having. And while one might also call this Christian Rock, I certainly view it as much more rock than Christian. As a lifelong fan of the Southern Rock of the Allman Brothers, Skynyrd, and now Derek Trucks, North Mississippi All-Stars and the Drive-by Truckers, this music slides comfortably right onto the Southern Rock train - so it's not surprising that the Lee Boys have performed on tour with all of the above. In fact, anyone nurtured on a seemingly long-faded, blues-rock tradition will find the music of the Lee Boys like a refreshing drink from a newly re-flowing well.
On the downside, 'Say Yes' doesn't add a lot to the overall Sacred Steel repertoire; several tracks are well-known 'standards' to those who have a growing collection of Sacred Steel records. One curious addition here is Happy and You Know It, that while cetainly not your kindergartner's version, nonetheless seems more curious to me than original. Also, the vocals on this one are a bit weaker than, for example, recordings by the Campbell Brothers, but I doubt if many folks pick up Sacred Steel recordings for the vocals anyway and the playing here does not disappoint. Overall, this record is an essential for all Sacred Steel fans and anyone who loves good time, feel good, upbeat, rock-n-roll played - you might say - solidly 'in the key of life'. Rock on Lee Boys and Rock on Sacred Steel!
Great Sacred Steel.......2005-10-17
These boys bring down the house. I saw them live in Seattle, and believe me their album does them justice. This genre of music is much like the Campbell brothers and Robbert Randolph. You won't be disappointed.
Lively, impassioned gospel music.......2005-03-31
When the Arhoolie Records label released the first "Sacred Steel" collection in 1997, they uncovered one of the few last untapped sources of regional music in America, an enclave of Southern churches built around an exhuberant musical style where the congregants sang ecstatically while a steel guitar wildly improvised, driving them all to greater heights. The album was a big success for Arhoolie and had since spawned several follow-up albums.
This latest entry in the "Sacred Steel" series features a six-piece family band from Florida pursuing the romping, stomping, exhuberant, ecstatic frenzy of the style. If you like the original "SACRED STEEL" collection, you'll definitely dig this disc as well.

Awesome Classic.......2004-02-11
I dont understand why someone would write a 500 word essay and totaly blast this cd in a negative way (see previous review). Obviously the guy is a ass*&^%. Awesome cd it's to bad I didnt discover it until 2001. If you like 80's metal youll love this cd!
Probably one of the best unknown metal albums ..........2002-02-20
... the guy who suggested that the internet arose from mankinds need to hear this album .... I can only concur :P
If there any justice in this world this album would have achieved the general aclaim of the likes of genre classics such as "van halen 1", "wheels of steel" (saxon), "pride" (white lion), etc and ... well you see the sort of thing I'm on about. Somehow though Q5 never made the breakthrough.
I can only imagine this is becuase they went soft AOR after this album - big mistake, they should have stuck to it then pimped thier back catalogue when the breakthrough came.
As a cautionary note I would add that there are a couple of weak songs and the shrill vocals wont to be to everyones taste (hence the 4 stars) but the overall musical style is very much in the early Van Halen/White Lion harder-end-of-glam-metal tradition with very tight hard rocking drums/bass/guitar throughout. Floyd Rose's guitar playing even holds up respectably in this sort company (although he isnt as good as Eddie or Vito). You can certianly see why he invented the locking tremelo ... he gives it some serious stick, but in a way that compliments his style and the music generally.
This is sort of cd that the '10 on your car stereo volume dial was designed for. ...
Fan from Turkey.......2001-09-21
One of the best heavy metal bands ever...
The inventor of the superb tremolo system Floyd Rose, himself plays the guitars.
(Although I mailed him, he did not answer :(
The sound and the power of the songs are nothing but one of the best in metal.
Although they had many ads in English metal mag Kerrang! in mid 80s they never bacame popular in Europe.
Buy this album and thank me forever.
The other album When The Mirror Cracks is much different from that one, but I think you'll love it too, especially if you are not in too deep with metal.
I consider myself as the Q5 ambassador to Turkey
Thank God for Amazon.com.......2001-04-10
I've been looking for this album forever. I originally recorded the title track off of "Finger's MetalShop" on a Sunday Night in the mid 80's. The scratchy tape of that song drove me crazy, and now I can listen to it as it was meant to be heard. I had tried to find the album in record stores all over Long Island, but to no avail. Eventually however, the need of people to listen to Q5 caused the creation of the INTERNET. Now - this album can be yours too.
This band desevers more then just 5 stars........2000-11-22
I am completely blown away by this. THis is like the metal I remember, and still prefer to listen too. Magnificant and wonderful. I just can't stop listening to the title track. It has such an awesome. almost spacerock feel to it. Wonderful metal band. ITs a must own for all true metalheads. Posers stay away you wouldn't apprecitate them.I just love this cd.Nothing comapares to stuff that sounds like this. Infact no words to really describe music like this only to say to others hear it for yourself. I promise you.It will be loved by all dedicated headbangers all over. The album art is just gorgeous. Enough said other then buy now.

