After years of making brilliantly eccentric albums with his scruffy Texas friends, Jimmie Dale Gilmore was invited to Nashville to record an album with mainstream country producer Emory Gordy Jr., George Jones, Patty Loveless, and some of country music's top session players. The result, Spinning Around the Sun, sounds very much like its predecessors, proving that Gilmore has far more to teach Nashville than it has to teach him. Gilmore, named after Jimmie Rodgers and a product of Buddy Holly's hometown of Lubbock, sings with a hillbilly purity that nails every note even as it retains a dirt farmer's dignity in the midst of a lover's last-chance confession. --Geoffrey Himes
Customer Reviews:
Amazing Songwriter and Unique Vocalist.......2007-07-05
Jimmie Dale Gilmore is a talented songwriter and vocalist. His voice is so strong and unique. He can do things with his voice that you just don't hear from any other artist. It is amazing. I have several of his cds and this is my favorite of his work. I really like the song "Another Colorado" because that is the name of the river that runs through my hometown and I love it. Jimmie's song is called "Another Colorado" because one day when he was on the banks of the river he learned that the Colorado River running through Austin, Texas is a whole different river from that other Western Colorado River that so famously carved out the Grand Canyon.
Jimmie Dale's songwriting skills are impressive in the lyrics to songs like "Just a Wave." He has some newer work out Come on Back but this is the best. Some of his best music is with his band the Flatlanders Wheels of Fortune including his buddies from his hometown, Joe Ely Letter to Laredo and Butch Hancock War and Peace. The film Lubbock Lights, Limited Edition gives some great background to Jimmie Dale and the other flatlander's experience growing up in Lubbock where the people are the biggest things around.
Why didn't I discover this before?.......2007-05-17
The absolute best of Jimmie Dale as a solo artist. The cover songs sounded new and written for Jimmie Dale's unique voice. The original songs are soulful and memorable. My favorite states "Babe, you're just a wave, you're not the water".
jimmie dale gilmore's masterpiece........2007-04-05
i had a dream last night. i dreamed that i lived in a world where toby keith, vince gill and garth brooks were anonymous individuals, perhaps working in construction, and that the most lauded and famous country music stars were fellas named "billy joe shaver," "buddy miller," and "jimmie dale gilmore." what a great dream. and when i awoke i was sad, because i remembered how the world really was. i just wanted to go back to sleep and dream some more.
spinning with joy.......2007-03-08
This is flat-out the best Jimmie Dale Gilmore CD ever. Just listen to it once and you will want to listen again and again. And again.
studio.......2006-07-03
If you are like me, (and nobody is) you will want to have all of JDG's works, but I would get Fair and Square or One Endless Night before getting this one. Even when an actual artist does a "studio" album it has a feeling of being handcrafted. Maybe he should have culled I'm So Lonesome. . . But this is a guy who took Mack the Knife away from Bobby Darin and Louie Armstrong.

Wonderful CD.......2007-06-05
I love this CD. Ben Taylor did the nearly impossible....rose out of the shadow of two musical giants with his own style and sound. It is impressive. Great music. Thank you Ben Taylor.
Soothing Lullaby.......2007-02-08
Ben Taylor's sophomore set is an excellent pop folk mix that keeps growing with repeated plays. Of my three favorite tracks, the opener "Nothing I Can Do" is a lovely folk melody with Ben's finger style guitar and some luscious Simon family background vocals and lyrics that are exquisite poetry, "When she spun 180 degrees & beheld the sweet light rising through the trees, she fell to her knees & she begun to smile because she had been in darkness for a long long while." It's a lovely awakening. The sweet shuffle of "You Must've Fallen" has a melody that bubbles like a brook in summertime as Ben floats over the notes, "I swear to God you must be some kind of ghost in disguise." "Think A Man Would Know" has a beautiful counter-melody to intro the track with Carly Simon on vocals and then blooms into Ben's pensive reflection, "I'm gonna do some changing, try to lead the life I know my life deserves to live." The track ends with a stunning call & response with strings punctuating the melody line. The other tracks on the disc are also strong including the breezy "Always," the wry "Someday Soon" & the gentle closer "Love." "Another Run Around the Sun" is so different from the pop onslaught of drum loops and sampling that it comes as a soothing lullaby from this fine young musician with the famous family tree. Enjoy!
