Argentina-born, California-based Gustavo Santaolalla helped shape the rock en Español movement by producing Mexican bands Molotov and Café Tacuba , and Colombian singer Juanes. In the late 1990s he made a switch to soundtracks, working on well-received albums for Amores Perros and The Motorcycle Diaries. His instrumental contributions to Ang Lee's tale of two cowboys in love are acoustic guitar-based and, let's face it, a bit on the sonic-wallpaper side.
The vocal tracks, on the other hand, are uniformly lovely, even if the selection of interpreters falls on the predictable side. Linda Ronstadt, Steve Earle, Willie Nelson, and Mary McBride on the soundtrack to a contemporary Western? What a shock! Still, they're all wonderful and Santaolalla wrote at least a couple of classic-sounding country ballads ("A Love That Will Never Grow Old," sung by Emmylou Harris, and "No One's Gonna Love You Like Me," sung by Mary McBride). And don't miss Teddy Thompson and Rufus Wainwright's sweet cover of Roger Miller's 1964 "King of the Road." --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
iPod owners be warned.......2007-08-01
I loved the movie and the music. However, I'm very disappointed to discover that I cannot get the CD to copy to my iPod. This is a pet peeve of mine - I buy the music, I should get to listen to it on whatever device I choose.
Axe Rufus Wainwright, and it would be 5 stars.......2007-06-13
This album is a mixture of the instrumental theme, which is incredibly beautiful and haunting, and some very solid country songs. I was surprised by how good the other songs were (you still have to like country music, though). There are only two songs that I don't like at all, and those are the two by Rufus Wainwright - one a cover of "King of the Road" (originally by Roger Miller). They are great demonstrations of him at his most nasal and whiny. It sounds like he is a French guy holding his nose and singing too slow. It's too bad, because they are good songs otherwise. I guess if you like him, you're golden; but I can't stand these versions. Fortunately, the rest of the disc is really good.
Yes, it's one of the best albums I own.......2007-06-03
I listened to it over and over and over last year. Such quality all 'round.
Brokeback Mountain.......2007-05-13
The product is what I expected. It arrived on time and in the condition advertised.
A matter of taste..........2007-05-08
I didn't really pay a lot of attention to the music in the film, except for in the most intense of scenes. Perhaps this is why I was so, completely, disappointed with this soundtrack. I felt that if it did even half of what the film did for me it would be a worthy buy. My friends, this soundtrack is shat. It's mostly country and folk, which I am plainly not into. If you like these things then check this out - if not, turn away.

Once upon a time there was a young lad who went by the name of Manitoba, until he was forced by law to change his name. As Caribou, he's a phoenix reborn from the flames of possible litigation. And like Caribou, his two early albums are born again here - harder, better, faster, stronger. Each deluxe re-issue contains an entire bonus disc of material.

Customer Reviews:
Manitoba/Caribou will never stale........2005-09-29
This is Manitoba/Caribou's second album, and it is not disappointing. For anyone familiar with Manitoba's first album, it might at first shock the listener with just how different this album is, but then again, anyone familiar with the first album should be aware that Dan Snaith (the genius behind it all) is all about defying expectations. (And his third album is nothing like "Up in Flames" or "Start Breaking my Heart.")
This album is not as immediately accessible as the first one, but it has a soul that is very worth getting to know. The songs often rock in an almost Neutral Milk Hotel kind of way, and yet the the use of handclaps and kicky beats is unprecedented, and the organic use of xylophone is astonishingly happy, especially in the song "Crayon," which starts as a bright, instrumental xylophone piece and becomes a New Order/Joy Division celebration.
This album is perfect for listening to as you drive dirt roads late at night. All Manitoba/Caribou is. Every album of theirs is so different from the others, yet there's always that certain something that you can recognize in the core of it. ...Like seeing an old friend who's really grown into someone new and amazing, yet is still the same old pal you ditched school with.
Accept "Up in Flames" as something new and different, love it for the wonderful thing that it is, and keep an eye out for whatever Dan Snaith does next. It's bound to be good.
mutten skewers oregano.......2005-08-20
I picked up this import in Osaka Japan because of the bonus CD which turned out to be the most amazing part of the package. There is a tack titled "Cherrybomb Part II" and if this isn't one of the most colossal tracks in the history of electronic experimentation then you just ate poo. It almost makes me cry everytime I listen to it. I am listening to it now and I'm on the verge of tears.
