Originally dismissed as a Led Zeppelin knockoff, Whitesnake, fronted by ex-Deep Purple singer David Coverdale, clattered around their hometown of Yorkshire, England for about six years before being discovered in the U.S. Their U.S. debut (fourth album) Slide It In (1984) captured the libidinous, restless spirit of frustrated youth, and climbed to No. 40 on the Billboard album chart. Eventually, it went double platinum on the back of the stealthy, pulsing "Slow An' Easy" and the propulsive title track. Shortly before recording the album, Coverdale recruited former Thin Lizzy guitarist John Sykes, who provided the band with the flair and technical wizardry it needed to become a contender in the big-hair, pop metal sweepstakes. --Jon Wiederhorn

5 out of 5 stars A classic rock album with John Sykes.......2007-06-28

You can listen for the first time John Sykes with whitesnake, but you can hear the first led zeppelin influences of David Coverdale!
This cd is one of my favorite!

5 out of 5 stars The peak of Whitesnake........2006-10-26

Slide It In represents (to me at least) David Coverdale and Whitesnake at their peak. While this album didn't quite set any sales records when it initially came out back in 1984, word of mouth spread about it and it reached respectable gold status here in the states. After the self titled 1987 album blew things wide open, people would go back and check out Slide It In and push it's overall sales to double platinum.

As a few other reviewers have already mentioned, this album was originally recorded back in 1983 and came out in Britain first. On the advice however of Whitesnake's new A&R rep with their new lable Geffen, David Coverdale would re-mix the album, add some flashier guitar parts on the tracks and re-sequence the song listing.

I have never heard the original British version, but most Whitesnake fans seem to agree that it's the superior version compared to the American version.

Even if you end up getting the more widely available American version, you'll end up getting one of the best hard rock albums to ever be made.

While David Coverdale's sexist at times lyrics can get kind of goofy here and there, his surefire delivery and amazing range manages to sell every single line with the utmost sincerity and authority.

The backing band is amazing as usual with keyboards by ex-Deep Purple member Jon Lord, seering guitar leads by John Sykes (on the American verion only) and thundering drum work by Cozy Powell. The bass work is a little lower in the mix compared to their prior albums to this, but it still is rumbling and moves things along quite nicely.

Slide It In represents to me a perfect balance between their blues/rock past and the much more commercial direction that they would go in with their next release.

Any discerning hard rock or 80's metal fan would do wise to snatch up this album as I feel that it greatly represents this band at the height of their musical prowess.

5 out of 5 stars Original release please?.......2006-07-05

This album is great. Admittedly. But the original, British mix, including Colin Hodgkinson (instead of Neil Murray) and Mel Galley (instead of John Sykes)is far, far superior. The music haad far more balls and less flash. The mix, with Cozy's drumming, was like atomic blast after atomic blast on my stereo. I remember that well 20-something years later! Release the British mix. American releases always suck by comparison.

5 out of 5 stars An underrated classic.......2006-03-13

This, in my opinion, was Whitesnake at their peak before getting less consistent with their next 2 releases 1987 & Slip of the tongue. It was where they combined their bluesy rock with commercialism to just the right balance. The previous release, Saints and sinners has also got that winning formula. Thats why they picked 2 songs off that album to make 1987 as popular as it was. Those songs of course being Here I go again and crying in the rain. Whitesnake were never as consistent as they were on this and Saints and sinners. It definitely would have been interesting to see what the follow up to this record would have been like had Coverdale's main collaborator, Mel Galley, not been forced out of the band due to an unfortunate accident (involving his successor John Sykes). Oh well. After that the guitars and overall production was given too much American hard rock treatment and its probably because of that that the majority of people remember the band for the 1987 album and being referred to as a "poodle rock, hair rock etc" band which isn't really accurate considering what the majority of their work consists of.

4 out of 5 stars The Best Whitesnake Album ".".......2005-11-29

From what I have read in a couple of rock guides this album was finished in 1983 with Mick Moody and Mel Galley on guitars. It was later re-mixed for America, at which point Moody left and former Tygers Of Pan Tang/Thin Lizzy guitarist John Sykes joined the band. Sykes had recorded the excellent Thunder And Lighting with Thin Lizzy in 1983. I am not sure how much input he had on SIN but I remember he was the only guitarist to appear in the Slow N Easy video. Anyways, I have heard every Whitesnake album and this one is their best. The riffs are good, the solos are melodic, the choruses are catchy, and the rhythm section is tight. The production by the one and only Martin Birch is very clear and robust. I like every song with the exception of just a couple tracks so I won't bother going into each one. Just get the album if you don't already have it and enjoy good early 80s hard rock. Four and a half stars!

