To gauge the magnitude of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's popularity in his native Hawaii, consider this: following his death in 1997 (at age 38, attributed to his profound obesity), Kamakawiwo'ole's body lay in state in the state capitol, only the second person to receive such an honor. Kamakawiwo'ole's appeal lies in his love for prestatehood, precondominium Hawaii and the expressiveness of his gently passionate voice, which can float through higher registers with an ease that brings Johnny Mathis to mind. Several selections ("Ka Pua U'i," "White Sandy Beach of Hawai'i," the sun-kissed "La 'Elima") feature Kamakawiwo'ole in a traditional mood, using only his ukulele to adorn the charm of his native lyricism. Others, such as the Jimmy Buffett-like "Maui Hawaiian Sup'pa Man" add playful contemporary touches that suit Kamakawiwo'ole's style. Most touching are the string-backed laments that open and close the album, "Hawai'i '78 Introduction" and "Hawai'i '78," initially a reflection on his father's death, later on the passing of Hawaii's native culture. Best known is his medley "Somewhere over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World," which played over the closing credits of the film Meet Joe Black. --Terry Wood

Album Description

There's a smart balance of traditional Hawaiiana and contemporary tunes on this CD. There's heart-tugging warmth along with unexpected chuckles. The end result is a candid, honest reinforcement of his vocal breadth.

This is my second CD by IZ I will keep collecting his music as long as he keeps producing it. It offers a taste of pure Hawaii. Don't miss it.

5 out of 5 stars Breath of fresh air!.......2007-07-28

Iz and his music are truely a breath of fresh air in a world full of cookie cutter music. He's a master of the ukulele, and has a voice as sweet and clear as a warm Hawaiian day. "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" is beyond perfection. It fills the soul with joy and lifts you above the clouds...above the rainbow. A must for the Hawaiian music collector.

5 out of 5 stars Takes you to a happy place.......2007-07-23

I got this CD mainly for "Somewhere over the Rainbow", but do enjoy the entire range of songs. Would recommend it, however, I probably will not buy any more of his stuff; a little goes a long way.

5 out of 5 stars You need this classic for your Hawaiian music collection.......2007-07-21

This guy has an amazing voice and this album shows it off very well. Contains the "Over the Rainbow" version seen on TV and many other songs. It is also a "political" statement in music. Iz was anti-US and favored Hawaiian independence. But, still an amazing album and music.

5 out of 5 stars I love this cd!.......2007-07-20

Never one to care much about Hawaaian music, these songs by IZ blew me away.I first heard his singing of Somewhere over the rainbow on a tv commercial. Had to buy the cd and I wasn't disappointed. His voice is soothing and sad and mellow. My favorite is Over the rainbow.

I know that is where IZ is now in the land of lemon drops and bluebirds. He is happy and singing his songs to the angels. Buy this cd and you will be very glad you did!

3 out of 5 stars It was GOOD but not WONDERFUL.......2007-07-31

I have almost all of IZs albums and that's the reason I bough this one. It was then, that I realized that it was "arranged" with a big orchestra. I guess it is OK to listen to because his voice and the orchestrations are nice on their own, but I'm not crazy about it because I cannot think they necessarily go toghether well. It is probably just me, but I like his voice and his ukalele sound much better. It is still GOOD, don't get me wrong...but it's just my preference. But I loved the presentation...the cover is beautiful!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful World.......2007-07-28

The music on this CD is absolutely wonderful. In my opinion, Iz is one of the all time greats, especially for Hawaiian music. I have all of his CD's, and play them over and over. I recommend his albums to everyone. I think once you listen, you will be hooked. Happy Listening.

I LOVE IZ'S MUSIC! HE SING FROM HIS HEART TO YOUR SOUL. I HAVE MOST OF THE SONGS THAT ARE ON THIS CD HERE ALREADY BUT THIS CD HERE HAS HIM SINGING WITH AN ORCHESTRA. AHH THE MAGIC MIXERS OF OUR TIME. THE ORCHESTRA / IZ WHAT MORE CAN YOU WANT! BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL... A GIFT FROM GOD

1 out of 5 stars WHAT!!.......2007-07-23

Why ANYONE would feel the need the "remake" or add to the music of IZ is way beyond me (other than the obvious - $$$$). Skip this one and pick up any one of his previous albums - Trust me, they're all you'll ever need!

