On its fifth album, Static X mines its familiar Prong-meets-Ministry sound to convincing effect over the course of twelve tracks of industrial metal darkness. Because the band's name alone makes comparisons to the likes of White Zombie, Korn, and Slipknot redundant, it's instead worth noting that Cannibal is arguably the group's leanest, most direct-sounding, and most metal album to date. And, if this album is a harbinger of the outfit's future ventures, then listeners are in for a eye-popping ride. Wayne Static and his cohorts are perhaps most effective on the stomping "Cuts You Up," the dark and discoesque "Behemoth," and the grand executioner of them all, "Destroyer." Still, the record suffers a bit for its intentions of brutality. The hit-and-run approach of Static's songwriting means that none of the tracks reach the four-minute mark and thus come off as vignettes rather than fully realized narratives. Static Fun.......2007-07-13

This is some nice evil disco here. Guitar Solo's and even some double bass give this Static Album more balls than their other albums. Its nice to see static playing this kind of music. Favorite songs are cannibal, no submission, chemical logic, chromo matic, cuts you up, and destroyer.

Not their best..........2007-06-27

Though Static X is one of my favorite bands, I feel like this album is not as musically inventive and solid as the last two have been (particularly Shadow Zone). Still a great album!

Another great album by Static-X.......2007-06-13

Static-X has revamped their sound more times than I honestly care to count, but I can say with all honesty that I've loved everyone of their albums. As most will say none have quite broken the barrier like Wisconson Death Trip, but you can't always compare things so heavily. Each album has had wonderful sounds to it and all in all Static-X is a great band and never a bad choice to buy. If you're the kinda person who can't stand change in a band and was deviasted when bands chance their sound then this is simply not the band for you, but if you have an open mind and enjoy sounds you can simply just rock out to then you wont find a better group to listen to.

All those reviews that have less than 5 stars are those who give up easily, can't listen to a song the second time. All it takes is some faith and a second or probably third listen and you'll all get hooked.

Wayne Static has always kept his consistency in keeping most of his songs to less than 3 minutes. It not only helps him focus on giving us the tightest music but gives us fans a treat, rather than listen to a 10 minute drab.

There are some obvious classics in this album - Cannibal, No Submission (my personal favourite), Chroma-matic and Behemoth (One of the greatest first 15 seconds I've listened to).

Static-X has given its heart and soul and gone all out in this album touching thrash and heavy metal.

Reptile, 40 ways, Electric Pulse etc. are songs that you will need to listen to a second time, probably a third for hard to convince people like me, but trust me you will get hooked I guarantee it!

And for all those reviewers who have given it 1,2 or 3 stars go back to your ipod and listen to it again and lets see if it changes your mind!

Best Album of the YEAR!!!.......2007-05-21

This CD will make you pumped & ready to kick a@%!! I listen to this album while working out & it keeps me going. It's non-stop heavy rocking from beginning to end. In my opinion, this is the best album of the year!

This British act, led by Harriet Wheeler, was always one of the more uplifting members of the shoe-gazer crowd, a point emphasized here by lovely lead single "Summertime" (which was released at precisely the wrong time of the year, sadly). The five-year hiatus from their last album has created a more mature, strum-along sound best heard on "Homeward," the guitar-textured "Another Flavor," and the orchestral "She." Out of the years and years of music I've heard in my life, this sublime album has held up over time to be among the five or six CD's I've listened to the most and still listen to regularly. Classic pop melodies with beautiful accoustic and electric guitar work, combined with mostly optimistic lyrics and longing, soaring, sensual vocals. It's both immediately accessible and subtle enough to improve with repeated listenings, with hooks that don't tire and a voice that always draws me back. Love it.

I can't say enough good things about this album. I was a bit put off by the extremely pop nature of the first single, Summertime. I took a chance and bought the record anyway and I'm so glad I did. Nearly every song on the record will get under your skin and they're all so gorgeous. I am fascinated by the concept of perfection in pop music and this album is THE epitome. The songwriting, the production and performance are all flawless. Static and Silence is so brilliant it virtually glows. If you could open a window to heaven I am certain this is what you would hear.

