Emperor managed one full-scale tour in the course of their 10-year history. Emperial Live Ceremony, which documents a 1999 London performance, brings their riff-laden songs and lofty odes to the night spirits down to earth. A 45-minute set pulls together tracks from Into the Nightside Eclipse, Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk, and IX Equilibrium, while newer tracks such as "An Elegy of Icaros" recapture the savagery that Emperor lost as the group crept toward ever-loftier summits in the 1990s. The demo oldie "Night of the Graveless Souls," meanwhile, fuses the gaps between black metal and progressive thrash. This concert collection provides a reminder of Emperor's long and fascinating legacy. --Ian Christe

        4 out of 5 stars Almost a masterwork........2005-08-28

Emperor is one of the few band whose music is categorized under "Black Metal" yet do not suffer from immature dedication to a scene which basically involves trying to seem as evil as you can. Instead of practicing satanism, they practiced with their instruments. And it shows.

Bands often suffer sound degradation even a few make mistakes when playing live. Emperor manages to keep these factors at a minimum somehow, while although not up the ungodly high quality of a live Metallica recording, approaches it several times.

"Curse You All Men!" opens things here, a furious track which showcases the two guitarists' (Sammoth and Ihshan I believe) skills - instead of furious churning, they blast out In Flames-style sounds against a backdrop of Trym stomping on his drum pedals at almost the same speed he's hitting the drums on top. There are a few breaks in the song's relentless charge almost as if the listener is being given a chance to catch their breath before being pummeled again. So far so good. Onward to track 2.

"Thus Spake the Nightspirit" is one of my personal favorite songs from any band. But it is one song which does not sound quite as good as its original studio recording. Ihshan's harsh screams don't sound quite as menacing and fitting as his snarl on the studio version. But it's still a damn good song.

Next up, "I Am the Black Wizards." Again, a blend of aggression with a downright majestic-sounding chorus. Emperor is indeed most worthy of their band name.

"An Elegy of Icaros" I'm a bit undecided on this one. I don't really like how it begins and ends, because Ihshan puts a bit too much of his hoarse growl into what should be his clean vocals. One of few things which prevent me from awarding this five stars.

"With Strength I Burn" Holy crap. This track simply had me in awe, its epic feel and perfectly-chosen keyboard sounds sucked me in. Don't care much for the spoken-word part but that's not stopping this juggernaut. Ihshan gets his clean vocals spot-on. Give him the metal salute for this one.

"Sworn" Return to death screams for this one, it's all about aggression. Brilliant guitar melodies.

"Night of the Graveless Souls" The keyboard parts fit surprising well with this considering you'd think they'd be more suited for a techno *cough* song *cough* *cough*. A most commendable achievement.

"Inno a Satana" The weakest of the songs in my opinion. Ihshan sounds just a bit too much like an opera signer in here.

"Ye Entrancemperium" They saved the best for last. Starts out with bone-crunching fury not unlike "Sworn" and then becomes an epic. Ihshan's clean vocals here are his best on the CD, and I think better than on the original studio version. Add some good more controlled drums and excellent-as-usual guitars and you've got what might be the best track on the CD.

        Bottom line:
If you're a metal fan in general, you should at least have heard of Emperor. While I don't recommend this be the first CD of theirs to get, it's one anyone who likes the group should know about. Satansim not included. They're more mature than that.

5 out of 5 stars Great sound, great shots, great video!!!!!.......2001-03-29

This is what a video must be!!! The shots taken at the musicians were perfect, you can even see how solos are played with closeup. Every musician had a share of time so you'll not be disgusted of seen only the singer staring at you the entire video (as Danni from Cradle of Filth). The sound is perfect, and no mistakes were commited by Emperor, they have to be perfectionists.

This is a real video, not another video!!!

5 out of 5 stars Emperor's First Official Live Album.......2000-06-22

Many bootlegged Live Emperor albums have been released over the years, but none of them has ever gotten close to the quality of the Emperial Live Ceremony. The sound quality is great, and fully demonstrates the capacity of the band. Indeed one can truely the feel the power that Emperor unleashes when they play live. The track list is amazing and contains tracks from almost every album. Just listen to "Ye Entranceperium" or "I Am the Black Wizards" and you'll understand why I think this is, by far, the best album the Norwegien band has ever released.