4 out of 5 stars it is a good cd .......2007-07-22

I think that this is a good cd with the music of IZ, it has somewhat of a softer feeling to it.

The artist behind Facing Future, the top-selling Hawaiian album of all time, the late Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwo'ole was possessed of a voice so sweet, so tender, and so lovely that it continues to deeply stir those who hear it long after he died. Lovingly assembled and notated by producer Jon de Mello, Alone in IZ World is comprised of both alternate versions of Kamakawio'ole's best-loved songs as well as tracks never before heard by the public. The latter category includes versions of "Hanohano No Na Cowboy," the playfully incomplete opening on "Mona Lisa," and "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star," on which IZ takes a rare turn at harmonizing with himself. In light of his premature passing, devastatingly beautiful alternate cuts of "Starting All Over Again" and "In This Life" are especially poignant. And "Over the Rainbow"--IZ's renditions were heard in Meet Joe Black and Finding Forrester--may never again sound so pure. --Paige La Grone

5 out of 5 stars True Hawaiian.......2007-07-30

If you like Hawaiian music, IZ is the man. I love his renditions of Hawaiian and traditinal music. He has a beautiful voice. "Over the Rainbow",in his unique style, is a definite favorite. I play his CD's over and over again - a vicarious trip to the islands.

5 out of 5 stars one of a kind!.......2007-07-28

Iz was truely one of a kind. A multi talented singer and song writer, who can pull you into his music and surround you with the warmth of the islands. I highly recomend this CD. Great Hawaiian music that will be enjoyed by all.

4 out of 5 stars Alone In IZ World is worth a look.......2007-07-05

This was the first Israel Kamakawiwo'ole cd I had listened to. I think despite the fact that at least one of the songs (Mona Lisa) wasn't finished it's an excellent CD. The song "Somewhere over the Rainbow" is a beautiful Hawaiian rendition of an old Classic. The CD is lighthearted, fun, and introspective at times, offering a track with audio from Iz talking about his battle with obesity (something hardcore Iz fans might enjoy). The word: if you have all of his CD's and love IZ get this one, if this is your first purchase, buy another and work your way up to this one later.

5 out of 5 stars IZ.......2007-06-28

This is a special type of recording that not everyone would care for. It is what I would call a Kamaaina type of CD; i.e., if you like down home Hawaiian style, it's great. Having lived in HI for over 18 yrs, I really dig it. The reason I say this is that it's the type of recording that's rather "off-the-wall." There's false starts, talking and just plain uke strumming and picking up words as he goes along, but it's real. These are recordings as they actually happened rather than having been rehearsed. For those that have sat around a bonfire eating pig and poi, listening to uke players, I'm sure they will enjoy it!

5 out of 5 stars Relaxing and beautiful.......2007-06-27

The tracks on this album are beautiful from Iz's rendition of "Mona Lisa" to the now familiar "Over the Rainbow". What is most haunting is hearing Iz speaking on several tracks, especially his views about death and losing his family members. A definite must have.

Album Description

After 5 to 6 years on a recent worldwide Mountain tour, we were asked to record a new CD. During the touring Leslie heard Neil Young's rendition of Blowin in the Wind and decided to perform it acoustically at our shows. The reaction was clearly overwhelming leaving Les and I to a serious look, again, at the musical and political significance of Bob Dylan's repertoire. I personally felt that Leslie's vocal power would match the power in Dylan's lyrics. The melodies simple and direct would match Leslie's lyrical guitar expressions. The drum feels were spontaneous and most of the basic tracks were first takes in the studio. Personally, I just tried to punctuate the hell out of the song. It took about 3 years to contemplate exactly what Dylan material we would decide to record Mountain style. The final result is Mountain CD MASTERS OF WAR. Corky Laing

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Made for the money.......2007-08-01

This sounds like it was recorded in a single session. Leslie used to be a decent player. I guess that if you can't do your own songs, re-doing (poorly) songs from the Master is the only way to go. I hope Bob never has to listen to this garbage.

