Expose your bored daughters to the toxic combination of heavy-metal death fantasies, punk-rock nihilism, violent rap misogyny, and fuck-me feminism, and Kittie is what you get. This band belies the notion that the only rock from Canada is either by hollow-voiced sirens or is over-intellectualized prog-rock. The fact that all of the band's members are still in high school is almost incidental, as Spit contains a maturity and insight, not to mention a musicianship, not usually ascribed to the under-21 set. Consider the lyrics to "Paperdoll," which addresses stereotypical images of women: "They try her on for size / She fits nice / One size fits all...." All four members are strong musicians, but special notice must be paid to lead singer Morgan Lander, who whispers kitten-soft one second and lets loose an ear-shattering howl the next. Kittie sucks it's annoying & it gives me a huge headache........2006-11-22

This band sucks really bad it's worst than hearing jonathan davis trying to sing with anger and issues. The lead vocalist (who i can't stand) sounds like she's nagging out loud with anger and the group plays terrible with their guitar and bass. I don't consider this metal at all it's even worse using this as a drinking coaster (which I don't need) that will increase your head ache. 0/5 stars

Kittie - Spit.......2006-06-08

For once something from Canada doesn't suck. In Kittie's debut album "spit" we get to see the other side of the gender coin and watch 4 women show the men what's up. Although Kittie might not be the most original band in the universe, It was nice to get a change in the usual stuff that was on the radio at the time. Aside from my hometown girl metal band (Babes in Toyland), I wasn't buying into women lead singers in heavy metal bands. This CD quickly shut my mouth about that. Since I first bought this CD, it has remained one of my favorites.

"Spit" as a whole is an emotionally disconnected kick to the crotch delivered by the sometimes sweet voiced and sometimes growling Morgan Lander (vocals/guitar), Fallon Bowman (guitar), Talena Atfield (bass) and Mercedes Lander (drums). This CD is 12 tracks of heavy guitars, low almost death metal like bass and double bass drum percussion with the occasional Slipknot-esque sampling.

Songs like "Spit", "Charlotte" and "Whore" give you their insight on mature subjects like men, relationships and rape. Normally, I don't like to do favorite tracks on the album or rate each song because I think it takes away from the album as a whole but my 2 top songs on this disc are "Brackish" and "Paper Doll". Brackish is one of the songs I referred to as very Slipknot-esque. A lot of sampling production there and it's probably the best track where Fallon Bowman does back up vocals. "Paper Doll" is just disturbing and creepy. There is a remix version of this song that made it to radio. Sorry but only the original version is on the album.

Overall, this is a very good CD. Very few CD's ever leave my rotation and this is one that has never left. For me personally, for an album to hang with me it's gotta be as good or close to Slipknot, System of a Down, Tool, anything from Slayer and old school Anthrax and Pantera. Yes I'm gambling high to even suggest that Kittie could hang with these great bands. I wouldn't necessarily say that they are the best band or even best girl band but, "Spit" is just that good of an album that the CD itself hangs with some of my other bands (talk about dancing around equality for men and women). Anyway, I give this album a 3.8 for its enjoyable, listenable style of metal.

kittie rulez!!!! this is heavy metal and feminism...what more could a woman ask for? this is really great music. makes you wanna go crazy. all the songs are great from start to finish but the best one is definitely brackish. kittie are some women who really know how to rock no doubt. so if you wanna listen to some real kick @$$ music. then pick this up...you wont be disappointed trust me.

I agree with Kenny, Kittie's "Spit" is an insipid pile of horse manure. Like most other bands in this genre, this CD is devoid of almost any thoughts of creativity or ingenuity, not to mention the vacuum that is left due to the lack of talent featured. All the lyrics are the hallmark of the proverbially angst type that are common to these bands. Why are you girls so angry? You signed a record deal with a major label! Shoot, you're lives must really suck. Do they have any idea how many bands (with actual talent) would do anything to get signed by a major record label? Obviously this band was manufactured to catch the nu-metal craze only they used four faux goth girls who could barely play their respective instruments. These girls try to play with the boys but they just can't make the cut. Oooh, power chords over simple drumbeats and inaudible bass topped off with crummy preteen lyrics sung by a woman that sounds like a hissing cat. Gee, count me out. Not recommended unless you are the slit my wrist and cry my heart out crowd whose suburbia lifestyle must really suck. Cry me a river. I guess this band could be so angry because they know how bad they are but I doubt it...