5 out of 5 stars Not everything put out by Valor sucks.......2006-01-14

This is a good introduction for anyone interested in that genre that had been labelled 'goth' by music journalists. This album came out in 1986, when the gothic thing was really starting to crystalize into a distinct sound and this album sums up that sound well. Some songs are mellow with piano and guitar with lots of reverb, others are more rockin, and all of it is filled with atmosphere and the bass guitar is prominent. Valor's vocals on this album are what was becoming standard goth style while Gitane Demone's vocals were much more powerful than his. It is a shame that she only sung on a couple of these songs.

Like most Christian Death albums, this one is controversial because none of the people involved in its making were in the original line up of Christian Death. They weren't even on the first album. It's a totally different band with Valor Kand (who joined the group on the second album) assuming leadership. This album, along with the Wind Kissed Pictures EP (1985) were the first Christian Death releases after the last original member had left the group (Rozz Williams:vocals). It contains three members from Pompeii 99 (a really good and poppy eclectic band yet unknown and underrated) and two guys from Mephisto Waltz. The synergy between these musicians made for some really good music but unfortunately the latter two members left the group after this album was made so they could concentrate on their own Mephisto Waltz project.

The Pompeii 99 members would continue to release albums under the Christian Death name but these albums could never match up to this one or the Wind Kissed Pictures. This is why Atrocities and Wind Kiss Pictures are the only albums without Rozz or any other original members that I would recommend. Among albums with Rozz Williams, I would recommend their first album Only Theatre of Pain (1982), especially if you like bands like Samhain (back before goth was clearly defined, more eclectic and experimental, and more post-punk, when it was given labels in the US like 'death rock', 'horrer rock', 'ghoul rock', and 'death punk'). But this is the only Christian Death album without Rozz that matches the power and creativity of Only Theatre of Pain even though these two albums sound nothing alike.

For those who are cautious of buying this album on the grounds that they refuse to support Valor because he stole the Christian Death name from the original group, bear in mind that Valor wasted no time in taking copyright control of all Christian Death releases with Rozz Williams after Rozz died (though I don't know if Only Theatre of Pain is included). So not only do you end up supporting Valor anyway if you only buy the albums with Rozz, but you miss out on a very good album here.

        4 out of 5 stars I love Jesus.......2005-05-12

        Just Kidding!

First off, I'd like to say that I don't give a damn
about Rozz Williams. This contoversy sickens me. Valor carries
the name because there is a thing called "survival of the
        fittest".

I got into Christian Death in the mid 80's and I Believe this was my first purchase of them. I also gladly enjoyed Catastrophe Ballet, The Wind Kissed Pictures, Scriptures, and then Sex, Drugs and Jesus Christ. All these albums are great and should be considered classics in the death rock/gothic genre. Valor is a true Rock and Roll singer like Jim Morrison, Elvis, etc. He is my gothic version of Jesus.

Will o' the Wisp is a great song. One of Christian Death's best. The album is pretty strong overall and I'll listen to it
any day over and against Rozz's punk krappola.

After this, try the Wind Kissed Pictures. The song, "The Lake of Fire" is great. It is experimental for the time and truely evil. Listening to the billions of souls in hell can be envigorating! I'm sure Rozz is there sucking on the devil's
        left testicle.

3 out of 5 stars Won't work on players that read CD-R/RW.......2003-05-25

I gave it 3 stars because I love this album. I really do. But the fact that I can only play it on my rickety old CD player (that's gasping its last breath as it is) and not on any other CD player I own is a huge disappointment. I've noticed that there's only a problem on players that read CD-R and CD-RW. So, if you plan on listening to it on one of those, stay away from the Cleopatra release.

I can't very well carry the vinyl version I've had for years with me so hopefully I'll be able to track down the Nostradamus version of this CD eventually. It's a shame, really it is.

