4 out of 5 stars Jackyl's best album.Redneck rock!!.......2007-05-22

The best way to describe Jackyl's sound is that is has the redneck sensibilities of Lynyrd Skynyrd along with the hard rock sounds of AC/DC.Great album all around. The video to"I Stand Alone" just plain rocks with the flatbed trailer gig in the KMart parking lot.The first half is fantastic. It has all the band's best known hits.I thought "Dirty Little Mind" was the best song on here.In 1992,Jackyl was one of just a handful of bands still making this type of rock amongst the grunge rock revolution that was going on.The second half of the album is a bit bland in some spots, but still an album worth owning.A must have for any hard rock/metal collection.

4 out of 5 stars one of my all-time favorites.......2007-05-01

First time I heard the band, I was searching for I Stand Alone by Disturbed and me not paying attention, ended up with the Jackyl version. Needless to say it BLEW MY MIND. I was hooked. I got my hands on the album and was hooked from every track. Dirty Little Mind, Redneck Punk, Lumberjack, When Will It Rain (my favorite song on the cd), Brain Drain, and Reach For Me are my personal favorites on the album. Overall it's a great buy either way and well worth it esp if you're into hard rock.

4 out of 5 stars Jackyl is a genuine hard-rock band!.......2006-01-02

I like this CD because the guitars are not too hidden in the mix. This CD was a hit machine. The only way to tell how great these guys are is to see them live. I love to see them live. I seen them live outside twice and it was fun. At least 50 topless women ended up on stage with the band both times. Live they sound polished, yet very raw and rock'n. The chainsaw is used every time too!

5 out of 5 stars This is the best rock band of all time.......2005-07-28

My fav tracks are 1. I Stand Alone 2. Down on me 3. redneck punk

and my most fav is redneck punk also, the beat rocks, i can barely keep up with it on my drumkit

5 out of 5 stars Jackal,Hot Hard Perfect!.......2005-07-09

This Cd rocks! This band was around the Greenville,SC area for years before they hooked up with vocalist Jesse. They always SHould have been in the charts, maybe Jesse was lucky or just the missing link. Whatever he did,it fit perfectly with the already great music of the Worley Brothers &Co.

4 out of 5 stars Jackyl, Rock Me Roll Me.......2004-05-14

Jackyl, Choice Cuts, reveals a great deal of talent, with a little bit of AC-DC and a pinch of Skynyrd. With guest, Brian Johnson (of AC-DC) on the vocals of Locked and Loaded and the accoustic Secret of The Bottle, Choice Cuts will always stay at the top of my list of Rock and Roll Supergroups!!!

5 out of 5 stars Classic RocknRoll.......2002-06-24

What's to say about this collection?
Great hard rock that isn't afraid have songs laden with catchy hooks and melodies. So many metal bands today focus on heaviness and abandon the tunes.

From the enthusiastic We're an American Band, to the final energetic live recordings, this is an upbeat, getupandgo CD; though Jackyl show a darker, more mature side on songs like Secret of the Bottle, I Am the Walrus, and the melancholic Misery Loves Company. Surprisingly, they pull these slower, more thoughtful numbers off with ease and style.

Despite the fact that Jackyl appeared at the tail-end of the 80s hair metal breakthrough, they aren't popmetal. As they say themselves inside, they draw more influence from 70s hard rock, and their songs are strong and melodic enough not to have to resort to watered-down pop tunes or dire, pointless solos.

I don't know why many consider The Lumberjack to be Jackyl's greatest song. Granted, the chainsaw solos are original, but I'd say it was below the high standard of other tracks featured here.
My only complaints about this album are: the essay inside makes them sound pretty moronic (talking about alternative music: "we kicked the dawg!") Jesse James Dupree's voice can grate on the nerves after repeated listens, and Jackyl chose to release nothing in Britain. They could've reached a lot of people, don't they realise AC/DC are Scottish???

Those complaints don't overshadow the fact that this is a five star CD though: if you like good old-fashioned RocknRoll music then pick this up.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe a 90's Date, But a Solid Sound Nonetheless!.......2001-05-04

When I bought the album, I was not certain what to expect. I knew Down On Me from it's radio play, but didn't know what the rest of the album would sound like. Nine times out of ten, I usually only like the songs I've heard before. This time, I got a good one! I was pleasantly surprised with it and am strongly considering picking up the other albums available.

Having heard Down On Me, I expected the band to have a sound like Dokken and other hard rocking hair bands that are a little bit harder than the other bands. Since they started at the end of the hair bend trend (though a trend that produced the greatest music ever), Jackyl combined the generic rock and roll done hard and fast that hair bands brought to the table and also has a lot of the blues based hard rock like ACDC in their music. As a matter of fact, Brian Johnson, ACDC's lead singer, joins the band to perform "Locked and Loaded" which, not having heard it before, I can honestly say was alone worth the price of the album. It's just a great song, and this is a lot of great music that will help you smile.

