Eschewing much of the stardust that the worldwide success of Dire Straits' Brothers in Arms virtually guaranteed him, Mark Knopfler's belated and halting solo career since has often seemed willfully spectral, if ever driven by a quietly intense musical restlessness. To hear Mark in a live setting really gives you the sense of the power of this talent. The recording is crisp and deep. Immaculate as well as spontaneous, Mark delivers his collection of songs with passion, integrity and even a touch of humor. A trail blazer for more then 30 years, Mark's talent is seemingly, like great wine, only sweetening and deepening with age! Bravo Mr. Knopfler!

Intelligent Music from a Master.......2006-11-17

Mark Knopfler never disappoints. His nuanced, inflected tones come through beautifully on this gift from the man. "Back t Tupelo" really shines here, much improved over the Shangri-la version. The up tempo version of "Donnegan's Gone" and "Everybody Pays" bring them to life, and the smirking on "Song for Sonny Liston" shows enough grit to please.
This is a gem, with superb musicians playing together and having a grand time of it. Richard Bennett is a gem -- his playing showcases Knopfler beautifully. Enjoy.

never a regret.......2006-07-09

I begged my sister for this cd for Christmas and it has, quite literally, never left the car since December 25. It has its own place on the passenger seat like a talisman, my own audio good luck charm. In some odd way I don't feel right if I can't look over and see him on the cover, gazing off into space. No Mark Knopfler collection is complete without this, a sort of studio-work-within-a-studio-work. He always manages to put a different spin on every new rendition, a fresh energy, a wry nuance that wasn't there before. I have honestly never really gotten his attachment to "Rudiger" - one of my least-favourites - but I don't question his inclusion of it here. It certainly connects the old with the new, which perhaps was his intent. I love any variation of "Everybody Pays" (a sentiment I have always wished I could render so succinctly),and I've come to be very fond of "Stand Up Guy" and "Donegan's Gone" (the man wasn't just one of Mark's heroes, Mark eventually got to be friends with Lonnie Donegan, so it makes sense he should include this song - Mark has always given credit where it was due.)I am not ashamed to say I would and will stand by everything I've heard from Mark Knopfler - I fully appreciate the continued excellence of a member of my own generation in a world that increasingly snubs those who have earned better - and having said that, I am glad to have this collection of songs in my library. I wouldn't feel whole without it.

Knopfler fanatic........2006-07-05

The CD is one that everyone who loved "Shangrila" will love. My only complaint is that the CD skips. Not sure if this is someone getting rid of second rate pressings or whatever, but I've never had a CD that is brand new skip out of the case.

If you liked Marks album "Shangri-La", you'll love this live CD. He sounds great and the versions are all a little different.

Word of Tinariwen, or rather one of its members, first spread in 2001 when Lo'Jo played a festival in Mali. When the sound system was stolen en route to the festival site, Tinariwen guitarist Kheddou--a celebrated desert warrior--found the bandits and made them give it back. The band actually formed in 1982 in Libyan leader Muammar al-Qaddafi's rebel camp, but these desert warriors soon concentrated on their Malian homeland. As with their countrymen Ali Farka Toure and Boubacar Traoré, there is a direct line between Tinariwen's desert songs and the blues. Composed of six guitarists-vocalists, a percussionist, and three backup singers, the group plays hypnotic blues figures that fit nicely next to galloping local rhythms. The singers take turns telling their stories, often in call-and-response style. --Tad Hendrickson

I am a person with extremely catholic taste in music. But, up 'til now, I've reacted to so-called "world beat" music as I would if I'd seen a coffee stand advertising fair trade shade-grown organic blend: I'd conclude their heart's in the right place, then run quickly in the other direction.

I stumbled upon Tinariwen completely by accident. Robert Plant had compiled a music CD for a British music magazine, and along with his old blues favorites, he included "Imidiwaren." The track was not only a stand-out favorite, it was a total earworm. I broke down and ordered Radio Tisdas Sessions, and several months later, it's still at the top of my playlist. Somewhere along the way, I also picked up Tinariwen's other CD, Amassakoul (also incredible), and am currently obsessively seeking out any track I can possibly find from this incredible band.

What can I say about the music? I know next to nothing about the band itself, and actually learned a lot by reading several highly informed reviews here. Needless to say, I can't make heads or tails of the band's lyrics (though at this point, I'd love to find a lyric sheet, so I can sing along). It's haunting, but funky, with crazy danceable rhythms and badass electric guitars. I'm also very taken by the call-and-reponse style vocals--it sounds like virtually everone in the band sings at one point or another. Think Sly and the Family Stone without that chick who can only scream. All I can say is, when we visited Tunisia a few years back, I was desperately hoping to encounter music like this (though we were in actuality confronted by sublimely terrible Eurodisco music at every point).