Unfortunately I found the rest of the album to be lacking. I found it nothing like the amazing Boards of Canada albums. In short, I was disappointed. The tracks are generally too fruity and fluffy for my tastes, or just plain uninteresting with the above exception and a couple other anomalous keepers. This album will not take you to quadrant six, sector 4. It will take you to quadrant fart, sector bum.
(another) contender emerges from the north..........2005-06-11
u know,
it's hilarious how the world's all amazed as to the 'recent' influx of canadian-born artists hitting the music scene with full force nowadays... an effect of course caused by both a self-imposed patriotic humility and an externally-imposed strategy of dumbing-down mainstream quality (we don't need to name names, do we?!?)... this as to not divulge the relationship between having a more 'chilled' location/background and exuding raw talent and unabashed creativity... (shhh. don't tell anyone. big big secret.)
well, as dan said once in an interview, "ever heard of Rush?". indeed. ok, what about Neil Young? Leonard Cohen? the Guess Who? still with me? then, the Hip (and gord's on the all-time canuck list, btw... see his 'Coke Machine Glow'), and matt good (underdogs, beautiful midnight, audio of being) kept the torch alive for a bit, and now it's GYBE (and family), the arcade fire, broken social scene, hot hot heat, dears, stills, sexsmith, wainwright, on and on... so please, once in for all, forget the heavily-exported big three cheesy-canuckian-divas (again, no names here!)
As for this album, truly deserving to be spoken of in the same breath as the above, it very much does have a "loveless" feel to it, eh? 'folktronica' is what we're calling it, apparently. indeed, you get kevin shields to take some of hebden's LSD, and have him close to a drum kit at its onset, and what happens next would come out sounding very similar to this.... hm. maybe, maybe not, but u get the idea.
quite hard for me to verbalise on this one, since the whole of Up in Flames is a aural jem, a genuine classic. rarities like that are always going to be somewhat ineffable (and that's one of the artist's goal, i would think). i therefore hesitate to include favorite tracks here, since it may lead some to ignore the rest (so don't!).
having said that (ahem):
Skunks: with the frog crocks at bookends, and all the swirling guitars and crazy drumming in between. an all-timer, this one. everyone should include it on at least one of their summer mixes.
Hendrix with KO: as pop as it gets on here. includes flickering piano rolls & flutes throughout, and maybe a farting balloon
Jacknuggeted: such a catchy anthem! more hand-clapping, and all the cresendos/climaxes you'll ever need
Bijoux: just the explosion from the acid-xylophone intro into the drugged-drums transition, and then all those do-do-do's is well worth it. flurries of crashes, glockenspiels and warped drum-kits, as if the full instrumental blitzkrieg was just called on
Kid You'll Move Mountains: isn't this uplifting?!? the bent jazz man on the flute to start, and the twisted baroque marching band loop to end. i love this one.
Every Time She Turns Round: a take on Mercury Rev's Chasing a Bee, and great way to end it, esp. the joyous group bee-bopping at the end...
(of course, the others are killer too, but you'll read about them elsewhere.)
btw, the story behind the caribou/manitoba switch has been overplayed to no end (big deal, right?), but the album under the new monicker is quite different, and will blow you away just as much. this guy's our Next Big Thing, just you watch. i did. and they were soooo out into space at richard's on richard's last week!! all that crazy dual-drumming, all the chaos. just nuts. bravo!!!
signed,
the-mad-dancing-drunken-fool-by-stage-right-that-night
p.s. nothing wrong with 'old brown acid dunk tanks' if this is the output, eh dan?
from the perspective of ignorance.......2005-05-09
This is Dan Sniath's second album that is so completetly different compared his previous effort you'd think it was a different artist. I haven't heard Start Breaking My Heart so there'll be no compariosons here. I should also add that genreally speaking I like my music a little dark and towards the heavy end and that I'm not well versed in the 1960's or psychadelia. Consequently rather than reviewing tracks I've simply listed a series of word that come into mind when listening to this record- pretty much because I can't adequaltely review this record (i'd like to have included song references in my world list alas...)
I've lived on a dirt road all my life- bird calls, whispering vocals
Skunks- crickets, jazz improve saxaphone
Hendrix with ko- toe tapping, hand claps
Jacknuggeted- simple guitar chords, childlike hummings,
Why the long face- ???
Bijoux- raining chimes, folk rock, bah bah bahhhh bah bah bah and some violins at the end
Twins- a couple of guitar chords followed by drums from a high school football game (WOW!!!)