Again, it's a feel good bang your head, shake your butt, blow out the speakers in your car album that must be had by all! You will not listen to this album and want to crawl up in a ball and be left alone. It isn't awful grunge music that makes you feel depressed! It's not alternative which translates into depression! It's just great rock and roll music and there isn't a song on the album that I don't like!

5 out of 5 stars JACKYL IS AWESOME!.......1999-12-11

I've seen Jackyl once and I'm seeing them twice. In Allentown Pa. On 12/15/99! Love them. They are the most talented musicians that I've come across in a long time. No words can explain Jesse James Duprees' performances'. I really enjoy this greatest hits cd. They've come a long way......And I know that they're there! LOVE YOU GUYS........KEEP ROCKIN'I

4 out of 5 stars simply awesome.......2007-05-01

Most people when you ask them about this album, will cite the more popular track "Locked and Loaded" but with tracks like "Dumbass Country Boy" which really speaks to the state of the music industry and mainstream fans imo, the track that really doesn't seem to get much notice is "Misery Loves Company" which is easily my faovrite song on the album. Looking forward to seeing them at the House of Blues later this month. While it's not as good as their debut album, it deserves better than a 3.

4 out of 5 stars This Albums pretty good, but not the best.......2004-03-18

This album I purchased because im an AC/DC fan and it contains a great song called "locked and loaded" which Brian Johnson joins Jesse James Depree to sing it! Its the best song on the album! And the rest of the songs are pretty good, but i'd recomend there self titles debuet album more then this one!

5 out of 5 stars "cut the crap".......2003-12-22

jackyl, aa great heavy metal band, also from the 80's. this was a very good album

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......1999-12-21

A must have for any Jackyl fan. Locked and Loaded may be the best song they have recorded since the Lumberjack. But from start to finish this album kicked this Dumb-a__ Country Boy's a__

4 out of 5 stars Buy it for Brian.......1999-05-08

Yeah, Jackyl is pretty good, but the gem on this record is the duet with AC/DC's Brian Johnson "Locked and Loaded" I hope AC/DC will do it on the next tour. It is awesome. The token chainsaw song on this record (the title track)Is also great. "Thanks for the Grammy" is pretty lame though...

5 out of 5 stars Jackyl continues to rock!!.......2005-11-30

This album is a great example of what is missing in rock-n-roll. These boys from the south continue to supply plenty of great inspiration for people who love to rock!!

5 out of 5 stars Best since the first one.......2005-05-30

Jackyl's somewhat disappointing Cut the Crap album, coupled with the sub-par clips of new material provided on the band's Web site, set expectations for Relentless pretty low. But listeners will be pleasantly surprised: It's a killer effort comparable to the band's 1992 self-titled debut.

Dropping most of the introspection and world-weariness that brought Cut the Crap down, Relentless returns to form with attitude, rowdiness and Southern-redneck pride galore.

"You want it heavy? / Well G-- damn / I weigh a ton," screams Jesse James Dupree in the first seconds of the record, and the "relentless" assault of loud guitars and top-of-the-lungs-but-perfectly-in-tune vocals rarely lets up through the 40-minute disc.

Some highlights are "Kill the Sunshine," written in part by Brian Johnson of AC/DC, and the blues ballad "Lend Me a Hand." The latter is one of the quieter moments on the album despite its intense chorus.

There are, however, things that could have been done better. Sometimes the rhythm guitars sound like they're being played through a telephone, and a few tracks could have been left off.

"Heaven Don't Want Me (And Hell's Afraid I'll Take Over)" is listenable but doesn't live up to the standards set by the rest of the album.

The only thoroughly worthless track is "Billy Badass," apparently included just to keep with tradition: every Jackyl record has to have a chainsaw played as a musical instrument on one track.

It does have the hilarious Al Gore diss "I was the first to stand up against the PMRC," though, and it grows on you over time.

Overall, Relentless is a remarkable album, rescuing the band from a steady musical decline. The self-titled record is still the best of the catalog, but Relentless ranks a solid second.

3 out of 5 stars Ehhhh,,,,, self titles was better!.......2004-03-18

I bought this because "AC/DC's Brian Johnson" co wrote "Kill The Sunshine" with the group! but with the lacking members and everythign else, this album failed to be as great as the previous ones! I recomend there self titles album over this one!

2 out of 5 stars No Rock, No Roll, No Jackyl.............2003-08-06

One listen was enough for me ... 40% of the original band is missing. The songs have no melody; and without the twin lead guitar attack this is Jackyl in name only. Notice how many used one's there are for sale? 'Nuff said.

4 out of 5 stars Take My Word For It: It Rocks!.......2003-07-20

I have read the pertinacious record critics reviews of this album and also have read some fan reviews echoing their sentiments. So, what did these fans want out of this album? An attempt at being contemporary and sounding completely out of place like some other albums by established bands? This album rocks! Take MY word for it!