Oh, and I also found this completely righteous organic coffee blend....

Hypnotic, fabulous sounds from this Taureg group. I admit to having a huge sweet spot for their guitar work, and have played the cd obsessively since purchasing it. The blend of guitar and North African-like sound is steady, but never boring. The Radio Tisdas Sessions cd is probably my most successful gamble on an unknown artist. Where do I find more?

Fans of Ali Farka Toure, check this out...!!.......2003-01-09

Slow, hypnotic West African music, very much in keeping with the griot-pop crossovers of Ali Farka Toure and Toumane Diabate. These guys have a colorful back story: apparently the bandmembers are all originally part of the Tuareg guerilla movement of their native Mali. They met in a military training camp, and somehow made the transition into music, winning acclaim with critics in Europe and, presumably, getting some good press for their political cause as well. I'm not so enamoured of the shoot-'em-up aspect of their history, but their record is alright. As with much of the music in this style, I found this disc to be a bit on the monotonous side -- it's very pretty, but not very dynamic or varied. Still, if you're a fan of Ali Farka Toure, then you should enjoy this album quite a bit -- it doesn't cut any new roads, but it's got a modern sound and is very mellow and nice to chill out to.

Desert Sands: Beautiful Notes on the Wind.......2003-01-08

This CD is a mix of modern and traditional music created by a nomadic tribe from the Sub-Sahara desert. The tribe officially lives in the country of Mali but at the turn of the century the French occupied their land. The fierce independent nature of the people is expressed through their music. The liner notes are required to understand the theme of the songs: methods to achieve freedom and independence under restrictions and occupation. This group was not popular under the French occupation at the turn of the century nor while Mali became a country; they did not accept the "status quo", of other people placing artificial borders on their lifestyle. The music reflects their free spirit: it is ambient, uninhibited, natural,
and does not possess the over-powering percussion often associated with nomadic Arabic people. There are male vocals with a great guitar rhythm and melody ... sometimes there is a female chorus that responds to the male vocals. This is traditional music called "Tishoumaren" or "Ishumar" for short that is in the "new style" accompanied by guitar instead of the traditional lute ... The group was influenced by modern guitarists & pop musicians such as Bob Marley, John Lennon, & Bob Dylan (the liner notes inform us). While there is an Arabic sound to the language, the language is called "Kel Tamashek".

There is a plaintif quality to the vocals, reminding one of the struggle for rights and freedom while being overpowered by outside influences. They basically sing about the right to survive and exist ... During rebellious times, the music was banned in Mali and Algeria in the 1980s - even selling it on the black market resulted in beatings or worse by the authorities. In every sense this is a historical recording of the struggles for freedom and the ability to stay alive of a nomadic people, who are threatened essentially by modern politics and civilization: this is what the vocalists are singing about. The tribe has been marginalized by the ability of outsiders to swallow up their land and territory ... We can thank a French musicican and British recording studio mix master for going to Kidal, mali and recording sessions at Radio Tisdas for our listening pleasure. This is a valuable recording on many levels: spiritual, political, and mostly human level. It is music that represents a dream for independence that may always be just out of reach --- these musicians and many tribesmen went to Libya with the hope of gaining help in their cause, when in essence they themselves were used as foot soldiers (per the liner notes). One of the best albums 2002.......2003-01-02

I didn't know what to expect when I picked this CD up. It is one of the most different and wonderful recordings I've ever heard. It sounds like wandering the Sahara by camel should sound like.

Comprehensiveness isn't always a virtue, as this three-CD set proves. It gathers together everything David Bowie recorded for the BBC between the years referenced in its title, plus a third disc taken from a June 2000 London concert for the famed British radio broadcasting company. Head first to disc two, which focuses on Bowie's in-studio recreations of material from Hunky Dory and Ziggy Stardust, and marvel at the glam-rockabilly heat generated by Bowie's Spiders from Mars band. By comparison, the other two discs are a disappointment. The first reveals a musical chameleon uncomfortably changing his spots, from music-hall entertainer to free-festival folkie to sub-Dylan sage. The third and final disc betrays a different problem. By 2000, Bowie had calcified into a very slick entertainer. His performances here, particularly of later material such as "I'm Afraid of Americans" and "This Is Not America," are technically fine but a little bloodless--disappointingly human instead of wonderfully alien. --Keith Moerer