I have been listening to the Psychedlic Furs for about 25 years now, and only came across Love Spit Love after their brief incarnation had been and gone. This is a good album, although I would recommend Trysome Eatone over this. Stand-out songs are "Am I Wrong", "Codeine" and "More" - some of the other tracks seem to be trying too hard to be quirky. Having said that, anyone who is a fan of Richard Butler's unique vocal style and unusual, but often moving, lyrics (and I am one of those) will enjoy this album.

One of the great albums of the 1990's.......2006-07-10

Richard Butler left his milleu of the "beautiful chaos" New Wave of the Psychedelic Furs and delved into a more resonant and less synthetic sound with this, the premiere album of Love Spit Love. It begins with a sonic assault of guitars and drums with "Seventeen" and ends with the somber, thrumming and dream-like "More" and inbetween these songs are more truly beautiful, sorrowful, and wonderful songs than anything Richard Butler has done before. Songs like "Green", "Half a Life", "Change in the Weather" and "Superman" are all incredibly evocative, sometimes louder and sometimes softer but all are powerful. The highlights of the album lie with the one hit yielded from the album "Am I Wrong", which is a song which digs deep into regret and melancholy and romance and the lyrical and musical brilliance of "Codeine". This album is very reminiscent of the works of another truly great band R.E.M., and I can't help thinking that some of the inspiration for this album are from R.E.M. songs. Just looking at the titles of some of the songs: "Superman", "Green" and "Wake Up" (R.E.M. having a song called "Get Up"). Maybe it's just coincidence, but one way or the other, this is one of the best albums of the 1990's and is a must-have for any Richard Butler fan.

Simply said, this is a great album. With some strong influence from his early band, Psychedlic Furs, Richard Butlter rocks hard as probably one of the best frontmen of the 80's.

Richard Fortus (later to join Guns N Roses) replaces John Ashton on lead guitar, and, for some reason (probably legal or contractual), the band changes its name from "The Psychedelic Furs" to "Love Spit Love." Is Fortus an improvement? It's hard to say, but the first Love Spit Love album is not a heck of alot different than the Furs last ("World Outside"), and that's just fine.

This album maintains a certain consistency throughout. All of the songs are basically of similar quality, my favorites being "Superman," "Half A Life," "Am I Wrong," and "Green," but I could just as easily have named another four. And that's the problem. None of the tracks really distinguishes itself from the others, and, after about the 8th song, one wonders when it's going to end. Alot of the tracks meander on for about a minute too long, but, to repeat, the entire album is consistently decent. If I were to rate each song individually, I might give most 4 stars and a few three, but here, the sum of the parts are greater than the whole.

I recommend this album to all fans of the Butler brothers' former band, just don't expect another "India" or "Ghost In You."

For fans of eighties music, or those who simply enjoy finely crafted, lush sounds, the debut CD by Love Spit Love is a great choice.

I've been a long-time fan of the Psychedelic Furs, (my favorite Furs CDs are Forever Now and Mirror Moves). Some of the tracks on this disc are uneven, but I would consider the song "Am I Wrong?" as strong as anything that the Furs put out. I prefer the first Love Spit Love CD to the second one...so if you are only going to pick up one, I'd recommend starting here.

The nasal young man in black who fronted the Psychedelic Furs during the 1980-85 salad days haunts these grooves, but only as a reminder of lost glories. Richard Butler's meditations on life and the big stuff have grown wordy and oblique, while his faceless band is blandly competent. I really loved their debut. This one falls short as I do hear the formula. The songs are all safe and bland. A real shame. I also get sick of all bands singing about religion and people having souls. Sing about reality and drop the pretension. One to avoid.