Wonderful Pop-Rock!.......2007-01-10
Ben Taylor's style comes across as a pleasurable mix of pop-rock in the tradition of the 1970's. The pleasant surprise is that it has a 21st century appeal! A MUST for "baby-boomers" looking for new material and their children who want something better than their parents' nostalgia!
Good music, bad CD.......2007-01-09
I love Ben Taylor's voice and sound, but the CD has many glitches, portions of it keep repeating, even though it went in to my player in pristine condition. It may be a manufacturing flaw. I don't have this problem with other new CDs.
Another Run around the Sun Ben Taylor.......2007-01-05
I loved Ben singing " I Will", sounded so much like Dad, I thought how could I not like a whole CD by him? Well I was very disappointed, he has a lovely voice but I didn't click with any song on his CD. Don't know if it's just his choice of songs or if it was my 35 year old addiction to James Taylor that clouded my vision, expecting to see what his father has. I bought Sally's CD also, hers was a little better, but not nearly as great as I thought she would be after listening to her sing on her Mom's CD. I love that whole talented family but I wasn't thrilled with this CD, sorry Ben!

Having delivered their last great album with 1992's haunting Automatic For the People, R.E.M. spent more than decade attempting all kinds of reinvention, from the pointlessly noisy Monster to the painfully dull Up. But with Around the Sun it feels like the band is getting its bearings back. Not only is it the Georgia trio's most consistent album since the 1997 departure of drummer Bill Berry, but it also sees the return of the lush imagery and intricate playing of the band's vintage years. There are trains, mandolins, Man Ray skies. More importantly, it seems heartfelt. Witness the gorgeous disquietingly dark opener "Leaving New York," the rapturous folk of "I Wanted to Be Wrong" and the solidly intense "Boy In the Well." At 13 generous tracks, it's far from perfect but--just when everyone thought R.E.M. was down for the count--Around the Sun is an unexpected bruiser of a comeback. --Aidin Vaziri
Album Description
Around The Sun, R.E.M.'s first new studio album since 2001's gold Reveal, is as emotional and ulti- mately uplifting as its "Leaving New York" single. With a renewed band dynamic and songs influenced by world events, Around The Sun surprises and satisfies and is both political and poignant. Says Michael Stipe: "Even the most depressing R.E.M.song is going to have a glimmer of hope." For fans of one of rock's most acclaimed bands, hope revolves around R.E.M.
Customer Reviews:
Nice enough, but missing more than just Bill Berry.......2007-07-07
The album is nice enough, but has the feeling of sameness from song to song. It needs a rocker or two and some of classic R.E.M.'s jangle. 'Leaving New York" and "Electron Blue" are good songs to kick off the album, and the rest of the record is very listenable, but unremarkable and a bit too cohessive. I just listened to it twice and thought it was good, not great, and in the past R.E.M. has been great. Here, they sound a bit tired - competent, but tired.
Introspective, melodic wonder.......2007-01-21
I'm a relatively recent fan of the REM. My southern belle spoke so highly of them I had to check it out. Frankly, just the way I like Adore by the Smashing Pumkins better than their more rowdy records, although their ardent fanbase thinks they've gone "soft," I like the latest three outings by REM. Their longtime fan's don't seem to respond to the mellower, more mature REM, but I think that Around the Sun is an introspective, melodic wonder.
this fear will not destroy me.......2006-12-21
The very first chords of 'Leaving New York' assure us that AROUND THE SUN will be classic R.E.M.