More essential than you might think...........2005-11-05

`Beeb' is a British affectation for the BBC, the state-run media which plans (or planned) all television and radio for Great Britain. Bowie was around when the BBC was implementing its 4-station radio broadcasting, and he became one of the first guests in early 1968. BBC rules were strange and archaic by American standards, insisting that pre-recorded music represent only a fraction of airtime, the point being that this would provide employment for professional musicians. So it was that David Bowie appeared with a crew of musicians to perform his songs live a number of times over a four-year period.
I'm a very big fan of Bowie's early work (reference my review of Images 1966-1967 if you're interested), but the earliest sessions on this collection are the least fulfilling. Disk one holds interest to Bowie-philes for historic reasons, but it is disk two that presents the artist in full flight. Working with Mick Ronson, his Ziggy Stardust-era songs shine brilliantly here, in some cases rivaling the album versions. "Hang On to Yourself," "Suffragette City," and "Ziggy Stardust" all rock with authority and grace. "Queen Bitch" has more energy than the version on Hunky Dory, while the songwriting brilliance of songs like "Changes" and "Oh You Pretty Things" come through loud and clear. Most telling are the two Velvet Underground songs performed here. Both "White Light/White Heat" and "Waiting For My Man" are definitive, surpassing all Bowie versions that were previously available and perhaps even surpassing Lou Reed's original versions.
For those of you who are lucky enough to find it, a limited edition of this package comes with an extra disk of Bowie performing live at the BBC radio theatre in June of 2000. Search it out! The extra disk is extraordinary, featuring some of the best live Bowie ever recorded. The band is phenomenal, playing each song to perfection without sacrificing any energy. This version of "Stay" blew me away, forcing me to recognize the sheer funky power of this band. Just as mind-boggling are the versions of "Fame" (a new, `improved' version!), "Absolute Beginners" and "Man Who Sold the World". Every track on this extra disk is exceptional, making it an absolute must for even casual fans of David Bowie. A- Tom Ryan

The best of early bowie in one inspiring collections.......2004-11-23

David Bowie is indisputibally on of the most talented artists in music ever. His songwriting is always at a peak, and was always excellent in his early days, and that is proved on this fantastic collection from the BBC. All live, but you wouldn't know it because it's sounds as clear as his studio recordings. And how about those lyrics? Bowie is so inventive, and he's never gotten the due he's deserved. Look at the amount of work he's accomplished, and look how good he can still be; even better than most. He's amazing. One listen to this collection and you'll realize he's amazing too, i hope. If you're still in doubt listen to all of ziggy stardust, but trust me you'll love it.

CHANGESBEEBOWIE.......2004-09-09

CD2 - The first CD could be a symphony of (flatus) and I'd still give this 5 stars for the nearly immaculate performances on the second disk. In particular, "Hang Onto Yourself" (track 3), "White Light/White Heat," and "Suffregette City" (featuring Mick Ronson making this totally hot kissing noise with his guitar)crackle with energy. It is truly a thrill to hear these old favorites in such a new (as such) and exciting light. Bowie and Co. burn down the BBC studios. Repeatedly. Any rock fan (but especially an old Bowie fan, of course) is likely to meltdown in ecstacy upon hearing this.

CD1 - Many hardcore fans will surely (sweet milk) over CD1 as well although I'm not personally crazy about all of it. Some of David's early Brittish folk period is represented which can be a bit hippy-dippy at times. The first 4 tracks, recorded in May of '68, fit that description although they do feature brilliant in-studio orchestral accompaniment.

Much of CD1 does in fact rock. "Let Me Sleep Beside You" and "Janine" are very good, easy-going rockers recorded with Junior's Eyes who had a short-lived collaboration with Bowie and the session was never broadcast. Bowie delivers a stunning solo performance of Jacques Brel's "Port of Amsterdam" (vocal and guitar). The same session shows off Mick Ronson just a few days after hooking up with Bowie for the first time. They perform an intriguing, half-written version of "Width of a Circle." Ronson really cuts loose on "Unwashed and Somewhat Slightly Dazed" and "Cygnet Committee" is positively intense. Some studio hum can be heard on the session, an atmospheric reminder of the electric nature of these proceedings (that may or may not appeal to the listener). "Memory of a Free Festival" had sadly been edited for time and remains so.

Recorded in June of '71, the last session on CD1 features all of the future Spiders From Mars as well as some friends on vocals and guitarist Mark Carr-Pritchard who played for a phantom Bowie project called Arnold Corns. Early embryonic versions of "Moonage Daydream" and "Hang Onto Yourself" were recorded and released under that name. The group stomps through "Bombers," a rare HUNKY DORY-era cut that sounds better (and less cheesy) than the studio version which I have as a bonus cut from the RYCODISK release of HUNKY DORY. "Looking For A Friend" is a country-ish, Stones-y rocker and they also turn in a rousing cover of Chuck Berry's "Almost Grown." And Bowie performs "Kooks" solo on vocal and guitar which he had just written for newborn son Zowie.