Notoriously reclusive and uninterested in being celebrities, the Sundays have released only three CDs since their 1988 formation. Naturally, hardcore fans salivate for more. Static & Silence showcases the Sundays at their best, and shows why, among all the bands in the alt-pop-rock genre, they are quite possibly the very best. There are numerous standout tracks here, "Summertime," When I'm Thinking About You," "Cry," So Much," to name a few. (The editorial reviewer apparently doesn't get the irony of releasing an ironic love song called "Summertime" in the first days of autumn). This CD is much more concise and catchy than Blind, yet they do meander into more atmospheric realms as well. They have managed to perform a delicate balancing act, bringing in strings, flutes, keyboards, all the while keeping their signature sound completely intact. Their sound has expanded greatly, they play more like a rock band than ever, Gavurin actually serves up a fairly ripping guitar solo in "So Much," even so the result does not betray any of their previous stuff (take that, U2 and REM!). Of course, the main attraction is the vocals of Harriet Wheeler, who hasn't lost her girlish appeal and delights listeners with many, many spine-tingling moments thanks to her lilting, lyrical soprano, adorable English accent, asymmetrical melodies, and inventive harmonies. Long after so many bands in this genre have jumped the shark, the Sundays' credibility is still very much intact.

In my opinion, their best album. It's soothing, deep, atmospheric and warm. Harriet's voice is sweet and hauntingly beautiful. It's such a shame there wasn't more music from the band after this album. But what a wonderful end. I truly am thankful for the music of the Sundays. This album is their most uplifting and every song is magnificent and lush.

I need more music from the sundays. I think Harriet wheeler has one of the best female voices. I love there music. If you like cranberries get this.

A genre-bending sonic onslaught, this disc is not for the faint-hearted. Static-X skillfully blend angry staccato guitar, dark metallic noise, and mutating synthesizer washes to construct an ominous (though occasionally humorous) wall of sound. Lead vocalist Wayne Static's high-energy delivery alternates from whisper to roar on tracks such as "Bled for Days" and "I Am," and he often uses his voice as a potent rhythmic sound effect, as on "Push It" and "Sweat of the Bud." Tony Campos's distorted bass riffs and drummer Ken Jay's confident beats add a human feel to the mechanical rhythms, adroitly creating the tight grooves of "Otsegolation" and "Fix," as well as the rigid swing in "Stem." Wayne Static and Koichi Fukuda skillfully combine guitars and keyboards on "The Trance Is the Motion" to produce crashing waves of sound, while their programming on "December" results in a more subdued piece to close the album. --Mark McCleerey

What's so bad about WI?.......2007-08-01

Static-X burst onto the scene around my junior/senior year of highschool and instantly became very popular with my friends and I. Push It became an instant classic and the title track remains one of their best songs. While this was their most successful outing, they have continued to release solid cds over the greater part of the last decade. Referred to as "evil disco" by many, they combine elements of industrial metal, thrash, and hard rock to make their mark on the heavy music scene. No one sounds like Static-X, and while they stick pretty close to their formula, somehow they keep making fun music with solid hooks and good head-banging riffs and beats. If you are getting into them, I would start here, as this is their strongest record and has four hit songs on it.

The first (and only) true Static-X album..........2007-04-06

Being that I just wrote a review for the abysmal "Cannibal," in which I stated that the band will never again be what they were when they created "Wisconsin Death Trip" (i.e., a good band), I felt compelled to write a glowing review of this album. It was truly cutting-edge; so much so that the band could never approach it's ingenuity and originality again. Instead, they've morphed into a Korn/NIN monstrosity that seems to only want to make retreads of songs that failed to gain our respect the first time around. What a disappointment this band turned out to be. With every album they have released since this one, I've been sincerely disappointed and have only wanted to hear something in the same league of their original. Alas, at this point, we can conclude that it will likely never happen. This band was once one of the truly exciting acts in metal, and it's a real shame that they've become what they have...in a word, boring.

attention all walmart customers, Why did rate this CD only two? are you real heavy metal fans, are you just jelous because rap has no talent, because metal bands acually know about music, know how to pay an instrument? In order to understand and enjoy Static x you must first sit down and give it a try, acually listen to the songs. This is a five star easy. Static x is one of the heaviest bands I have ever heard. they easily stands up to other great bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Iron maiden, disturbed, and system of a down. Oh and Godsmack.

I'm in love. This has to be one of the greatest albums of all time. My personal favorite anyway. Not my favorite band but damn near close. All of the tracks are awesome but among the best are track 11 "the trance is the motion" and track 3 "bled for days"... you know what I'll just stop right there because, like I said, I'm in love. In love with the album as a whole.

X's Best Album.......2006-12-15

For what it's worth, this is probably the best of the Static X' albums. If you're going to get one, this is it.

