Album Description
Astounding Eddie Hazel-dominated Funkadelic album (from 1973), remastered for the first time in 15 years from the original master tapes. This is probably the tightest and most accessible of Funkadelic's Westbound albums, featuring track after track of incredible music. The CD includes the original seven track album plus the sharp-as-tacks edit of the title track, released as a single, and the wonderful guitar duel of "Vital Juices", which was the B-side and continuation of "Red Hot Momma". In-depth sleeve notes from funk expert and series consultant Dean Rudland, including details of the band's history and the recording of this album. Full color booklet, which reproduces the classic sleeve art by Pedro Bell, as well as contemporary memorabilia, ads and photos. Westbound U.S.
Customer Reviews:
Good times funk album........2007-05-16
"Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts" is one of the best songs I've ever heard. This album is a great feel-good funk album with lots of funny improvs and great songs.
CAUTION! Truncated versions of some tracks.......2006-03-06
Note that this reissue has shorter versions of at least two key tracks. Both "I'll Stay" and "Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts" are each cut short by about three minutes. It's a real bummer for the serious P-funk fan... While the sound on this reissue is cleaner, the EQ seems soft and lacks the strong 'punch' of the previous issue of this title. I am unsure if this is a result of too much high end, not enough bass, or what... While the artwork is an improvement, the bonus tracks do not offer anything that was not already available on Music For My Mother.
This is an awsome album - however I cannot recomend this version... Seek out the previous issue. On Amazon this older listing does not include 'remastered' in the title (however the sound is great).
Great CD, One Major Screwup.......2005-12-12
Funkadelic is certainly an underrated band-And not only in the R&B world, but in the rock world as well. Regardless of the name of the band and the fact that you usually find them in the R&B or Soul section of the store, Funkadelic is actually a rock band, especially the early to mid-70s albums like this. You get some pretty rocking songs, guitar solos and even a tad of progressive rock. They easily earn a spot along side of any classic rock band from the 70s. Of course it's funky as well! Don't buy a Funkadelic album thinking it's gonna sound like the theme music to Shaft, but it's definitely got a groove to it. It's great to see these cds finally getting the remaster treatment coz some of the original cds sounded pretty bad. This particular album is excellent and a great intro to the band, unless of course you want the more dancey sound, then I'd suggest One Nation Under A Groove or Uncle Jam Wants You. I must give a warning to anyone who wants to ditch their original cd copy for the new remaster. Yes, it does sound better and there are a few bonus songs, but I was very disappointed when it got to track 3(I'll Stay) and the song ended halfway through! I remember this song being at least 3 minutes longer. This really bummed me out coz the whole song is good. Imagine listening to Time from The Dark Side Of The Moon and having it fade out halfway through. There is really no reason for this, it's totally unacceptable, and that is why I give this 4 stars and not 5. It is a 5 star album all the way for sure. Those not familar with the album won't be aware of anything, but fans will be like, "What the hell?". I mean, it's not like there isn't enough space on the cd, it's a 37 minute album to begin with. With minor edits(including the last song too actually) and two bonus tracks, it's now 38 minutes!! So you may not want to toss your old cd if you want to keep the entire song. Still a great album though.

Although these four Generation X folkies have all released albums on their own, their shared live performances have gone furthest in winning fans of chiefly acoustic, quasi-feminist confessionalists like the Story, Ani DiFranco, and Dar Williams. To their credit, Rose Polenzani, Erin McKeown, Jess Klein, and Beth Amsel harmonize together sweetly--as on Maggie Simpson's secular gospel tune "Hunger"--but they're just as likely to fall back on cloying vocal gimmicks (McKeown can sound like a Jeff Buckley imitator) as lay their hearts on the line. The four save the latter for their lyrics, though unless you're a twentysomething member of the disenchanted white middle class, you'll likely be puzzled or pained by lines like "I want to cut myself/ but it looks like it hurts a lot." Given the four's youth and energy, their song craft may yet catch up to their already apparent gifts as musicians and performers. --Roy Kasten
Customer Reviews:
The Fantastic Future of Folk Music.......2005-08-15
Beth Amsel, Jess Klein, Rose Polenzani, and Erin McKeown are all extraordinarily talented singer-songwriters, each with their own very distinct styles of writing and performing. Any fan of modern American folk music is unlikely to be disappointed in any of their solo albums, and this well-orchestrated collaboration is a fantastic display of the future of the genre.