Note: Those concerned about excessive voice-overs from BBC radio hosts (like the ones that marred the Jimmy Hendrix BBC release) can relax. There's very little talking over the songs and quite a bit of interesting Bowie banter on CD1. CD2 has nothing but back-to-back songs. Tracks begin with actual songs, not the preceeding dialogue.

Bonus Disk (June 27, 2002 live at BBC Radio Theatre) - ****1/2 Excellent line-up (Earl Slick, Mike Garson), great choice of songs, Bowie in top form. Still, something's missing. A little too slick and professional, maybe? But this is great stuff. "Seven" comes off really well. "Always Crashing In The Same Car" is excellent and much more organic than the album version. The studio wizardry of "Little Wonder" and "Hallo Spaceboy" is expertly reproduced. This album takes on more definition with repeated listens and sounds better over time too. (Many live recordings can initially sound "same-y" from song to song due to same background vocalists, etc.)

We can probably thank Kurt Cobain for reviving Bowie's interest in the post-apocalyptic "Man Who Sold The World," wonderfully played here. "Fame" is vamped-up with a slightly altered rhythm, still funky as ever. "Stay" rocks out. And on the final cut, "Let's Dance" is reimagined as a Carribean breeze before, suddenly, the beat kicks in and the audience "trembles like a flower."

This entire package is most worthy. Highly recommended!

A sprawling triple CD effort.......2004-05-16

I rarely listen to this although having said that I have been listening to it a lot more recently. The fact is is that this is a hard thing to recommend. You might not have some of the songs that are on here and for that you might want to top up. I bought it as an overview of Bowie's earlyish career ( I'm not going anywhere near The Laughing Gnome ). Which in hindsight was probably a bit of a mistake but I wouldn't buy this album if it didn't have the extra CD - call me banal if you will but that's what happens when you have collector tendancies in you!

Bowie's early stuff ( pre-Ziggy ) sounds anodyne and twee. The conversations you hear on the CD make Bowie seem genuinely nervous but pleasantly friendly. Of course he might not do one song " because to do it would be possibly over everyone's budget." You could take that as nerves if you will but this is the BBC we're talking about. Their budgets at the time were not astronomical.

I've said this before that when you see " Live At The BBC " it doesn't really mean it's really *live* if you've ever heard BBC radio presenters like John " that was quite tasty " Peel or any others you'll know that they say " and we have [musician's name] here live in the studio." It's in a studio and it will never give you a live feel for the songs. It's just BBC engineers working on Bowie's songs and in return you could I suppose think of them as session outtakes from his album. But one thing should be made clear - if you haven't got Bowie's version of Jacques Brel's Amsterdam, this is where you can get it. It's passion almost matches Le Grand Jacques in it's intensity

As the second CD moves and the classics come in you begin to think " this is more like it " and Bowie seems more at ease with everything. Notice his covers of White Light/White Heat ( " make me sound like Lou Reed ")

Now the third CD becomes even more sprawling since it tries to fill in all the places that the first two CDs left out. And it's not always a winner. Little Wonder and I'm Afraid of Americans are terrible songs but actually sound better than what they sounded like on their original album. Still doesn't make it good but at least you can probably tolerate it this time. But overall it didn't capture the gig very well since I saw this on TV when I was 15 and I thought the gig was fantastic. Bowie really had them going ( but then that was to be expected right? ), the CD just doesn't capture the songs well and though I like nearly all of the songs, it lacks the cohesion that the show actually had. Still, for the money I paid for this it's not too bad. But then, there's always a nagging feeling that it could be improved but whatever about that, the sheer amount of material you have here you can be somewhat happy if you want to buy this.....of course that is if you are a diehard fan. If you're not - try figuring out which compilation you want to get of Bowie. There's a lot of them around!

CD 2 still the best, but CD3 doesn't disappoint/Bowie Rocks!.......2003-02-11

I did track down this version that has the fine recently recorded third CD, HOWEVER, I would have been happy to have just heard the original two CD collection. On Disc 3, I was impressed with some of the old songs that were chosen such as "Man Who Sold The World" and some classics I have never heard done live like "Ashes To Ashes" and "Stay." The biggest and best surprise is the closer: "Let's Dance." Sweet!