5 out of 5 stars MOUNTAIN: Masters of thier Craft!.......2007-08-01

Mountain Is and always was Leslie West(gtr.), Corky Laing (Drms), and would be Felix Papalardi (bass) ,except for mystery shrouded circumstances involving his 83 murder, Ritchie Scarlett is very able in his bass chores. Mountain is not an oldies act, Mountain has always been a viable and powerful touring band and has had the occasional release be it the band moniker
or Leslie West name. An outstanding recent release (2002) would be Mystic Fire, but this is not an exception. So when I heard the Mountain was going to release a set of Bob Dylan interpretations, I was confident that it would prove to be a strong record. Mountain has not let me or any of their fans down with this new release, Masters of War. Fans of His Bobness will also be pleased with the power and versatility of the selections and performances included here.
Leslie West has a strong and powerful voice that only seems to get more intense with age, Corky always been the Canadian master of the large Kit, and Ritchie is an appropriate colleague on the deep end. This record includes two songs featuring long time Mountain fan/friend Warren Haynes, only adding to the magic contained within theses grooves. A complete unnecessary addition of Ozzy star power on the title track, shows that the trading of verses with Leslie is more of the Joke Ozzman than the Black Sabbath powerhouse of yore, and Leslie shines w/o the help of reality TV debasement.
Corky ups the ante with a neo-urban rap version of `Like a Rolling Stone', which features only him accompanied only by counter rhythm minimalistic drums.
A separate heavy and then light version of `Blowing in the Wind' serves to underscore the versatility of this set.
Other selections include a molten version of `Gotta Serve Somebody' and `Seven Days', songs not usually included in Dylan tribute packages. This record is a tangible slab of Rock Rage and Sensitivity. This collection is a MUST HAVE for YOUR collection. Mountain Lives!...Mountain Rules!
-Brother Rauk Zenta

4 out of 5 stars Well who would have guessed.......2007-07-31

Upfront I'm a big fan of Leslie + Corky. I'm a guitarist who plays a Hamer P90 special (can you say Les Paul Jr.) and a Stienberger through a Marshall stack... wonder who I sound like?
I've listened through the album three times. It is a superb recording. Every note from every instrument is audible and correctly balanced. Mr. Laings take of Like a Rolling Stone (vocals and drums only) is fantastic and very much caught my notice. Leslie's accoustic playing should be featured more often - his note selection is excellent - the man is a far better musician than he gets credit for. Ozzie's contribution did nothing for me but it is short and he only appears once. Warren H. contribution isn't anything Leslie couldn't have done on his own - not bad but at the same time not remarkable. Mr. Aronsons contribution on the bass is very good as is Mr. Scarlets. This is a good album but be forewarned it is not Mountain of the climbing era and it isn't a bootleg - this is the real deal by some serious folks and well worth a purchase.

Their second album and first for Interscope is almost wholly brilliant. Like Mogwai, Sigur Ros and a dozen others, TVOTR excels at making slowly-evolving tunes with vaguely anthemic choruses and lots of loud-soft dynamics. Unlike virtually any of those other bands, TV on the Radio mix a genuine and actual songwriting ability with their knack for finding sounds that appear to be "new." This record is crisper-sounding and incorporates more dance-based elements, but it's essentially a pop album. While the lack of the free web-released "Dry Drunk Emperor, a tribute to President Bush, is initially a bummer, the album percolates with enough pre-apocalyptic tension to satisfy anyone. In a Prince-pitched falsetto, the group sings "I was a lover/ Before this war," While throughout, the combination of melody and invention is always pitch-perfect (well, except on "Province" and "Let the Devil In," those songs sort of suck.) People of Earth: please make this band into total superstars and buy several copies of their album: one for the car, another for the office, etc. What we really need in our popular music is more weirdness, and more truth. --Mike McGonigal

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Play it loud!.......2007-07-11

Start at the first track, with its unstoppable beat, WILD horn hook, and impassioned vocals. If you make it through that without 1) blowing your speakers, 2) hitting the repeat button, or 3) running in the opposite direction, the rest of the album will reward you. It takes a few listens to unfold, but once you "get it" you won't want to stop hearing it.

