The First Studio Album was Published Originally by Now and Then Records Back in 1996 and Just Featured the Nucleus of the Band: Gary Hughes on Vocals, Vinny Burns on Guitars and Drummer Greg Morgan Both Coming from Dare. After Less Than One Year Came "The Name of the Rose" which Still Today is Considered by Many the Band's Best Album to Date.

If you're not already familiar with the majestic melodic rock of Ten, you've picked the perfect place to start! This excellent 2-CD package features Ten's self-titled debut album and the follow-up album the Name of the Rose. A few live bonus tracks are added for good measure.

Ten is one of the finest AOR/melodic rock bands on the planet. Led by singer/songwriter extraordinaire Gary Hughes, Ten combines the classic Journey/Foreigner/Bad English AOR sound with more majestic and dramatic hard rock elements. The result is some truly powerful melodic rock. Hughes has a real gift for writing AOR songs, and his rich voice is perfect for this kind of music. Guitarist Vinny Burns and a few other ex-Dare members make up the rest of the band, so you know the musicianship is first-rate as well. The albums are a bit ballad heavy, and the subject matter is, as one song title demonstrates, all about love. If you can get past that, chances are you're going to love these albums.

This 2-disc collection of Ten's first two albums gets my highest recommendation. Both are must-have albums for any AOR/melodic rock fan.

I have been listening to many 80's rock and metal group, but finding this band called "TEN" was really a blast! This album comes with first and second compilation. You may think it's just another typical rock ballads stuff. "It's all about love" has its crunchy rock feeling sound. "The lonliest place in the world" is very very sensational, yet comes with great guitar solo... it's awesome that you want to keep listening to it. The Vocal and guitar really worked well in blending their talents into this masterpiece. Gary Hughs also released some great solo albums. This guy can sing!

if ten had been around during the 80's they would have eclipsed bon jovi,poison and whitesnake. the're music is loaded with power yet its gracefull to the point that it has an etherial quality that makes you dream of the days when hard rock was something that was commercially successful. it's to hard these days to find anything original in the genre of rock but ten seems to find a intresting little niche. the main songs to listen for on the album are the title track "the name of the rose" whice has enough guitar thunder to rattle even the toughest stereo speakers and gary hughes's voice soars on "wait for you" a tale of egyptian love and spirtuality, while songs like "wildest dreams" and "goodnight saigon" envoke the memories of the days when rock was more than just a bunch of crunching guitars and bad rap lyrics thrown together. but the one track that blew me away was "soliloquy/lonliest place in the world", if there ever is a contest for the greatest love song ever written this one would would put them all to shame, through his(hughes)songwriting skills he tackles the meaning of love and through some kind of miracle puts that most powerfull of emotions into words. all in all this album is well worth the high price just for the sake of being able to say you own the greatest rock album that no one will ever hear..........long live rock & roll.

Brilliance!.......2006-02-24

I saw Ten live about two years ago and decided to purchase one of their albums. I was impressed by their live performance and even more impressed by their CD. This is rock is in its purest form people! Ten do sounds a little bit like whitesnake like the other reviewer said, but at the same time, its so hard to compare them to any other band because of their unique sound. The sound is very much heavier than most hair metal bands, with a lot more crunchiness and power to the guitar riffs and solo's. This combined with such a unique approach to progressive rock song writing, puts them in a league of their own. The guitar work is amazing, especially in the first song which seems to go on forever, as it combines slow acoustic rock breaking out into fast and furious powerchords and soloing. The songs are catchy and melodic and the lyrics actually mean something ie not the usual cheese and women etc. The vocalist fits well with the music, but he isn't really able to reach many high notes, and sometimes sounds quite plain, but it doesn't ruin the album at all as the album is so well orchestrated and instrumentally focused. The style of music seems to fit quite well with the themes too.
Overall, this is a great album and one that I stil listen to reguarly two years on. Unfortunately Ten have come onto the scene a little too late for major recognition which is a shame. But if your into well produced and thoughtful power rock like Thunder, Harem Scarem, Dream theatre etc, then you'll probably like this.

I'm not that familiar with epic hard rock band Ten as I only own two of their albums. I've had their 1999 release, Spellbound, for some time, but recently I picked up one of their earlier CDs, The Name of the Rose. Like they do on Spellbound, Ten sound a lot like Whitesnake here. Unlike Spellbound, though, The Name of the Rose is a less inspired piece of work.

1. "The Name of the Rose" - This song opens and closes with some solid acoustic guitar work and the riffs that fill most of the song are aggressive and engaging. Gary Hughes' baritone vocals are powerful making this one awesome rocker!
2. "Wildest Dreams" - A steady rocker, "Wildest Dreams" is very much in a Whitesnake vein. Vocalist Gary Hughes even sounds like Whitesnake front man David Coverdale at times. This song is another solid rocker.
3. "Don't Cry" - This song comes off as a bit too slick and cheesy so it never quite work for me. It's a cliched rocker.
4. "Turn Around" - A sappy ballad, "Turn Around" is just plain awful with it's boy band vocal harmonies and corny lyrics. If it wasn't for the heavy guitar parts in places, this song could easily be mistaken for something N'SYNC or the Backstreet Boys might inflict on us. Musical experimentation is fine, I guess, but this one does not work at all.
5. "The Pharaoh's Prelude: Ascension to the Afterlife" - This instrumental has a long mystical opening that eventually explodes into some furious guitar work.
6. "Wait for You" - Track five is really the intro to this song and it works. "Wait for You" is a pretty decent rocker even though the vocal melodies are a bit pedestrian. This isn't one of the highlights on the disc.
7. "The Rainbow" - Even though the lyrics are extremely cliched on this dark ballad/rocker, I still can't help but like this song with it's catchy vocal melodies and powerful vocals. It ain't great, but it works.
8. "Through the Fire" - Another mystical intro that shows the band experimenting with art-rock and middle-eastern flavorings, this quiet, mostly acoustical track showcases a band doing a ballad the right way. This song isn't sappy nor is it cliched as it moves in unexpected directions. The vocal melodies are beautiful yet unpredictable. While it doesn't quite make up for the dreadful "Turn Around", it does come close.
9. "Goodnight Saigon" - Sounding a lot like something Dokken might of come up with in the 80s, "Goodnight Saigon" is a fairly good rocker with some solid vocal melodies.
10. "Wings of the Storm" - Though this fast-paced rocker has some cheesy moments, the guitar work here is pretty good and makes up for most of the song's shortcomings.
11. "Standing in Your Light" - From the opening notes, you can tell you're in for an extremely sappy song as this ballad uses every cliche in the book. It even recalls the awful "Turn Around". Heaven help me, but this song is terrible.
12. "The Quest" - Another ballad with some fairly interesting vocal melodies, this tune doesn't quite take off. There are way too many sappy ballads on this disc.
13. "You're My Religion" - This raunchy, cliche-ridden rocker is as bad as the title suggests. The album ends on a mediocre note.

Though Ten shows occasional flashes of brilliance, the album mostly falls flat. Fortunately, future releases from Ten would make up for this average early disc. I would only recommend this CD to the Ten diehards who feel the need to complete their Ten collection or to those of you who really like 80s hard rock bands like Whitesnake. If you want a taste of how good Ten is on later releases, pick up Spellbound or Babylon.