This is certainly an interesting collection of songs! I can't say I love DISC 1 in general, but there are some nice surprises. "Kooks" is a lovely little song! The band playing with Bowie is quite good in "The Width Of A Circle" and "Unwashed And Somewhat Slightly Dazed." I heavily prefer Disc 2 because I have loved the "Ziggy Stardust" material for many years. The familiar songs sound different but as enjoyable as the released versions. Bowie was great at reworking good songs into even better songs, which is quite apparent on "I'm Waiting For The Man" and "White Light/White Heat." I can't say enough positive things about Disc 2 other than "Freak out, in a Moonage Daydream! Oh yeah!"

When a dozen of these songs were released on the first (1987) issue of Heyday, Fairport's original producer, Joe Boyd, revealed that almost 20 years earlier he'd vetoed numbers like Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne," Johnny Cash's "I Still Miss Someone," and the Everly Brothers' "Gone, Gone, Gone" from consideration for the LPs Unhalfbricking and Liege And Lief on the grounds that "Americans did these sorts of songs in their sleep better than any English band could hope to." Any view from 30-odd years later is likely to be obscured by rosy clouds of nostalgia, but Boyd's opinion seems vindicated, especially now that the album has been extended with tracks from the British tradition--such as "Nottamun Town," "Reynardine," and "Tam Lin"--that demonstrate what Fairport really did well. Fresh Air from Long Ago. Very Nice Listening.......2005-06-23

`Heydey' by the original Fairport Convention (thus the title) is a CD of recordings done by the group on the BBC in 1968 and 1969, about the time the group released their attention-grabbing album `Unhalfbricking'.

My first impression on hearing the album is that even with the great original members, especially Sandy Denny and Richard Thompson, this is a very lightweight album. Of the two heaviest numbers, one `Percy's Song' is available on `Unhalfbricking' and Leonard Cohen's `Suzanne' has almost become a cliché, as it has been recorded so many times since Judy Collins brought it to light on one of her albums around 1967. Most of the other numbers are pretty light, some recalling the style of `The Fifth Dimension'.

But then I listened to it a bit more. My opinion on `Percy's Song' and `Suzanne' does not change, but my take on the rest of the album mellows to the point where I really like this artifact from my beloved / hated 1960s. Instead of `The Fifth Dimension', I start to get wiffs of `The Byrds' and Richard and Mimi Farina.

As I happen to be listening to a CD of Fairport Convention which comes 30 years later, with but one original band member (Simon Nicol) in place, I get no sense that I am listening to `Fairport Convention' until they do their old chestnut `Matty Groves' for the 3000th time.

Recommended, if you can get it at a good discount!

No American band can do these songs equal justice.......2003-03-13

The Amazon reviewer neglected to mention what else producer Joe Boyd said in his liner notes: "And of course, now I am forced to admit it is hard to find an American band who can do these songs equal justice."

Indeed. Anything Sandy Denny and Richard Thompson did during their brief association is worth hearing, particularly their work together in Fairport--they really did have a kind of Billie Holiday/Lester Young sympatico thing going. Fairport was famous in it's early days for it's eclectic taste in covers, and this CD was released partly to show that off. Lots of highligts, among them the slightly bizarre acid-rock version of Joni Mitchell's I Don't Know Where I Stand; Denny singing Leonard Cohen, although she only gets to sing half of each song, sharing the lead vocal with Ian Matthews-- her contribution to Bird on a Wire is especially great, she really has a feel for Cohen's sensibility; Denny's gorgeous a cappella intro to Percy's Song; the beautiful harmony singing of Matthews and Denny on Cash's I Still Miss Someone, the Everly Brothers Gone Gone Gone, and ex-Byrd Gene Clark's Tried So Hard, to name but a few. Reno, Nevada shoulda been a Top of the Pops hit.

This "Extended" version includes material from the entire span of the Denny-Thompson edition of Fairport, including--in addition to songs that never appeared on an official Fariport release--live versions of two songs from What We Did on Our Holidays, four songs from Unhalfbricking and two songs from Liege and Lief. The latter were a bit of a disappointment to me--Raynardine is good, although very much like the version on Leige and Lief, but on Tam Lin they sound a little stiff compared to the record version, that is up until the very end, when they start jamming (Ashley Hutchings warns in the liner notes that these were "very early outings for these traditional songs"). Still, well worth having if you like this sort of thing.