Static-X and their 1999 debut, Wisconsin Death Trip, seemed to garner more interest for singer Wayne Static's gravity-defying hairstyle than for the L.A.-based lineup's genre-defying music. The aptly titled sophomore outing, Machine, is the worthy, if expected, follow-up. The intense, mechanized, futuristic metal found here comes across as a thrash version of Orgy, with a dollop of Ministry and a dash of Powerman 500 tossed in for extra punch. The intense, short bursts that are "Get to the Gone" and "This Is Not" are forceful and demanding, thanks to Static's growl-scream and the rhythmic power of the music. The spooky "Cold" and epic album closer, "A Dios Alma Perdida," would be suitable for a horror-movie soundtrack, while "Otsego Undead" kicks off with a welcome organic drum sound, though the song never really goes anywhere--a problem that resurfaces throughout Machine. Indeed, the album's revved-up vibe, monster riffs, and irresistible energy are all ultimately held down by a dearth of memorable songs. --Katherine Turman

After WI Death Trip, they were primed for a let-down, because that was such a great record. And this is a let-down, to a certain extent, because it doesn't pack the emotional wallop that WDT did. This is their worst record, but still better than most of the junk out there nowadays. Check out their new one, Cannibal.

Great cd.......2007-04-18

Ill make this short and sweet: Its not Wisconsin Death Trip but its pretty close to it. Why cant people let artist change? Metallica made some pretty crappy music after The Black Album but not all of it was bad. Just because no song gets stuck in your heads like Push It doesnt mean this band isnt great. I do recommend you avoid Shadow Zone and Cannibal. Those cds arent the best examples of how great this band is.

A fairly good & definitely underrated album.......2006-09-15

Though the same basic qualities and ingredients which helped define Static-X's debut, 1999's "Wisconsin Death Trip," are brought back for this, their sophomore album, it's unfounded and confusing to claim "Machine" is simply a rehash. Though not exactly an innovative musical departure or creative step forward for the band, anybody with ears should be able to tell you (from listening to just the first thirty-seconds of this disc) that Static-X turbo-charged their sound at least three-fold. "WDT" sounded influenced equally by heavy and industrial metal, and sounded in the same league as classic Ministry and White Zombie. "Machine," on the other hand, draws influence only from heavy metal and...uh...heavier metal. The result is a record which is unashamed to rock hard and pack an immense punch.

Frontman Wayne Static's commanding vocals, which alternate between visceral bellows and freaky howls, are laid on top of mountains of massive, revved-up riffs, hard hitting drums, breakneck tempos, deep, bludgeoning grooves, and huge, roaring rhythms. Wayne's occasional use of techno-ish keyboards try to create a tiny bit of ambience, but they're almost always drowned out by the bullying, wall-of-sound guitars. Lastly, producer Ulrich Wild also had a hand in the songs' crushing impact, because every second of this disc sounds the utmost clear, forceful, and crisp.

After a brief, kind of funny intro called "Bien Venidos," the first real song, "Get To The Gone," tears your head off. Its beginning consists of brutal, rapid-fire, pulverizing power chords, pounding beats, and long, primal screams. This song is a shockingly loud and intense adrenaline onslaught which will probably scare unsuspecting listeners almost to death. And from there until the album's end, the intensity level almost never relents. The very catchy yet very depressing "Black And White," and the hooky, chanting vocals and despair-ridden lyrics in the climactic chorus of "This Is Not" are two other obvious highlights. And "Otsego Undead" (which is a fairly restrained number featuring twinkling synthesizers, slow drum beats, spacey feedback, and punching riffs), the bone-chilling "Cold," the Fear Factory-esque, adrenaline-charged thrash attack and memorable vocals of "Structural Defect," the superbly ominous and kind of creepy title track, and the slow, mysteriously subdued instrumental, "A Dios Alma Perdida" (which draws the album to a close), are also of note.

This kind of music almost inevitably comes with a few drawbacks, though. "Machine" isn't nearly as timeless or original as "Wisconsin Death Trip," mainly because it lacks "live" energy, and thus sounds significantly more mechanical. And a couple parts here (see "Permanence") are overly reliant on big riffs, but the actual song doesn't really go anywhere or progress. Be warned: "Machine"'s harsh, maniacal, crushing, discordant, amelodic sound, one-dimensional vocals, and typically depressing lyrics will surely be hard for some people to swallow. But this disc is still a worthwhile listen for fans of Static-X's debut (and even if you didn't like it, you should still give "Machine" a chance!), and also for everybody who enjoys techno/nu/industrial-thrash metal.

I really liked Wisconsin Death Trip, so when Wayne and the boys released "Machine" 2 years later I was all over it. I wasnt disappointed, but it was missing something...

Wisconsin Death Trip had a more Idustrial sound to it. Machine is just more of a straight edge Alternative Metal album. Sure, there are some Industrial overtones to the album, but not like in WDT. Thats the reason it only really get 4.5 stars from me (damn, Amazon needs to change their rating system!).

All in all this is a good album, just dont expeect another Wisconsin Death Trip.

That's because it's so godly not to mention heavy! I mean, if you're looking for machine-gun double bass, dual, shredding guitars, twisted solos and growls and screams that make your hair stand on end, this is the band to listen to! From the first few notes you can definitely tell they know how to play their instruments, write clever, catchy songs and sing like the Dark Lord himself! Oops! After just thinking about this music I have to change my pants again!