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

As with 1999's Respect box, which chronicled women recording artists, Rhino again attempts to capture and condense a mighty field with the six-CD Say It Loud! And again, it largely succeeds. A companion to the VH1 series of the same name, Say It Loud! tells one story and many. It covers the development of many related genres, the business of locking many outsize talents and personalities into the grooves of records, and the music as it mirrored a rustling, ever-changing society--that last underscored by the inclusion of spoken sound bites (everyone from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to Sammy Davis Jr.). But within these larger themes move many smaller but no less compelling tales. The roughly chronological programming allows for accidental, startling juxtapositions--disc one places Paul Robeson's pained, dignified reading of "Ol' Man River" just a few tracks away from bluesman Son House's insistence in "My Black Mama (Part 1)" that "there ain't no burnin' Hell." From there, pop ballads, big bands, bop, gospel, doo-wop, rock & roll, soul from Motown! Memphis! and Philly!, gorgeous civil-rights-era jazz, funk, and rap cohere and speak to one another in a selection about as good as can be expected given its length and various legal restrictions. (The most glaring omission is Stevie Wonder.) Any taint of "this stuff is good for you" is lost in the parade of great gifts, personalities, statements, dance crazes, poetry, and word games. If the above track listing contains lots of names you don't recognize, Say It Loud! will offer you a topnotch one-stop survey course. --Rickey Wright

3 out of 5 stars a bit silly.......2005-12-05

Isn't this a bit silly? Black music is the basis for a lot, if not most, of the American music we cherish today. Limiting it to 6 CDs just seems disrespectful. It would take someone's entire collection to do justice to black music, which is American music itself, at its finest and most original.

5 out of 5 stars A History of Black Music in America.......2003-02-01

When I found this collection on Amazon.com, I nearly cried (okay, I did cry). This includes much that anyone who truly loves African American music could ever want. It's not only entertaining, it's educational. How pleased I was when it arrived that there were not only six exceptional CD's, but a beautiful book included also. Additionally, I love the excerpts of famous speeches and quotes, etc. that are included between songs. If you truly love R&B as well as it's roots, buy this compilation and be satisfied that this was money well spent.

5 out of 5 stars an absolute must have!!.......2002-08-04

To any black person who wants educate their child musically, this is a must have, yes there are some omissions, but the depth and breadth of the artists represented is astonishing. I will listen this with my child very often, as a history lesson.

4 out of 5 stars What.....No Stevie????.......2002-02-13

Stevie Wonder has to be the epitome of stylistic uniqueness among song writers, African-American or otherwise. He is also one of the most proliferate, with a body of work that spans nearly 4 decades. The influence of his genius upon the music world is unquestionable. How, then, could this musical phenomenon been omitted from an otherwise outstanding collection?

3 out of 5 stars No James Brown???.......2002-01-18

They really have a History of Black Music Compilation and leave out James Brown? No James Brown? Uh...what's going on here? One of the most important figures in music of this century and he's excluded...for shame

Album Description

1984's Slide It In was the first album that showed that Whitesnake was truly attempting to make it big in the U.S. Its sound was becoming more radio-friendly, but still retained the biting hard rock edge present on its earlier albums. The set features such boisterous rockers as the album-opening title track, the grinding "Slow an' Easy," and the melodic "Love Ain't No Stranger." EMI. 2003.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Slide WHAT in?.......2006-02-27

I bought the U.S. version of this first, so I'm obviously more partial to that one. This U.K. version was the first one to be recorded and has Micky Moody instead of guitarist John Sykes, and some bassist by the name of Colin instead of original Whitesnake member Neil Murray. The songs are in a completely different order, starting out with the atmospheric hard rocker " Gambler " instead of the title track, which actually comes next.

The difference in the mixes are immediately noticeable...the U.S. version has the guitars and drums louder in the mix, while Jon Lord's keyboards and Colin's bass are more prominent on the U.K. version. There is also a noticeable difference in some of the backing vocals. As I stated earlier, I prefer the U.S. one, probably because I heard it first and I think it sounds louder, more radio friendly and has more guitar.

Well, whatever one you choose to buy, this is still a very good album and one of Whitesnake's best albums. It's more consistent in terms of musical style than their earlier albums, with the emphasis more on straight forward, in your face hard rock, with just a little bit (but not too much) rhythm and blues thrown in. And Coverdale still has a bit of a preacher man quality about his singing, except that he is preaching about love and sex and sliding his thingy in! He is in top vocal form here, as well. Cozy Powell provides a very solid backbeat throughout the entire album, breathing some extra fire into these songs. And the guitar playing cannot be faulted either.

In terms of songs, my favorites include the blistering title track (though I like the U.S. version of this song much better, especially Sykes' guitar solo, which just blows me mind!), the aforementioned " Gambler ", the upbeat hard rocker " Guilty of Love ", the highly singalongable and clappable " Slow An' Easy ", and "Standing In the Shadow "( I particularly like the backing vocals during the refrain).

There is some filler here, like " Hungry For Love ", and "Spit It Out ", but overall, I find this to be one of Whitesnake's most consistently listenable and enjoyable albums.

4 out of 5 stars Hear the difference.......2003-07-08

This is the version of Slide It In that was released in Europe & Canada only, prior to the US release. This release features Mel Galley & Mickey Moody on guitar with the US version including John Sykes & combinations of Moody & Galley. This version has a more blusey sound with John Lord's organ more prominent than on the US version. Listen to some of the solos as they differ from the one's recorded on the US release. A great hard rock album without all the overproduction. This is what a hard rock album should sound like not the pretty boy bands that call themselves rockers today!