Not Furgotten.......2005-12-06

Richard Butler seems to be back in bed with his Psychedelic mates, but I almost wish he'd give this band another shot. Now seemingly in the "Shame It's Out-of-Print" File, 1997's "Trysome Eatone" delivered nicely on the promise of the band's eponymous 1994 debut, essentially transporting and updating the Furs sound for a new generation. "Long Long Time" is an appropriately growling opener, while "Fall On Tears" is wistfully lovely in the same vein as "Am I Wrong" from LSL's first release. Most of the album features the acidic vinegar that's been missing from the Furs for quite some time, combined with a new wisdom-of-the-years showing through in Butler's lyrics. If he chooses to stick with his roots, so be it, but this is the most dynamic and interesting album Butler managed to record in the 90's.

Something for everyone.......2005-07-12

There is no question who is the sole driving force of this underrated album. Even the picture of the band on the CD sleeve gives it away: the blurry three band members standing in the background, with the crystal clear, androgynous Richard Butler in the foreground. On "Trysome Eatone," Richard's brother Tim is credited as a co-writer on only one song ("It Hurts When I Laugh") and is not listed as a member of the band in the credits (see also Oasis and The Kinks for brotherly discontent in rock bands).

In listening to this album, I think I finally understand why Richard Butler may have liked working with lead guitarist Richard Fortus (who later joined Guns N Roses) as opposed to John Ashton (lead guitarist of The Psychedelic Furs). Fortus simply is more versatile, especially on softer songs. However, they're both quite proficient at creating textured layered sound. But why didn't the Furs just add Fortus and go with two guitars?

"Trysome Eatone" is a very good album, with a wide variety of songs that successfully showcase the songwriting talent of Richard Butler. "Well Well Well," "Sweet Thing" and the Catherine Wheel like "More than Money" demonstrate how the band can rock with fuzzy distortion-like effects. For ballads, the band gives us "Fall On Tears," "7 Years," and "All God's Children," the latter of which may or may not be told from the perspective of a pedophile (I'm not sure about this though).

For straight forward rock, the first two songs are just fine: the Smithereens-sounding "Long Long Time," and "Believe." If you like something more strange and offbeat, give "November 5" a listen. In another words, there is something for all fans of Richard Butler and his two bands. Perhaps that's what Butler was thinking when he named this very fine album, which I hope isn't his last in either guise.

I saw this band live the year this record came out. . .I think it was 1997 in a little concert hall in Detroit. I went knowing only Richard Butler's older material from the Psychedelic Furs. It was AMAZING. They are increadable.

This album is amazing. . .track for track, the album moves you. Richard Butler is the only man cool enough make the phrase "well, well, well" sound good. How do you do that? I am sorry to see that this album is already out of print. Buy it used, buy it new if you can find it. It is so worth it. It is rare to see an eighties guy come in to a new era and still be relevant.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!.......2000-09-13

Having first put on the first LP (remember them) with headphones and mood enhancer in hand, and having my eardrums blown out by India, dancing like a fool to TALK TALK TALK, blessed to see them perform as a 6 piece, disenchanted for a bit like the rest after 'forever now', slightly uplifted with the release of 'all that money wants' (the single only), and appreciative of their attempts of the two final cd's of the Pfurs, i thought i would never hear that sound again. the lyrics are there, the music is different, yet so familiar without being the Pfurs. of course it's butler's voice that's jumps out first, then the sound to grab me, but it's the abstract lyrics, or the blunt truths about society and culture that are here to keep me. of course i may be full of crap, but it's what i like. i don't WANT the Pfurs back, i want this music to come out every three years like it seems to be..........i hope. this can be said of both of their cd's, both great and different from each other. i will be playing these for awhile.