For fans of Fairport's singer-songwriter period.......2002-11-10

This is a pleasant but non-essential souvenir of Fairport Convention's early days, when a large part of their repertoire was covers of American singer-songwriter material. The recordings were made for BBC radio broadcasts. Ten of the twelve songs are cover tunes, of which two (Dylan's "Percy's Song" and Joni Mitchell's "I Don't Know Where I Stand") have previously appeared on Fairport albums. There's some Leonard Cohen, some Everly Brothers, a little Byrds... A highlight is "Some Sweet Day". Of all the Fairport albums, this one has the least connection to the band's later folk-rock sound.

I have just traded my original copy of Heyday in now that I have this one.

The value of this album is the live versions of the songs that the band recorded on their studio albums and which have not been generally available.

Fairport Convention in performance have often been an entirely different animal to the studio band and I can testify to that having seen them in such disparate venues as Fusion, Sunderland and Newcastle Poly.

Tracks 1 through 12 sound good but the style does not suit the band in retrospect. Importing new and upcoming songwriters' songs certainly brought a breath of fresh air to the British scene and served an important purpose in reawakening our own roots but despite the beauty of the singer's voices, the approach is still borrowed and although sounding authentic does not really gel. Please don't mistake me, I love those songs and the performance but I prefer the later material.

My greatest joy in owning this CD comes from having a live version of Tam Lin which I have always preferred to the crowd favourite of Matty Groves. It is a little different to the studio version but is awesome. Other standout tracks are Autopsy and Reynardine. Later period Fairport with probably their most powerful lineup is a joy to listen to even when they are playing their Top of the Pops Si Tu Dois Partir. The playing is a delight, the singing amazing and the tightness of the band and their empathy with the other band members is clearly evident.

BBC Redundancy.......2006-02-04

This cd comprises 16 tracks taken from BBC radio shows such as The Peel Session, Richard Skinner Session and The Kid Jensen Session and are presented in the order in which they originally were aired.

While this is a great collection, 8 of these tracks were already previously released and still easily obtained from the Volume 2 Radio Days cd. So if you already own that cd (which I do), then you are really only getting 8 songs instead of 16. This is unfortunate as both cd's have tracks exclusive to themselves. So if you are a completist, then you really want to have both cd's as Radio Days has 4 songs that BBC Radio Sessions doesn't have.

The unfortunate side of all this is that there are still a handful of tracks that have yet to see the light of day on an officially released cd such as Moles, Marilyn Dreams, Scare Some Life Into Me and Film Music which can be found on the unofficial and crappy sounding Nightmares In Wax cd if you can find a copy.

While I appreciate B-Movie releasing this cd and getting 8 tracks I wouldn't otherwise have, I feel that there might have been a better to introduce the rest of the BBC sessions and including some otherwise forgotten tracks making this more of a worthwhile purchase instead of a redundant one.

I've only listened to Jason Mraz because that's the only reason I bought it. He is absolutely amazing. I haven't heard him do "Unravel," A Bjork cover, or "Plain Jane," but they are both excellent. "The Boy's Gone" is also a great track.

Often derided as "shoe-gazer" aesthetes, Stereolab's dirty little secret is that they're a lively, inventive, and surprisingly aggressive live band, and have been since their 1991 inception. These 32 tracks were recorded live in the studio for BBC radio hosts John Peel and Mark Radcliffe. The early songs have a garage-rock vibe; listeners are witness to the "groop" working through their influences, which they've never really tried to hide. "Anemie," for instance, is a Farfisa-fired homage to the Faust tune "Rainy Day." As the '90s progressed, the band's recording became more genteel and intricately arranged songs. But what some songs may lose in subtlety they make up for in force. Of particular note is 1996's 10-minute "Metronomic Underground," a jagged space-age/Afro-rock workout. Fans shouldn't hesitate to pick up ABC Music, while newcomers might consider it as a playful and raw retrospective of this innovative pop band's career. --Mike McGonigal

Fabulous.......2007-05-21

This collection of live sessions from BBC Radio 1 is a fantastic retrospective of Stereolab's work from 1991-2001. They sound great throughout this two disc collection. Particular highlights for me include the extended jam on Metronomic Underground and, one of my favorite tracks from any group, Cybele's Reverie. If you are new to Stereolab, this is a great collection to give you a remedial course in their work throughout the 90's, while long time fans will surely enjoy these live recordings of old favorites. Clocking in with over two hours music, this is a good deal as well.

