2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-03-09

First of all, I'm a big Switchfoot fan. I also occasionally enjoy classical music. I've even enjoyed previous string tributes to other bands. Strung Out on OK Computer comes to mind, as well as a Pink Floyd tribute.

But this just doesn't work for me. I liked maybe two of the songs on here, the rest sounded cheesy and pretentious. I ended up giving my copy away to my little brother for Christmas. :o)

And I don't even know what "The Sharing of Tries" is.

3 out of 5 stars For the complete Switchfoot Fan.......2005-10-11

Most people will enjoy this album if they are fans of Switchfoot's older music. Although the album has a few hits from "The Beautiful Letdown", most of the CD features hits from earlier albums. My only complaint about the album, is that it is an entirely digital recording from what I hear. The songs are not performed by a real string quartet. If you are a fan of classical music then this might bother you, otherwise it is a pretty good album.

4 out of 5 stars Another good one!.......2005-06-05

I'm not a big fan of Switchfoot...but this Quartet versions of these songs are amazing. I think this album takes Switchfoot's songs to a whole new level and improves upon their composition. Switchfoot should do more work with strings, especially if the outcome is as great as this!

5 out of 5 stars Very awesome String-Quartet Tribute.......2005-04-03

This is my favorite String-Quartet Tribute so far. If you're a fan of Switchfoot (and definately orchestra type instrumentals) you're probably going to like this. Songs like Meant To Live, Dare You To Move, Learning To Breathe, Chem 6A, and some of your other favorites are all here. This was the second type of these String Tributes I heard, and I was very impressed. This isn't the switchfoot your used to with singing and guitar, but replaced with violins and cello's and that sort. Even though an odd replacement, it's just as good as the original Switchfoot and gives you a different hear on the music. 2 thumbs up.

The only reason I didn't put five stars is because it didn't include "When the Lights Go Down". Otherwise, it's alright

5 out of 5 stars Lovely music!.......2001-12-18

These CDs are for lovers of Irish music and of the "old-timey" sound of John McCormack. The songs themselves are lovely, and James Flannery sings them exactly as they need to be sung... in a simple and straightforward manner. The music is evocative of the sound and spirit of a long-ago time. The accompanying book gives interesting background information about Thomas Moore and also about the songs. Good listening for a rainy day or a snowy night with the fire blazing.

4 out of 5 stars drive and harmonics.......2003-04-18

This group is really moving. They have a special sound that gets stronger with each set. I'm picking up a kind of really driving sound with some background actual synthizied harmony. This is one of the best yet.

5 out of 5 stars Down Cycle rocks...plain and simple........2001-08-03

i've been hooked on Down Cycle since last summer when i saw them open for finger eleven. They are amazing, and the only travesty is that so few people out of Raleigh, NC have heard of them. the seven songs on this album are downright rocking. the only other band that really comes to mind with Down Cycle is Tool, but they're a little more immediate and straightforward than that. i've listened to the CD countless times in the year that i've gotten it, and it gives me energy every time i listen to it. from the sing-along catchiness of "Alone and Dirty" to the live energy of "Undone" and "Seep", Breathe This Life is an amazing CD. Down Cycle is definitely going places!

5 out of 5 stars Breathing Life into Music.......2000-10-05

Wow!!! What a mind-blowing CD. The catchy beats and lyrics have me listening to this CD non-stop. I have waited a long time for a band like DownCycle to appear. Their following in Raleigh NC is massive and their fans are loyal. The voice of the lead singer Mike Bonavita combined with the guitars of BUk, Robby, bassist Todd P. and the drums of Barry make for a very interesting blend of music that everyone can listen to. For anyone who likes rock and enjoy listening to such bands as Staind, Tool ( A Perfect Circle), Fingereleven, etc. will enjoy this CD immensely. All in all I have enjoyed this CD and have bought many copies to give to my friends so that they may enjoy it as well. I have a feeling that DownCycle will be national soon and that they are here to stay so I encourage people to buy the CD and see what they think.

4 out of 5 stars Breathe This disc.......2000-07-16

I first listened to this disc in the car and it was ok, then I listened to it real loud in the headphones and it was great. Most of the music is really straight forward but is delivered very well and with a lot of emotion. A great first effort from an independent band, they will surely be making some great records in the future. I reccomend to give it a chance.

5 out of 5 stars A Pretty Darn Good Lohengrin.......2005-04-14

I got this Lohengrin from the local library, and I tried to get a taste of what I was in for by looking it up here on Amazon.com. But to my dismay there were no reviews. And later, to even greater dismay on my part, I found that there is no reason for such a lack of reviews! For this is a solid Lohengrin. While Peter Hofmann is not the most vocally resplendent Lohengrin (he isn't a Konya or a Domingo), he turns is a good performance, and Karen Armstrong is a passionate Elsa who plays the part admirably. The rest of the cast is strong on the whole. But the real splendors of this set spring from the pit - Woldemar Nelsson (of whom I had never heard until I discovered this recording) leads the Beyreuth Festival orchestra in a burning account. They are a truly Wagnerian orchestra (it would be a shame if they weren't), and Nelsson brings out all the Master's colors. The energy of a live performance just pours out. Never have I heard the preludes and prominent sections played with such an intense timbre. It's amazing to hear.

Therefore, though this set doesn't match Kempe, Solti, or Leinsdorf overall, it is a strong alternate set that should not be ignored.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Definitely worth a listen for Nilsson and Bernstein.......2007-05-29

It seems curious that Birgit Nilsoon and Leonard Bernstein, at the very height of their respective fame, should make a radio boradxast of Fidelio form rome. After all, they could have headlined at the greatest opera houses in the world (but never did, so far as recording is concerned). Both are in great form, and the mono sound form 1970 is listenable, with the voices close to the microphone, as per usual in broadcasts. Bernsteindoesn't exceed his DG recording form Vienna, and Nilsson doesn't recapture the excitment she showed under Maazel on Decca. Even so, these are great artists and what they do is worth a listen.

Orchestra and chorus are decidedly second-rate, and the rest of the cast consists of the unknown Sojess doing a respectable job as Florestan and everyone else chewing up the scenery. There's a slapdahs feeling about this performance, and Fidelio is one opera that one should hear in toto, not in chunks. Those drawbacks keep me from giving this interesting CD a higher rating.

2 out of 5 stars Hollow sound distracts from performance.......2000-03-14

While I'm no judge of Fidelio recordings, I found that the quality of this recording distracted from whatever enjoyment I would have found from listening. Recorded live, this recording has a hollow, distant sound the almost hides the orchestra and dulls the soloists.

The only real value of this disk is due to its being (I think) the only Fidelio highlights disk available on Amazon (I have seen others in stores, including one from Karajan). Unless you must buy a Fidelio highlights disk here, I would not recommend buying this one.