Not to mention the lyrics. As before, here is R.E.M. chronicling loneliness, leaving, being left, getting left behind:
'you might have laughed if I told you
you might have hidden a frown
you might have succeeded in changing me
I might have been turned around'
But of course the story line will not tolerate sudden changes, imposed reformation, reconciled lovers. It is about things that were, things that could have been, love and satisfaction overcome by life's enduring entropy:
'it's easier to leave
than to be left behind
leaving was never my proud
leaving new york. never easy.
I saw the light fading out'
That, after all, is what lights do. Fade. Flicker. Gone. But never forgotten.
R.E.M. is about remembering, their lyrics a complex narrative of loves lost but somehow present in the angst-ridden act of recalling things that simply couldn't last. Didn't last. Can't last.
There is an almost existential embracing of this fragmentation that permeates the DNA of human experience. Loss, we are asked to suppose, without fear. 'The Outsiders':
'A man walks away. when every muscle says to stay.
how many yesterdays? they each weigh heavy.
who says what changes may come. who says what we call home.'
Who indeed? There is only loss, hands that no longer even grasp onto what they understand must slip away.
A persistent element of R.E.M.'s genius across two decades of narrating loss and speaking of memory, remembering, memories is the failure to raise their voice. They regret, but they do not rage.
Though 'Final Straw' is as angry as its title suggests, Michael Stipe almost whispers his resolve. Whispers, doesn't shout:
'if hatred makes a play on me tomorrow
and forgiveness takes a back seat to revenge
there's a hurt down deep that has not been corrected.
there's a voice in me that says you will not win.'
A steely, simmering morality interpenetrates this track. The songwriter will not be overcome by hatred, but he will insist on understanding why:
'for this fear will not destroy me.
and the fears that have been shed
it's knowing now where I am weakest
and the voice in my head. in my head
then I raise my voice up higher (reviewer: morally, but Stipe is still almost at a whisper)
and I look you in the eye
and I offer love with one condition.
with conviction, tell me why.
tell me why.
tell me why.
look me in the eye.
tell me why.'
Even pandemic regret insists on understanding why. Perhaps that's what it means to be human. Perhaps.
R.E.M. is at its best in AROUND THE SUN -- as throughout the band's career -- when a down-tempo balladesque tone allows them to tell the story of regret, always regret. Trauma too intelligently bent on understanding to become numb. The embrace of the freedom that comes from not raising one's voice.
Rage cut off at the margins by decency, forgiveness, even regret.
'the crime of good men who can't wrestle with change,
or are too afraid to face this life's misjudged unknowns
you're not hurting anybody else's chances,
but you're disfiguring your own.'
A morality of regret. Beautifully sung, questions poignantly put. Asked. Put again.
All the way around the sun.
Revisited This Recently.......2006-11-02
(After years of forward progress (With the exception of Up) some signs of aging finally show here. There's nothing awful here. There's just nothing memorable. Hopefully, the next release will show this was a fluke.)
I wrote that awhile back, but have been listening to this again recently. It's really not as average as I originally thought. "Leaving New York" is a really good song, and "Electron Blue" and "I Wanted To Be Wrong" really caught my ear this time. Overall I'd upgrade it to 3 stars but Amazon wouldn't let me.
Great album.......2006-08-11
Ascent of man is one of REMs finest moments. Around the Sun is a great record. Leaving New York, Wanderlust and Around the Sun are all fantastic. The only song I could do without was the Outsiders. I felt Q Tips portion of the song just didnt fit. Overall highly recomended.