"Slider" is Bruce Kaphan's solo debut album. Known for his pedal steel work with artists such as Sheryl Crow, REM, David Byrne, Chris Isaak, Jewel, The Black Crowes, Jellyfish and American Music Club, and for the underscore to Bob Dylan's feature film "Masked & Anonymous", "Slider" contains all original compositions and performances featuring the unique sound of Bruce Kaphan's pedal steel playing. Zen music... sweet dreams of light and flight in which Kaphans licks ring like prayer bells across an open Texas plain. Rolling Stone Magazine. An ambitious and groundbreaking effort... langorous, soulful expressivity. The San Francisco Bay Guardian. Kaphan pioneered new territory for the pedal steel in the90s with alt-rock cult faves American Music Club... where he quickly liberated the instrument from Nashville stereotypes. SLIDER is an extensive rethinking of the pedal steel, with its silvery liquid tone refracted through Kaphans harmonic vocabulary, skillful arrangements and wide-ranging stylistic compass. Ahhh...HELLO?!?!?.......2007-06-18
Yes...this is very enjoyable material!
BUT--with this and Jeff Pearce and others...it's as if NONE of you have ever heard Pink Floyd's DARK SIDE OF THE MOON!! It seems as if everyone is "astounded" that there is a use for the pedal steel "other than country or perhaps soundtracks" out there! Has David Gilmore's masterful use and playing of it on that and other Pink Floyd work been forgotten THAT easily?!? YES...it wasn't the "primary" instument, but it's inclusion and useage and tone individualized and created with and for it are extraordinary and ground-breaking!
Wake up and smell the coffee brewing...oh ambient fanciers! :-)
Don't think Country and Western, or Hawaiian music!.......2006-04-22
If you've never heard 'Clouds', you're in for a treat. I stumbled upon this song on my cable station's Soundscapes channel, and fell in love with it the first time I heard it. Bruce's music is pure magic. I never knew the pedal steel guitar could produce such a full and sensuous sound until I heard this album. He is a master of the pedal steel guitar.
Like a true pioneer, Bruce takes you down several paths, ranging from a couple of eastern-style tracks, to more traditional 'new-age' compositions. Not to leave country & western totally ignored, his 'High Desert' explores the lost art of western music. 'Outpost' conveys a sense of loneliness and isolation that its name implies.
Don't take my word for it. You can listen to every track on this CD from his website - www.brucekaphan.com. Then buy it!
Country & Eastern And All That Stuff.......2006-03-04
When Bruce Kaphan's "Slider" came out in 2000, as one of the last official releases on the Hearts Of Space label, it made quite a splash-besides the English pedal steel player B.J. Cole and the equally obscure but still immensely talented Chas Smith, not much ambient/space music had been heard from the steel guitar as a source instrument.
"Slider" changed that in a big way: The track "Country & Eastern" substituted a slide guitar where a sitar or esraj might have been; "Clouds" and "Big Brain Small Brain" went off into Jeff Pearce/Michael Brook "infinite guitar" territory, but using the slide as opposed to a heavily processed six string or e-bow. Six years later, "Slider" sounds just as fresh. This is an essential purchase.
Beautiful Pedal Steel Music.......2005-11-11
Modern music fans recognize Bruce Kaphan's name from his work with American Music Club, Chris Isaak, REM, Black Crowes, John Lee Hooker and David Byrne. It's a rare treat to get an instrumental album from such an accomplished sideman. This collection of instrumental "new age" music was originally recorded for the prestigious Hearts Of Space label, and its tone is consistent with the sound of their popular radio show.
The tunes are dreamy, multi-layered steel tracks, dripping with echoes and punctuated with diamond edges. Bruce Kaphan combines his double-neck pedal steel, the recording studio, and a few tasty acoustic instruments to create beautiful ambient tapestries. This CD is on the leading edge of steel guitar art music. It's one of my personal favorites.