Mussorgsky's four songs known collectively as Songs and Dances of Death make up 20 minutes of the most intense storytelling in 19th-century song. At first, Hvorostovsky's voice seems almost too beautiful, his sound almost too youthful to fill out these narratives, but his concentration and breath control are so sensational that we realize what he's up to. He's spinning us seductively into the spooky world of these songs, where Death converses in turn with the mother of a dying child, a young girl, an old peasant, and dying soldiers; Hvorostovsky nicely changes his tone for each song. The rest of the CD is equally fine, with two arias from Anton Rubinstein's The Demon particularly compelling. Quite an adventure! --Robert Levine

Out of my ever growing (15 recordings so far) Dmitri collection, this is one of the best, a cream of the crop CD, with a terrific selection of music, and the fabulous Siberian at his most intense and dramatic.
Recorded 9 years ago when he was 31, it is one of his earliest CDs, but from the start (listen to his amazing "Russian Romances" !), he sang with incredible maturity and vocal richness.

Valery Gergiev and the Kirov Orchestra provide perfect backing, with a good balance between orchestra and singer, lovely and lyrical for the melodious Tsar's Bride aria (my current favorite track), and with plenty of dazzle and muscle for the Moussorgsky pieces.
This is one of those CDs (and both Dmitri and Gergiev have a few of them), that captures the heart and soul of Russian music.

Russia's Best!.......2002-10-29

This is by far the most breathtaking interpretation of the Songs and Dances of Death by Mussorgsky you will ever hear! I have seen Hvorostovsky in concert twice and always yearn for more. His voice is just as incredible live. Every single aria on this disc is a jewell. You can feel the pathos and the agony of the Demon, the heartwrenching jelousy of Aleko, and the joyous abandonment of the singer in Nero. Hvorostovsky's voice is just as outstanding as Ghiurov's in his prime.
The choice of repertoire and Dmitri's interpretation makes this CD a must for those wishing to explore Russian opera. His impressive range allows him to sing at ease in both the baritone and bass tessitura. He will no doubt make an exciting Scarpia and an unforgettable Mephistophele (both Gounod's and Boito's)someday. I hope he considers these roles in the future!

The best russian performer.......2002-05-10

I want to say this: Dmitri is the best baritone in our days, but he is the best russian performer ever lived. You can hear all the fellings the song expresses, a beatiful, coloured voice with a magnificent sound. He is simply superb. The orchestra and the conductor are correct. Again, Dmitri is the most important presence in this Cd.

I couldn't agree more with Robert Levine and Stephen Ettinger's most informative reviews. Prior to purchasing this CD, I had read elsewhere that Hvorostovsky's upper register was in trouble on this album. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. Having now heard the album I can happily report that Dmitri's upper, middle AND lower registers are perfectly equalized, and I strongly urge any doubting critics to retire gracefully. For this is a magnificent album from one of the most exciting baritones of the last 25 years. It ranks alongside Hvorostovsky's CD of the Sviridov song cycle, Russia Cast Adrift, as a celebration of sheer individualism in singing. Both albums display the hallmarks of this wonderful singer - the dark and intensely concentrated sound, the extraordinary breath control and superb attention to the phrasing. Just 31 when he recorded the present CD, Hvorostovsky brings such insight to his singing that he puts most of his contemporaries to shame. This album demonstrates everything that great singing should be: dazzling vocalism combined with innate feeling for the words.

Always at his best in the Russian repertoire, Hvorostovsky has chosen this programme wisely. He covers a wide range of moods, starting out with the joyous Venetian's Song from Rimsky-Korsakov's Sadko, and moving through some highly melodic works from Borodin and Rubinstein before arriving at Rachmaninov's darkly compelling Ves' Tabar Spit from the opera Aleko. For the latter he employs a more sombre style than the lustier approach favoured by, say, Ghiaurov, but this sets the scene well for the Songs and Dances of Death that follow.

These are the showpieces of the album, and I have never heard them more memorably performed. The variety of colours in Hvorostovsky's voice are a revelation, but what makes these songs stand out is the way he manages to convey so many different characters and moods. I loved the humour of his drunken peasant in the Trepak, and at the same time was thrilled by the terrifying power of his Field Marshall in the final song. These are truly astonishing performances.

As always, Hvorostovsky is provided with great support from conductor Valery Gergiev, and the sound quality is remarkably warm and vibrant. An unforgettable release and a must-have for anyone who loves great singing.

