Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Much better than The Heavy.......2005-08-22

Perhaps the funding from the major label (Epic) was the only thing makin these guys sound good cause this cd is bad@$$, but "The Heavy", lacking the direction of major label instruction lacks good vocals, tight production, and catchy crunchy riffs. This being said, pick this hard rock grunge machine up today and don't make the mistake of purchasing their 2nd cd.

1 out of 5 stars Please listen to me.......2005-03-23

It is not often that I like to be a "negative nancie" and write a review that is unfavorable to a band. In this instance I must make an exeption. There are very few CDs that I ever regret buying however "no pleasantries" is on that list. This entire album is filtered, regurgitated grunge chords over effects ridden vocals. If anything this album sounds like a charicature of the grunge sound. In many of the reviews posted there is reference to bands like AIC and Soundgarden, but, no offense intended, mentioning those bands in the same sentence as this hunk a junk is like blasphemy to a Seattlite's ears. Here let me explain, if you think back to early AIC, the "facelift" album to be exact, the big single at the time was "man in the box." It was a repetitive chunky riff through light Wah and heavy distortion pedals. The reason that sound worked and this doesn't is you added the melody of Layne's vocals over the top of it. It ties the two sounds together creating a song that is almost impossible not to head bang to. Ok next, thing of the Stone temple pilot's album "core" and the songs "sin/naked sunday." Scott Weiland uses a megaphone to distort his voice in the bridge to create a disjointed eerie sound to his voice. Now combine those two elements and add a screaming singer that can't quite find his pitch and you get U.P.O. Seperate the elements are catchy and effective, together it sounds like slop. I must say that I am very exicited that more and more bands are showing their grunge influences over their rap influences. And I think many bands of done so, while still achieving their own sound. Bands like Seether and Shinedown come to mind. So I think it can be done well, this album just feels like a mockery. It's like a bad mix tape that should have been left in the garage.

4 out of 5 stars Good for fans of Alice in Chains and Soundgarden.......2004-11-21

UPO's debut is fairly good, but it's definitely nothing new. As other reviews have said, it's the same grunge tricks that were done in the early 90's by greats like AIC and Soundgarden. So to make this simple, and to repeat myself for the 3rd time, if you liked AIC and Soundgarden, you'd probably like UPO. Not every song is memorable, but most of the songs on here are very good, like "Godless", "The Hurt", and "Feel Alive". The singer is good, and the songs are well-written; but it's all been done before. So if you like grunge, and wish AIC was still around, pick this up. I give it a 7/10.

3 out of 5 stars Solid album, lacking something. .......2004-10-25

This is a good disc that seems to be missing something. What could it be? Originality, that's it!

I saw these guys live and that is where they won be over. As far as the disc goes, it is good, but not essential.

5 out of 5 stars Sounds like everyone else?.......2004-06-06

At first i didn't like this cd but now its one of my favorites. The cd grew on me. I seen them live and they were great. To say that when you here them on the radio you dont know if it's them because they sound like everyone else is retarded. The music is simple and a little unoriginal but the singer has one of the most reconizable voices in modern-rock. How could you not know his voice when you here it. The new cd isn't that good the songs are too simple and average sounding. Underground is a great song and the fall and go are good but the rest is very average.