Well I hope you got my sarcasm. I don't know what to say about Static-X. They are easily one of the worst metal bands out there. At least they don't have all the sales like the other overrated, s**t, metal bands out there like Linkin Park.

Seriously, this band is crap. They also look like a bunch of homos too. Yeah, you're so hardcore when you spike your hair 3 feet high or sport dreadlocks. You're also hardcore when you wear clothes even the kids from Hot Topic sneer at. Oh, and you're definitely a good guitar/bass player when you hold your instrument so low to the ground that you have to bend over to play it. (They're very familiar with that position so it comes very naturally to them.)

What can I say? Less rim jobs, more practice and more effort when it comes to writing. Oh yeah, they also need to stop trying to get back at your parents. I know they hate mommy and daddy for not giving them ALL the money they wanted and for not giving them rides to the mall, but when you're 30 it's time to let it go.

But like I said, extreme metal at its finest.

A very important album!.......2006-12-06

I just looooooooooooooooove The Misfits so much! They're truly like no other! Punks love 'em, metalheads love 'em! A brutal punk legendary sound with horror themes! With great songs like TV casualty, 138, Angelf*ck, Return of the fly, Attitude and so much more! There's no reason to hate this, if so...what the hell is wrong with you? This album and Earth A.D. are the ones you need I also prefer to get Collection 1. Collection 2 is good but most of those are heard on Samhain albums too( Danzigs other project before DANZIG ). If you're just now getting into misfits and you don't know which to get. Static Age is what I recommend, this is where the Fiend Frenzy began! WE ARE 138-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-EEEEIIIGHT!

Easily in the Top Ten of Rock or Punk.......2006-11-17

I can't add much that others haven't already added emphatically, but I'll say this: Static Age houses some of the most retardedly catchy and thrilling songs I've ever heard. "Some Kinda Hate", "Last Caress" and others run barely over the two minute mark, but they somehow seem to squeeze in the energy and thump of a hundred five-minute hardcore songs combined. They're so perfectly written and executed that they have no competition, in hard rock or punk of any hybrid inbetween (except maybe The Pixies "Doolittle"). My antiseptic description does nothing to convey how easily these songs get your blood boiling; listening to them is like ingesting steroids aurally.

I've played these two minute masterpieces over and over and somehow they never loose their edge, which is amazing considering how short and condensed they are. I mean, there's nothing new you'll hear in them the more you listen, no new sounds or qualities that spring to your ear with repeat listens, and yet they're endlessly rewarding. You don't need twenty layers of sound or subtle texturing to warrant more spins, the songs are the reason in and of themselves.

5 stars is not enought..........2006-10-14

I own every Danzig-era Misfits release and to me this is hands down the best one of them all. A solid album with 17 awesome tracks plus a bonus track of studio screw ups. Every song on here is a great listen plus the sound quality isnt that bad compared to his other recordings. There are alot of reviews claiming Walk Among Us is there defining masterpiece but I disagree; its great but not as great as Static Age.

Let's Leave The Best For....FIRST!!!.......2006-07-27

Static Age is the very first Misfits album, and it's them sounding more sophisticated than ever. Believe me, this is different than Walk Among Us, and MUCH different than Earth AD/Wolfsblood. This is where The Misfits had a punk sound, but also fused with something that sounds more like slower 50's/60's rock & roll. Like I said, there are slower songs on this album. But does that mean it's bad? Hell no! It's Misfits dammit!
Whether you're a punk fan, or just a straight up rock & roll fan, this album will suit you well. It contains some of my absolute favorite Misfits songs, like (my overall favorite)Hybrid Moments, We Are 138, Angelf*ck, Attitude, Bullet, Theme For A Jackyl, She, and In the Doorway. But it's all awesome. Like I said, this is IMO the best Misfits album ever!
Yes, even when they were just starting, Misfits had something that no one else had. It's just a special essence in them that no one else had, and it makes them better than alot(and I do mean ALOT) of other bands, today and even back then.
Overall, this is my favorite Misfits album. Not even Walk Among Us beat this. There's just something about this album that just makes it better to me than the others.
Buy this album the next time you have some cash. I promise you won't regret it!

Amazing, breathtaking........2006-09-02

This CD is absolutely amazing. As an emotion filled seventeen year old teen, I've always loved and identified with all of JEW's works since I jumped on the Bleed American bandwagon in 2001. This CD is by FAR my favorite though, with Clarity in a close second. Static Prevails is just filled with so much emotion that's hard to put in to words but is so easy to identify with and relate to, especially at this time of my life. This CD can invoke a variety of emotions in me. At times it's made me smile with pleasant memories of a more carefree time of my youth, and at others it's made me cry remembering lost love and friends that drifted away. It really is hard to put in to words, but this album is just an all around amazing experience. Not only is this my favorite of JEW's works, but it's my favorite album of all time.