Breathtaking!.......1999-11-24

This is my favorite Dmitri Hvorostovsky CD. Not only he included the famous Russian opera arias for baritone, but he also added the magnificent "Songs and Dances of Death" by Modeste Mussorgsky brilliantly arranged for orchestra by Dmitri Shostakovich. Originally, Mussorgsky composed this terrifying masterpiece for different voices singing each piece, i.e. one for bass, one for tenor, one for contralto. Shostakovich decided to arrange it for orchestra for the Prima Donna of Bolshoi and his good friend Galina Vishnevskaya. He also made the pieces grimmer, so to speak, with his booming rhythmic percussion and "ticking clock" strings. In her book, Galina Vishnevskaya contrasts Shostakovich's terror of death to Mussorgsky's faithful acceptance of it.

Hearing Dmitri sing "Songs and Dances" in his baritone key is somewhat of a revelation. Not having the benefit of soprano's flying vocal pyrotechnics, Dmitri chose to put all the terror he could muster in his singing. On "Trepak" he resorts to folk song's vivacity and in "Field Marchall" he sings the voice of Death with suffocating anger towards the living. The "Serenade" sparkles with warm seductive sound and "Lullaby" sounds as it is sang by two different voices. It is indeed spine-chilling.

The rest of the album is just as impressive. The Rimsky-Korsakov and Borodin selections are a part of Russian traditional baritone repertoire; Hvoristovsky approaches them with utmost seriousness and dedication. The Rubinstein and Rachmaninov arias are rare, the ones from "Demon" and "Aleko" used to be sang by basses or bass/baritones, for example Nicolai Ghiaurov and George London. But Dmitri is able to hit the low notes just fine, thereby fending off some critic's preposterous remarks about his lower range. Actually he manages to sound like a lyric basso, which is quite an accomplishment. And the breath control on "Na Vozdushnom Okeane" is nothing short of remarkable. Valery Gergiev brings his trademark intensity and imaginative reading to the music and the Kirov Orchestra is in top shape. Somehow I think that transposing the Mussorgsky selections for the baritone was his idea. Btw, Dmitri's singing idol, the great Fyodor Chaliapin recorded only "Trepak" out of the whole song cycle. Thus Dmitri's is, in a sense, finishing what Chaliapin had started. As always, the Philips sound is wonderful and spacious. The booklet is informative, but a serious listener may want to do some more research. Personally I longed for Cyrillic texts, but the translations are pretty accurate, so that those unfamiliar with Russian could get an overall understanding, which is absolutely essential for this fascinating material.

better get to scotland.......2007-03-18

This cd was difficult to obtain. I had to wait quite a while for it, but it was well worth the wait. It was also worth the money spent. She has a wonderful voice and is one oustanding pipe and whistle player. Then she does this series of 'mouth songs', traditional to her part of Scotland. She does three of them back to back which are amazing and so very fast. Looking forward to her next cd which is also out but not available on amazon yet.

Last night we went to go see Jimmie Dale Gilmore at the Old Town School of Folk Music. Someone named Amy Allison was opening.
Well..... Amy Allison just blew me away. How come I've never heard of her before? I loved every song she sang. No wonder Elvis Costello likes her! VERY clever songwriting, a beautiful and interesting voice, and great style. I'm sorry that I only picked up this CD on the way out. I now wish I had gotten all four. This is a fabulous record. Even though last night was Robbie Folks' 'Secret Country' this is really a finely crafted pop record. I was playing it while we were making dinner and my wife said 'Wow, this is really good.'
Amy is my new favorite singer!

more gems from a gem.......2006-07-21

There is a wonderous and deceptive ease that informs Amy Allison's very accomplished songcraft. Her rendering of heartache has wit and pathos, vulnerability, tenderness as well as bite. She has a great knack for coining or manipulating cliche without falling prey to banality. This disc's great title track is a good case in point. While this entire effort doesn't pack the same punch for me as either No Frill's Friend or the Maudlin Years there is plenty of effective melodies, unexpected turns of phrase and emotionally honest moments to make it clear she is one of her generations best songwriters. Speaking of great songwriters--her reading of her father's tune "Was" here is really lovely. Finally, the obligatory acknowledgement of the nasality in her voice and warning to those who can't hear the beauty in it: it's here, get real, get over it.