1 out of 5 stars You see, I tried, then I REALLY tried.......2007-06-02

I have to completely agree with what "Unlistenable" (callahan) had to say about this record. I have given it a try on long road trips, blasting on my home stereo, with headphones, etc. I don't get it. I WANTED to "get it". Even after "not getting it", I tried again.
I had read/heard so much about this album, that I figured it would be a pleasure/treasure.
Basically, it sucks!. No cohesion whatsoever-none.
"Wolf Like Me" is the ONLY stand out track, likley because it actually has some form of melody/riff. It is a very, very good song to add to any compilation you may be making for your summer mix. Do yourself a favor, buy THAT track on ITunes and skip the rest! The ONE STAR RATING IS FOR THAT TRACK ALONE!
P.S. I disagree with that other reviewer's comment likening this to OK Computer as being overrated too. THAT disc has plenty of great musical moments going on!

4 out of 5 stars Different but good..........2007-05-26

I gave this album a couple of listens and was glad I did. It's original but I am not someone who gives bad music a pass just because it is different - it has to be good too. I am a little surprised that "Wolf Like Me" was the first single since that song seems sort of flat and boring to me, but "I Was a Lover", "Hours" and "Let the Devil In"(which was one of the only songs the Amazon reviewer hated) were all very good. And I can't believe everyone isn't raving about "A Method" which to me is an incredible tune(was someone channeling Brian Wilson?) that's worth the price of the album all by itself.

4 out of 5 stars Not pop music.......2007-05-13

This is a refreshing change from the garbage the music indusrty is feeding us today. Good stuff!

5 out of 5 stars Stunningly original.......2007-05-12

I understand that this album might not be for everyone. Even if I didn't like this however, I think I'd be forced to give it five stars just based on how unique this album is. Say what you want, but there is nothing out there that sounds quite like TV on the Radio.

But I do think this is an amazing album of incredible depth. It's a challenging and complicated masterpiece that must be unveiled over time to appreciate its full scope and vision.

TV on the Radio are one of the few bands out there right now that is committed to pushing music forward rather than resting on its laurels or giving themselves over to popular trends or familar sounds.

This is an album for people who truly appreciate avant-garde music and are looking for something that is remarkably fresh and exciting to listen to.

If you are looking for something more familar, I would look elsewhere.

Album Description

Released in 1996, Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, better known as IZ is much a part of Hawaii as the beautiful blue oceans. Every cut on this album you can hear the power and majesty that is IZ, which gets into the listeners' heart and soul. "In Dis Life" serves-up a mix of Hawaiian language standards, two hit tunes from local artists, several fresh new songs and a Jawaiian remake of "Starting All Over Again". A must have if you are a fan of IZ's other material.

IZ passed away but the recordings he left behind capture the real essence of Hawaii. All his albums are outstanding

5 out of 5 stars IZ.......2006-06-29

We discovered Iz while in Hawaii this past January. We have purchased all 6 of his CD's and all three of his DVD's. He has a beautiful voice, sense of humor, and love of his heritage and Hawaii. I just wish he was still with us to share himself. He is singing to God now and what a beautiful sound that must be. Thanks Iz for giving us your love and appreciation of Hawaii and what it means to the Hawaiian people.

5 out of 5 stars I'd say by far his best album........2006-05-14

Though all of his albums are recommended, no Israel Kamakawiwo'ole collection is complete without "In Dis Life." This album, I believe, is his best ever, despite the fact that it doesn't have his "Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" medley on it. If you are looking for that particular song buy "Facing Future."

As for the selections on this CD, I particularly enjoy the title song, "Wai'alae," and his rendition of the Hawaiian Style Band's "Living in a Sovereign Land." The contemporary tunes show a different side of him. "'Opae E" has been a favorite of mine forever. I also like his jazzy rendition of "Aloha Ku'u Pua" and his medley of "Na Ka Puio" and "Keyhole Hula," otherwise known as "Kauoha Mai."