Amsel's voice has been described by Daniel Gewertz of The Boston Herald as "simply one of the most beautiful on today's folk scene," and I'd dare anyone to try to prove him wrong. Her sultry, powerful voice, combined with stellar songwriting skills, truly make her talent stand out on this album.
Jess Klein and Erin McKeown are folk-rock heroes, performing their respective "hits" ("Little White Dove" and "Blackbirds") along with a selection of other fantastic and lesser-known songs. Both skilled far beyond their years, their songs are catchy and eminently approachable.
Rose Polenzani, with her girl-next-door sweetness and her earnest delivery, rounds out the quartet. She so easily channels your every female friend, girlfriend, and sister that one can't help but adore her from the very start. Her voice blends effortlessly as a stellar backup, but it stands out quite well on its own on each of Polenzani's songs, most especially the catchy and powerful "You Don't Know," on which she receives a capable assist from Erin McKeown's guitar.
What other reviewers might view as "vocal gimmicks" on the album, I see as unique and eminently pleasant styles of performance. If you never got a chance to see Voices on the Verge perform live, then you missed out on a truly great concert - but do yourself a favor and buy this album anyway. You may not know it yet, but these women are four of your new favorite artists just waiting to be discovered.
Soulful, Thoughtful Songwriting.......2004-12-11
I picked this up a couple years ago after I heard an interview with them on NPR. It's one of my must-haves in the car and at work. Their songwriting is rich, and their singing is utterly engaging.
Excellent work.......2004-11-29
This is one of the CD cases that stays on top of the CD player most of the time because the CD simply stays in the CD player. Fabulous live sound, tight harmonies, quirky compositions, never predictable. I LOVE this CD. Great work. It has been inspirational to my own a cappella group, The Muses. www.ashevillemuses.com
3100 miles of listening pleasure!.......2003-01-06
On a recent road trip, my husband asked if I had anything "decent" in my van that we could listen to. He asked me for Sinead O'connor, but I assured him he would enjoy these female vocalists equally... Fast forward to 3000 miles later, and he was still popping in this cd whenever the engine started up. Back at home, he is still humming the tunes (as is my 7 year old) around the house. If you find that it's hard to find a CD that pleases everyone, try this little number out. My family has vastly different listening tastes, but on this one we agreed... for 3100 miles of listening and beyond!
4 parts make a whole........2002-02-27
I bought this CD as I already owned Jess Kleins' "Draw Them Near" and Rose Polenzanis "Anybody" so I thought I'd take a chance. Boy I'm so glad I did. 4 singers with different styles when they get together make a perfect whole. Each sing lead vocals on 3 tracks and are perfectly backed up by the others. It is unfair to pick stand-out tracks as they all have something to offer, however "Blackbirds" and "Heaven Release Me" are songs I can't get out of my head. Buy this CD, you will not regret it.
Since I purchased this I have managed to get Erin & Beth's solo CDs' - Well worth listening to.