If your reading this review, most likely you've already heard of Jimmy Eat World, and already know that they wont let you down with anything less than amazing music. So you are reading this reviews because you love JEW and you like to see when other people agree. JEW RULES!!!

This Cd is amazing, if you have not heard it, then i suggest you buy it without a second thought, because you know you wont regret it. In my oppinion the greatest song on this album is the emotion filled "Anderson Mesa" In this phenominal track you feel the Emotion Jim Adkins portrays the extrem happiness Like your in a dream, in which your floating and wind is carrying you out into a field of sweet sweet rock. This is a great cd go buy it and love it as much as i do!

My Favorite Album of All Time.......2006-05-27

If you've noticed, there's plenty of reviewers saying this is their favorite album ever. I've got tingles down my spine writing this right now, that's a good album.

I have yet to find another album that sounds anything close to this. With tons of RAW, EMOTIONAL, screamy vocals, and plenty of beautiful little indie-style riffs with breathy vocals to complement how the intense emotion leaves these guys drained and helpless, this album can take you from screaming along to tears in a matter of minutes. Example "Digits" starts of with some unique guitar and drums, setting up the theatrical 2 and half minute burst of energy followed by Jim crying "i really want to care when you say 'I'll change that.'/Just don't feel a thing when you say 'We'll get there someday.'"

While most people might have a hard time listening to the vocals, if you're into raw and energetic stuff (i.e. GUK's - Four Minute Mile, Fugazi, and other raw emo-ey stuff) you will LOVE this album.

This is the most honest and heart-felt piece of work in my huge music collection of indie-punk-emo kinda rock. If you don't love it immediately, you will in a year. I promise.

Good for a bunch of high school kids!.......2006-05-23

I'm a huge JEW fan, but I am not fond of this album. The vocals are rough and the songwriting isn't near as catchy as their latest records. However, I have to give them some credit. They recorded this album when they were in high school! Not bad for a bunch of high school kids!

the noisy beginings of Jimmy Eat World. Here the bands major label debut showcases the begining stages but here they dont sound anything like what they've become.Here the band dabbles in noisey emotive-punk and some dabbles in post hardcore. the songs arent particularly tuneful but the enrgy is defiently evident here in this btahc of songs. Jim adkins voice here is virtually unreconizable to his signature tenor of late (a similar case with Silverchair....getting more and more tuneful as time went on). This is probablly not something you should start off with this band

Some songs selected from their last independent release "Wrapped in Plastic", Sugarcult was picked up by a major label, and boom, they explode onto the world. Working their songs into soundtracks like Van Wilder and American Pie, Sugarcult took America by storm. This album is full of incredible tunes, with great hooks and melodies. Song Like "Pretty Girl", "Stuck in America" and "Bouncing Off The Walls" scream for this album to be heard and played loud. The songs are about love, life, break-ups, new relations, ect...all of what makes a good rock album. Everyone interested in Sugarcult must have this album, you will not be disappointed.

Wow.......2005-07-31

This is actually the best cd I have ever listened to. Usually I like only a few songs on a cd, but I actually love every single song here. I'd classify the whole cd as pop-punk, but each song has an underlying musical element. Their earlier release of Wrap Me Up in Plastic, is also fabulous.

I looked everywhere for this CD. Over the course of 2 years I had finally found it at a Bust Buy. There was one left. I didn't really stop to think about buying it, so I just grabbed it. I put it in my CD Player and was amazed to here such good music by this band... this band i thought was just going to be another hunk of scum on the CD market. Actually, the suprise came to be that it wasn't at all. Sugarcult's Start Static has a cool kind of thing in their music.. i really dont know what there is.. but i find it similar to American Hi-Fi ( Comparing BOUNCING OFF THE WALLS to FLAVOR OF THE WEAK ) ... Anyways, majority of the songs on this CD are ' superb ' and worth buying for just the few that really stand out.

The Good Days Of Sugarcult.......2005-04-16

I love this cd. When I think of Punk I think of the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, the Clash, and of course Sugarcult. I've been listening to Sugarcult for quite a while now. My sister actually got me into this band when she used to live in California 3-4 years ago. The very first song i heard from them was "Say I'm Sorry." With lyrics like "If you wanna get down, wrap me up in plastic because i'm feeling pornographic now... I think i'm feeling sick again we're making up with sex again," who wouldn't laugh and enjoy them.