The only song that I think is just okay is "Yokozuna," at least for now, but maybe it'll grow on me eventually. I don't hate it though, just not one of my favorites. Maybe that's just because I would choose Hawaiian language songs over contemporary if I had to make a choice.

Please get this CD as well as all his others.

5 out of 5 stars Hawaii's Favorite Braddah.......2006-04-22

I remember the year Braddah Iz died,I live in Waianae and it was a shock to the people of Hawaii.I remember the day of his funeral his ashes were scattered out to sea with his brother Skippy, people came from all over the island traffic was horrid, but it was for the love of the music this one man brought. I have lived most of my life in Hawaii, and have gotten to known the Hawaiian culture and music,my children are Hawaiian and have been blessed to been brought up with this man's music.Braddah Iz will always be apart of the Hawaiian aina, and culture and his music is still listened too this day........ God Bless Braddah Iz...and his family.

5 out of 5 stars Brings a smile everytime.......2004-11-09

My wife and I heard IZ for the first time while on our honeymoon back in June 1997 while on a Helicopter Ride over Kauai. The pilot was playing his music over our headset as background music. At the time we didn't even realize how nice the music was and didn't think to ask the pilot who was singing.

Several days later we were in a shop and once again I heard his voice over the stores speakers and had to have the CD. This is classic Hawaiian music that brings me back to Hawaii every time I hear his music...and that is far since I live in New York.

Several years later I looked him up on the Internet and was heartbroken to learn he passed away...a week after we left Hawaii. I have purchased every CD as well as DVD's that have become available.

IZ died with a huge heart and the world has lost a great singer that believed in Hawaii and the land that was meant to be. You would be surprise to hear how many times you hear his music in movies, commercials and shows. A performer that will be remembered forever.

5 out of 5 stars Desert Island Disc!.......2007-06-20

This sacd is positively stunning. I am young. I was raised on gizmos, gadgets and hi-tech this and that...and for the life of me I can't understand how these engineers back in the 50's and 60's produced such astoundingly detailed recordings. With two or three mics for the hall and some tube equipment and wham...there you have it...a recording of impressively powerful pieces of music with enough separation and detail within the mix to keep the listener busy for hours and hours on end. That and the emotional wallop packed by this recording is second to none. Even if you have copies aplenty of Pictures, or Night on..., such as I do myself, please do not hesitate to pick up this recording as it is worth every dime. If you are looking for an interesting counterpoint to Reiner's reading of Pictures or Night pick of Jose Serebrier's recording on Naxos.

5 out of 5 stars Great way to exercise.......2007-06-13

Such great music. Exercise and listening
to this one is a great combination.
Time seems to fly by and before you know
it. Times up!

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2007-04-02

How can something older than me sound so good? The recording is top notch. Dont be fooled into thinking it is "just stereo", the ambience of symphony hall comes thru as though it were recorded in surround. Exquisite detail and perfect tempo. Timpani has realistic impact. And all the other music with Pictures makes this a real bargain!

5 out of 5 stars Strauss and Mussorgsky.......2007-03-24

They sound good, without the 'edge' often associated with CDs. CDs are a Fourier Transform of the analog source - that is to say a subset of it.

4 out of 5 stars Hybrid SACD Mussorgsky: Pirctures at an Exhibition, Night on Bald Mountain.......2007-01-14

Great value. Great performances. On my krell sacd player, I found small differences between the SACD layer and the regular. The recordings are outstanding. Consider the price and that this is a 2 lp set, this is a deal.

4 out of 5 stars It's IZ, what more needs to be said?.......2007-05-12

Since I am not from Hawaii I don't profess to identify with the political and cultural aspects of IZ's music, so all I can really say is that I find IZ's music just plain nice to listen to, especially when its just him and his uke. Need to relax, need to kick back and drift away to the Islands then this will do it for you. Get rid of the pills and pick up a dose of IZ to calm the tensions of the day. Of course you'll have to resist to go out and purchase a one way ticket to Hawaii.....or will you?

