Television Meets Psych Rock Meets Spaghetti Western.......2007-06-19
Each of the Paisley Underground bands seemed to have their own little slant on the sounds of the movement, which was about bringing guitar-driven, psychedelic music back to the fore in the synth-heavy 80s. True West's bent was a little hard to figure. There were the duelling guitar wizards, Tolman and McGrath, who sounded more like Verlaine and Lloyd than any 1960s guitarists. There was the feeling of the old West, not just in the band's name but in their sound and feel - something that put you in mind of tan chinos, shoe boots with spurs, shots of rye at the local saloon, and lots of dirt. Then there was the psychedelic thing - the cover of Pink Floyd's "Lucifer Sam," the sometimes trippy lyrics, the spiralling guitar lines . . . In the liner notes to this compilation of True West's best material, it is suggested that they hit their peak on the full-length album, Drifters. But that album, despite its excellent opening track, "Look Around," pales in comparison to the EP, Hollywood Holiday. The eight songs on the EP represented all of the best elements of True West - the songs seem fresh, they keep you guessing what might come next, each one has its own little angle on the whole picture the band was presenting then. The album, meanwhile, gets tired after the third or fourth track, and feels like a labor from there. And the three tracks produced by Tom Verlaine thrown on at the end are notweworthy for historical reference, but otherwise pretty unremarkable. If you were into the Paisley Underground thing when it was happening, or if you just like guitar-heavy psychedelic rock, you will absolutely want to pick up this CD. Just be prepared to hear a combination of inspired gems and sludge.
Making The World Safe For Guitars.......2007-06-15
Back in the early-mid '80s, there was talk that the electric guitar was going to go the way of the dinosaur and the dodo bird to replaced by keyboards, computers and things. Bands like True West took a stand and helped save the six-string from the onslaught of the MIDI monster. The dueling guitar duo of Richard McGrath and Russ Tolman was on par with Television's Verlaine and Lloyd, in fact Tom Verlaine was so impressed with True West that he produced three tracks, which are luckily included as bonus tracks on this two-for reissue of the band's first two albums: Hollywood Holiday and Drifters. Drawing inspiration from Syd Barrett era Floyd, 40s film noir, the Beck and Page era Yardbirds, late night 80s cable TV, the San Francisco Sound, and the Mercury space program, True West created a couple classic albums that sound fresh and vital today.
Great 80's psychedelic.......2007-06-11
I own both the original EP and LP on vinyl, the EP is more feedback laden, the LP was, I don't know, more laid back, but w/good dual guitar songs. Both EP and LP appear to be on this CD, so enjoy!

Live Killers just rocks!!!.......2007-03-21
This is a great live cd. I mean, it was just an awesome show. There was one tiny problem. Some of the cd sound like it was faded or something. Maybe at the time was recorded, the group didn't have great eqiupment or the sound quality wasn't good. Other than that, it's a great cd!!!!
A great live album.. PERIOD!.......2007-01-14
Ok for starters I agree that most live albums are not all that good b/c of all the excess loud speaker sound vocals but lets be honest here... this album rocks. It doesn't matter if this album is not from one show or not.. it's good. Yes I agree it is not 1000% clear compared to let;s say live show recordings of today but lets' remember no real quality is lacking on these recordings. Hands down I can't stop listening to the fast version of "We Will Rock You" (which hands down is the best show opening tune any band could do besides MAYBE ACDC's "Highway to Hell") and "Don't Stop Me Now". I used to think that song was dumb and cheesy but it is a operatic rock classic and apparently very popular. Get this album if you want one of the top 2 live Queen albums ever produced. Go see Almost Queen which is a tribute band in the NY area if you want to feel like you are live in concert. Unbelievable!
Freddie didn't sound the same live..........2006-11-16
Instrumentally speaking, this live album is proof of the musicianship of Roger, Brian and John. But as much as I've always loved Freddie's voice on record and have been mesmerized by his performance in music videos, I have yet to hear a recorded-live performance of his where he sounded anything like he did in the studio. He can't hit the high notes. His voice cracks. Of course, while I'll grant that absolutely nothing could take away his undeniable stage presence and charismatic performing ability, his live vocals always come up short for me. I remember buying this as a vinyl record when it came out in '79 and I was aghast and disillusioned by the poor quality of Freddie's voice on some of the tracks. However, I still did love the album enough to purchase it again on CD from Amazon some 25 years later. But the reason why I love it has all to do with Brian and John's strumming and Roger's drumming and little to do with Freddie's live singing. Had I SEEN it live I might have loved it for Freddie's onstage showmanship. But the singing?? There are no echo chambers, overdubbing, or pitch correction machines available for live performance. Brighton Rock is my favorite track on the album because it is 90% instrumental. Even though Freddie's vocals are competent on this one, it's not a challenging song vocally. On this album -- Bohemian Rhapsody? Love of My Life? Dreamer's Ball? Rather unlistenable. Freddie sounds awful. I'd say this recording IS in fact a MUST for die-hard Queen fans. But if you're just a casual fan, I'd say stick with Queen's studio greatest hits selections. If you haven't heard Freddie live before, you're in for an unpleasant surprise. I own absolutely all of Queen's studio recordings, pre-Bohemian Rhapsody through The Game (after The Game they became another band, in my view) and I loved the Freddie who sang on record and who performed in music videos. Singing live? No real love here, it pains me to say. That said, I still believe Queen is one of the greatest rock bands of all time.