Start Static overall is a great cd. I love every song on it. My favourite on here would have to be "Hate Every Beautiful Day" because it's the perfect song to listen to on a bad day when nothing's going your way. Pump this up on your stereo and the bad day blues will slowly disappear. "Faces in the crowd, fake smiles for smiles... I wish it was raining because i hate every beautiful day." After the movie Van Wilder, who doesn't know "Bouncing Off the Walls?" This is a great song to listen to when you've had that right amount of sugar and caffeine together. Your heart rate goes up just listening to it because it gets you going. I love the way I feel just listening to it.

"Pretty Girl (the way)" is my next favourite song. When i first heard it i'd just gotten out of a relationship where i was cheated on and i listened to this song for 17 hours straight on repeat. It's one of those songs that you can't get tired of. I really love it. You feel a connection with it. HAHAHA, now to a song that we sing to my friend, "You're the One." Lol. This song has been dubbed hers by all of her friends. She drives all of us crazy but we love her. This song has a very good beat, it makes you wanna dance, and bang your head around. "How Does it feel" has this awesome guitar going in the beginning. I just wanna dance to it as well. "Well i'm back for some more, round two was a bore... and it's 1:45 and i'm feeling alive, i've got it all and it's your last call. There's somebody new and she's better than you. You've been replaced by a prettier face, so look who's crying now..."

OVERALL THIS CD IS GREAT. Even though Amazon doesn't carry "Wrap Me In Plastic" this is a great substitute for it. This cd gives you Sugarcult straight foreward.

One of 2001's best power pop albums.......2005-04-03

Start Static is an excellent CD, full of songs most can relate to. I have to say that Start Static is more "punky" or alternative than Palm Trees And Power Lines (which really only has 2-3 good songs, and they're all singles).

The only bad thing about this album (and it's not Sugarcult -- or its label's -- fault. It's that half of the songs on this album are heard in the film Van Wilder ("Bouncing Off the Walls", "Stuck In America", "How Does It Feel" and the rest of Start Static is plastered all over Van Wilder's DVD menus).

14-17 year old males is really this album's demographic, but so is Van Wilder. Start Static would probably sound dull to anyone who bought this CD because of the film.

If you like, say, uh... Fall Out Boy or, oh, American Hi-Fi (also on the Van Wilder soundtrack), you'll like Sugarcult. Recommended.

A little better.........2007-07-18

Overall a pretty good disc if ya like TFK or FM Static. I gotta disagree on "The Next Big Thing" though, I didn't think that song was so hot at all. Best song (I.M.O.) is Waste Of Time, although the riff is similar to TFK's rarity Small To Say. The album sounds a little less punkish and a little more soft rockish, so I think it's a slight improvement from the last album. Tonight and Moment Of Truth are pretty good too. Anyway, good to hear from this band again. Can't wait for the next TFK album too, as long as it's better than their last one.

The coolest, catchiest, most real and heartfelt fun songs you might ever hear. If you like this, try expanding your universe with the Subdudes...start with their "Annunciation" album perhaps. They are a band made up of older dudes than FM Static, so they are a lot less punk, but sound just as sweet and just as sincere.

Completely Ashamed.......2007-03-07

I was the hugest FM Static fan after hearing their previous release. I was so excited to get their new one. What happened to these guys? It's just not good! By the 10th track, they finally warm up, but still are not near the quality of the entire previous album. Many of the first 9 songs are just dumb. The lyrics are dumb and the music isn't much better. Maybe I'm missing what the guys of FMS were trying to accomplish with this release, but for the happy fan, it's a let down.

Not Worth the Wait.......2006-08-13

Towards the middle of FM Static's sophomore release, there is a tremendous song titled "Next Big Thing." However, the rest of the album is watered down, filled with ballads, and absurd lyrics. This would be tolerable if the songs were good, but only a few are. It seems like they are going through the motions on this disc, which is WAY below the standards they set on their debut album. The melodies are there, but the performances are lacking energy and it is way overproduced. The new Hawk Nelson or Stellar Kart CD is a better way to spend your money.

Good album, but not straight away..........2006-08-10

If you're buying the long-expected sequal to 2003's "What Are You Waiting For?" expecting an album with exactly the same formula (as I was), you are going to be disappointed.
Not to say "Critically Ashamed" isn't any good, because it is. But the initial spin I gave it left me feeling disappointed because it wasn't what I had been waiting for, for so long. After more spins though, I got over that fact and started enjoying the songs. Talking about the songs, let's get into a track-by-track review:

#1: "Hope The Rock Show Goes Good"
This is a classic intro, with a young relative of Trevor wishing him luck for the show.