The Call is dead; long live the Call. The quartet of Oklahomans, based in California, came out of the art-rock faction of early-'80s new wave. The Call allegedly broke up in '91, but Michael Been, the band's primary singer-songwriter, has recruited two of his old bandmates (drummer Scott Musick and guitarist Tom Ferrier) for his debut solo album, On the Verge of a Nervous Breakthrough. The old strengths and weaknesses remain. When Been and his mates get a good groove going, as they do with "When You're with Me" (powered by the old Gang of Four rhythm section) and "Us," the heavily compressed guitar-and-synth sound and heavily echoed vocals have a hard-to-resist obsessive quality. When the rhythm falters, though, the portentousness and vagueness of Been's lyrics become impossible to ignore. --Geoffrey Himes
Customer Reviews:
One great song.......2007-03-24
The last song on this album ("To Feel This Way") is very beautiful and moving. It was well worth ordering the album just to hear that one song. The rest of the album is just irritating noise.
better than good. great. a classic........2004-04-16
ignore any negatives you read about this record. michael been is the man. all the passion and drive of The Call without the R&B influence...just straight-ahead hard rock with soaring vocals and meaningful lyrics. if you want to hear some 19 year old kid sing (or 'rap') about whatever is on his tiny mind, this record is not for you. if your soul longs for cleansing, powerful, spiritual rock, then pick it up right away. you'll be glad and satisfied.
It's hard to find Mike underneath all the production.......2003-10-01
Michael Been's band, the Call, was compared often to U2 during the 80's. Not so much because of their sound, but because of the approach -- passionate, anthemic rock with lyrics that touched obliquely upon political or Christian themes. Well, if Call albums like "Let the Day Begin" or "Red Moon" were roughly analogous to "The Joshua Tree" or "Rattle and Hum", then this album is Been's "Pop" or "Achtung, Baby".
This is not necessarily good. The Call's albums are full of straightforward, excellent playing, but that was always at the service of Michael's heartfelt vocal delivery. Despite the presence of 2/3 of the rest of the Call and their roadie Ralph Patlan on drums and guitars, Been went for a different way of working here. Like U2's "Pop", the songs are drenched with heavy, distorted guitars which are very grating. Furthermore, the vocals are also treated to effects and distortion which obscure Been's usual realistic emotionalism. His lyrics seem rather introverted and psychological this time aroud, only adding to the dark atmosphere. To complicate matters, a cover of the Yardbirds "For Your Love" is given the same treatment. It adds nothing to the original, and was obviously a desperate attempt to get some airplay -- the only time Been stooped this low.
The contrast between all this and his usual approach comes at the end of the album, with two versions of the last track, "The Way I Feel." The first was evidently recorded two years earlier than the rest of the album, and features a haunting, clear vocal accompanied by a simple keyboard, much like a latter day Call track. Then comes a version with those weird guitars cranking in the background, and the difference is striking.
The songwriting is still as strong as ever, but this attempt to play with alternative rock sounds distracts from Been's articulate, intelligent music. It just doesn't work. It's by far the weakest thing he had yet done, and later made another Call album. Only recommended for real Call-heads. Others should look for "Let the Day Begin", "Red Moon" or "Reconciled" first.
The Call-indeed, a little rougher edged...........2003-01-28
This album is quite a switch from the traditional Call sound; not so much elusive Southern Rock as their older stuff, and much harsher than subsequent albums-but, hey! It's a Michael Been solo album, so it does not necessarily need to fit into the Call's repertoire. However, it does indeed fit well.
Michael Been's lyrics are, as always, quite fantastic and esoteric, meaning they cause you to think a bit. 'Us' would be a triumphant song for any band, and it is indeed true that Dave Allen from 'Gang of Four' fame does appear on this recording, bringing with him his signature bass style. The album is a bit more rugged than other Call albums, but is quite enjoyable and well done. Certainly not to disappoint any Call fan.
Solo album or The Call?.......2001-11-13
Appearances indicate that this is a solo album by The Call's lead man Michael Been, but as the Amazon.com review notes, 2/3's of The Call's lineup plays on this record. "On the verge..." sounds like The Call updated for the modern rock era. In places this record sounds harsh on the ears, and I can't help but wonder what it would sound like if they had a bigger production budget with which to work. Even so, you can't help but appreciate an artist who respects his audience enough to write honest, thought-provoking lyrics. A very solid outing.