5 out of 5 stars So long, Beethoven!.......2006-10-24

A classical music buff, & up until August had never heard of IZ. In an airport in Botswana, awaiting a plane to Johannesburg (delayed for several hours), I observed a distinguished-looking man, sitting completely relaxed, with a smile on his face, listing to his iPod. Finally, out of boredom I commented about how un-stressed he seemed to be; he promptly passed over his earphones. WOW! It was Iz singing "Over the Rainbow" (a song I am completely and thoroughly sick of!) Of course, his version was familiar and for the first time in years, I loved the song. Unfortunately, I then forgot the artist's name. Thank goodness it came back to me.

Bought this CD at probably the last Tower Music Store in the nation, along with 15 others (all classical) and can't stop playing it. Right now I'm in the process of buying this album for a friend, along with all the rest of his collection.

So long, Beethoven! (Not really, but this is a whole new wonderful addition to my listening life.) I think IZ belongs in every top-notch music portfolio.

3 out of 5 stars Hit or Miss.......2006-05-07

Odd that Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (formerly a member of Hawaiian Renaissance band, the Makaha Sons of Niihau, and outspoken vocalist in the Hawaiian Sovereignty movement) would hook up with John DeMello, the son of Hawaiian music's whitest bandleader -- Jack DeMello (the latter of whom orchestrated ultra easy listening records in the '60s). Putting that aside, this album is really hit or miss for me.

When Israel is doing his beachboy-style songs (loose, comedic, played solo on the ukulele or with minimal overdubs) he provides a glimpse of the old Hawaiian spirit so lacking in contemporary Hawaiian music. Which is to say that most present-day Hawaiian music is so serious, that it almost sounds like Contemporary Christian Music. Israel's versions of "Kamalani" and "I Ke Alo O Iesu" are slick, sappy and overwrought with sentimentality. In other words, they are the opposite of the loose, mellow and cool sound inherent to beachcomber cuts like "Tengoku Kara Kaminari" and "Theme from Gilligan's Island."

Yeah, that's right... this strong native Hawaiian voice tackles the theme from Sherwood Schwartz's tacky, '60s go-go, beachcomber television show (starring TV beatnik Bob Denver). But in doing so, Kamakawiwo'ole puts his own spin on the song, first bringing an oceanside humor that was not on the original theme recording for the show's credits. But halfway through "Theme from Gilligan's Island," Israel turns the song into a loose politcal statement, as he reminds the listener that he has no need to come back from THIS island... back to a place where there are cars, pollution and government corruption. In that sense, the song connects on many levels, even though it seems like a silly idea at first glance.

"E Ala E" -- the opening track on this album -- is a fiercly political cry that works as a personal plead for Hawaiian civil rights and sovereignty over their own land. The field recordings of Hawaiian demonstrators marching and chanting in the background gives the song another layer of depth.

All in all, there's enough goodness going on here to get you past the sappy material. But there are better Kamakawiwo'ole albums out there, including his entire back catalogue with the Makaha Sons of Niihau, plus IZ's first two solo albums.

5 out of 5 stars Relaxing Enjoyment.......2006-04-17

This is a beautiful combination of traditional Hawaiian and contemporary tunes, both tender and upbeat. I purchased this CD when visiting Hawaii for the first time, and have loved Iz's music ever since. This CD should be in anyone's collection who loves contemporary Hawaiian music and the versatile sound of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole.

Album Description

This compact disc is being released on IZ's birthday, as a gift to his fans from his 'ohana. The aloha he felt for all of his audiences was passionate-whether they were seeing him in concert or just listening to one of his albums. IZ's life is in his music.

Having just visited Hawaii this is a wonderful cd to enjoy to keep the Aloha spirit alive.