THIS IS IT !.......2006-08-17
The finest live album ever made.
Queen's definitive statement.
I was there in 1979 (Vancouver show).
Nothing else can be said.
A Million Stars.
PS: the reason Rhapsody is played with a tape is because Queen did not have 'a house band' there, you moron. Bass, Guitar, Drums ... that's it. And it was fantastic, I was there ... they come on at the end for the rocking finale dressed up in new costumes and it's all good ... no, it was GREAT ! and still is.
It's A Kind of Magic.......2006-07-24
Yes, we all know from reading the other reviews the sound quality isn't going to be blowing you away on any Dolby Digital 5.1 surround systems. But what makes this album so wonderful is because it is unlike any other Queen album. Sure you could go download studio versions of the songs on this album but unlike most live Albums I don't believe I heard one song that was the same as it's studio counterpart. 39" for example was a 12-string acoustic solo with Freddie singing the lead vocals. I'm not going to feed you that "they were in their prime" stuff because to me they always sound good and I don't notice much difference between Live Killers (79) and Live at Wembley Stadium (86) except for the sound quality and the fact that all the selections here were from their pre-synthesizer era. The songs are all unique here and many are uptempo, more upbeat, and more intense than their studio counterparts. All in all it's a fun album to listen to and it has a certain magic about it because as I said before there is no other Queen album out there like it. If you can look past the sound quality and don't mind the fact that it's different from the original the you won't be dissapointed.

Making death threats is serious, Terri.......2006-04-05
Wow, did you read that review by that girl who called for a violent death? Makes you wonder if she's a psycho. Anyway, Queen is horrible. They're almost as horrible as Freddie Mercury's overbite. Skip and get the new Pink.
FREDDIE MERCURY IS THE GREATEST.......2006-04-05
LIVE KILLERS is a terrific album from Queen who were arguably one of the greatest rock bands of all time. This great cd contains blistering renditions of classics like BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY,WE WILL ROCK YOU and WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS.IF YOU BUY THIS YOU ARE WORTHY OF RESPECT.
Fed Up needs to die a violent death for trashing Queen!.......2006-04-05
Blue Racer: Say bug, haven't we reported him before. Japanese Beetle: He is like a cockroach, hard to get rid of. Blue Racer: This live Queen album rocks. Japanese Beetle: you ain't kidding. Robbie Williams is a h**o who couldn't get Ginger Spice(we did and she loved us). SAYONARA!
Possibly Queen's greatest hour as a live band.......2006-04-03
Queen released their first live album Live Killers in July of 1979.
The album was the band's first double live album and was their sixth attempt of recording the band's live show as they had recorded shows at The Rainbow Theater in London in late 1974, the classic Hammersmith Odeon shows Christmas Eve 1975, Hyde Park in London in September of 1976, Earl's Court in London in June of 1977 and The Houston Summit in Houston Texas in December of 1977. Apparently, only one has been officially released which was the Rainbow on VHS in late 1992 in the UK although Earls Court and Houston 1977 deserve legitimate release.
The Live Killers album was recorded in early 1979 in Europe on the band's Jazz tour and produced by the four Queen members. Freddie Mercury, Brian May, John Deacon and Roger Taylor proved beyond the shadow of a doubt that Queen were a superior live band to studio. I prefer this album plus the We Will Rock You DVD filmed in Montreal in 1981 and On Fire at the Bowl over Live at Wembley Stadium as Live Killers, On Fire at the Bowl and the WWRY DVD had a young and hungry Queen.
The Live Killers album had a rocked up version of We Will Rock You to kick the album off which was released as a single here in the US but stiffed. Other highlights of this album include Let Me Entertain You, Spread Your Wings, Now I'm Here, Brighton Rock, Don't Stop Me Now, Bohemian Rhapsody, Love of my Life(a Top 20 single in the UK) and the closing We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions medley.