I heard this band on fm94.9 in san diego and the second I heard it, i knew I had to get the CD. Each song is a stand alone work of art with the whole set making for a classic first record. Customer Reviews:
Just amazing.......2005-08-22
I'd been semi-familiar with I Mother Earth's music and then I heard that their lead singer Edwin had split from the band. I knew he had his own style but I never realized just how good his solo material was until I heard the song "Alive"...and then as I've been known to do, I bought the CD to see what else this guy had up his sleeve. Well, as it turns out...this guy has some sleeves. From the opening heartbeat in "Theories" to the slightly Lennonesque "And You" to everything else on the album, this is just some amazing stuff. Not a single track that sounds like any other track on the disc...totally diverse and yet totally cohesive. There were at least five singles to come from this disc in his native Canada, and I've turned a ton of folks on to this CD here in the States. It draws you in and keeps you there. Don't wait. Investigate this CD...then bombard Edwin's website with e-mail asking when his next CD is coming (his second CD with his new band, Edwin & the Pressure, is filled with more of his unique spin on the world...no pun intended).
This CD IS very much worth your time!
Not bad.......2005-02-06
This isn't as good as "Scenery and Fish" by I Mother Earth but it's still a decent solo album. Edwin's song "Alive" was a huge hit in Canada and it's easy to see why - it's a beautiful song with nice lyrics. Aside from Edwin's annoying voice, "Another Spin Around the Sun" is an awesome record.
What Else Could Be Expected?.......2004-02-15
Well, here it is. Edwin left I Mother Earth on the basis that they wanted to go different ways in te directions of their music, and in Another Spin Around The Sun he sounds like he wanted to go the route with the most pot on it. Most of the songs on this album can be found to be hinting to marijuana or blatently singing about it, leaving one to wonder just what it was Edwin really saw in his solo career. Anyone who listened to him on IME's productions 'Dig' and 'Scenery And Fish' can say that weed has always been around those guys, but this album shows the true affinity Edwin has for the sweetleaf. We can't blame him, but I think Snoop Dogg had that one wrapped up in the lyrical bag. Nice try, but I think we can expect more to come from the guy who was the frontrunner of Canada's best kept secret, right?
Edwin - Another Spin Around the Sun.......2001-01-30
This CD is amazing. Edwin is truely an amazing artist and his talent should be brought into the US a little more. I have recommended this CD to all of my friends. Every song is great, unlike some other CDs with only one good song. In short, this is a must have CD.
EDWIN ANOTHER SPIN AROUND THE SUN.......2000-10-22
WHEN I FIRST BROUGHT THIS CD HOME I WAS SURE IT WOULD BE GOOD BUT JEESE I WAS WRONG. THIS CD IS JUST AMAZING.I WAS NOT THAT SURE IF EDWIN WOULD MAKE IT FOR A SOLO CAREE. ALMOST EVERY SONG IS GOOD. MY PERSONAL FAVORITES ARE ALIVE,HANGTEN,RUSH AND AND YOU.IF YOUR LOOKIND FOR SOMTHING GOOD TO BUY PLEASE BUY THIS CD. IT IS WORTH THE MONEY

Customer Reviews:
Still Interesting.......2005-11-06
After twenty years of musical relevance coupled with immense popularity, it now appears as though R.E.M. might have gone full circle, returning to their earlier status as a cultish `alternative' band. Twenty-plus years of relevance indicate that they became an institution, and as such, they may have lost the ability to surprise their fans. An unfortunate side effect of this is a dwindling fan base - an interesting circumstance, since the album's underlying theme seems to be dismay at the direction of contemporary American culture, politically and otherwise. No matter. Although it is unlikely that they will renew their status as one of the `best (read most popular) bands of the decade', their musical strengths have not diminished. Under the Sun is perhaps the most carefully crafted of any R.E.M. album, which is its greatest strength as well as its weakness. Each arrangement sounds fully realized and well thought-out, giving the album a cleaner, almost folksy sound, without the requisite experimentalism that defined much of their previous work. The result can be described as pretty, if not particularly fresh, but the band is well beyond the point of proving themselves. They may no longer be on the cutting edge, but as far as I'm concerned, if R.E.M. keep making albums as satisfying as this, I'll keep on listening. B+ Tom Ryan
Why this over the regular CD version?.......2005-03-18
Around the Sun has been met with mixed reviews. Either the listener is expecting something R.E.M. has done in the past or the listener is expecting to discover yet another facet of R.E.M., who has shown through the year they are anything but static. There are comprehensive reviews of the album available so I want to concentrate on why you should chose this edition over the standard CD issue, which many of you may already own.