5 out of 5 stars A sound and soul unique.......2006-08-07

IZ's voice is well known to many from his background music on a television commercial for a toy company. He makes everything he sings his own, no matter the genre, the era. He sings traditional (pre-statehood) Hawaiian music with a vibrance that reflects his love of the islands and the early way of island life which he worked to promote. He sings popular standards adding his own soaring improvisations, his own interpretations, revealing music we never knew was there. Buy this recording. Buy all his recordings, as I have. Listen to them all by yourself, then listen to them with your closest friends. They are deeply-felt, deeply-personal works of music that have touched me and broadened my vision of what good music can be.

3 out of 5 stars Magical.......2006-03-11

I love this man's music and spirit, however, this was not my very favorite of all his albums. I loved "Facing Future" the very most. But there is not a time or an album that you cannot be extremely moved by Iz's music and soul and love of his Hawaii.

5 out of 5 stars Best Music On The Planet.......2005-10-27

In the beginning of the movie Contact, our planet earth is shown wildly spinning through space, expelling out transmissions of television and radio. The feeling is that we are representing ourselves to possible listeners from beyond. It's a fascinating thought, and more than a little embarrassing if you think about it.

This live cd by Bruddah Iz is something very special. It's something that would make me proud to broadcast into space, traveling until it's received and pondered by an intelligent lifeform. It's powerful, beautiful music, presented by a kind-hearted man. This is absolutely how I would like our planet to be represented. Perhaps this is why I frequently listen to Iz after I've overdosed on the complexities and harshness of living, or the bad vibes seen on the news.

Someone below stated that there is too much talking, and not enough music. I don't get it. I have everything that Iz ever created, including cds, dvds and videos, and treasure every single one. The fact that he does talk is what is special here. Iz is a generous window into an indigenous culture, and he shares this like no other. But, the cd is mostly about the music, and I never gained a sense that this is chatty or unmusical. I love hearing him talk, especially since he has moved on and the talking has stopped. At the end of Alone In IZ World there is a secret track, where he is talking about having trouble breathing, shortly before he moved on. This is powerful, and very moving.

Facing Future is a great place to start, and this cd is a great second ... or perhaps E Ala E. But, I've nearly worn this one out. Iz was musical down to his bones, but more than that his music is healing and represents the highest nature of us.

4 out of 5 stars Satisfying version of 'Pictures..'; liked album on the whole.......2007-05-31

I had attended a SF Symphony performance which included "Pictures At An Exhibition" as orchestrated by Ravel. I was pleasantly suprised by how much I liked that piece taken as a whole. I have always thought highly of Bernstein's interpretation, and believed I would hear a nicely played and interpreted version of 'Pictures..' Indeed, the piece is executed as I thought it would. I like Bernstein's interpretation of 'Pictures At An Exhibition', and the album, on the whole, is worth the suggested price.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful music!.......2007-01-27

I loved this CD. It is the same cover and everything as the record we had while I was growing up. In HS we actually marched to this! Wonderful memories and excellent recording.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless.......2003-12-31

There are very few musical memories I have before the age of ten but "Pictures At An Exhibition" is one of them.
I was in bed putting off going to school when I saw this awsome ad for The United States Navy.
While showing scenes of eighteenth century battleships, they played this music. Nearly thirty years later, I still cant get it out of my head!

3 out of 5 stars Last movement of Pictures conducted too slow.......2002-05-21

Hello,
I feel that Bernstein conducted the last movement of Pictures too slowly. It has a majesty and grace all it's own but in Bernstein's hands it slows to a jaunted crawl and looses some of the awe effect. Also the percussion is ever so slightly too loud in the end. I don't thing the tubular bells or gong were meant to be heard as much felt. Kind of a let down, but there's another version I'm used to hearing that set me up for this. Not sure what version that is, but I'll let ya know if I find out. The rest of "Pictures" is decent, and "Night" is great.
Phillip

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding performance.......2001-05-03

Bernstein really captures the spirit of the music, from the light feel of the Unhatched chicks and the Market Place at Limoges, to the pure brawn of Bydlo, to the mysteriousness of the catacombs and the cum mortuis in liqua mortua, finishing it triumphantly with the great gate of Kiev. I've really enjoyed this production, and listen to it frequently.