Album Description
Former Ventures' lead guitarist Nokie Edwards joins talents with pioneers of Western Swing, The Light Crust Doughboys and former Rick Nelson and Buck Owens steel guitarist Tom Brumley. The meeting is an aural feast of traditional country and folk sounds by some of the finest instrumentalists to ever pick guitars and banjos.

In Future = No Sound Samples = Won't Buy........2007-03-30
I was hoping for western swing with a little more surf twang in the leads than the Bob Wills variety, what I got was what it would sound like if a Monkees cover band did these tunes and dropped out the vocals. Overproduced, overbearing country-type elevator music. As each track started I kept reaching to turn down the volume a little more ...and Beer Barrel Polka wherein someone is banging against a mic does not help the mix. Lesson learned.
Nokie Edwards A+ Grammy Award Level Performance.......2006-09-10
Wonder why the Ventures were the largest selling instrutmental recording group of all time. Two words come to mind, Nokie Edwards!
If you haven't followed Nokie's career then this CD will probably be a revelation. Guitar playing doesn't get much better than this.
Those guitar mags that feature the same no talent rock guitarists that all play variations on the same 6 riffs & these cats call themselves guitarists, let alone muscians. PLEASE!!! Buy this country western theme CD & listen to a true guitarists guitarist & a true musicians musician. Ladies & gentleman presenting NOKIE EDWARDS!!!
Very Best in its Field.......2004-09-08
This is the first instrumental album I turn to for car and home listening. It's an essential album for guitar fans and for country music fans and students. It's unlike Nokie's later albums with The Doughboys which are more pop-oriented and Ventures'-style. This masterpiece, however, is much rawer and roots-oriented, and it sizzles from song-to-song with funky feel. Just wait until you hear "The Orange Blossom Special" and "Tumbling Tumbleweeds". I heard Nokie with The Doughboys in concert in Mesquite, Texas, and it was the best variety show and musical festival I've ever attended. The electricity between the musicians and in the auditorium was atomic-powered.
This Nokie-Light Crust Doughboys series including CHRISTMAS albums, country-folk albums and pop albums is one of the greatest series of albums in instrumental music history.
The Best of Country Instrumental-The Best of Country Guitar.......2004-01-12
This fantastic album is the ultimate country guitar showcase; if you don't like instrumentals with a strong melody line and clarity of tone, then stick to jazz or contemporary western jazz, because this album has classic Patsy Cline/Jim Reeves/Elvis/Hank Williams appeal! This is roots-Americana at its best! And as far as being authentic, players on this album defined the term "country music"! Players like Smokey Montgomery and Bill Simmons of The Light Crust Doughboys are the fathers of country music and Grammy-winning instrumentalists. Even Ventures' great Nokie Edwards, the featured soloist here, has a pedigree in country that's tops: lead guitarist for Buck Owens, Lefty Frizzell, David Frizzell and Shelly West, and many more. Again, don't expect the free-form, progressive jazz of Pat Martino here; this is guitar music with space and tone, Texas meets Nashville! But what this album is...is the best country instro album of the year in the classic country-easy listening vein.
Not my cup of tea..........2003-12-13
I love vintage music like Bob Wills western swing and even newer bands like Asleep At The wheel. This cd is not too good, the playing isn't authentic western swing, and I don't much care for it, it's slightly annoying...

Good way to get to know Gilbert and Sullivan..........2000-06-21
Really now, there is way too much Gilbert and Sullivan in this. Many other people wrote operettas too! Well, there is a little Lehar. But there needs to be more! I thought a little Candide by Bernstein should have been in there too. But the Gilbert and Sullivan excerpts are nothing to be ashamed of. They are done well. A little too operatic. And I just know some of these overtures will delight you. Average recording. Average playing. There's my two cents.