Kid you'll move mountains- flutes floating in the atmosphere, shimerring vocals, video game sounds
crayon- child giggles, xylophones, dogs barking and old school electronic effects
Everytime she turns round it's her birthday- vocally the strongest track, hummings and hand claps, jazz, silence
Up in Flames is founded on psychadelic shimmerings complete with hand claps, glockenspiles and animal sounds. I guess if you're going to label it you could try folktronica but which has recently come in for some stock by the stylus magazine people. Hope fully you've got a sense from my 'descriptions' that this album is composed of some wierd and wonderful instruments. The vocals are not a strong point of the album but the instrumentation is fascinating and there are some really melodic omoments. There's also a couple of pop-folk- toe tappers which are great- Hendrix with Ko for instance. I imagine if you like this record you'd probably have some Animal Collective records, mabye Boards of Canada, some psychadelic pop records. I didn't intially like it but know I think it's pretty good.
This Album Sounds Like..........2005-05-07
.......Laying on your back in a field of crayola-green grass, staring at the clouds and noticing the river and mountains behind it, and feeling the ground spinning beneath you, then getting up and walking down a path through the woods that, you soon notice, has golden writing on it, and then you see one of your best friends and shes smiling and you're smiling (zonked!) and so you and her and your other friends pile into the car and leave the park........and then you're driving and a record is playing and the trees are flying by and so are houses...

The Majestic.......2005-05-26
Flames of Spain takes us to the scent of a musical bouquet, it is rich in experience, expression and true love. This guy really plays from his heart, listen carefully and feel the vibe.
What more can I say,
Vani Ghougassian
A wonderful album.......2004-06-23
There are but a few classical guitarists in the world who are called masters. Nocy is one of them. Disregard the "music fan from Las Vegas"...he's out to lunch. Nocy's other CD's are equally beautiful (posted on his website...nocymusic.com). His music is from the heart. Pure joy to listen to.
Excellent !.......2004-06-06
I live here in Las Vegas & also employed with The Bellagio Hotel & Casino.I have had the pleasure of meeting Nocy & his band & they are a bunch of cool guys.I have watched them play Live, countless many times in The Fontana Lounge & also remember watching them play at The Mirage's Lagoon Saloon back in the mid 90's.Not only does Nocy have alot of fury & energy that comes out in his flamenco style of playing but he & the band can also play the most subtle music too!.Get the album & experience the energy!.
shallow.......2003-06-25
This is a disappointing CD. The music is rather shallow and outdated, with empty virtuosity. It could have been OK 15 years ago. These days there are plenty of guitarists that can play
faster than Nocy. Do not waste your money. Better to buy
Strunz and Farah, Ottmar Liebert, Paco de Lucia, etc.

Satoshi rips it up.......2000-05-03
this house track got me going in the rave scene...well I am not much into house. I for one am a Trance fanatic. But this track is so dark so mellow and groovy that I had to buy the single...the Satoshi Tommie Mix is the best in my opinion...Kelli Ali's voice is a nice touch and she's is my fav singer (Sneaker Pimps) so anyways buy this single...I also recomend Inspired by Satoshi as well...not like the dark style of Up In Flames but more of a funky groove sound that gets you going the vocals are unbelievable in that track GET IT!
Very sexy.......2000-04-16
Kelli Ali and Satoshi Tomiie...an awesome collaboration. I saw this CD single at a record store where I'm from, and I noticed the sticker said "featuring Kelli Ali of the Sneaker Pimps." I contemplated fora moment on whether I should get it, because I never heard the song before, but I said to myself "well, Kelli's on here, so it must rule." I was so right. This song is very VERY sexy. The radio mix is awesome, and the Satoshi Tommie mix is incredible! The Morales mix is very sweet, and Bedrock 1 mix is entrancing. The A Cappella mix is very interesting...no music...just Kelli singing. If you like this, some more suggestions are to get the Full Lick album from Satoshi Tomiie, the Becoming X album and other singles from the Sneaker Pimps.
Hot Song!.......2000-03-11
Satoshi and Kelli Ali's collaboration on "Up In Flames" is perfection. The music is dark and heavy progressive trance, while Kelli's vocals and lyrics are strange and gritty as usual. It makes for a fierce combination. The 12" mix is really keen, while the David Morales mix tries to smooth out the edges a bit. John Digweed's Bedrock mix is nice and long, putting his trancey spin on the track. Anyone who loved the Armand Van Helden mix of "Spin Spin Sugar" will surely be eager to have Kelli laying down vocals on another killer dance track.