The 5.1 sound of the re-issues has blown me away. If you are not the type of person to "experience" the music this may not be a must have. If, however, you are like me and enjoy listening to the music with the lights off and candles lit, you must experience the 5.1 sound as the subtle sounds come through adding another dimension to the album. ATS has not been out for very long and I was tempted to pass, but I do not regret the decision to purchase simply because of the clarity.
As for bonus materials, you get "LNY" and "Aftermath" videos, a very short 5 minute documentary, and live performace videos of "LNY" and "Imitation of Life."
Because "LNY" and "Aftermath" videos have not been released on DVD this adds to the incentive to pick up the CD-DVD-A.
I think this is a must buy if you do not have the CD and are looking to pick it up, even if you do not currently have 5.1 equipment.

Not to be missed!!!.......2007-04-30
This CD is simply excellent! Anybody who ever cared for TV soundtracks should give it a chance. The only better thing is Barry Gray's music for "UFO" TV series, which has been promised from Silva Screen (and has been published by "Fanderson" and since sould out). So, whatever somebody think of the series, this music will not fail to delight. Impressive and nostalgic, mysterious and enthralling, this music really deserves to be heard by everybody.
Great year one compilation.......2007-01-09
This remastered version of Space:1999 year one or series one sounds excellent. It is very clear and you can better appreciate Barry Gray wonderful job.
If you are Space:1999 fan, it is a must have.
An Excellent CD.......2006-07-27
Talk about bringing back memories. The music is crisp-clear & updated. For the 1999 fans-this is a must have.
Fantastic Future Score.......2005-04-01
Space:1999 - the series - may be one of the most controversial SF shows ever. People either love it, or they hate it... there seems to be little middle ground. As a kid I was thrilled with the series, although even then I could see the weaknesses in science, story, and characterization. But from a purely visual and aural standpoint, the first series rarely disappointed.
Especially when it came to the music. As many fans know, Barry Gray scored only 4 episodes - the rest being rounded out by reusing his cues for those episodes, plus liberal doses of library music. This disc gives a good overview of the magnificent music written specifically for the series, as well as a sampling of some of those library cues. As a previous reviewer said, the ultimate soundtrack to the series was released several years ago by the Fanderson organization ( which one had to join as a member to be able to order ) and is sadly out of print. Copies can be found on the internet, often selling for prohibitive prices. Unless you are a diehard collector, willing to shell out a good sized portion of your paycheck, this single disc is the way to go.
Sound quality is superb, and in some cases surpasses the previously mentioned two disc set, as several of the tracks have been remastered to remove wow, flutter, and distortion that could be heard on the Fanderson set. The main title was remixed to make it truer to the on-screen version, and the tracks from the episode "Black Sun" are in stereo on CD here for the first time ever. The previous release featured the episode's complete score, but only as a monophonic version, as many of the multitrack masters for that particular episode have been lost. For that alone, this disc is worth owning, even if you have the Fanderson set.
However, it is Gray's music that is the true reason to own this soundtrack - regardless of your feelings about the series. Full bodied, sweeping, emotional and grand... not at all your typical seventies television soundtrack. Years before John Williams revived the popularity of orchestral scores for science fiction projects, Barry Gray was filling small screen speakers with epic music that would have sounded perfectly at home in a motion picture theatre.
Space 1999 Year One Soundtrack Available Once Again!.......2005-03-09
I give this soundtrack 5 stars only because the soundtrack is awesome, but if you want a more complete compilation, you need to find the Fanderson version.
The year 1 music definately set the tone for the TV show back in 1975. It gave it beautiful character and feeling for the show. It was ashame that for the second year that they had changed so much (even the music) and lost that character and feeling (but that is a whole other debate).