The other tracks are the medley of Death On Two Legs/Killer Queen/Bicycle Race/I'm in Love With My Car/Get Down Make Love/You're My Best Friend(all tracks are indexed separately on the CD), the unplugged Dreamers Ball, '39, Keep yourself Alive, a rocking Don't Stop Me Now, a spirited Tie Your Mother Down and Sheer Heart Attack all rock superior than its studio counterparts.
The Live Killers album peaked at #16 in the US and went Double Platinum with ease as Queen were huge here in America when this album first emerged.
I first received this CD in May of 1992 and what a purchase. If you want the best of live Queen, look no further.
This album is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Album Description
KILLERS doesn't need to be introduced to you anymore, given that they are the only French heavy-metal band to be still active since the early Eighties. Considered now a compulsory reference on the local scene, this line-up from the Pays Basque starts the third millennium feeling themselves equal to the "new" bands ! After the live opus "Ennemis En Public" (1996) that looked back on more than ten years of professional career, the six first studio albums were reissued by the Brennus label. The first two, "
Fils De La Haine" (1985) and "Danger De Vie" (1986) were originally issued on a major record label. The later ones were produced by Bruno DOLHEGUY around a renewed team: "Mise Aux Poings" (1987), "Résistances" (1989), "Cités Interdites" (1992) and "Contre-Courant" (1995). Since then, KILLERS has recorded an album per year: "Fort Intérieur" (1998), "109" (1999) and "Mauvaises Graines" (2000). Given their growing success abroad (Particularly in Germany), KILLERS has got rougher and issued the first English version of one of their albums, until then all sung in French (Adding up a few tracks in Basque): "Killing Games" (2001). That year also gave them a chance to issue a new version called "Mise Aux Poings - 2001", sung by Bruno DOLHEGUY and including a longer than 9 minutes high quality video. If one say that "Habemus Metal" also includes a powerful as well as unrespectable cover, 2002 proves to be an excellent year from them. Second album recorded with an audience, "Le Côté Live !" (2003) allows the listener to rediscover the tracks from the beginnings performed by the current band. The least we can say is that the result is astounding ! An absolutely indispensable discography !

Customer Reviews:
Queen's finest hour live.......2005-11-07
Live Killers (1979.) Queen's first live album.
At the end of the seventies, Queen was on top of the world. The band had just released their seventh album, Jazz, and had scored a number of massive worldwide hits. Their popularity was only continuing to rise. Freddie Mercury, John Deacon, Roger Taylor, and Brian May had proven they could rock and roll like no other group on the planet, and in 1979, just a year after releasing the Jazz album, the group released its first live album - the double LP Live Killers. Queen was known for their excellent studio albums - but how would they fare in a live released - previously uncharted territory for the band? Read on for my review.
I had some serious doubts about this album. For one thing, I don't care much for live albums, since often they are just cash cows to try to make people buy inferior versions of songs they already own. I've been disappointed by many live albums, even some by my favorite bands. But when I heard Live Killers, I heard something I didn't hear very often - a live album that was unrivaled masterpiece. This recording captures Queen at their all-time high, right before their entry into the eighties and experiments with musical trends of the day ultimately killed their American popularity. The band creates a double LP of their finest songs - most of which are the group's hard rockers. And on this album, they are performed with the sort of energy you'd expect ONLY from Queen live. There really are no weak points on this album, and many of the songs are equal to their studio counterparts in terms of sheer quality - in many cases even exceeding them! Among the album's highlights are the opener, which is an alternative version of We Will Rock You that puts the classic original version to shame, a medley of intertwined shorter versions of many of the band's mid-late seventies hits, and a drastically-lengthened Brighton Rock, complete with guitar solo, which kills its studio counterpart dead. Most of the band's classics up to the time of release are performed here, and there are no weak moments. The only real flaws with this album are the shoddy production and the fact that some of Freddie Mercury's language between two of the songs was bleeped out. Still, these flaws are very minor, and ultimately, this stands as Queen's finest hour live.
Queen's albums were recently reissued and remastered, and this one is no exception. Unfortunately, unlike the studio material, this album didn't get any bonus material. Since the entire concert had to take up two discs and only fills each of them just over the forty-minute mark, some bonus cuts from the era would have been nice bonuses. I also wish the record company would have made more of an effort to clean up the production. Still, these flaws don't change my views of the album.
Live Killers does exactly what it claims it does - it kills. This album is THAT good. If you're a Queen fan and you're thinking of getting a live album, but you only want to get one, this one is your best bet. It captures the band at a height in their career no other live release does. Really, I can't say a whole lot else without starting to ramble. This is Queen's finest hour live. Five stars. Very highly recommended.