For your Ras Collection.......2007-07-10

This is a CD with a bunch of collabs with Ras. If you are already acquainted with Ras then no sweat...pick up this album, if not, you may wanna hold off and pick up his earlier albums and then buy this one. But all in all, this is CD is pretty tight. There is a song with Kool G. Rap that is blaze and then there's one with Talib Kweli, where T.K. comes off. But its worth buying.

Still light years ahead........2007-05-14

Just like anything you would hear from Ras Kass it is engaging and full of fire. This release makes everyone regret ever doggin' this muthaf***a. His skill is finally starting to be matched up with improved beats as well.

Mix Tape Of The Year Material!.......2006-09-17

In hip-hop mix tapes are usually hit or miss. And they tend to be miss, because even the best lyricists can't always pull of an album full of songs over recycled beats. And even the best ones, well you're still not getting a real album, so the lyrics and songs don't have the same impact, Ras is unquestionably, in my mind any ways, the best lyricist in the West. I have really slowed down my listening to newer hip-hop, well enough so to where I don't recognize a lot of the beats on here. I just know they are probably borrowed from other, real songs. As that is what makes a mix tape a mix tape. As far as guests, there are only a few, Ras & G-Rap absolutely distroy the mic on their colabo. Ras as always, is vicious on the mic beyond words. His wit and wordplay are unmatched by all by a few.

"I'm tryin' to snatch Alicia Keys Purse/so I can learn a womans worth" It's lines like this that make me love Ras so much as an emcee. Until his next full album drops, I would say hands down this is the best mix tape of 2006, go cop it!

Ras is the King of the West.......2006-08-14

Ras Kass has some of the most clever delivery on Revenge of the Spit. This mixtape is one of my favorites because of his use of Star Wars material in context to his environment. Ras lyrically compares himself to Anakin Skywalker on this mixtape and his delivery is as fierce as ever. While this is not Institutionalized (which is a classic) you should definately add this one to your collection.

Another Solid one from a great lyricist - maybe 4.5 stars.......2006-06-29

Rassy is back just 7 months since his last album/mixtape (his "Institutionalizd - 4.5 stars), and it's my 2nd favorite of the 4 Ras albums I Have (behind "Institutionalized"). With 23 or so songs/freestlyes, you get a lot of Ras on here. Of the 23 songs, 1 is a classic, 1 is almost a classic, about 15 are pretty good to real good, 2 I skip, and the others are average. Guests are on 11 songs, and are some big names as well as some unknowns. Production is handled by a lot of people. Just Blaze, Green Lantern, Cannon, XL, Da Riffs, J Classic, J Gambit, Dr. Dre, 9th Wonder, DJ Khalil, Yvette, Haph (Of da Ranjahz), and 3 or 4 I never heard of. A good album for his fans or fans of real lyrics to have in their collection.

Some truly hypnotic stuff here........2007-02-08

This was my introduction to the music of Karine Polwart and I think she is a superior talent, in terms of music and lyrics, with a singing voice to match. When she hits "the right notes" she sails right to the top. I can't keep some of her songs out of my head -- my favorite being the title track "Hole in the Heart". I also love Take Its Own Time, Baleerie Baloo, and I'm Gonna Do It All. The other songs are less interesting to me but the gems on this album are so good, they're worth it all. I also like this album better than her earlier "Faultlines". That's just my opinion.

A PHENOMENAL WORK.......2006-08-20

Karine Polwart's album Scribbled in Chalk is a phenomenal effort... Hole in the Heart is simply the best pure song I have heard this year; haunting music and words that no matter how many times I hear it, it just gets better.... A combination of a voice that sounds airy and delicate at first but resonates surprisingly strongly when called for; memorable, original melodies crossing over from the folk tradition to contemporary, lilting pop; lyrics that range from wry and insightful storysongs to imaginative poetry to love songs that have grown on me and wormed their way into my being and my every day thoughts so much so that I find myself recalling the album while working or driving.... Isn't that what good modern music and songwriting are all about?