It has taken me a long time to get round to really connecting with this double CD workproduct from the famed Franco-British synthetic pop-music agitprop alternorock band. Ever since catching them live about ten years ago, I've considered them one of my favorite bands. I mean the live sound was so good that although I had long outgrown my penchant for ingesting mind altering substances, I caught myself longing for something really good to better enjoy the sound with AND even though I left that concert thinking it was one of the dem finest concert experiences I'd ever had--and I've attended dozens and dozens, of 'em--I still to this day wish I'd been there on a different plane of consciousness. It was just an indescribably good time. Having said that, I subsequently acquired three or four of their efforts, King Tomato Ketchup, Dot and Loops, Space Age Bachelor Music and perhaps another but they all got a couple of plays and then gathered dust. I got this double CD more from wishful thinking than from any expectations of taking aural pleasure from it. My first couple of play throughs more or less confirmed my worst expectations: just another another semi-repetitious Stereolab album with a few good bits, I thought. Then, about a year later for no reason or any reason at all I gave it another chance, by chance and you know what? It came alive for me. I have to say that this comp. of synthetic mongopopular radio frequency stage happiness is really quite good, and complete and definitely worth a purchase. If you've never heard Stereolab listen to the sample tracks above, I'm sure that they will give one a good idea of what they sound like. The music is kind of dreamy kind of funky kind of hokey kind of thoughtful kind of happy and often kind of demmed good. It is refreshing to find a band that one likes which does not sound like a whole bunch of other bands. In fact, if I were to make a comparison of Stereolab to another band I would have to compare it to a band that I haven't heard yet. This album is definitely a long term keeper.

Great Studio Sounding Live Cd .......2005-11-13

If you're a Stereolab fan then this is an outstanding double disc of "live" John Peel session cuts featuring for the most part cuts from Switched On, Peng, Emperor Tomato Ketchup and Mars Audio Quintet. Probably the most interesting aspect of the cd is that it sounds more like an alternative studion cuts compilation than it does a live cd and in fact unless you know beforehand that the cuts are indeed live you'd really have no idea. Definitely worth picking up even if you own most of the original releases.

This is now my favorite Stereolab album! Fans of Stereolab will love this! For folks new to Stereolab, this is a great place to start! This is high-energy pop with strong, steady, and hypnotic rhythms and nice harmonies. Certainly an "essential" Stereolab CD.

Personally,I liked their 'Bootlegged In Japan' CD better(see my review).But don't get me wrong,if you're a long-time Napalm fan,then you should get a lot from this sixteen track BBC compilation.If anything,it features a great song selection/mix of material from the band's entire back catalog.Just good grindcore for thrashers to thoroughly enjoy. Few of the cuts that I took a liking to were "The Kill / Prison Without Walls", "Moral Crusade / Worlds Apart" and "From Enslavement To Obliteration". A decent pick.

i find this to be napalm death's most consistent release, as the tracklist pulls songs from many different napalm albums, giving a sampler of napalm death's different stages - while managing to be superior to the orginals in both performance and production. the sounds here are not just grindcore, but a melding of pop group/lee perry styled dub play, peter brotzmann's free jazz fury, and big black's nihilism.

Incongruous but essential collection of BBC recordings.......2004-02-15

Already released once as "The Peel Sessions", four more tracks recorded in 1996 for the BBC Friday Rock Show have been tacked on as an added enticement. The primary raison d'etre of this package seems to be to give American fans a chance to pick up this material; the "Peel" disc was in fact an import, and even at it's moderate price was scarce in the US. That being said, there's little incentive for owners of that CD to pick up this new release. The artwork is as atrocious as that on it's foreign counterpart, and the vocals on the songs from '96 are mixed way back in the cheap seats. But fans discovering these versions for the first time will find a wealth of rage and hostility greeting them in the ultra-brief, ultra-violent forays into the band's early material.

For those unfamiliar with the John Peel program, guests on the show are given four hours of studio time to lay down takes of however many songs they can manage in that time period. These restrictions don't allow the bands the luxury of editing or post-producing the output, so basically it's set the knobs on the control board and let `er rip. What comes out is a jaw dropping maelstrom of malcontent, rendered in brief, concentrated bursts (the echo following Napalm's performance of "You Suffer Part 2" actually lasts about four times longer than the song itself). Aside from the last four tracks, everything else is from those first three pre-death metal grindcore albums, resembling a musical train wreck witnessed from an uncomfortably close position. Napalm Death have now moved on to greener pastures while preserving their integrity, but "The Complete Radio One Session" reminds us of the energetic fury which once came ripping from a nation's loudspeakers, and on public radio, no less. Only in Jolly Old England.

if you've never heard Napalm Death and must own one Napalm Death cd then this is it! it covers everything from the chaotic noise blasts of the past (you suffer) to the more death metal sound of present (greed killing). a definitive collection. also pick up Carcass-symphonies of sickness these two discs rarely leave my cd player.