While others may call this album Jackyl being their 80's self, which is a laugh because the band was formed in 1990 and only released their first album in 1992 so fundamentally they're wrong from the start, I call it a breath of fresh air in an otherwise drowning era of metal. The songs are proud to be rockers and proud to be energetic. You know, when it is obvious that the musicians are actually enjoying what they are playing as much as the fans are listening to it? Rarely found in today's "look at your feet and feel sorry for yourself" music but Jackyl is loud and proud baby!

Kill the Sunshine is a solid rocker with assisted lyrics from AC/DC front man Brian Johnson. Speaking of AC/DC, did anybody else stop dead in their tracks when Mr. Evil came on? If Bon Scott was ever reincarnated, he came back to sing Mr. Evil for Jackyl! I also love the attitude in I'm On Fire and The More You Hate It (It Makes Me Want It More.) But, I admit that there are a few things that I am not completely thrilled by. "Billy Badass" is a far too modern sounding tune that pushes the button of rap metal a touch too hard. I don't listen to nor respect rap metal and if that is what this album was about, I wouldn't have purchased it. I also could have used a touch more chainsaw! But, one sour grape out of a dozen does not ruin an album. It still rocks!

This is not an album that a Staind fan would enjoy. But, I wonder if people that listen to that style of rock are even in search for enjoyment. I like fun. I like high energy entertainment and that is what this album is. If that's old fashioned or "played out," guilty as charged. But, I love it and always will.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-03-21

Jackyl is one of those straight-up heavy rock bands. If you like AC/DC you will love these guys.

3 out of 5 stars As a best of Choice cuts is much better!.......2007-01-20

If your looking for a best of I suggest find Choice Cuts! Not only does it have better songs but includes two covers Were an American band/I am the walrus, but some of the tracks are live and you get more of a feel of how Jackyl was a contuance of the great dirty rock bands like Aerosmith, AC/DC, Van Halen and countless others that seeing live gave you the best objective of who and how the band really is! Another great album to get with choice cuts is Staying alive wich has covers of Aerosmith, AC/DC, and Lynard Skynard! The lumberjack is probably their worst song and is always the first song everyone plays, don't be narrow minded or just listen to your radio, listen to some of the other stuff (staying alive 5 stars)! Jackyl Rocks!

3 out of 5 stars Best Of???.......2005-11-15

All the songs here are great Jackyl classics, but how this album can be called a "Best Of" is a joke. There's more good stuff missing off this "Best Of" than is on it. Give this CD a miss unless you've never heard of Jackyl before and want an introduction - trouble is ... this introduction will have you looking for the original albums and you'd be much better off going for them in the first place: might cost a few $'s more, but it's worth it.

1 out of 5 stars NOT the best of Jackyl.......2005-08-24

You've got to be kidding when "Locked & loaded", "Mental Mastabation","Dixeland" and countless others are missing from a so-called "Best Of" buy the albums on there own or one of the better greatest hits previously available.

5 out of 5 stars Killer Straight up Hard Rock Kick Ass Band.......1999-01-08

Jackyl is the rock band of the 90's that doesn't depend on gimmicks, trendy hair cuts and clothing to project their image. They are just straight up rockers. No drool here..!

3 out of 5 stars No ... ballad.......2003-02-10

In the inner sleeve you can read: "This album does not contain any ...ballads or keyboard." This is in a way a clear declaration of what to expect on this very strong 3 star album from Jackyl.

As "I stand alone" starts off you know that this isn't Hair Metal! The song is built around a very heavy and attractive guitar riff and you can't avoid a little head-banging, or at least a bit of imaginary guitar playing. The voice of singer Jesse Dupree is rough and sounds a little bit like Krokus' Mark Storace or even Brian Johnson from AC/DC.

"Dirty little mind" and "Down on me" are two mid tempo rockers that would satisfy the average heavy metal fan. After three strong tunes, Jackyl decide to slow things down a bit in the heavy but slow "When will it rain". "Redneck punk" is a drum driven song and if southern hillbillys gave punk rock a shot it's not impossible it would sound something like this. "The lumberjack" is blues metal feautering a solo played on a chainsaw (!). Next to follow are "Reach for me" and "Back off brother", and `tho they're not great tunes they sure are good. "Brain drain" follows the same formula, and to be frank - by this time Jacky's songs seem to sound too much alike each other. My silent prayers get answered right away and "Just like a devil" shows Jackyl in their prime. The closing number "She loves my cook" is the albums low point.

Jackyl's follow up album "Push comes to shove" was a real disappointment and I lost interest in the band...

5 out of 5 stars Solid.......1999-08-16

This album is by far the best that Jackyl has made. Every track is excellent. This album really brings back memories for me of my high school days. Plus, it has "She Love's My Cock".