#2: "Flop Culture"
First time round, this song sounds like it could be on "What Are You Waiting For?" with the rest of it's songs, music-wise. But the choice of subject in the lyrics isn't too interesting, it's more about dissing Michael Jackson, Avril Lavigne, Britney Spears and MTV. I'd prefer that they stick to singing about girls, summer and school. Still, it's a catchy upbeat song.

#3: "Six Candles"
The second song on the album and already the first lower-tempo song. Strong lyrics and appropriate music accomanying them. This is when you first notice that this album is definitely going in a different direction than the debut album, as the lyrics are much slower than before and the intonation is not quite "happy".

#4 "The Next Big Thing"
This is one of the most catchy songs on this album and probably the one which is going to get stuck in your head frequently. Like Flop Culture, it sounds like a song you'd expect from FM Static, but the execution is once again that tiny bit different which separates it from the debut album material. It really is a sing-a-long track though.

#5 "America's Next Freak"
Another song which doesn't really have an energetic feeling to it, moreso a mature, emotional feeling. It does it well though, as it's just as catchy as the upbeat tracks on the album.

#6 "Tonight"
"Critically Ashamed"'s equivalant of "Hey Now" from the debut album, except this time the song isn't entirely accoustic. It's another emotional song which comes with strong lyrics.

#7 "The Video Store"
For me, this is one of the poorer songs. The chosen subject just doesn't seem quite right, obsessing over a girl you met once in a video store and never forgetting that day. It sounds kind of lame, and that feeling is amplified by the "Ah, ah, ah"'s in the chorus and the Fred Durst bashing in the second verse.

#8 "Girl Of The Year"
A fun song with fun lyrics. No important lyrics here, but it doesn't hurt the song. This is one of the songs which attains the "What Are You Waiting For?" feeling the most.

#9 "Nice Piece Of Art"
The song itself isn't brilliant, but it has a killer chorus which you look forward to from the beginning of each verse. It's another slow song though, of which it becomes apparant this far in that the album is 50% (or maybe a bit more) slower songs. They're all good though, so it's not a downside, unless you're expecting more of the debut album.

#10 "What It Feels Like"
This song isn't anything special. It's okay, but not the song which is going to be played the most on this album. There's nothing wrong with the lyrics, but the execution of the song is forgetful.

#11 "Waste Of Time"
This song surprised me, in that even though it wouldn't blend in with the other songs from the debut album (though it's not particularly slow like "Nice Piece Of Art"), I think of it as one of, if not the best track on this album. The verses and the chorus are great and the music sounds great as well.

#12 "Moment Of Truth"
The closing track on this album is an almost exact copy of the closing track "Hey Now" from the debut album. This is really not a bad thing, as the slow, accoustic "Hey Now" is one of my favourite tracks from that album. Therefore, this track is destined to attain the same status in my books. The intonation of the vocals is perfect and the guitar accompanying them sounds just like it should.

All in all, this album is far from a disappointment, once you get over the surprise of your expectations being off. The album was advertised by FM Static as "a summer album which will stick with you paired with the memories of the best summer you ever had", but it's not that. "What Are You Waiting For?" is, as whenever I hear a song from it, I remember Summer and Fall 2003 vividly. That album felt overall more energetic and bouncy to me.
One thing the successor has in common with it's predecessor is the squeaky-clean lyrics, but that's okay, because I wasn't expecting different as the band is classified as Christian Rock, and I if want to hear "tough" lyrics, there are plenty of other bands I listen to which can give me that. One could say that the change in this album from energetic bouncy pop-rock to slightly less bouncy and slower is simply the maturing of the band, but I don't need FM Static to mature; again, there are enough bands who mature with each coming album, and after all, FM Static *is* a side-project.

So, finally, don't think I'm advising against buying this album, I'm just trying to explain why I preferred FM Static's debut album more. I like this album a lot and therefore give it 4 out of 5 stars! Buy it, give it a chance, and I'm sure you'll like it as well.

why did you give this Cd a two overall? are you jelious because rappers have no talent, can't play an instrument. How can you not like Static x, If you like bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Disturbed, System of a down, Godsmack, Iron maiden, Anthrax, Stone sour, Slip knot, Korn, and rob zombie, you have to like Static x. They are easily a five and are in my top five all time favorites. Stop believing the people a walmart!! In order to understand and enjoy the thrash of Static x, you must sit down, give the songs a try, and acually listen to most of the song, not just the begining, like most of you do. You can't judge a song, just by what the begining sounds like. It might suck at first, but listen to what it has to show for.

The best songs on this CD are The Only, Dead World, Monster, and destroy all.

The energy on this album is Crunked up!
I like his singing voice it ain't bad.
It in my opinion sounds better than Korn's voice.

Rush right out and waste 15 bucks on this unoriginal formulaic BOLOGNA!!!! POO POO! hey isnt nu-metal dead yet? Get Children of Bodom or Chimaera or Megadeth or Opeth or even Machine Head and use this disc for a frisbee. Im still pissed I actually bought it.