5 out of 5 stars The best Christian Death release by Valor.......2002-04-25

A lot of people have the habit of dismissing the work Valor Kand did with and for Christian Death. Rozz Williams, god rest his soul, was indeed an exceptional lyricist, musician, and artist and without him, their probably never would have been such a thing as Death Rock. However, I have to say that without Valor, Christian Death would have ended after "Ashes" was released and though some believe that it should have, it certainly would be a shame if some of the releases that Valor was responsible for never came into being, as many open minded people do enjoy them for what they are - good Gothic Rock records. This means no disrepect to Rozz Williams. "Only Theatre Of Pain" is a classic, as is the two releases he worked on with Valor. However, I would rather listen to "Sexy Death God" or "Wind Kissed Pictures" over Shadow Project any day ;)

The initial three recordings that Valor released under the name Christian Death are some of the most influential and powerful Gothic Rock albums ever recorded. And though Valor hit a *very low* period in the late 80's and early 90's and released a few albums that have no more than one or two good tracks, he still is a remarkably talented musician with more insight and vision in one eye than most Gothic performers. He and Bari-Bari (Mephisto Walz) are basically responsible for the 'Gothic' guitar sound as it was throughout the late 80's and into the 90's.

So with all that said, I have to recommend this 1986 release, the 2nd recording Valor did under the name Christian Death. A conceptual release that explores the 'atrocities' of WWII, the album is a stark and melancholic descent into psychology and emotional trauma. Besides the upbeat, Post-Punk/Death Rock brilliance of tracks like "Will O' The Wisp," "Silent Thunder" and "Strapping Me Down," you also find the acoustic mediaeval nostalgia of "Strange Fortune" and the haunting gloom of "The Danzig Waltz," an eerie piano driven track with ghostly vocals and creepy violin effects.

As well, "Atrocities" captures Gitane DeMone's most powerful and memorable moments in Christian Death. First with the dark and sensual classic "Tales Of Innocence," an unrivaled example of atmospheric Gothic Rock. And of course, Gitane's rendition of the infamous Billie Holiday lament "Gloomy Sunday." Though these tracks are available on various live compilations, absolutely nothing compares to the original studio versions of these songs which appear on this release alone.

If you are a fan of the albums "Catastrophe Ballet" and "Ashes," then "Atrocities" will definitely appeal to you. Though it does not feature the voice of Rozz Williams, I hope that more people will be open minded and check out this fantastic and seminal Gothic Rock release. There are few Gothic Rock albums that feel as complete and satsifying as this one.

Apparently, the Cleopatra re-release has some technical glitches, not to mention a rather poor lyric booklet. If possible, try to seek out the original Nostradamus release which has a much better lyric booklet and sounds just as good.

        5 out of 5 stars A true classic.......2001-06-02

Atrocities finds Christian Death somewhere between the departure of Rozz Williams and Valor's turn towards metal. The result is arguably the best release by Valor's Christian Death.

Still fueled to some extent by the musical tendencies of earlier Christian Death material as well as occassionally imitating Rozz's vocal style, Valor manages to create a truly emotional and atmospheric album. Distinct guitar and bass driven gothic rock melodies fuse with classical ambience and instrumentation. Valor's lyrical skills also seem to have peaked here, with emotional and poetic lyrics that don't resort to the religious preaching or often amusing vulgarity and sexuality that would plague much of his later body of work. Gitane is also in top shape here with wonderful vocal work on the beautiful "Tales of Innocence" and an original take on the classic "Gloomy Sunday"...

This album would also be of special interest to fans of Mephisto Walz. Central Mephisto Walz songwriter and musician B. Galvin appears here as bassist as well as co-writer on several songs. The atmospheric sound on many of the songs here is almost completely identical to Mephisto Walz's signature sound. In fact, this album contains the original version of "Silent Thunder", which would later be released in re-recorded form as a Mephisto Walz track.

The only complaint I have about this album is Cleopatra's remaster. Like their other Christian Death reissues, the disc won't play right in some portable/car CD players and there are volume/clarity issues with some speakers. However, despite the faults of the record label, this album is still a must have for fans of Christian Death, Mephisto Walz, or atmospheric gothic rock in general.