I don't agree with the below reviewer's approach. If you want to judge an album you don't merely grab the inlay card, read the lyrics and that's that. It seems that's what she/he did. What about the music? I don't find the lyrics too trite anyway. Karine Polwart has a great voice and can write great songs. Nothing groundbreaking, of course, but it is a consistently enjoyable contemporary folk album.

a disappointment.......2006-06-07

Ahh, this is a real shame. I had heard such good things about Polwart and am really getting into the rich seam of folk music out there at the moment so was looking forward to hearing this.

Sadly the album is fairly run of the mill with only one or two songs of note. Lyrically it is cliche-ridden and borders on bad teen poetry at times:

'You ceased to mow the lawn ten years ago
You just wanted to see how your garden would grow
You abandoned the pruning shears and welcomed each weed
You permitted the soil to select its own seed'

If you think the above is the height of poetry then there is a strong chance you'll enjoy this album. I didn't.

The C Minor Piano Trio was composed in 1923 when Shostakovich was 17 years old and the most brilliant student at the Petrograd Conservatory. Shostakovich tried to avoid the sound of 19th-century piano trios and to create original music for a post-Revolutionary society.

The E Minor Piano Trio begun in 1943 immediately after Shostakovich had completed his 7th and 8th symphonies. The finale is grim and disturbing, using Jewish idioms as symbols of oppression and victimhood. The ending is still, like a mass grave.

In the final work, Seven Romances on Verses by Alexander Blok, the first three songs are accompanied by solo instruments, the next three by duets, and the last song by all three instruments playing together. In this recording the soloist is Joan Rodgers, one of Britainâ€™s best-loved singers.

The Beaux Arts Trio celebrated a highly successful 50th Anniversary Season in 2004-2005. Pianist and founding member Menahem Pressler and his colleagues, violinist Daniel Hope and cellist Antonio Meneses, continue to ignite overwhelming enthusiasm from audiences around the world.

Excellent Shostakovich recital.......2006-02-24

This is an excellent new release from the Beaux Arts Trio. Shostakovich's early and rarely heard Piano Trio #1 was written at age 17 while the composer was still a student. Extremely accessible and enjoyable, the music shows the composer's trademark wit and satire with none of the crushing emotional distress that imbues nearly every one of his mature masterpieces. The Piano Trio #2 is among Shostakovich's most anguished works. The intensity of Shostakovich's own 1946 recording with Oistrakh and Sadlo (essential listening despite the gritty sound quality) derives in large part from its fury and hysteria. This new Beaux Arts Trio recording approaches the work differently, adopting slightly more deliberate tempos that emphasize the gravity and despair of the occasion. There is less frenzy but more exploration of Shostakovich's wide range of dark shadows, and the drama is chillingly sinister. Listeners familiar with the Beaux Arts Trio will not be surprised by the superlative level of musicianship evidenced here. The players' individual contributions could easily be extolled at length, but the real joy of the group-in concert and on record-is the unbeatable sense of ensemble. The playing is inspired, organic, and intuitive from the first bar, but listen especially to the ominous piano chords in the Largo or the impassioned string duet in the central section of the finale (starting around 5'35). The Seven Romances are haunting and sparsely written, with extensive solo passages for each instrument. Joan Rodgers' singing elegantly conveys the work's desolation and sense of mystery. The whole disc is heartily recommended for the quality playing, choice of repertoire, and clarity of sound.

Brilliant.......2007-04-22

After hearing clips of the tracks from one of the 'Celtic Women' CDs, I felt as though I was listening to ready-made elevator music. In brilliant contrast, Julie Fowlis' new CD, especially the track "Hùg Air A' Bhonaid Mhòir", is a refreshing and a more true reflection of the wild Highlands and Islands of Scotland....kinda like Celtic music in the raw.