I absolutely love every track on this album. Theres more a more Industrial and dark sound to this album than the previous Machine album. Shadow Zone also contains many memories of good times for me.

Shadow Zone isnt exactly as heavy as Machine, but it makes up for it in the lyrics and overall sound of the album. If you liked the last two Static-X albums then you'll be sure to love this one. Some favorite tracks of mine are Otsegolectric, Dead World, The Only, Shadow Zone, and Destroy All.

some friend of mine was braggining on about how good this band where so try the out i borrowed his cd i tried to get into it but its impossible since all the songs sounds the same and all the riffs are a bit dumb to be honest i think this album lacks imagination i think especially because of wayne statics vocals witch i do not enjoy this is my first expierience of the band it wasnt a good one im not furmilliar with there previous work but they must be able to do better than this

...and you'll find it to sound like so many other bands. Yes it's melodic and maybe a little catchy. However, it's forgetable even if you give it a listen through.

Thank god you picked up this album instead of Faso Latido. Faso Latido was basically ASL experimenting and it went horribly wrong, they belong here in the screamo/hardcore industry where they started. I picked up And Don't Forget to Breath awhile back and fell in love with them and when Faso Latido came out I basically just ignored it and denied it ever existed. This album put my faith back in them, its a good return but its not ADFTB. A lot of reviews say this is just like that album but i've yet to find one in more than two songs. ASL has matured a lot. I liked their old style, they seem like a glam rock band or something now haha. [Totally just kidding]

Anyways, pick this album up. It's pretty solid. If you like this album, don't think twice, just go buy And Don't Forget to Breath right now.

i cant stress enough how amazing this album is.

Everything feels so put together, and thought out, nothing like the sophomore slump "Faso Latido" (which i recently purchased just because i've developed such a love for A Static Lullaby.) which felt thrown together a week and a half before hitting the studio. A Static Lullaby (the album) shows a darker side to ASL. I like this side, it doesnt seem so pop punk as Faso Latido did.

the lyrics are well written

the scream vocals are full of adrenaline

the melodic vocals are original and sound perfect.

the instruments all flow.

this album is perfect. it pwns.

A Return To Form.......2006-10-14

"...And Don't Forget To Breathe" was (and still is) one of my favorite screamo/post-hardcore records, and it was a real gem for it's time. 2005 saw the band departing Ferret records in search of greener pastures, and thus also brought in the release of the band's sophomore disc, "Faso Latido", which was widely regarded as both a commercial failure and huge disappointment to long time fans. So with much turmoil in the ranks (ASL was dropped from their major label, and 3 of the 5 members exited the band), Dan and Joe were basically handed the challenge of rebuilding A Static Lullaby from the ground up. And their Self-Titled album is probably the best thing they could have ever possibly released right now.

"Faso Latido" saw the band ditching most of its aggressive elements (screams, heavier music parts) in favor of a more toned down and melodic sound. This was a huge problem since one of ASL's biggest strengths was the way they combined beauty and dissonance so well. Granted at the time Screamo had become the meal ticket, but the album left its fair shares of bad tastes in many fan's mouths. Well this problem has been fully addressed with "A Static Lullaby." First of all Joe is screaming again. And screaming very well at that. His screams on the last record were fairly weak compared to ADFTB (when he actually got a vocal spot), but with this offering it sounds like he hasn't lost a bit of his ferocity. The music is also much more interesting than anything the band attempted on "Faso Latido". The new members all show they are more than capable of filling the large shoes they stepped into.

"Hang 'Em High", "Annexation Of Puerto Rico" and "The Art Of Sharing Lovers" all recall the energy of ADFTB, and make for some of the best tracks the album has to offer. However more melodic pieces like "Stare At The Air" and "Static Slumber Party" are no slouches. The best thing is that Joe and Dan both see almost equal vocal time over the course of the album, whereas the last record was very lopsided in Dan's favor. The guitar work at times is aggressive, yet it can instantly transform into somber, melodic sections as seen on "The Collision" and "Eager Cannibals". The bass pounds with vintage fury, and the drums are far more interesting and rhythmic than anything attempted on the last record.

Overall "A Static Lullaby" feels like the record that should have came after "...And Don't Forget To Breathe." All sides of A Static Lullaby's dynamic sound are fully represented on the disc, whether it be the aggressive or the melodic. If "Faso Latido" left you wanting more, then this is the record that will make you a fan again. It's a little rough around the edges, but it's far more interesting and fulfilling than anything that was attempted by these guys last time around. If you had lost faith, rest assured their Self Titled album is indeed their return to form. Fans of the band should not be without this.