5 out of 5 stars among the best of Christian Death.......2004-11-23

Despite other reviews for this album, Valor does not copy Rozz's singing style. To the contrary he shows an impressive and original vocal range. Does the die-hard Rozz fan in an earlier review really put bad Rozz projects -- e.g., Path of Sorrows -- above Atrocities? (How can you even STAND Rozz's whiny, snivling, and nasal sound in his 90s Christian Death material? His singing style used to be comparable to Bowie -- but that was back in 84!) As far as comparison to Rozz's early (legitimate) contributions to the Christian Death catalog go, this album is way better than Only Theatre of Pain, and is every bit as good as Ashes. Indeed, this album marks a substantial evolution from the earlier Wind Kissed Pictures. It is full of atmosphere and subtlety. Also, despite the other reviews, the sound of this album can in no way be described as metal. At times Atrocities has a fast pace, but this album does not have the crunchy hair-metal guitars of All the Hate. It is no more metal than the fast-paced ending of Ashes, part 1. Atrocities, Past Present and Forever (Wind Kissed Pictures reissued with amazing and highly atmospheric bonus tracks), and Insanus Proditius....represent very worthwhile efforts from Valor. In terms of the whole Christian Death catalog, this album is second only to Catastrophe Ballet (which was, by the way, written almost entirly by Valor). And, no, it sounds nothing like anything by Death In June (my favorite band of all time), much of which is acoustic in orientation.

        2 out of 5 stars Yawn!.......2003-07-04

Okay, yes the Rozz Vs. Valor debate almost obscures the Music when one talks about Christian Death, but, I bought this album, and gave it a fair listen along with the rest of the Christian Death catalog, before Valor and after. Here is my review. This album is boring. The arrangements drag, making the songs themselves seem indulgent, even pretentious. The regular use of stops and pregnant pauses wears quickly, losing the attention of the listener. Valor is copying Rozz's vocal AND lyric style, without the dynamism of Rozz, a seething and guttural snarl, a smooth breathy death rattle. It becomes obvious this is not in Valor's home range, his voice should sit higher and he should "belt" or "project" more. His vocal tracks are also buried in the mix, obscured and muddy. When you crank it up to hear better, you perceive the weaknesses in Valor's voice. The addition of Gitane Demone adds to the beauty and pacing of the music mixing with Valor well, but, her voice here is not as rich, nor technically profiecent as it would grow to be in her later career. The musicianship is alright. The songwriting is not served by too many "spooky" atmospherics. If you like later Christian Death with its more Metal flavor, you will see the evolution into that from this. If you like Death In June you'll like this more "Goth" but still abstract take on Gloom. If you like earlier Christian Death like Only Theatre of Pain or other Death Rock or Punk bands, this isn't for you. To my ear however the best Christian Death releases, being technically and artistically balanced are, Catastrophe Ballet(my favorite of all) and Ashes. Both these albums featured Rozz, Valor, and Gitane each in balance doing what they do best.

4 out of 5 stars Further reaches of Christian Death.......2003-02-13

Valor made do with Christian Death after Rozz's departure and although there were indeed a few bad eggs that came from Valor. "Atrocities" serves as a heck of a change, albiet a nice one. "Ashes" and "Catastrophe Ballet" are the most revered albums Chriatian Death put out due to the fact that Rozz and Valor shined in thier writing ability. Valor created a signiture guitar style that influenced many even in mainstrem rock to utilize his eerie tones and Rozz as always wrote astonishing lyrics.

Valor did not lack at all in this album proving he too could muster up some great poetry. Not as vein or errogant as later albums "Atrocities" was made with a true respect for diversity and an alomost medieval type interpretation.

It is a rare occasion that people leave out the gothic sterotype long enough to view much of the well structured writing that came from Rozz and Valor especially during "Catastrophe Ballet" and "Ashes"(Ashes is the best album useing the Christian Death name). "Atrocities" although truly servicing the stereotype of goth very much does not lack in the integrity to provide richly atmosphereic rock n roll.

try "Tales of Innocense" as it truly is one brutaly elegant song and one of this reviewers personal favorite song. 4 1/2 stars...

1 out of 5 stars Very clever title........1999-06-10

This cd is called "ATROCITIES" for a REASON. It SUCKS!!! I don't blame Rozz Williams for leaving. Valor turned this great band into a crap factory, churning out one steaming turd after another. Listen to at your own risk!!! A dedicated rozz fan!