In 1976, RCA records released the year 1 soundtrack with a beautiful gate fold cover and for about 20+ years, that is all we had, until Fanderson. The year 1 soundtrack is no longer available through them, but it is the most complete. This CD, however, does well to capture the feeling of year 1 and does throw an additional track for you sun bathers out there. It is a nice 30 year anniversary gift to myself. Happy 30th Birthday: SPACE 1999!!!

This album was released precisely twelve months after its predecessor, "Things I Meant To Say." It features ten carefully selected songs, five of which are original compositions by Jake Fleming. Arrangements and instrumental performances by both Jake and fellow arranger/composer Chad Langford, paired with the sublime vocal talents of Jeni Fleming, make this collaboration the trio's most significant musical achievement to date.
The Jeni Fleming Acoustic Trio proudly presents what they feel is truly a comprehensive representation of their musical soul. Enjoy the radiance of "Once Around The Sun!"

Jeni Fleming's voice is beautiful ,arrangement and performance of "in my life" is sublime
An amazing group!.......2005-06-27
I've got to say this group's music is the best I have heard in a long time. I went to see them live and was amazed by the talent in each of them (Jeni Fleming's voice is incredible). Don't miss out on this great album.
More than "once around the sun"!.......2005-01-28
This is by far their best. Jake's original pieces are ones you will have flowing through your head even as you wake up in the morning. You will listen to this CD again and again and again. Their arrangement and performance of "Send in the Clowns" is phenomenal. And the title track gives you a way to express the blessing of another day. Don't let this one pass you by!!

The Special Edition is a two-piece wrapped box containing 14 four-color posters with the CD in a babypak.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-02-07
This album is sophisticated, beautiful, well crafted, brilliant, well produced, well composed, well sung, and, moreover, the lyrics are very symbolic and poetic. It's, undoubtedly, the most solid album this band has put out in years!!!
Good Grief.......2004-10-15
What marketing genius came up with this? Repackage the same boring songs and charge twice as much. I am embarrassed for Mike, Peter and Michael to use this type of marketing on their fans just to add a little cushion in their wallet. I'll save my money for the complete REM box set (from day 1) and hopefully it will include some behind the scenes pics and videos from the early days and not some lack-luster posters just so they can sell it as a "special edition" People please...be smart and do not encourage this type of marketing. Just buy the regular cd and enjoy.
R.E.M.'s best in a very long time.......2004-10-12
12 years, no less.(Yeah, I was reluctant to admit it was better than NAIHF too). But definitely an album worth buying. And the special edition comes with a poster for every song (all really interesting, by the way) and it comes with a box which smells kind of like I think the album should (though I'm not sure that was intentional).
R.E.M.'s Next Finest Hour..........2004-10-08
R.E.M. fans are forced to wait a long time inbetween album releases, and for good reason. Perhaps the hallmark of a true creativity is the willingness and ability to wipe the slate clean, forget everything great and good that preceded the last best thing and dig deep to find, yet again, some new territory.
Around The Sun is stripped down, raw, beautiful song writing. Stipe's voice is ever searching for nuances and ways to haunt us in a way that only he can do.
Lyrically this is probably the richest and most complex of R.E.M.'s work to date. Stipe clearly wishes to say more and emerge from the shadows of his own enigma, and yet there is always the slippage, the question and the mystery of what he actually wants to say. It's still up to the listener to discern and to put the pieces together.
This isn't a perfect album. Sure, it doesn't rock (Green). It isn't pop ballad brilliance (Automatic For The People) or quite R.E.M. in the peak of their audaciousness (New Adventures in Hi-Fi). Around The Sun is crafted, thoughtful, poignant and has something to say. It may not rock you but it'll warm your heart and, in the way Stipe does so well, you won't know whether you want to cry or wiggle a strange happy dance.
Around the Sun.......2004-10-07
Well written and very melodic, however, a little disappointed that it doesn't rock.
