Hail to the King, baby!.......2001-09-09
Oh boy, I unfortunately must be very critical of this release, as I hold Mr. Diamond in the highest regard and cannot sit back while his great name is desecrated. For the most part, tribute albums are largely viewed as humorous parodies rather than true homage, and this is no exception. However, few tribute albums lack those little golden nuggets buried within a heap of excrement. Now, itýs difficult to judge exactly how a band claims influence by said subject of a ýtributeý, but there are bands that just donýt even bother to try. Letýs break this one down. DARK FUNERAL giving us ýThe Trialý from The Eye sounds nothing like a regular DARK FUNERAL song, they played it verbatim, aside from their lack of singing ability (they even had the high parts done by a female ý I donýt know if thatýs exactly an insult or what)ýbut the point is, if youýre going to do a cover, do it in your own style, so the listener can HEAR the influence! Iým not too familiar with DAMNATION, so it would be difficult to critique their rendition of ýMansion In Darknessý other than musically it is remarkably similar to (though maybe sludgier than) the original. IN AETURNUMýs ýAbigailý rings faithful, grunting aside and gee, I didnýt know USURPER could play slow! Their ýCharoný, albeit muddy is another ýletýs not try to adapt it into our style, but since we canýt sing, we wonýt even make the effortý-type song. Then we come to the first band on the disc that actually made a song their own: EXHUMED grinding and blasting their way through ýNo Presents For Christmasý! Yes, it causes a little chuckle, but the band must be commended for bringing their own element into such a classic! AURORAýs ýEastmannýs Cureý is frightening, while the music is nearly identical to the original, that vocalistýs CRADLE OF FILTH-like screech turns the track into a total turnoff (and they are another to employ a female for the really high-end parts). I donýt understand how DESTINYýS END can exist with a vocalist unaware that he has no singing abilityýskip over ýDressed In Whiteý, itýs too painful. Iýve said it before and Iýll say it again, NOBODY can cover Diamond/Fate like ANCIENT!! They should just be a King Diamond/Mercyful Fate tribute band, because every time they bring one out, it makes their original stuff sound like total ... (which the recent stuff is anyway) ý ýHalloweený would bring a tear to Kingýs painted eye! FALLEN EMPIREýs ýThe Exorcistý (making the Voodoo track the most current on this compilation) is a breathtaking avant-garde experience (drawing similarities to SOMNUSý ýSeasons In The Abyssý on Dwellýs Gateway To Hell: A Tribute To Slayer ýPart Iý); therefore, I must seek out this bandýs work! ENTHRALLýs spooky and melancholic ýThe Portraitý adds an additional haunting element to the classic original, and rounding out the disc is that badass French band AGRESSOR offering some brutality with ýWelcome Homeý ý this band can do little wrong! So, to wrap this up, Necropolisý King Diamond Tribute is about a 50/50 experience, so it is definitely worth the money to nab some ripping new takes on some classic dark Metalýso ýHail to the King, baby!ý

Long live the King!.......2000-02-23
After a couple of tributes to Mercyful Fate, his legendary band from the early 80's, this homage to the King was long overdue. Novice artists at their best. Particularly enjoyable is the Welcome Home version by Prototype. Church Of The Devil is a must for any real metal fan.