Pure adrenalin throughout the whole listening of this album. The band initially advocated by John Peel in 1987 gets a complete album to itself of all the songs they recorded at BBC studios throughout the years. Despite all the changes in personnel the band have managed to retain their awesome credibiltity by recording some amazing tunes, my favourites including 'Scum' and 'My Own Worse Enemy'. This is a classic album of pure thrash metal that should be in every Napalm fan's collection.

This spoken-word CD by Mumia Abu-Jamal is a collection of speeches and essays by the death-row inmate and features supporters as diverse as Alice Walker, Cornel West, Martin Sheen, and Dorothy Allison. Before he was jailed for murder in 1981, Abu-Jamal was president of the Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists and a civil rights activist. His eloquence as a writer shows in his numerous essays, which touch on everything from poverty to racism to rap, but unfortunately the author is not a natural speaker. His voice lacks the fire and brimstone of a Jesse Jackson or a Martin Luther King Jr.; instead, Abu-Jamal delivers his politicized speeches with the even-toned, calming tenor of a newscaster (not surprising when you consider that he also worked for WUHY-FM before his arrest. And although the topics might seem almost commonplace to us in this age of feminism and affirmative action, it's still a message worth hearing. --Tricia Romano

Let me be clear initially: I have no idea whether this man is innocent or guilty of the crime. Further: I think he deserves a scrupulously fair trial and let the chips then fall. On the subject at hand, however, it is clear that this is a very intelligent and articulate man in a very bad situation. I enjoyed the no holds barred nature of the segments.

What I did not enjoy was the "rah-rah" segments by other people. Eliminate these and put in more by Jamal and this is a very desirable CD set. Fortunately, my CD player has a very efficient skip button.

Eloquent...Informative...Compelling..........2002-11-01

The one and only criticism I have about this work is that Mumia's oration invariably sounds vapid, but not so much that it detracts from the overall value of this album. I highly recommend it to anyone who seeks to hear the actual voice of the "Voice of the Voiceless". The substance of all the essays is ever absorbing and compelling. I stand in reverence to the man who has been able to maintain such a resilient spirit in the face of ongoing horrendous treatment and wrongful imprisonment. I also highly recommend reading Mumia's "Death Blossoms", a collection of vignettes he has written while in prison, and a work that is perhaps the best peek one can steal into the soul of the internationally known political prisoner.

The range of issues Mumia addresses in "All Things Censored" is impressive and informative and a testament to his penchant for analyzing crucial issues from a fresh and thoughtful angle. The conclusion of each piece recited by Mumia is cleverly punctuated by the sound of the slamming of a cell door behind the hook, "From Death Row, this is Mumia Abu Jamal".

Some of the best minds in America have joined Mumia on this CD to speak on his behalf and in favor of justice and against the Prison Industrial Machine. Ramona Africa speaks with characteristic fire and conviction, in a speech that was dubbed on a track of the Seeds of Wisdom album (get this CD!) The spirit of slain freedom fighter Judi Bari lives on in her cameo on the album. Anyone who has taken an honest, serious and open-minded look at Mumia's case will do well to get this as a collector's item. The Voice for the Voiceless.......2001-01-08

Mumia Abu-Jamal has come to national spotlight under charges of improper judicial prodeedings and the national tilt toward a moratorium of the death penalty. While I am still unsure about the guilt of Mumia, this CD is vital to those who profess his innocence, those who are anti-death penalty -- and even those who are pro-death penalty. Mumia speaks with a voice of reason on issues ranging from prison brutality to the lack of objectivity in the mass media.

Most of these essays were to be aired on National Public Radio, but shortly before the first air date they were cancelled because NPR's sponsors did not agree with what Mumia was saying. That is a common theme throughout this CD: the people in charge are trying to keep Mumia silent by punishing him for writing his books ("Live on Death Row," "Death Blossoms," and "All Things Censored") and recording these sessions.

Buy this CD and learn what the higher-ups don't want you to know about. This CD is harmful to their very existance and if only for that reason you should listen to it.

of course, no one who listens to this collection thinks mr. abu-jamal is anything other then a victim of a racist society,unfarly sitting on death row.the list of supporters is most impressive,and mr. abu -jamal himself is rather understated in his tone.The salient point is not the gross differential between rich and poor in the court system[is this news to anyone that people of color are routinely treated poorly ?],nor the blatant racist policies of the death penalty. The point is that mr. abu-jamal shot a man in philadephia,and has no defense other then some well meaning folks taken in by a smooth talking con.Speaking with others who have been inside,we all to a man agree that he is playing folks,and doing a damn good job of it.Shoud he die, of course not. People should look at the facts,not the hype,read the court report,read the trial transcripts.No,they wont...
